Fáskrúðsfjörður gengur inn í Austfjarðahálendið á milli Vattarness og Hafnarness. Inn af

botni fjarðarins liggur dalur með talsverðu undirlendi, grösugur og víða skógi vaxinn. Búðir

er kauptún við botn fjarðarins. Verslun hófst á Búðum upp úr 1880. Frá síðari hluta 19. aldar

og fram undir 1935 voru Búðir helsta bækistöð franskrar skútuútgerðar á Austfjörðum. Þar

var franskur konsúll, franskt sjúkrahús, frönsk kapella og kirkjugarður. Þá mun franska ríkið

hafa átt hlut að því að héraðslæknir var staðsettur á Búðum.

Fáskrúðsfjörður is in the centre of the Austfirðir in between Vattarnes and Hafnarnes. At

the bottom of the fjord is a grassy valley that is widely forested. Búðir is the name of the

town at the bottom of the fjord. Búðir became a trading post in 1880. From the later part of

the 19th century up until 1935, Búðir was the main station for French fishermen in the East

of Iceland. There was a French consul, a French hospital, a French chapel and a graveyard. It

is also believed that France played a part in the fact that the district doctor was located in

Búðir.
