Kaufman also locates nest sites on cliff
ledges, on muskrat houses and in trees. The
nest is usually built with a slight depression
comprising a shallow bowl of sticks, grass,
weeds, moss, and down. Most Atlantic flyway
geese mating and nesting occurs in
Canada, hence the name.
The female lays, on average, four to
seven white eggs and she incubates them
for 25 to 28 days, while the male stands
guard nearby. Both parents forage for food
for the new goslings but the young feed
themselves. The first flight of the young occurs
at age six to nine weeks.
A popular local sport, Canada goose
hunting season continues until the end of
January in Maryland. The Maryland Department
of Natural Resources predicted a
large number of geese would return to
Maryland from Canada during the hunting
season. We hear the boom of guns in the
morning during the hunting season. The
clever geese in our cove learn to stay until
after shooting hours before heading to the
fields to feed.
We love to watch the geese take off as
they patter and splash across the water until
lift off. Soon in V-formation they head to
feeding grounds. On return in the evening
they circle the water and then one at a time
or in groups they glide into the cove, honk
and then settle in for the night. We welcome
their return each year and their honking
sounds soothe us off to dream land.
