Astigmatism is an optical defect which
prevents light from being properly focused
onto the back of the eye. Irregular curvatures
of the cornea or lens of the eye are
common causes of astigmatism. It can be
asymptomatic if mild, but often can cause
blurred or double vision, eye strain and
headaches. Approximately 1 in 3 people,
children and adults alike, have some degree
of astigmatism. There are several different
tests your eye care specialist can perform
to determine whether or not you have astigmatism.
If you have astigmatism, your eye care
specialist can determine the degree of
severity and how it should be best treated.
In younger individuals, glasses, special
contact lenses and laser refractive surgery
are all possible treatment options. For individuals
with astigmatism and cataracts,
there are advanced technology artificial
lenses that may be implanted at the time of
cataract surgery which can eliminate or
greatly reduce the need for glasses at distance
after surgery.
