2009–10 Honor Roll of Donors

Message from the President

As I look back over the 2009–10 year and reflect on the tremendous

outpouring of support from our donors and friends, I am reminded of the

poignant words of John F. Kennedy: “As we express our gratitude, we

must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but

to live by them.”

We are

standing on

the highest

point in our

history, and it

is because of

your support

that we have

reached

this level of

distinction.

It is with this gratitude in mind that I wish to express Mount Mercy

University’s collective thanks in words, but I am unfailingly aware that

as a campus community we must live them in our daily interactions with

each other. Every day, we see the immediate impact your gifts have on

our students, faculty and staff. But more than that, we see what those

investments represent — a belief in our students, in the foundation of

Mount Mercy University and in our aspirations as a leader in Mercy

higher education. They keep that mission alive and strong for future

generations of students.

Our mission is paved by the generous support of those who put that belief

into action and who showcase in rich and tangible ways the principle

that much can be achieved through the meaningful accomplishments of

many. Nothing is insignificant. We are standing on the highest point in our

history, and it is because of your support that we have reached this level of

distinction.

Some of my proudest moments as President of Mount Mercy University

include recognizing our collective achievements, but they are also the most

humbling. Humbling, because nowhere is your faith in the University

more apparent than in your financial contributions. Please know that your

gifts truly matter, they make a difference in people’s lives and they impact

the future in ways that we may never know.

Thank you, and Godspeed.

Giving Highlights

Generations of Mount Mercy students will

benefit from a new $1.2 million scholarship

fund established by an anonymous donor.

Private support of more than

$1.2 million from the estate of an

anonymous donor created a new

endowed scholarship fund that will

provide significant and multiple

scholarships.

These scholarships were funded by a

Charitable Remainder Unitrust, which

the donor established in 2007. Mount

Mercy received the balance of the

trust this year after the donor passed

away. This donor sought to create a

meaningful legacy that would forever

recognize the history and contributions

of the donor’s family, while helping

generations of worthy undergraduates

who are experiencing financial need.

During Scholarshare, the annual

business appeal that supports

scholarships, volunteer business

supporters of Mount Mercy engage

other business leaders to explain the

economic benefits of investing in the

University.

The 2009-10 campaign, which began

in April 2009 under the leadership of

Scholarshare chairman and Mount

Mercy Trustee C. John Linge, raised

more than $96,000. The 2010-11

campaign kicked off in May 2010.

The Andreas Charitable Lead Trust

continues its support of Andreas House,

Mount Mercy’s newest residence facility.

Mount Mercy’s Board of Trustees

approved a Campus Master Plan that

provides the facilities and physical

environment to meet the educational

needs of the 21 st century.

Construction began in Summer 2010 on

University Center and Plaza & Walk,

the first project in the Unity Campus

Master Plan. The University has

received more than $700,000 in early

gifts to support the first project, which

will cost $8 million to complete.

Mount Mercy provided $8.1 million in

scholarship support to undergraduates

in 2009–10, including $576,000 from

endowed and named scholarships.

A total of 238 endowed scholarships,

which are a continual source of

support for Mount Mercy students,

were awarded. Annual donors

provided 125 named scholarships.

Mount Mercy thanks all who invested

in our worthy students!

The Andreas Charitable Lead Unitrust

continued its support for Andreas

House, the newest of Mount Mercy’s

residence facilities, with a $135,000

donation.

Andreas House opened in 2001 and is

home to 144 juniors and seniors who

share eight-person suites. Each Andreas

House suite features four bedrooms,

two bathrooms, a living room and

kitchenette.

The Solon-Andreas Foundation provided

$4,000 to fund classroom computer

equipment and software upgrades.

Fiscal year 2010 marks the 16 th

consecutive year that Mount Mercy’s

teaching environment has benefited

from this funding, with nearly $60,000

in cumulative gifts designated for

technology. Mount Mercy Trustee

Martin L. Andreas serves as president

of the Foundation and is a charter

member of Mount Mercy’s Founder’s

Society, which recognizes lifetime

giving of $1 million or more.

Mount Mercy University

This year Mount Mercy received more

than $35,000 from the Iowa College

Foundation (ICF), a joint effort by 24

private Iowa colleges and universities to

raise scholarship funds.

Each school provides fundraisers to assist

with the regional campaigns, where area

businesses and corporations are asked to

support ICF. Since joining the coalition

in 1960, Mount Mercy has received

nearly $2 million in ICF funding.

A site assessment of Mount Mercy’s

iconic Grotto was funded by the Art

Club and the Ken and Ortha Harstad

Fund at the Greater Cedar Rapids

Community Foundation.

GreatAmerica Leasing continued its

tradition of generous support of named

scholarships.

In its ninth year of scholarship support,

GreatAmerica provided $10,000 for

annual scholarships, bringing the

company’s overall support of the

scholarship program to $125,000. The

Cedar Rapids-based company also

supports the Mount Mercy Fund and

building projects on campus.

The Ken and Ortha Harstad Fund at

the Greater Cedar Rapids Community

Foundation provided $2,321 to fund

restoration efforts for Mount Mercy’s

historic Grotto.

This gift, along with funds raised by

Mount Mercy’s Art Club, supported

an historic site condition assessment

completed in the summer of 2010.

That assessment is crucial to the

development of a comprehensive site

plan for restoration of the Grotto,

which was built in 1929. During her

lifetime, Ortha Harstad supported

Grotto restoration efforts, and made

plans to continue that support after

her death. The Ken and Ortha Harstad

Fund continues Ortha’s legacy of

support for public art.

Giving Highlights (continued)

Mount Mercy welcomed new members

to the Heritage Club this year.

Fredrick Wagenaar established the

Diane Wagenaar Endowed Nursing

Scholarship, and Dawn and George

Bazarko established the Glenyce Axon

Endowed Fund. With 304 current

and 136 in-memoriam members, the

Heritage Club recognizes individuals

who have included Mount Mercy in

their estate plans or who have made

a significant gift to the institution’s

endowment.

Hunter’s Ridge Golf Course in Marion

was the site for another successful

Mount Mercy Golf Classic.

Mount Mercy business supporters,

alumni and friends enjoyed a

fantastic day of golf and camaraderie

on September 1, 2009, raising more

than $40,000 for Mount Mercy

athletics. For the fifth year, the ESCO

Group, Marion, was the event’s

presenting sponsor.

In addition to the Golf Classic, Mount

Mercy’s athletic teams received gifts

from 166 donors, for a total of $12,934.

Men’s golf, softball, and women’s

basketball — teams that traveled to

tournaments this year — received

the most donations. Private support

supplements the athletic operating

budget and allows the Mustangs to

operate programs with full schedules.

The power of alternative energy

sources — and the creativity needed

to develop those — was the focus of a

program developed by Dr. Will Kirkland

and made possible by three grants.

Kirkland and a small group of biology

students converted waste cooking oil

from the campus cafeteria to biodiesel

fuel, which then powered Mount

Mercy’s diesel maintenance vehicles.

The project was made possible

through a grant of $2,000 from the

Rockwell Collins Green Communities

fund; $1,000 from the Greater Cedar

Rapids Community Foundation

GP Fund for the Environment; and

$2,500 from the Mount Mercy

Student Government Association.

A $25,000 AFIRM grant from the Sisters

of Mercy of the Americas greatly

enhanced the diversity initiatives and

service learning opportunities offered

by the Campus Ministry office.

Through grant-supported educational

activities, guest lecturers and multiple

service experiences, students and staff

were empowered to grow and succeed

in a culturally diverse world.

A $2,000 grant from the McElroy Trust

Student/Faculty Research Program

allowed Dr. Alesia Hruska-Hageman

to pursue her scholarship interests

and provide students with research

opportunities.

Hruska-Hageman’s students benefit

from hands-on lab work and

conducting research methods that

impact the scientific community. This

experience is valuable in helping

students gain invaluable experience

and build impressive resumes for life

after graduation.

Kelly Baier, J.D., presented the seventh

annual Barbara Knapp Endowed

Business Lecture in February.

An attorney with Bradley and Riley,

P.C., who specializes in employment

and labor, civil rights and First

Amendment cases, Baier lectured on

the changing landscape of employment

law. Barbara Knapp, who serves as

vice chair of the Mount Mercy Board

of Trustees and whose family founded

Securities Corporation of Iowa,

established the endowed lecture series

in 2002.

Mount Mercy’s Students In Free

Enterprise (SIFE) program was the

beneficiary of a new endowment

fund established by former SIFE

team members, sponsoring faculty,

corporations and business advisory

board members.

In 2009–10, 27 contributors provided

$10,000, and those funds are being

matched by a federal Title III grant.

This $20,000 endowment, along with

any future contributions, will provide a

firm future for SIFE on Mount Mercy’s

campus.

was one of the new Heritage Club members

inducted at the event.

Since 1993 more than 2,600

donors have contributed

nearly $1 million to purchase

books and materials for the

Busse Library.

Associate Professor of Criminal Justice

Chad Loes was named the 2010–12

Dr. Thomas R. Feld Endowed Chair for

Teaching Excellence, the eighth faculty

member to receive this honor.

Recipients offer faculty workshops that

focus on their special areas of expertise

and inquiry. The Feld chair was

established by the Board of Trustees

in 1999 to recognize President Feld’s

22 years of service to Mount Mercy.

To date, more than $500,000 has been

donated to this endowment.

Students, faculty, staff and community

members filled the Chapel of Mercy

April 13 for a free forum by Holocaust

survivor and author Isaac Levendel.

For more than a decade, Mount

Mercy has hosted a Holocaust lecture

near Yom Hashoah (Holocaust

Remembrance Day). The lectures,

which also are held at other area

colleges and high schools, are

sponsored by the Thaler Holocaust

Memorial Fund.

Donors continued to provide generous

support for the Busse Library, with

more than $12,000 designated for

general library acquisitions and

$1,340 raised through the Library

Bookplate project.

Since 1993, 2,615 donors have

contributed nearly $1 million for

library acquisitions. Plus, the Iowa

College Foundation increases the

impact of every contribution to the

Busse Library: The ICF provides a

match of $1 for every $3 donated to

the library.

Ryan Bosch ’01, from Bosch Financial

Inc., and Randy Johnson, vice president at

F&M Bank, enjoy the opportunity to swing

some clubs for a good cause during the

annual Mount Mercy Golf Classic, which

raised more than $40,000 for Mount Mercy

Athletics.

Family legacy empowers new generation

When unforgettable people make an impact on those around them, it can affect

countless lives. When an entire family impacts those around them, generations of

individuals have the potential to be touched. Such is the legacy of the Ryan family,

whose dedication to Mount Mercy University and the pursuit of learning has

resulted in a rich and remarkable legacy on the Hill.

James and Ellen (O’Neil) Ryan instilled

in their nine children the importance of

education and the value of knowledge.

All four Ryan girls attended Mount

Mercy, and their experiences impacted

their parents. When James and

Ellen passed away, their children knew

exactly how to honor them — through

a Mount Mercy endowed scholarship

created in their memory.

The James and Ellen O’Neil Ryan

Endowed Scholarship was created in

1986, and since has helped more than

two dozen students in their own quest for

knowledge. “They’d be pleased,” says Katie

Ryan Schmidt RN’54 of her parents.

“Dad always said that what you have in

your head they can’t tax or take away.”

The tradition of establishing endowed

scholarships first began with Mary

Veronica Ryan Arnold ’42, eldest

daughter of the Ryans. When her

husband, Orrin, passed away, Mary

Arnold wanted to honor his memory in

a way that would benefit future generations

while also paying homage to her

parents’ longstanding love of education.

Thus, in 1978, the Orrin L. and

Mary Veronica Ryan Arnold Endowed

Scholarship was created.

That scholarship led to another and

another and yet another. Now, four endowed

scholarships honoring members

of the Ryan family will be awarded to

students each fall.

A unique chapter to this family’s history

is their multiple connections with the

University. The Ryan’s four daughters

are all alumnae — Mary Veronica Ryan

Arnold JC’42, Sister Monica Ryan JC’44,

Margaret Ryan RN’49 and Katie Ryan

Schmidt RN’54. The Ryan parents were

not the only ones who advocated on behalf

of education; Sister Monica served as

a much beloved Mount Mercy philosophy

professor from 1955 to 1994.

Sister Monica’s reputation as a rigorous

yet caring teacher was not without

merit. For many years, she was the

only instructor for the required philosophy

course, so she touched countless

lives and left an impact that still resonates

with her former students. Before

Sister Monica passed away in 2000,

“students who had graduated and

were visiting town again would call

her up and take her to lunch,” remembers

Margaret Ryan. Sister Monica’s

dedication to academics was honored

when Mount Mercy created the Sister

Monica Ryan Endowed Scholarship

upon her retirement in 1994.

But perhaps no greater manifestation

of a love of learning can be found than

in the Ryans’ granddaughter Suzie

Schmidt Cook ’89, daughter of Katie

Ryan Schmidt. Cook passed away from

breast cancer in November 2009, but her

tremendous outlook on life, tireless work

ethic and enthusiasm for enhancing educational

opportunities for students forever

will live on through the Suzie Schmidt

Cook Endowed Scholarship (Title III).

Cook chose to leave her legacy through

this endowed scholarship, which was

formally established by her mother in

6

of learners

The Ryan family (far left)

has left a legacy that

will impact countless

generations of students

– most recently through

the Suzie Schmidt Cook

Endowed Scholarship

(Title III), in honor

of Suzie Cook (left),

who passed away in

November 2009.

December 2009. “It was her idea to set

up a scholarship,” says Schmidt. “She

truly believed if you get an education,

you can do anything.” Like her grandparents

before her, Cook took the gift

of knowledge seriously. “She really

valued her education at Mount Mercy,”

says Schmidt. “She was always quick

to point out that she graduated from

Mount Mercy.”

Family, friends, colleagues and high

school and college classmates have

contributed more than $15,000 to Suzie’s

endowed scholarship. These funds

all are being matched by the Title III

grant, resulting in an endowment of

more than $30,000 that honors Cook.

Ryan family members have been

dedicated contributors to their scholarships,

which have allowed the funds

to grow over the years and provide

ever more financial support to Mount

Mercy students.

In a poem, “I Want to Be Remembered,”

that Cook wrote months

before she died, she captured her vision

of the scholarship in just the few lines

excerpted here:

I want to be remembered

For working hard

and being proud to do it.

For working smart to prove I could do it.

For working with others and

making sure they, too, could do it.

2009–10 Honor Roll of Donors

Title III grant program strengthens

Mount Mercy endowment

Future generations of Mount Mercy University students will benefit from

16 new endowments created through a federal program that concluded

September 30, 2010.

In 2005, Mount Mercy was awarded a $1.8 million Title III Strengthening

Institutions federal grant. The grant was designed to infuse technology in

new and revised curriculum in the nursing and computer science programs.

Approximately one-sixth of the grant was dedicated to building Mount Mercy’s

endowment by providing one-to-one matching funds for new endowment

funds. During the five-year grant period, donors have established the new

endowments with investments of $337,625. That sum was matched in full

by the U.S. Department of Education’s Title III program, resulting in a total

investment of $675,250 in Mount Mercy’s endowment.

Donations to endowed funds are invested prudently and in perpetuity, and a

portion of the return is used each year to support the scholarship or program

selected by the donor.

No form of investment is more important to a university’s long-term success

than its endowment, which is why the Board of Trustees have made growing

the endowment a priority in Mount Mercy’s strategic plan.

Thanks to all the alumni, faculty, parents and friends who have stepped

forward to give generous endowment gifts to maintain Mount Mercy’s strength

and protect its legacy for future generations.

Emeritus Vice President of Development Sister Mary Cephas Wichman

(third from left) greets Tom and Kathleen Aller of Alliant Energy and

Ron Olson of Paulsen Electric at the President’s Dinner June 16,

2010. Alliant Energy, in addition to partnering with Mount Mercy

on sustainability efforts, is one of many companies that match

employees’ gifts to Mount Mercy. In the last 10 years, the Alliant

Energy Foundation has provided $34,872 in matching funds to

Mount Mercy. Paulsen Electric, also a long-time Mount Mercy

supporter, is helping with the University Center project. The company

has provided in-kind donations to Mount Mercy since 1967, when it

donated materials and labor costs for outdoor lighting on campus.

Mount Mercy alumni participation matters!

Step forward. Give back.

Mount Mercy students benefit everyday from the generosity of alumni and friends.

Annual gifts provide hundreds of scholarships to students who may not have the capacity to afford

a Mount Mercy education, fund student service trips, enhance campus safety, maintain facilities

and ensure continued institutional growth and vitality. Support to the Mount Mercy Fund also has

expanded academic, athletic and fine arts programs at the University.

All annual gifts are crucial to Mount Mercy, but those from alumni have added importance.

Why is Mount Mercy alumni participation so important?

• The term alumni participation, when used in higher education, specifically means the

percentage of alumni who make an annual financial gift to their alma mater.

• U.S. News & World Report considers alumni participation to be a strong indicator of student

satisfaction with their educational experience, and the publication uses alumni participation as

a key metric in its annual rankings of colleges and universities. Foundations and corporations

also gauge alumni participation when deliberating grants. Their rationale is “if alumni do not

support a college or university, why should we?”

• For participation rankings, it’s not the dollar amount that matters, but rather the number of

alumni who give at any level. Gifts of any size — $25, $250, or $2,500 — equally impact these

rankings.

• Although national rankings and recognition increase the value of a Mount Mercy degree,

the bottom line is that alumni gifts sustain Mount Mercy University. Collectively, the many

annual, individual gifts enable us to provide much needed scholarships, services, programs and

upgraded facilities for our current students.

Give back so others may step forward:

• Give safely and easily online at www.mtmercy.edu/give.

• Simply mail a check payable to the Mount Mercy Fund, Mount Mercy University, 1330

Elmhurst Drive NE, Cedar Rapids, Iowa 52402.

• Contact a Mount Mercy representative at giving@mtmercy.edu to arrange a personal

appointment and campus tour and discover how you can make a difference in Mount Mercy’s

continued success!

Endowed scholarships are investments that are held in perpetuity, with the money earned from these

investments used to provide scholarships to deserving students each year. Our Mercy mission comes with an

obligation to help ensure that a Mount Mercy education remains affordable for all students and families.

We are grateful to the generous donors who have partnered with Mount Mercy to establish the endowed

scholarships listed below. Please note that “Donors” indicate new contributions to endowed scholarship

funds between July 1, 2009, and June 30, 2010.

The Mount Mercy endowment:

Supporting current and future needs

Mount Mercy’s endowment provides valuable financial support for the current and future needs

of the University’s students. Indeed, growing the endowment is a key component of the University’s

strategic plan, so that there is perpetual funding for student scholarships, faculty support

and key programs and initiatives on campus.

Unlike annual contributions, endowment funds are invested to provide steady amounts of

spendable income over time. A portion of the annual income generated by the endowment

is used each year to support the scholarship or program designated by the donor. The Board

of Trustees determines what percentage shall be distributed every year. For fiscal year 2010,

acknowledging national economic challenges and decreased investment returns, the University

trustees approved a 3.5 percent distribution.

2010 Highlights

In fiscal year 2010, the Mount Mercy endowment:

• Added eight new named endowment funds — six scholarships and two funds supporting

Mount Mercy programs — for a total of 175 endowments.

• Distributed $519,200 for scholarships and programs, as designated by donors.

• Earned a 17.6 percent return on investment.

• Ended the year with a fair market value of $19,637,030.

Growth

At the end of fiscal year 2010, Mount

Mercy’s endowment stood at $19.6 million,

compared to $15.7 million the previous

year. The one-year return on the endowment

was 17.6 percent for fiscal year 2010. The

average annual compound rate of return

for the three- and five-year periods was

-4.7 percent and 2.7 percent respectively.

Since 1990, Mount Mercy’s endowment has

returned 7.2 percent.

Investment Objective

The long-term objective of the University’s

investment policy is to achieve consistent annual

earnings of 7.5 percent per year. These

earnings support the purposes designated by

endowment donors, while also providing for

growth in the fund’s principal.

Investment Oversight

Mount Mercy’s Board of Trustees, with
