Campus Gears up for 100th Gala

The Table is Set for
Celebration Features
SUNY Delhi’s 100 th
Renowned Wine Educator
“ I am thrilled to be part of Delhi’s 100 th
birthday celebration,” says Kevin Zraly.
“I cannot think of a better way to celebrate
than by raising funds to help students
succeed.”
On the Cover: Assistant Professor
Jessica Backus-Foster goes over the
finer details for SUNY Delhi’s Centennial
Gala with hospitality students Jessie
Caputo, Chris McManus, Ed Maley and
Christian-Robert Toledo.
A special alumnus is returning to the
campus to toast SUNY Delhi’s 100 th
birthday. World renowned wine expert
and educator Kevin Zraly ’70 will headline
the college’s Centennial Gala on May 4.
“We’re honored that Kevin has cleared his schedule to
join us for the gala,” says President Candace Vancko.
“It will be a memorable evening as we celebrate a milestone
in Delhi’s history with one of our most
accomplished alumni.”
Zraly has gone on to become one of the world’s
leading wine authorities. He authored Windows on
the World Complete Wine Course, which has sold over
three million copies, as well as Ultimate Wine
Companion, Kevin Zraly’s American Wine Guide,
Kevin Zraly’s Wine Journal, and A Glass Half Full: A
Cellar Master’s Journey Through Life and Wine. Zraly
has been honored with the James Beard Award for
Wine and Spirits Professional of the Year, Santé’s Wine
Professional of the Year Award, the European Wine
Council Lifetime Achievement Award and the James
Beard Lifetime Achievement Award. He returns to
Delhi to collaborate with hospitality faculty and
students to create an event that is sure to top last
year’s opening gala.
“This will be an opportunity for the Delhi community
to experience wines Kevin has specially selected,” says
David Brower ’00, Hospitality Department Chair. “This
is also a unique opportunity for our students and faculty
to learn and work with a premiere wine educator.”
Zraly’s wine selections are only part of the evening
celebration. Supporting scholarships is a goal of the
centennial campaign, so the gala dinner will benefit
the Kevin Zraly Scholarship Endowment. Founded in
1999, this endowment has grown to become one of the
largest sources of annual scholarships for hospitality
students at SUNY Delhi.
The May 4 event begins at 6 p.m. with a champagne
reception. Dinner is set for 7 p.m. and features a menu
of saffron cavatelli with fruits de mer, roasted tomatopreserved
lemon broth as an appetizer and an entrée
of roasted rib eye and braised short rib withherbed
potato gratin, spring vegetables and sherry jus. Dessert
will feature a hazelnut gateaux with caramel, green
apple sorbet and dried cherry sauce.
“ Teaching is a way
I can give back to
the profession...”
Dr. Allen Wachter
Delhi Professor Named Fulbright Specialist
Associate Professor Allen Wachter, Director of
Delhi’s Veterinary Technology Management
baccalaureate program, has been selected as a
Fulbright Specialist by the J. William Fulbright
Foreign Scholarship Board (FSB).
As a Fulbright Specialist, Dr. Wachter is in the
process of being matched with an overseas
academic institution that has requested
assistance via the Fulbright Commission or
through U.S. embassies. Fulbright Specialists
typically serve two to six weeks in projects that
focus on the development needs of their host
institutions.
The FSB is considering Dr. Wachter for two
projects in Sub-Sahara Africa. The first project
is to develop a veterinary technician program
at the University of Namibia. The second
project is to teach large animal management
to veterinary science students at Mekelle
University in Ethiopia. The final project
selection will be based on a review by Dr.
Wachter’s peers and by FSB.
“Teaching is a way I can give back to the
profession, especially in countries such as
Africa where their lives depend so much
on the care of their animals,” Dr. Wachter
says. Dr. Wachter has prior experience as a
missionary in Zambia where he helped build
an orphanage. “I came back to the U.S. with a
sense that I needed to do more,” he says, and
that led him to pursue a Fulbright exchange.
Students Aid
Community
Students turned out in large numbers to show
their appreciation to the community that
founded their college by assisting area organizations
on Community Service Day in October.
Delhi construction majors
benefit from real world
projects such as this house
they are building in the
Delhi area.
Hudson Valley
Construction Majors
Will Complete
Bachelor’s at Delhi
SUNY Delhi and Hudson Valley Community
College have signed an agreement that
will allow graduates of Hudson Valley’s
Construction Technology and Civil
Engineering Technology degree programs to
spend a fifth semester at Hudson Valley for
continued classroom/laboratory learning and a
sixth semester in an internship before moving
on to a fourth year at Delhi to complete a
bachelor’s degree.
This articulation agreement assures that all credits will transfer seamlessly. It is open to current
students, as well as alumni, of the construction and engineering programs. Students have the
advantage of a junior ranking when beginning at Delhi in their third year.
“Previous students who have taken the path from Hudson Valley to Delhi have experienced
great success in school and in the job market upon graduation. We expect continued academic
excellence from Hudson Valley students, and we’re making transfer more accessible with this
particular agreement,” says Eric Robert ’96, Dean and Associate Professor of Applied Sciences
and Building Technologies.
New Art On Campus
Two works of art, funded through private donations, were installed on
the Delhi campus this fall. “Reunited,” (below) carved from green opal
serpentine by artist Taurai Mutigwa, was donated by Dr. Gary and Lynda
Preiser in memory of their daughter, Sarah, and installed on the Agora.
“Cielo Mobiles,” (above) two aerial sculptures, were installed in the Farrell
Center loft. “Cielo,” which means “in the open air,” was designed and
created by artist Brian Schmitt of Sacramento, CA.
Veterinary Science
Graduates Top
National Average
Graduates of SUNY Delhi’s Veterinary Science
Technology program topped the national
average for the second consecutive year on the
Veterinary Technician National Examination
(VTNE).
Eighty-four percent of Delhi 2012 graduates
who took the exam for the first time surpassed
the national average of 78.5 percent.
“This validates SUNY Delhi’s position as one of
the nation’s premier programs in the Veterinary
Science Technology field,” says Provost John
Nader. “External exams are a great measure of
program quality.”
The Veterinary Technician National
Examination (VTNE) is used to evaluate entrylevel
veterinary technicians’ competency to
practice and be credentialed. Most states and
provinces require a passing score on the VTNE
as a criterion for credentialing. The exam is
administered as a computer-based exam three
times a year throughout the U.S. and Canada
by the American Association of Veterinary
State Boards.
Culinary
Documentary
Premieres
“Mise En Place,” a full-length film produced by Kent Garrett Productions,
premiered on the Delhi campus September 21 at a red-carpet event that kicked off
Family Day Weekend.
Nearly 400 turned out for the film, which chronicles Delhi students’ rise to
national culinary champions in 2010 and follows the five-member team through
try-outs, the busy school year, and to the final competition.
The film offers a very personal and in-depth look into the demanding and
competitive world of high cuisine through the eyes of those just entering their
careers as chefs and is attracting attention beyond Delhi. “Mise En Place” is
currently a finalist in the Buffalo Niagara Film Festival, which runs from
April 10-14.
Delhi Ranks in Top 20
“Best for Vets”
Garrett served as senior producer with the NBC Nightly News with Tom Brokaw
and 10 years before that was a producer with The CBS Evening News with Dan
Rather. During his journalism career, Garrett was honored with two news and
documentary Emmy Awards and a Peabody Award as producer on the National
Education Television series, “Black Journal.” In addition, he has produced three
hour-long, network documentaries for CBS Reports and has worked as news
director in the award-winning WCVB-TV News and Public Affairs unit in
Needham, MA.
SUNY Delhi is ranked 17th on the “Best for Vets: Career
and Technical Colleges” list in the 2013 “Best for Vets” by
Military Times, also earning the title “Military Friendly” title
from G.I. Jobs magazine for the second consecutive year.
The Harlem Globetrotters joined President
Candace Vancko and members of the SUNY Delhi
Student Senate executive board after presenting
her with a special Globetrotter jersey in honor of
the college’s 100th birthday.
Sommo, Krystal Santiago, Joe Michaud,
Sarah Thurgood, Kenny Liranzo, Katherine
McGeary and Coach James Margiotta.
TV Time for
Golf and Turf
Time Warner Sports visited the SUNY Delhi
campus to feature the college’s golf and turf
programs for an episode of “Tee Time” that
aired in the Binghamton and Syracuse areas.
You can see clips of the episode online at
www.youtube.com/user/SUNYDelhiRocks
“To be vet-friendly, you really need to focus on the needs
of the student, which is what we do so well,” says Michele
DeFreece, Director of the Resnick Learning Center/EOP/
Veteran Services. “Whether through enrollment services,
financial aid or academics, we promote a seamless process
for our student veterans.”
Delhi was among more than 650 schools that responded
to the magazine’s survey, which consisted of nearly 150
questions. Scores are based on a college’s demonstration
of specific efforts to accommodate vets and active-duty
service members in areas that they value most in a college
or university.
Following these honors, SUNY Delhi’s Veteran Services
hosted a panel presentation “SUNY Delhi Salutes
Veterans” in conjunction with the college’s Alumni
Association. The presentation connected alumni veterans
with student veterans to promote their college success.
Panelists included: Louis Castellucci ’62, veteran,
retired executive, Port Authority of New York and New
Jersey; Walter Caroompas ’63, veteran, retired bank
executive, member of the SUNY Delhi Alumni Advisory
Council and College Foundation Board; Dominic
Morales, veteran, retired Dean of Applied Sciences and
Technology; Sean Taylor ’09, veteran, Delhi Culinary
Arts graduate; Virginia Giles ’11, student veteran at
SUNY Delhi; and Jim Rogers, Senior Veteran Counselor,
New York State Division of Veterans’ Affairs, veteran.
Delhi-SUNY ESF
Partnership Offers
Exclusive Transfer
Agreement
SUNY Delhi is making it easier for its landscape
architecture majors to take the next step toward
a four-year degree through an exclusive transfer
agreement with the SUNY College of Environmental
Science and Forestry (SUNY-ESF) this fall.
Delhi’s Landscape Management and Design
associate’s degree graduates will be able to pursue a
four-year degree at SUNY-ESF in Syracuse following
the completion of a two-year degree at Delhi.
“This program will be very attractive to students
who can benefit from smaller classrooms and oneon-one
attention in their first years of college,” says
Associate Professor Birgitta Brophy. “Receiving
the specialized attention we provide can translate
into greater success for students in the long run.”
Parade Tradition Continues
As a way to thank local residents for their role in establishing SUNY
Delhi, the college participated in the O’Connor Hospital Holiday Parade
on December 1. The tradition of students participating in Village
parades dates as far back as the 1950’s. Carrying on Delhi’s tradition were
President Candace Vancko and students representing various academic
programs in a college-sponsored float.
SUNY Delhi O'Connor Center
Nationally Recognized
SUNY Delhi has been recognized with the President's Higher Education
Community Service Honor Roll for the efforts of its O'Connor Center
for Community Engagement for the seventh consecutive year.
Delhi has received this prestigious honor every year since the inception
of the award. It is the highest federal recognition a college or university
can achieve for its commitment to service learning and civic engagement.
SUNY Delhi was among a select group of colleges and universities across
the U.S. that were chosen based on several factors, including scope and
innovativeness of service projects, percentage of student participation
in service activities, incentives for service, and the extent to which the
school offers academic service-learning courses.
“There is a strong community service tradition at SUNY Delhi and
we're very pleased to be a recognized leader in community service,"
says Elizabeth Sova, O’Connor Center Coordinator.
College Council
Chair Appointed
Nancy K. Deming has been appointed by
Governor Andrew M. Cuomo as chair of the
SUNY Delhi College Council.
Deming is a matrimonial and family law
litigator with over 30 years of experience.
She began practicing in New York City
in 1980 and then became a partner of
Newhouse & Deming in 1985. Deming
brought her practice to Delhi in 1992, joining
the Delaware County Bar Association.
A member for over 20 years, she served
as president from 2007-2009. Deming is
also a member of the New York State Bar
Association, specifically in Family Law. She
holds a bachelor’s degree from New York
University and was admitted to practice law
after serving a clerkship with a small Wall
Street law firm. Deming previously served as
a member and president of the Delhi Central
School District Board of Education.
Morales Honored
Nearly 75 friends, faculty, staff and
alumni attended a Rochester reception in
November honoring Dominic Morales’
37 years of service to SUNY Delhi and
the turfgrass industry. The event, cosponsored
by the Alumni Association and
the New York State Turfgrass Association,
sparked contributions totaling more
than $25,000 for a new scholarship
endowment in the Morales family name.
The scholarship will support students
majoring in Turf Management, Golf
Course Operations, Landscape Design
and Management and Golf Course
Management beginning this fall.
Child Care Center
Earns National
Accreditation
The Delhi Campus Child Care Center (DC-4)
has earned a five-year renewal of its accreditation
from the National Association for the Education
of Young Children (NAEYC).
DC-4 conducted an extensive self-study process
that measured its services against the 10 NAEYC
early childhood program standards and more than
400 related accreditation criteria. It also completed
an on-site visit by NAEYC last fall.
“Only eight percent of all preschools and other
early childhood programs are accredited by the NAEYC, so this makes our renewal
very rewarding,” says Karen Wallace, DC-4 Director. “Our staff worked hard to
ensure we met the requirements for renewal at our new location.”
DC-4 unveiled a newly-constructed building on the Valley Campus in a ribbon
cutting event on October 23. The event celebrated $6.5 million in state support
secured by Senator John Bonacic. Also at the event, the Center celebrated a new
partnership, the Carousel Children’s Program, with The Arc of Delaware County.
Delhi Construction Among Top
in Northeast Region
SUNY Delhi earned second place in the 23rd Annual Associated Schools of
Construction (ASC) regional student design-build competition in Morristown,
NJ, November 9-10.
Students were given 15 hours to draft a written bid proposal for a project by
the sponsoring firm, Gilbane Building Company. They designed, estimated,
scheduled and developed site logistics plans, company profiles, policies, staffing
plans and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) score sheets.
Students were then required to produce a 35 minute PowerPoint presentation
by the next morning to “win the job.” While drafting the proposal, students
were not permitted to use the Internet and were not able to consult with faculty.
Representatives from Gilbane served as judges for the competition.
“In my opinion, design-build is the most rigorous category of the three presented
at the ASC competition,” says Jared Yando ’07, Construction Technology and
Management Instructor. “The judges said the ranking was extremely close in the
design-build category with Roger Williams edging us by just a few points. The
judges commended our students on their professionalism and team camaraderie.”
Other competing teams included: Roger Williams University, Rochester Institute
of Technology, Norwich University, Central Connecticut State University,
Polytechnic Institute of New York University, and Pennsylvania College of
Technology.
Delhi celebrated the completion of its new
Delhi Child Care Center (DC-4) with a ribbon
cutting ceremony that also marked the
Center’s reaccreditation and its partnership
with The Arc of Delaware County.
Alumni Advisory Council Looks to the Next 100
SUNY Delhi’s Alumni Advisory Council has been re-energized with new members and a
renewed focus on its mission—to represent SUNY Delhi’s 35,000 alumni in a vital association
that partners with the college to build a bright and solid future.
The Council hopes to achieve this mission by:
• Stimulating interest and support in alumni and college activities
• Serving as ambassadors for the college by encouraging student enrollment and career placement
• Supporting fundraising
• Making recommendations that further its mission
The Alumni Advisory Council is proud to report on last year’s achievements, which include:
• Developing a new “Chart of Works,” which established Executive, Nominating and Working
Committees for events and fundraising development
• Hosting three fall events: The Capital Region Reception, co-hosted by Maria Jones ’99; a
Rochester reception in honor of Dean Dominic Morales, co-hosted by the New York State
Turfgrass Association; and “SUNY Delhi Centennial Salute to Veterans,” co-hosted by SUNY
Delhi Veterans Services, the NYS Division of Veteran’s Affairs and the Delhi American Legion
• Planning the SUNY Delhi Centennial Alumni Celebration: Not Your Average Alumni Weekend,
to students on behalf of the Alumni Association
• Awarding $10,000 in scholarships for the academic year to 10 freshmen in various majors who
have financial need
• Establishing the Alumni Centennial Scholarships to provide an additional $10,000 for upper
classmen; awards will be made annually to four students seeking a bachelor’s degree in any
major, three second-year Liberal Arts and Sciences majors, two Honors Program students of
any major, and one exemplary student employee
• Sponsoring a direct mail campaign to 10,000 alumni seeking support for The Delhi Fund and
student scholarships
• Beginning an overhaul of the alumni website to offer an alumni directory, enhanced social
network connectivity, more giving options and online registration for events. Watch the
progress at www.delhi.edu/alumni
• Welcoming five new members; the Council now represents the class years of 1962-2014 and
