Editorial So far, 2007 has been a good year for Alumni Relations in Singapore Polytechnic. Thiru We witnessed revival among alumni with a strong passion and fervour to do something to help their fellow SP alumni. At least two stories in this issue show the strong spirit of helping each other among SP alumni. One of the stories is about the Lunar New Year Lo-Hei dinner leading to a series of rapid donations to the SP Student Needy fund by the members of the Singapore Polytechnic Entrepreneurs’ Club (SPEC). Another even more touching story is our cover story about our first Alumni Scholarship recipient running 30 km in the Poly 50 Campus Race to raise $11,937 for this year’s Alumni Scholarship Awards. We also feature this year’s Graduation 2007 story of our outstanding graduates from the Class of 2007 who have achieved excellent results as they completed their courses of study at SP. The good news is that the desire among SP graduates to continue upgrading themselves through life-long learning has remained high. Graduate Employment Survey data of the previous 3 years reveal that the number of SP graduates either pursuing degree studies or planning to do so within 5 years of graduation has been on the uptrend. There has also been good news on the employment front in the Graduate Employment Survey 2006 findings. GES 2006 findings revealed that 91.3% of last year’s SP graduates found jobs within 6 months of graduation and their average salary was $1711 per month. Moreover, the economy has been doing better this year and the Graduate Employment Survey 2007 which is scheduled to begin in October 2007 should produce an even more optimistic picture for next year’s graduates. It has been just over a year since I had the privilege of working as the Alumni Relations Manager while Ms Pearly Gan has been away in Ho Chi Min City with her family. It has been an interesting and exciting year but it is all too soon coming to an end. My secondment to the Department of Student & Alumni Affairs is ending and this will be my swan song issue as editor. I will begin a new chapter in my career at SP, after spending 21 years in the School of Business as a lecturer and a year and half as Alumni Relations Manager. As we usher in the New Year in 2008, I will take up a new appointment in the Department of Industry Services on 1 January 2008. I look forward to maintaining contact with all SP alumni in my new appointment. Ong Tiong Hui Editor There is also strong evidence of the desire to help fellow SP Alumni beyond monetary terms. The first Alumni Homecoming event for this year was held on 29 June 2007 at the SPGG ballroom. It was attended by no less than 60 young SP alumni who are either studying at one of the local universities or working. The idea behind the event was to form support networks among alumni so that they can help SP alumni when they join as university freshmen in the first year of degree studies.
