• Objectives

– Study the real options of applying the ICT in the Spanish

University (students and teachers in the student’s opinion)

– Identify the better applications of the ICT according to the

students

– Check the possibilities of ICT in the improvement of the

learning-teaching process in the student perception

– Analyze the differences among Spanish Geography students

– Study the relation between “Exciting Geography” and ICT

• Methodology

– Survey of ten questions about ICT, learning-teaching process

and Geography

– Questions combining open and closed answers and

grammatical scales, normally with five possible options

– Send the questionnaires to a representative number of

Universities with the Geography degree, asking for a sample of

30 questionnaires in each

– Study the data collected and present in the Nicosia meeting

some initial results

Notes

- The starting point is good. 97% with

PC at home, 60% with internet

access, 70% more than 3 hours a

week connected and just 14%

without motivation

- Nevertheless, 55% state that they “scarcely” use

ICT to learn Geography (+ 8,5% don’t use it).

Possibly, the Geography teachers in Spain don’t

ask our students for using internet because of the

massive use of “cut and paste methodology”.

First recommendation, promote the use of ICT

from the teacher desk

- The participation of ICT in the teaching process is

very limited too. 72% define their use as

“scarcely” (+ 11% don’t use it). There are no

differences among the ten universities, from the

bigger to the smaller one, and from north to

south, east or west, the low percentages are

always the same.

- The limited use of ICT affects the

perception of Geography students about

their Institution because 99% of them

agreed that the use of ICT was necessary

- However, students believe that the success of

the ICT in Higher Education depends on

teachers (66,4%) more than the application of

the ICT in the classroom.

Second recommendation, introducing the ICT in

our lectures is not enough, we have to improve

the didactic of Geography itself.

- Anyway, the main obstacle according to

the students point of view was easy to

overcome. We just need more PCs,

internet connections and licenses of

software in our universities.

- So if we ask ourselves if there is a

relationship between ICT and

“exciting Geography”, the answer is

YES

- Because only 2% of the students told us

that the introduction of ICT won’t make

the Geography more attractive. 40% said

“surely” and 26% “certainly”

- Because ICT will make more interesting

the explanations of difficult subjects

(52%) and will help the students to

assimilate their contents (35%).

- Because of the excitment of students

when we talked about ICT applications.

We have done 283 questionnaires but in

this question we had 759 answers.
