Message from the School Board
To Our School Families:
Welcome to our learning community for 2013-14!
It is both a privilege and a pleasure to provide you with this calendar, which not only
includes the important dates for your participation in your child’s education, but also
showcases some of the wonderful art produced by students from each of our 26
schools.
Studies long have shown that students benefit when their parents are involved in their
school life, from Open Houses to Back-to-School Nights to Parent-Teacher
Conferences. We hope you will have the opportunity to meet and talk with your child’s
principal and teachers during the school year and that you will not hesitate to contact
them with your questions or suggestions. They stand ready to help.
This calendar also includes such useful information as program opportunities we offer
for children and adults, the schedule for important tests during the year, meeting dates
for our Board, instructions for learning of school closures or delayed openings, child
nutrition and meal prices, and a directory for both school and central office staff.
We also urge you to visit www.k12albemarle.org/notifications for a listing and
description of all notifications the school division is required to provide to parents
according to federal and state guidelines.
This year we would like to thank the more than 10,000 students, parents, employees,
and community leaders who shared their ideas and aspirations for our students and
helped us envision what a world-class education school system should look like. Their
invaluable contributions are reflected in our updated strategic plan, Horizon 2020,
summarized on page 5. Our revised strategic plan supports our commitment to our
mission, vision and values through five key commitments: We will engage every
student; we will implement balanced assessments; we will improve opportunity and
achievement; we will create and expand partnerships; and we will optimize resources.
Each of us—school board members, administrators, staff and teachers—are
dedicated to bringing the vision and mission of Albemarle County Public Schools to
life in our classrooms every day for every student, and we would like to take this
opportunity to acknowledge the contributions of those who share our commitment to
excellence in our school division.
The Board of Supervisors continues to provide necessary financial resources.
Our local businesses, civic organizations, and volunteers unselfishly offer advice
and financial support, as well as internship opportunities and mentoring. Our
administrators, staff and teachers bring exceptional focus and energy to their
responsibilities. Our parents set high expectations for the quality of education in our
county. And, of course, the enthusiasm and engagement of our students in their
learning is invaluable.
Together, these contributions ensure that our graduating students are well prepared to
be outstanding citizens who are college and career ready to thrive in a global
economy and in our global environment.
Sincerely,
Message from the Superintendent
Welcome New and
Returning Families!
One of my favorite
discussions occurred
during one of our
summer academies,
when a middle school
student was explaining
the mathematical
principles involved in his project as a marble twisted its
way down some plastic tubing. I was fascinated by his
explanation and his answer when I asked him what he
wanted to be once he graduated from high school. “An
entrepreneur,” he enthusiastically responded.
I can safely say I have asked that question of many
students over the years and never received that
answer. It is a sign of a different time.
We have seen other examples: Our CoderDojo
academy, for one. It’s a new learning environment
where students of all ages and skill levels learn multiple
computer languages; how to design and develop
computer apps, web sites and video games; and how
to program robots. We tripled the number of seats in
our academy this year after our 2012 waiting list
reached 1,000 students. Still, we had a waiting list of
several hundred.
We began a new program this past summer that
certainly reflects the world around us—Maker Spaces,
which teaches design and production skills to
elementary school students. It’s a relatively new
concept that adds the arts or creativity to the STEM
subjects—science, technology, engineering and math.
Students learn how to transform their own concepts
from paper to finished product through the use of
computer programming, electronics, robotics, 3D
printing, prototyping, even music composition.
These academies and our own
Design 2015 pilot programs have
one unifying purpose—preparing
students to succeed in their own
century—the 21st century—and
leaving behind the instructional
methods and approaches that
prepared many of us for a
century gone past.
This year we began the second
year of our Health and Medical
Sciences Academy at Monticello
High School. Open to all public
school students in the county, the
academy uses case studies and
project-based learning to prepare students for success
in the broad range of health-related professions that will
be required in the future, from technician to EMT to
veterinarian to physician.
This also will be the planning year for a third center of
excellence in our division—an Environmental Studies
Academy at Western Albemarle High School. Given the
need for professional expertise in the clean energy
field, applied technologies for agriculture, the use of
Geospatial Information Systems, oceanography, and
research and policy, our graduates can have a
significant impact on shaping the world’s quality of life.
MESA, Albemarle High School’s Math, Engineering &
Science Academy, just graduated its first class of
students who completed four years in the program.
Collectively, these students earned over $1 million in
academic scholarships to such nationally-renowned
engineering schools as MIT, Purdue and Stanford.
While the dynamic power of technology and the global
economy and environment will create significant
challenges and opportunities, education at its most
fundamental level
always will be about people.
I hope you will use this school calendar to become
more involved with your child’s education through
conferences at school, active membership in your local
PTO organization, as a classroom volunteer or mentor,
or as a supporter of athletic, cultural, school-wide and
Our highly dedicated administrators, teachers, staff,
child nutrition and building services professionals, and
bus drivers stand ready to serve our more than 13,000
students and their families with uncommon dedication
to excellence. Through their contributions and with your
engagement, I look forward to an exciting and
successful school year for all of our students.
Thank you for your continued support of public
education in Albemarle County.
Support Our
Learners
The Superintendent offers parents six tips for supporting
learners in the transition back to school and building
good working relationships with teachers:
1. Re-establish your child’s bedtime routine.
If your child has been staying up later on summer
evenings, begin to adjust his/her sleep schedule
back to school year bedtime hours at least one
week before school starts. A well-rested child is a
more attentive child in school. In fact, the symptoms
of too little sleep and attention disorders are very
similar. A good night of sleep pays off for your child
in school.
2. Discuss breakfast and lunch choices that
sustain energy and promote wellness.
Diet impacts body chemistry in a variety of ways—
particularly a child’s sugar, salt and fat intake. The
U.S. Department of Agriculture offers a number of
website resources at http://teamnutrition.usda.gov
regarding healthy lifestyle choices for children that
address diet, wellness and fitness.
3. Plan to attend your school’s Open House and
Back-to-School activities.
For both younger and older children, going to
school with you to meet teachers sends a message
from the start that you will be involved as a partner
with the teacher in supporting your child’s
education. See pages 10-11 for your school’s
schedule!
4. Consider volunteering in any way you can.
The countless and varied tasks performed by
volunteers are vital to the continued operation and
success of our schools. Sharing your life
experiences, memories, technical know-how, or
friendship with a young person can make a huge
impact on a student’s life and achievement. Get
started by contacting our Community Engagement
Office at (434) 293-0288 or online at:
www.k12albemarle.org/volunteers
5. Don’t wait to contact your child’s school about
a question or concern.
Little problems quickly can escalate into larger
ones, and while all of our workloads have increased
because of e-mail and voicemail, we want to know
when something is on your mind. Issues that should
not wait include bullying of your child or another
child, bus problems, or your child feeling
JOSEFINE VAN BEEK
Stone-Robinson Elementary School
overwhelmed with homework or upset about his/her
relationship with a teacher. If your inner instinct
says that something isn’t going well, please reach
out to your child’s teacher.
6. Thank an educator for helping your child or
other children in some special way.
The many fabulous educators in our schools, just
as teachers before them, work tirelessly because of
their commitment to the success of their students.
There is nothing valued more by an educator than a
personal note, e-mail, or call from a parent saying,
“I appreciated when …”
The Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT)
measures critical reading skills, writing skills, and math problem-solving skills, and
provides first-hand practice for college entrance exams, such as the SAT. Taking the
test can qualify students for scholarships and other honors. Typically, students take
the test as sophomores and juniors, although some take it earlier. High schools will
offer the PSAT/NMSQT on Wednesday, October 16, 2013.
Schedule Changes Due to Inclement Weather
Every school day, our buses travel a geographical area of nearly 750 square miles to transport our students to and from school. The
decision to change the school schedule or cancel school due to inclement weather is based solely on student safety and takes into
consideration:
Road conditions for bus travel and student and staff drivers;
Weather forecasts; and
Assessments by law enforcement, the Virginia Department of Transportation, and other localities.
The school division considers four options when bad weather becomes a factor in the school schedule:
Delay the opening of school by one hour;
Delay the opening of school by two hours;
Dismiss school early; or
Cancel school for the day.
Albemarle County’s large size and mixture of rural and urban settings creates a unique challenge for the school division in
determining school delays and closings. Our buses travel roads ranging from multi-lane highways to narrow dirt roads crossing
mountains and one-lane bridges. Often roads in the urban ring around Charlottesville may be clear while those in more rural areas
may be inaccessible for a longer period of time following a storm. When a significant portion of the county’s roads cannot be
navigated safely by school buses, the decision is made to close school.
For more information about the school division’s transportation procedures during inclement weather, visit our School Closings web
page: www.k12albemarle.org/closings
Notification of School Schedule Changes
Families can learn the division’s school schedule status during inclement weather in several ways:
Receive an alert from the Electronic School Notification System.
Parents are provided an opportunity at the start of each school year to enroll to receive electronic notifications from the school division
by phone (landline or cellular) and/or e-mail. Parents also may enroll at any time by contacting their child’s school.
Call the School Schedule Hotline.
Call (434) 296-5886 to listen to a pre-recorded message about school operations for the day.
Visit our School Closings web page.
School schedule changes are broadcast on several local radio and television stations, as well as local media websites.
Decision-Making
Timeline for
School Schedule
Changes
Each inclement weather event is
unique, and the timeline below
represents a general guideline of
the decision-making process.
2 to 4 a.m. Transportation
Services Road Assessment Team
drives assigned routes to
evaluate conditions and hazards
for school buses in six sections of
the county. Team monitors
weather forecasts and consults
with other agencies and localities.
4:30 a.m. Road Assessment
Team reports to Director of
Transportation.
4:45 a.m. Director of
Transportation submits
recommendation to the
Superintendent’s Office, who
in turn makes the final decision
regarding school operations.
Inclement Weather Make-Up Days
The first two days of school missed due to inclement weather will be made up with
hours accumulated by the schools in excess of the minimum 990 hours required by
the Virginia Standards of Accreditation. Each school will develop a virtual learning plan
for teachers to communicate learning work to students on at least the first two days
missed due to inclement weather. This plan will be attached to the School
Improvement Plan.
If more than two days are missed due to inclement weather, families and staff should
plan for the school year to extend beyond June 6, 2014. The third and additional
missed days will be made in the following order: June 9, 10, 11 … Teacher work days
at the end of the year will move in accordance with make-up days and will not be lost.
