Bac kg ro u n d:
For the past four years, the EMA has been facilitating residential Youth Workshops during the July/
August vacation.
From 2008, the themes have been “People and the Northern Range”, “Island Biodiversity and Sustainable
Development”, “Sustainable Livelihoods – Green Living in the 21st Century” and “Forests for People”.
Each theme allowed campers to develop a comprehensive understanding of the state of the environment
in Trinidad & Tobago, while empowering them to make educated choices in line with sustainability in the
future.
While all four previous workshops were held in Trinidad, this year’s moves to Tobago to provide Sixth
Formers there with the full opportunity to participate. The theme is “Green Economy: Does it include
you?” in keeping with the United Nations’ 2012 World Environment Day theme. This two-pronged theme
invites individuals to investigate the idea and the reality of a green economy which, at its essence, is
low carbon and resource efficient. It then poses the question of how socially inclusive is each country’s
environmental policies; does it include each of us?
Campers will be given the opportunity to examine an eco-resort’s operations in Tobago and interact with
members of environmental NGOs, in order to receive practical, current information on the island’s current
position and future options for sustainable development.
Objectives:
To foster opportunities for Trinidad and Tobago’s youth to develop a greater understanding of the
importance of sustainable development for the long-term stability of the nation’s economy.
To develop and train a cadre of youth that can be utilised in the EMA’s Volunteer and Community
Programmes.
To produce environmental education materials through participatory techniques for use in training
and communication strategies.
To test the viability of participatory and emancipatory education approaches in youth learning.
