Philosophy of Education
The Copley-Fairlawn City School District Board of
Education is committed to providing a program of education
which is consistent with the following beliefs:
1. A free society depends upon rational, responsible, and
effective citizens.
2. The intellectual, emotional, physical, cultural, social,
aesthetic, and ethical development of all students is
necessary so that they may achieve their full potential.
3. A variety in the curriculum, in methods of instruction,
evaluation, and materials should be provided to
accommodate the different needs of all students.
Character Traits
The primary goal of schools is to communicate cognitive information; however, this cannot be presented in a vacuum.
Schools must also include content that teaches good citizenship.
The pluralism of the United States has greatly enriched its culture. An outgrowth of this pluralism is a diverse value
system refl ecting the contributions of many ethnic, religious, and racial groups; yet, a consensus of common character
traits transcends this cultural diversity.
Character traits for which students should strive have been identifi ed by the Copley-Fairlawn City Schools Community
Character Education Study Committee. These include, but are not limited to, the following character traits:
Compassion Students should show care, concern, and empathy for the needs of other persons without
regard to race, religion, gender, age, economic status, and/or physical and mental condition.
Courtesy Students should display good manners and politeness, showing the same respect for others as
they would wish for themselves.
Tolerance Students should strive to discover and learn about people who are different from themselves
and about cultures different from their own.
4. Involvement in the learning process has more meaning
when students participate in setting goals and objectives with
effective adult guidance.
5. The development of self-appraisal skills and decisionmaking
techniques should help students in assuming
responsibility for setting realistic short and long-term
personal, academic, and career goals.
Honesty
Self-Discipline
Diligence
Responsibility
Students should be truthful and trustworthy in their relationships with others.
Students should realize the motivations for their actions and give priority to duties and
responsibilities rather than to confl icting impulses and desires, being willing to sacrifi ce present
satisfaction in order to receive long-term benefi ts.
Students should pursue worthwhile endeavors, showing persistence, care, and effort.
Students should exercise sound thinking and good judgment, as they are personally and
ethically accountable for their actions. Students should work with others to strengthen the
family and improve their community, the state, the nation, and the world for everyone.
6. Working cooperatively with parents and other citizens,
as well as business, industry, and community agencies
strengthens active involvement in all phases of planning,
developing, and implementing the educational program.
CROSS REFERENCE: AE, School District Goals and
Objectives
Self-Respect
Students should consider the person within themselves, realize their worth and dignity as
human beings, and account for their strengths as well as their weaknesses.
Courage Students should develop personal strength and stability to draw upon in times of adversity.
Integrity Students should acquire sound character traits and thereafter seek to live up to them in a
consistent manner.
The ultimate goal of education is the positive infl uence of student behavior. Students who are committed to these
basic principles will gain respect for themselves and others and will work to improve the social and natural environment
for all. The school has the unique opportunity to develop and nurture these traditional principles in every member of its
community.
category by generating forty-seven thousand milliwatts per minute. This is enough to charge
six cell phones simultaneously. They also received the Judges choice award for outstanding
performance, knowledge, and documentation. Team two, consisting of Alex Klimo, Thomas
Kimmins, Jose Suarez, and Chris Dugan came in second place winning a trophy and 75 dollars.
The team came in second for power output as well, generating forty-three thousand milliwatts per
minute.
Both teams worked for two months on the research and development of the most effective wind
turbine design. The teams used their research fi ndings to design the turbine and housing in
SolidWorks, a CAD software program. Each team created several blades from different materials,
including plastic blades made on one of the Engineering class’s 3D printers and other blades that
were sculpted from wood. The students spent hours testing the various blades and refi ning their
designs for the optimum output. The environmental impact of their designs was also researched,
and although their turbines had the most output in the competition, the noise of the turbines was
minimal.
Copley-Fairlawn City School
Athletic Passes Available
The Copley High School Athletic Department will offer
several athletic passes for the adults and students living in the
Copley-Fairlawn community.
The Student Athletic Admission Card will be available for
purchase for all current Copley High School students in grades
get them into EVERY HOME ATHLETIC EVENT (except
for home tournament events) for the 2013-2014 school year.
The Student Athletic Admission Card is available through the
Copley High School Athletic Department.
The Season Athletic Pass is available to adults in the
community and CFCS students in grades K-8. The cost
is $65.00 for adults and $42.00 for students. The passes
provide 20 admissions to any home high school athletic event;
representing over 40% savings. The Season Athletic Pass
is available in the Copley High School Athletic Department
beginning August 12, 2013.
The Copley-Fairlawn Resident Senior Citizen Pass is
available to all senior citizens residing in the Copley-Fairlawn
City School district who holds a Golden Buckeye Card. This
two year pass offers free attendance to all Copley High School
home athletic events, music programs, plays and natatorium
programs. This complimentary pass is available in the Board
of Education office, 3797 Ridgewood Road, Copley beginning
Congratulations
Class of 2013
117 th Commencement, June 2, 2013
On June 2, 2013 Copley High School held its One Hundred and Seventeenth annual
Commencement exercises. The Class of 2013 and all that supported them on their
journey to graduation should be proud of all that they have accomplished.
At the ceremony the district said goodbye to an outstanding group of graduates. Of the
251 graduating seniors, sixty-eight students graduated with an Honors Diploma and
forty-nine students ended their high school careers on the Academic Honor Roll. The
class also earned over one hundred fifteen scholarships in excess of 3.1 million dollars
that were offered and awarded through the Copley-Fairlawn Schools Foundation, local
community members and businesses, and colleges and universities. The district extends
a congratulations to this truly impressive group of seniors..
The success of the class of 2013 was demonstrated through their achievements in the
classroom, on the field of competition, on the stage, and in the many extra-and cocurricular
activities available at CHS. This senior class is able to boast many studentathletes
that have signed commitments to continue their athletic careers at various
colleges. Their hard work and dedication to their academics and athletics is to be
commended
We would like to wish our graduates the best of luck with their future endeavors.
Free and Reduced-Price Lunch Policy for the 2013-2014 School Year
In accordance with the National School Lunch Program for
children who are unable to pay the full price of meals, the
Copley-Fairlawn City School District announces its 2013-
2014 school year policy for free and reduced-price meals.
The Board of Education, in compliance with state and
federal requirements, has adopted the income eligibility
scale (below) for free and reduced-priced meals.
To receive free meals, the total household annual income
applicable to household size must be equal to or less than
that indicated in Column B. To qualify for reduced-price
meals, the household income must be equal to or less
than that indicated in Column C and greater than that in
Column B for the applicable household size.
Children from households with income at or below the
levels shown may be eligible for free or reduced-price
meals. Application forms for this confidential program
will be distributed to all homes in a letter to parents and
guardians. If you do not receive the application form during
the first week of school, please contact the school office.
Students who received meal benefits at the end of
the school year will receive benefits until October 1, 2013,
when a new, approved application must be on file.
In the operation of programs providing food for
children, no child will be discriminated against because
of race, sex, color, national origin, age, military status or
handicap. If members of a household believe they have
been discriminated against, they should write immediately
to the Secretary of Agriculture, Washington, D.C. 20250.
Applications for the free and reduced-price lunch program
will be accepted anytime during the school year. Anyone
who would like to review the policy is welcome to read
the complete policy, which is available at the Board of
Education Office.
Free and Low-Cost Health Care—Families with children
eligible for school meals may also be eligible for free or
CHILD FIND – A Search for
All Copley-Fairlawn Children
with Disabilities
What is Child Find?
Child Find is the process of identifying, locating and
evaluating children with disabilities (ages 3-21) who
may be in need of special education services. Many
times students with disabilities are preschoolers and
their parents may not be aware of existing problems
and programs that are available to help.
What does disability mean?
In this situation, disability includes a variety of
conditions such as hearing impairments, visual
impairments, speech or language impairments, specific
learning disabilities, emotional disabilities, multiple
disabilities, mental retardation, physical impairments,
autism, and traumatic brain injury.
How can you help?
If you have a child or know of a child with a disability
who is not being served, please contact the Copley-
Invitation To Attend Grades K-4 and 5-8 Open Houses
Families of students in grades Kindergarten through 8 are cordially
invited to attend Open Houses.
Arrowhead Primary, Fort Island Primary, Herberich Primary, and
Copley-Fairlawn Middle School buildings will hold their open
houses before school begins. You are invited to come to school for
the following open houses: Kindergarten is Monday, August 19
from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.; grade 5 is Tuesday, August 20 from
5:00 to 6:30 p.m.; grades 1-4 is Wednesday, August 21 from 3:00
p.m. to 5:00 p.m.; and grades 6-8 is August 21 from 5:00 p.m. to
7:00 p.m. No group meetings will be convened.
This is a time for parents, children, and grandparents to visit
the schools. Many times the “first-day jitters” and anxieties of
children can be allayed by affording them the opportunity to meet
their new teachers in a friendly atmosphere with their families.
The non-threatening nature of the open house combined with
children observing and participating in positive, friendly, family
discussions with their new teachers can put the minds of children
at ease and pay rich dividends in giving them a “first-class” start.
Since we are opening the buildings for this special occasion, we
kindly request that the buildings not be entered prior to 3:00
p.m. for grades 1-4. As can be imagined, the teachers will be
very busy getting their rooms and papers ready. They simply
cannot be involved in discussions and conversations that would
detract from their full preparation for open house. Thank you for
understanding and for your cooperation. We want the event to be
School Lunch News
Grades K-4: $2.75 Grades 5-12: $3.00
Free or reduced-price lunch program: A free or reduced-price
lunch program is available for all eligible students. Please contact
the building principal to apply for this confidential program.
(Note: Participation in the free and reduced-price program helps
the district with funding for other areas of our curriculum. This
program is available all school year.)
Our food service department now operates under a computerized
point of sale system which allows parents/guardians to deposit
money into their student’s account. All of the students have been
assigned an ID number which they will keep from kindergarten
through 12th grade. Parents/guardians are encouraged to prepay
for their student’s lunch with a check, cash or over the internet
using the Pay For It link on the District’s website. Pay For It is
successful as well as beneficial to all. Please feel free to call your
individual school building prior to the open house or first day of
school if you have questions.
For grades K-4, your attendance is also important for a second
reason. We will be sending home with you the opening-day packet
of information and forms (including the Emergency Information
Form). The opening-day packet contains valuable information
for you and your child. In order that we can be better prepared
to meet the needs of your child, we request that the forms be
completed and returned on the first day of school, Thursday,
August 22. Thank you in advance for your assistance with this!
The cafeteria staff will be available to answer your questions and
accept payments for pre-paid meals and free and reduced-lunch
applications.
Booths will be available in the gymnasiums for our service groups
to share information with you. Groups participating include the
following: PTA, Scouts, local athletics, and others. Plan to take
the time to investigate your areas of interest.
The teachers and staff look forward to seeing you at the Open
Houses. Come anytime between the times listed.
available 24/7 to put money on a student’s account. Students
still have the option of purchasing their lunch on a daily basis
with cash. No change will be given it will be put on the student’s
account. All money left on the account at the end of the year stays
with the student and will transfer to the next grade and school
year. There will be NO CHARGES in the school cafeterias. You
might want to put money on the student’s account for days when
they might forget their lunch or lunch money. Please do not
combine lunch money on the same check or money order for
fees. It would also help us if you put your student’s name on the
check
The Food Service Department serves over 200,000 meals to
Copley-Fairlawn students. Food service is a self operating
business within the school system that should take in enough
money to cover all its costs, including labor and benefits. Some
students rely on the school lunch program to meet many of their
daily food needs. Meals are planned according to recommended
daily allowances. A student’s participation in the school lunch
program is the guideline used by both the state and federal
government to determine reimbursement and commodity food
distribution.
