Captain’s Chronicle

“Addendum”- September 2011

I always look forward to our games out at St Francis Bay

and this month was no exception,…….except that the

Bokke were playing the Aussies in the quarterfinals of the

2011 RWC. A brief discussion a couple of days before

with Ian, our VC, initiated the organization of having the

club open, and TV's on, at 06:45 – ready for us to arrive and enjoy the singing

of the anthems and to settle into a tense game of rugby. The club served

breakfast at half time and I was convinced we were going to hammer the

Aussies – this was not to be and I wish to discuss it no more! Two pictures –

I had the pleasure of playing with the St Francis Bay GC Captain Charlie Byl and

two past National Chairmen, Neale Kunhardt and Southern Cape visitor Nigel

Tipping. Well, it was obvious that their Nomads wisdom and experience helped

in “Klapping” Charlie and I – we only squeaked the units in our wager. It was

great having Nigel up form Plettenburg Bay for the game – Nigel you are

always welcome!

It was a pleasure to welcome Pat Phillips on his “return” from Border. Pat – we

look forward to seeing you back in the Aubergine colours of the Eastern Cape.

It was also great to see a number of

guests introduced at this monthly

game. This was spurred on by the

introduction of the “Bring a Guest”

draw. All nomads who introduce a

guest at a Nomads game are entered

into a draw for a great prize

sponsored by Willie Els' wife, Marika.

So, I urge all of you to look around

you, to your circle of non-Nomad golfing buddies and see if any of them would

make good Nomads – invite them along to the next game and you are in for a

chance to win this great prize (Whisky, biltong, nuts, an massage).

It was also a week in which

we sadly witnessed the

passing of Simon Bosch.

It was only last month that

I mentioned in my report

that, “The following day

John [Lees] was picked up

in the, now becoming,

traditional “Vintage

Shuttle”; a Ford Model T

(your Nomad here – Simon

Bosch).” This, Simon had

done for the last two years,

and was highly

appreciated by these

National Chairman. “The

memory of a good person

is a blessing.” Proverbs 10:7 - Simon we will miss you.

I hope many of you will join us when we play at Shark River GC on Sunday, 6

November 2011 as a special game. It will be a fun day and we will have a Braai

afterwards. Check with your JVC, Ken, for more info. Please remember to

diarize our AGM which is scheduled for the very next day, Monday, 7 November

at 18:00 at the PEGC.

Ian, Ken, Neale and I will be traveling to Lowveld's 15th Anniversary

celebrations as well as the 112th

National Management Meeting in mid

November.

Our next game is at Uitenhage Golf

Club on 20 November 2011 – the last

game to qualify for Gold Cup. Let's see

if we can have a field of 100 players!

Ian’s Wrap - September 2011

Fellow Nomads,

It was with a very sad heart that I set off for

St. Francis Bay Golf Club knowing that Simon

Bosch would not be there with us. Much has

been said about his premature departure and all I can add is it

was an honour knowing him and being his friend.

We will miss you!

After our loss to Bryce Lawrence on Sunday, we set off to

play one of the Eastern Cape’s hidden gems.

Let me tell you all, Africa is not for sissies!!!! Temperatures

close to 40deg made for an interesting day!

Yes, as with all courses this time of the year, the green had

been hollow tined and left to grow a bit making them slow -

but the fairways, also considering the recent floods were great!

Well done to the committee & grounds staff for getting this

right.

As time was running out and our very busy schedule, we asked

for permission to play our Gary Player knockout on the day and

what a game it was...

I personally felt that Marcelle Roux and I, shooting a combined

pair score of 70 odd would suffice in beating anyone, well

sports lovers, try losing to 73! Bruce Watson and Brian

Desfountain shot lights out - trying to get 20 shots back

proved too much. It did lift our game somewhat letting us win

best playing fourball - good

luck for the rest of the

knockout guys!

Our AGM is a few weeks away

and I urge you all to attend.

The time to stand up and be

counted is now, not over a

beer after a game. Lets get

the ‘corner table’ guys to come

to the AGM and let their

voices be heard!

There are 2 nominations for your Junior Vice Captain 2012 and

they need your support and votes.

I look forward to seeing you

all at Uitenhage for our next

monthly game...

Ian Gooden

Ken’s Korner - September 2011

Who would have thought that such a magnificent day in

such a wonderful setting could be spoilt by a one-eyed, selfcentred,

Australian-biased Rugby World Cup referee? The

whole fairy-tale dream of South Africa's defence of their

World Cup title was dashed in an eighty-minute spectacle by one individual

which was nothing short of abysmal! There are a lot of South Africans who

would seriously advise Mr Lawrence against taking any planned holidays to

South Africa for a couple of years. Either way, it's come and gone and good luck

to all that are left.

The hospitality that St

Francis exuded in

welcoming all the early

birds for the rugby was

amazing and quite

surprising to see so

many there at the crack

of dawn. The result,

whilst dampening the

mood, couldn't douse

the spirit and it wasn't

long before the banter

on and off the course

was inviting. Weather-wise, the gods could not have treated us better with a

moderate breeze on an otherwise idyllic day.

Everything that St Francis had to offer was on display and the results certainly

mirrored the conditions. I had the honour of partnering Darryl Harvey against

Andrew Taylor and Neil Webster and after a disastrous first nine disastrous start

we managed to pull back to take the

money! A special vote of thanks is

due to the management and staff of St

Francis for the warmth and

enthusiasm that they present every

facet of their club and course.

Prize-giving is always a welcome

ending to a great day, especially if you

are in the prizes!! May I devote a

small word of thanks to those that

selflessly sponsor the prize-table

every month making our triumphs memorable; without your

support we wouldn't have such a variety on offer – well done

and thanks guys.

The results of the Special Game snap survey are in and the preference indicates

a “home” versus travelling to an “away” venue. Shark River is the venue and the

date has moved slightly to accommodate the RWC final and the SA versus

Australia ODI at St George's on the 23rd. By now you should all have received

the first “teaser” for this game and I urge all that are interested to get your

entries in as soon a possible.

Coming up at the end of November is our Junior Golf Foundation day at Walmer

Country Club where Nomads get the opportunity to mix it with the juniors, the

parents, the pros and the various golfing committees giving a little taste of

Nomads to the JGF community. Communication and invitations will be sent out

a little later this month and I urge you all join in the fun and spirit of this day!!

Until next time,

The Rule Box with Jason Aitken...

Something different this month, for those of us that simply get

too irritated and annoyed with some of golf's bizarre rules!

Here is a list of course rules published by St. Mellon Golf and CC

during World War 2.

Written by B. L. Edsell, the club secretary, they read:

1 - Players are asked to collect the bomb and shrapnel splinters to prevent their

causing damage to the mowing machines.

2- In competition, during gunfire or while bombs are falling, players may take

shelter without penalty for ceasing play.

3 - The positions of known delayed-actions bombs are marked by red flags at a

reasonable by not guaranteed safe distance there from.

4 - Shrapnel and/or bomb splinters on the fairways or in bunkers within a club's

length of a ball may be moved without penalty, and no penalty shall be

incurred if a ball is thereby caused to be moved accidentally.

5 - A ball moved by enemy action may be replaced, or if lost or destroyed, a ball

may be dropped without penalty, not nearer the hole.

6 - A ball lying in a crater may be lifted and dropped not nearer the hole,

preserving the line to the hole, without penalty.

7 - A player whose stroke is affected by the simultaneous explosion of a bomb

may play another ball under penalty of one stroke.

Anybody who would play golf under these circumstances would be a dear

friend of mine!!!

Maybe you will think twice now about

moaning because you cant move that

acorn that landed in the bunker behind

your ball

Happy golfing
