Editorial
Dear Readers,
What contribution can the TridonicAtco
group make in terms of ecologically sound
and sustainable development?
Our product portfolio plays an important
role here. Digital dimmable ballasts, lighting
management systems and light emitting
diodes are obviously all helping to create
energy-efficient solutions. Depending on
the particular application, energy savings of
up to 80 % can be made compared with
conventional technologies. Another important
aspect is to minimise the environment impact
caused by logistics.
TridonicAtco is the only high-volume manufacturer
of electronic lighting components
with production facilities primarily in Europe.
In addition to factories in Dornbirn (Austria),
Ennenda (Switzerland), Spennymoor (Great
Britain) and Jennersdorf (Austria), which primarily
serve the European regions and neighbouring
markets, our facilities in Shenzhen (China) have
been upgraded and expanded. As a global
partner, TridonicAtco can therefore offer local
customers a high level of service. As there is
often little planning security associated with
lighting projects and therefore rapid reactions
and prompt shipments in response to
changing market demands are required,
our local presence not only brings ecological
benefits but also ensures that our products
are available within a very short time.
The factors mentioned above have helped
us record positive growth. In the fiscal year
to the end of April 2007, TridonicAtco posted
sales a double-figure percentage increase
to almost 380 million euros.
This trend has continued in the first quarter
of the new fiscal year.
The whole spectrum of light.
From ballasts to lighting
management solutions.
www.tridonicatco.com
The range of products from TridonicAtco
is as broad as the bandwidth of light. In
close cooperation with our customers
we develop innovative product solutions
throughout the world. But all our various
products have some things in common
– their exceptional quality, their outstanding
reliability and the fact that they are
ahead of their time.

Technology
Brilliance in ballasts
The processor – a world first in ECG – is the latest in the line of intelligent ballasts, following the
successful ASIC generations. This technology from TridonicAtco merges the experience and the development
know-how of almost two decades with dimmable and non-dimmable ballasts. Extensive user benefits and
sophisticated functionality are therefore guaranteed well into the future.
combines experience with lighting intelligence
Technology for the future
With its new “ ” processor technology TridonicAtco is once again
setting standards in the use of digital control technology, which caused
such a stir when it was first integrated in a ballast. The intelligence
of TridonicAtco’s ballasts has always been concentrated in applicationspecific
integrated circuits (ASIC). These are TridonicAtco’s own
developments that are used exclusively in TridonicAtco devices. There
have now been five generations of ASIC, more than 200 inventions
and over 900 patents as ample evidence of TridonicAtco’s expertise
in digital control.
technology merges the experience and the development knowhow
of almost two decades with dimmable and non-dimmable ballasts.
A high level of integration and a wealth of further innovative functions
for perfect lamp and lighting management are the impressive results.
There is the double bonus of pioneering intelligent ballasts with high
levels of functionality and TridonicAtco’s technology leadership.
High performance throughout their lives
As a further development of the successful ASIC, the processor
with its high level of digital processing ensures unrestricted reproducibility
of all the defined parameters. It therefore guarantees excellent reliability
of all intelligent ballasts throughout their lives. Selected function blocks
from this intelligent processor are also implemented in other
versions, resulting in devices with the precise innovative properties
required for particular applications. TridonicAtco therefore presents a
high-class product portfolio for operating a wide range of light sources.
At the heart of the are new functions and tried and tested functions
from the previous ASIC generations, creating the ideal platform for
perfect lamp and lighting management. The “SMART heating concept”
for example disconnects electrode preheating for fluorescent lamps to
ensure they operate in accordance with specifications and at the same
time with optimum energy efficiency and constant luminous flux. Preventive
monitoring features such as Intelligent Temperature Guard (ITG) und
Intelligent Voltage Guard (IVG), which checks the voltage at the ballast
and prevents damage to protect installers and users, help ensure that the
ballasts – and therefore the luminaires and lighting systems – continue to
operate correctly.
“Energy efficiency” is more than just a buzz phrase
Intelligent lighting systems are characterised by energy efficiency and
contribute to sustainability. technology provides an excellent basis
here, not only because of its many integrated functions such as
the optimised “SMART heating concept” but also because it interacts
perfectly with external control components.
A good example here is the successful corridorFUNCTION provided
by the digital dimmable PCA EXCEL one4all and PCA T5 ECO lp ballasts
which combine motion-sensor-controlled energy efficiency and safety.
The special feature here is that the ballast itself takes over the function
of the controller so there is no need for further control components.
Such a lighting solution is not only extremely cost-effective but also
saves a considerable amount of energy in applications where the
lighting has to be on permanently, such as multi-storey car parks
and walkways in buildings.
Energy efficiency is further boosted by lower power loss thanks to
improved thermal management, for example in the versions
of the PC PRO ballasts. This positive effect comes from using the
technology.
High-class lighting management
TridonicAtco has always focused on application-specific benefits
in developing is ASIC. And this of course also applies to the new
processor, which goes beyond the DALI protocol by providing
additional functionality for intelligent lighting management. Instead
of just the 161 standard commands, DALI units with technology
from TridonicAtco provide around 30 % more application-specific DALI
commands. The protocol structure has been extended to 3 bytes,
enabling outstanding attributes to be provided such as applicationspecific
programming, comprehensive fault reporting and multi-lamp
operation of T5 fluorescent lamps of the same length.
The future is already here
Like previous ASIC generations, which saw a 100-fold increase in
the number of components from the first to the fifth generation and
a 30-fold increase in the number of functions, the processor can
respond quickly to market requirements. This is absolutely essential
to success. As it has done many times before with intelligent ballasts,
TridonicAtco once again has created USPs with outstanding user
benefits.
PC PRO T8
for brilliant system efficiency
The successful PC PRO T8 ballasts with new “ ” technology from TridonicAtco now have
improved properties. Users get added value from system efficiency and lamp management
that are better than ever before.
Always room for improvement
Superb lamp management has always been a characteristic feature
PC PRO T8 electronic ballasts. The tried and tested ASIC guarantee
high levels of lighting comfort and quality. But there is nothing in this
world that cannot be improved so TridonicAtco is once again setting
a milestone in the use of digital control with the introduction of “ ”
technology.
A high level of integration and a wealth of further innovative functions
are the impressive results – and with above-average system efficiency.
The PC PRO T8 ballasts – in their one and two-lamp versions –
operate T8 fluorescent lamps with wattages from 18 W to 58 W not
only in accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications but with
innovative added value.
Minimal power loss
Als Now more than ever before energy efficiency is the crucial factor
for many applications. This aspect has been improved in the
PC PRO T8 ballasts as a result of reducing the power loss through
improved thermal management. This positive effect comes directly
from the use of technology. Less heat is produced and therefore
the thermal load on the ECG is lower, which increases the reliability
of the device.
The new PC PRO T8 generation has a greater thermal safety margin
(up to 135 %) with respect to the limit temperature at the smoothing
capacitor. As the operating temperature effectively determines the life
of the device a reduction in the constant load of 10 K at the capacitor
translates into a doubling of life – just a reduction of 1 K leads to
a considerable improvement in reliability.
Added value guaranteed
PC PRO T8
ballasts are designed for universal application.
A lifetime of 50,000 hours at an ambient temperature of up to +60 °C
brings long-term benefits.
Plus points all round
Existing PC PRO T8 ballasts can be easily replaced with innovative
generation ballasts because the casing dimensions, attachment
points and connection positions on both the power supply side and
the lamp side are identical.
damage due to overvoltage or undervoltage.
Economy counts
Instead of being on permanently, luminaires
operated with innovative PC PRO T8
ballasts can be switched on as and when
required by means of presence sensors
or ambient light sensors. This significantly
reduces the energy consumption of the
lighting system and makes the entire system
more economical. Long device and lamp life
also contribute to this improved economy,
and because of exemplary gentle hot restarts
even frequent on/off switching has no adverse
effect.
Dynamic colours for
outdoor lighting
A friendly atmosphere by day and a colourful cube at night. That’s the Gravis flagship store in Berlin.
Innovative control components from TridonicAtco provide a simple solution for an unusual lighting concept.
Complete concept
Gravis, a leading retail chain on the German Apple market with 29 outlets,
is undergoing the greatest change of image in its 20 year history. From its
origins as small-scale technology-oriented computer shops, the company
presents itself as a digital lifestyle supplier with a wide range of iPods,
Apples, iLife software and more. The contemporary displays are the
work of designer Erik Spiekermann and his team SpiekermannPartners.
They were first introduced in 2006 in Hamburg and are now making
an appearance in the Berlin flagship store. The digital lifestyle is not
just sold here – it is lived here.
Since January 2007, the company has been
selling not only hardware but also solutions
at its prestigious two-storey building at
Ernst-Reuter-Platz in Berlin. The building has
a total floor space of 1,500 m 2 . The first floor
accommodates various lounge rooms and a
café, which adds to the relaxed atmosphere
that is expected from a company that sells
digital lifestyle products.
Light as a design element
According to Wolf Lindau, Managing Director
of the Berlin based Expo Norm Lindau KG,
the company responsible for the interior design,
this relaxed atmosphere is enhanced by the
light grey furniture and the complementary
lighting. By day, a large amount of natural light
enters through the generously dimensioned
windows, to which an appropriate amount
of glare-free artificial light is added to create
a bright friendly atmosphere. This artificial light
is provided by 19 ceiling units on both floors,
with just a few halogen spotlights mounted
on power rails close to the product displays.
Located behind the stretch ceilings are fluorescent
lamps in daylight white and also in red,
green and blue. These lamps combine well with
the white walls and light grey carpets to conjure
up a fee-good atmosphere. They also provide
the basis for mood lighting through RGB colour
mixing – an option that is used outside normal
opening hours and also for special events.
From 10 o’clock at night to 2 o’clock in the
morning, the building, which is set back from
the road by about 20 meters, stands out
from other buildings thanks to dynamic colour
change lighting. To ensure that these colour
changes are seen by drivers as they speed
past, the colours have to change very rapidly.
The blinds which are overprinted with images
from the world of computing and which protect
the store from the full glare of the sun along its
broad frontage are backlit with vibrant colours.
The resulting outward effect ensures that the
Gravis flagship store attracts a lot of attention.
Ceiling units create a feel-good atmosphere in the Gravis flagship store
For events such as concerts and presentations, Attached to the frame are luminaires with freeburning
T8 fluorescent lamps. In front of them
however, the entire space is bathed in a single
colour. The intensity of this colour changes is a translucent “04011 Blanc Venus” stretch
with slow fade times, at more or less the same ceiling from Barrisol which has been manufactured
to the required dimensions at the factory
frequency as someone breathing in and out.
The inspiration for this scenario is a small LED and installed with all-round beading in fixed
on the Apple Powerbook that flashes slowly rails. This ensures that the lighting for the room
when the computer is idle.
is both uniform and pleasant.
“Dynamic colours for outdoor lighting”, continued
Installed in the ceiling units behind the stretch film are digital dimmable PCA ECO ballasts
for perfect control of the coloured and white fluorescent lamps
Scenes have been programmed in which
the artificial lighting is dimmed according to
the amount of natural light coming in through
the 210 m 2 windows, taking full advantage
of considerable potential energy savings.
The attractive and intuitive x-touchPANEL operating
and control unit from TridonicAtco makes
configuring the lighting moods no problem at
all. Theory and practice come together neatly
here, with installation and setup simplicity itself.
Lighting sequences and colour changes can
be set up very quickly with the x-touchPANEL.
Up to 128 DALI addresses can be controlled
and 16 lighting groups can be assigned. In
addition, 16 lighting scenes can be programmed
and recalled. The two software versions
stored in the x-touchPANEL guarantee versatile
lighting management. One option is a program
focuses on mood lighting with white light and
scene selections. The option selected for the
Gravis flagship store is the one that is designed
specifically for time-controlled colour changes
and colour sequencing via RGB colour mixing.
The special feature is the ease with which
colours can be selected. The shade is chosen
by touch from a palette of colours and the
x-touchPANEL then automatically calculates
the light levels for the individual coloured light
sources.
The integrated DALI sequencer enables lighting
moods (scenes) to be called up one after
the other automatically. Up to 99 independent
lighting sequences can be stored, each capable
of calling up to 16 lighting scenes any number
of times. This means that the atmosphere in
the room can be constantly changing.
In addition to manual selection of lighting
scenes and dimming, a total of seven
“schedules” can be defined. These are
calendar-controlled sequences.
Intuition triumphs
With its impressive lighting system the Gravis
store is a real eye-catcher, both inside with
its bright and inviting atmosphere, and outside
where at night-time dynamic coloured lighting
is used to make it a focal point of local interest.
The power behind this lighting system is
TridonicAtco’s expertise in innovative control
concepts with its digital dimmable PCA ECO
ballasts and DALI/DSI converters. The impressive
appearance that the store presents to
the world is thanks in no small measure to the
x-touchPANEL with its intuitive control concept
that enables new lighting ideas to created with
no problem at all.
TALEXXengine for optimum user benefits
Light emitting diodes are revolutionising lighting systems.
TridonicAtco combines extensive LED expertise and
control gear know-how under the name of TALEXX.
Products such as TALEXXengine are setting new
standards in user-friendly LED applications.
More than just LED
A significant brand
The last ten years have seen a breath-taking expansion in the use
of LED for illumination purposes. The activities of TridonicAtco in
all aspects of semiconductor light have been just as spectacular. The
company therefore presents itself as something more than just a supplier
of components such as LED modules, converters, controllers and
accessories. As evidenced by various successful projects, TridonicAtco
is also focusing on solving specific lighting tasks in which functionality is
the top priority. This pioneering approach, based on permanent growth
– both technological and economic – is supported by a new brand. The
many technological highlights in the LED sector will in future be combined
under the name of TALEXX at TridonicAtco. TALEXX therefore stands for
excellent LED know-how, innovative LED products and high-quality LED
systems. For users, this means sophisticated solutions with impressive
added value according to the motto “More than just LED”.
TALEXXengine for simplicity
The TALEXXengine is one such solution. Users, for example furniture
designers or luminaire manufacturers, receive a standard product in
which all the challenges facing LED are solved and which they simply
have to incorporate in their piece of furniture or luminaire and connect
up. The modular versions of the TALEXXengine are optimised for
functionality and are suitable for all applications in which light emitting
diodes bring major benefits because of their specific properties.
These include chillers for the food industry because LED are particularly
“comfortable” even at low temperatures, and display cabinets in which
the exhibits benefit from the lack of UV and IR radiation in the LED light.
Other interesting areas of application include furniture lighting, shop
lighting and luminaires for general illumination.
Thanks its good thermal management, a TALEXXengine has adequate
cooling and can be installed without any further thermal protection
measures as required in the case of low-voltage halogen lamps. This
excellent product is also ideal for applications where high quality of white
light and defined light colours are required.
Light optimised for efficiency
With the TALEXXengine, TridonicAtco’s main aim is to develop standard
products that offer the best possible properties in terms of merchandise
lighting, system efficiency and sustainability. System efficiency in this
context means that the light produced is used to the best advantage, in
other words precisely focused on the items to be displayed or the area to
be illuminated. The basic principle is to use as little light as possible and
as much light as necessary to achieve the desired effect. This results in
sustainable solutions that reduce energy and maintenance costs to
a minimum and therefore safeguard precious natural resources.
The TALEXXengine therefore contains the LED light source, optics or
lenses, heat sinks, fastenings and wiring. Together with the converter the
result is a solution with perfectly matched components and impressive
user benefits.
Simple handling guaranteed
TridonicAtco intends opening up new markets with such products that
have a much higher depth of integration than usual to make life much
easier for the user. The TALEXXengine concept is characterised by
extraordinary flexibility. This applies to the length, amount and distribution
of light, colour temperature (light colour), supply voltage and fastening
system.
The advantages over conventional solutions in which users have
to shape their own ideas into a coherent concept relate primarily to
TridonicAtco’s know-how in LED combined with its expertise in LED
control. A TALEXXengine combines slim design, flexible lengths,
task-specific LED light sources, system efficiency through directed light,
low energy consumption and cost savings. The TALEXXengine also
provides an excellent platform for producing customer-specific lighting
products.
Project
Conveying the right image
Light emitting diodes are proving to be the ideal choice for retail outlets. In the flagship store of Apivita,
LED modules can be found not only on the shelving but also behind a light diffuser ceiling.
TALEXXstrip P521-2 and
TALEXX EOS P212 for impressive
versatility
300 products are presented over three floors. The attractive packaging
in vibrant colours reflects the brand image. The three products lines are
beautifully displayed by a sophisticated lighting system that is also kind
to the sensitive ingredients.
Portraying the image
Dimitris Naskias from the Athens office of DIAUC was tasked with
planning the lighting system. The renowned Greek planning office sees
light as an art and has therefore focused on aesthetic lighting solutions
that have outstanding cost/performance ratios, meet user needs and also
take account of ergonomic aspects. Their work is based on extensive
know-how in all areas of lighting technology. This covers conventional
lamps, light emitting diodes and fibre optics, RGB colour mixing and
Natural beauty
High-quality natural products are increasing in popularity in the cosmetic
and wellness sector. The success of the Apivita brand is excellent
evidence of this trend. This Greek company was founded in 1979 and
specializes in health products for the face, body and hair, paying enormous
respect to the traditions of Greek aromatherapy, with only natural
lighting management. DIAUC is an expanding company involved in
a large number of projects including offices, shops, restaurants, bars,
cafes and domestic premises. For these projects it has long relied on
the expertise of TridonicAtco for ballasts, lighting control components
and LED modules, and was able to convince Apivita of the benefits
of these innovative products.
Mediterranean ingredients being used. The soaps and shampoos are
based largely on bee products such as honey, pollen, Royal Jelly and
propolis. Natural oils and extracts from plants, fruit and vegetables are
also used. These high-quality natural products are sold mainly through
more than 4,000 drugstores in Greece. Apivita is now the market leader
in Greece and is expanding its activities worldwide. Its product lines
will be offered in selected stores and spa centres in 16 countries.
DIAUC listens closely to what the customer wants, so its lighting
concept for this prestigious store reflects Apivita’s corporate philosophy.
The general lighting provides soft, calm, relaxing light in warm colours,
while the products are highlighted on the shelves in daylight white by
TALEXXstrip P521-2 LED modules. The specific properties of the LED
are of great benefit here. Their light for example does not contain any
ultraviolet or infrared radiation, and because they produce very little heat
This success has given rise to some new ideas for marketing the
products. To convey the philosophy of the company and the benefits
of its products more effectively, Apivita opened its first flagship store
in 2006 in Kolonaki, a district of Athens near the city centre.
the modules can be attached directly to wood. The compact dimensions
of the LED also played an important role here as the strips could remain
unobtrusive. These are controlled by electronic TALEXXconverter K211
or TALEXXcontrol C004 PWM amplifiers from TridonicAtco.
The Apivita flagship store in the centre of Athens is a fascinating showcase for lighting design
Dramatic lighting
The top floor of Apivita’s flagship store called for a special solution
because of its low ceiling. A Barrisol stretch ceiling is used here to
provide uniform and pleasant lighting. The ceiling is backlit by
TALEXX EOS P212 daylight white LED modules, each comprising
five TALEXXchain 511 units, instead of fluorescent lamps to achieve
the necessary uniformity despite the shallow mounting depth.
The overall effect is helped by the wide 140° beam angle of the
light emitting diodes.
Fingertip control
The easy-to-use x-touchBOX from TridonicAtco has been installed
for lighting management and for selecting different lighting scenes. The
ballasts can be individually controlled, faded and monitored. However,
the installation is programmed to run through all the scenes automatically
so there is no need for anyone to worry about controlling it. The light
is switched on and off automatically to coincide with opening hours.
What’s more, the window display lighting offers a different dynamic
atmosphere on a Saturday evening from that on a Sunday evening.
Accent lighting is provided by hand-made spotlights on the ceiling.
These spotlights are equipped with low-voltage halogen lamps and
electronic TE one4all transformers from TridonicAtco. In the shop
window the natural products are highlighted by RGB lighting from
T8 fluorescent lamps in red, green and blue operated with digital
dimmable PCA EXCEL one4all ballasts. The two additional floodlights
are controlled via DALI 3-RM-C modules.
Positive feedback
The Apivita flagship store in Athens has been impressing customers
with this successful lighting system for a year now. In view of the positive
feedback the concept of exclusive lighting moods will be extended to the
other Apivita stores. Natural beauty will then shine out in many different
places thanks to innovative TALEXX components from TridonicAtco.
all operated in accordance with the manufacturers’
specifications.
Tailor-made light
The French fashion chain LC Waikiki wows its customers not only with
its exclusive clothing but also with unusual and aesthetically pleasing
store concepts. All the 100 or so stores in France and throughout
the world have lighting systems that are highly effective at displaying
the merchandise in the best possible light.
And the recently opened outlet in the Cevahir shopping centre in Istanbul
is no exception. The lighting concept was designed and implemented
here by Lamp83 Aydinlatma San.ve TIC.A.S from Kagithane together
TridonicAtco ballasts guarantee
high quality of light
with the local architects Zirve Mimarlik, as in the other Turkish branches
of LC Waikiki. Lamp83 is one of the leading Turkish luminaire manufacturers,
specialising in designer product lines. The lighting solution
itself is in keeping with the shop design that has proved so support
Product
Small but with great responsibility
SLK 3, the modified luminaire terminal strip from TridonicAtco connection technology, offers added value
with its sophisticated plug technology. Now flexible conductors can be used, and not just rigid ones – and
all without any additional outlay.
For reasons of convenience, the plug-in option rather than the screw
option is preferred for luminaire terminal strips, but restricted to rigid
conductors or to flexible conductors with ready-made cable ends
(soldered for example or with end sleeves).
Luminaire terminal strip SLK 3
for flexible conductors
As the interface between the luminaire and the electrician, these
inconspicuous low-cost components bear great responsibility. The
terminals have to enable the conductors to be easily connected
and released and ensure reliable mechanical functionality with low
and stable contact resistance.
The SLK 3 luminaire terminal strip from TridonicAtco connection
technology can now do more than this. On the installation side, flexible
conductors with cross-sections of 1.5 mm 2 and 2.5 mm 2 can be used
without first being prepared. The quality of the connection has been
verified in extensive tests in which not only the integrity grip is checked
but also the long-term electrical function of the contact element.
This has been confirmed by the approval of the SLK 3 terminals
by the VDE Testing and Certification Institute.
The SLK 3 luminaire terminal strip is also a good problem solver. In
many cases the end sleeves enlarged the cross-section of flexible
2.5 mm 2 cables so much that they could not be inserted in the terminals.
If the SLK 3 terminal is used there is no need for such preparation and
therefore no risk of enlargement.
The SLK 3 luminaire terminal strip and the connection expertise of
TridonicAtco connection technology are in great demand wherever
“flexibility” is required – in mobile luminaires with connecting cables
and plugs and for wiring downlights in suspended ceilings.
Technical data
• Rated voltage 450 V
• Rated current 24 A
• Maximum ambient temperature 110 °C
• ENEC and VDE tested
• Conductor can be detached on the installation side with a pusher
from TridonicAtco are a major part of the drive
to save energy.
LED modules for sustainability
Energy-efficient lighting solutions
Options for reducing CO 2
emissions are coming under intense scrutiny
as a way of helping make the world a healthy place for future generations.
Energy-efficient lighting solutions are one way of tapping into a relatively
large energy-saving potential because lighting accounts for around 20 %
of all the electricity consumed throughout the world. TridonicAtco has had
great increasing success here, among other things with its TALEXX
modules. In just the “signage” segment, these innovative products have
saved the CO 2
equivalent of 15,000 round trips between Frankfurt and
New York in the last five years.
LED module have been established in signage elements for some time
now because they offer many advantages over the available alternatives,
namely neon installations and backlighting systems based on fluorescent
lamps. TALEXX modules with Chip-on-Board (COB) technology from
TridonicAtco are the perfect choice, starting with ease of assembly and
installation. High luminous efficacy, excellent colour saturation and small
mounting depth combine to guarantee uniform illumination of logos and
lettering. Brand image and corporate image are impressively presented.

Outstanding lifetime and system efficiency
The long life and robustness of LED modules reduce maintenance
costs and their system efficiency reduces power consumption.
This not only reduces the operating costs of signage elements over
the entire life of the installation but also offers clear added value in
the protection of valuable natural resources. For the same amount
of white light for example, TALEXX modules need only one quarter
of the power of neon installations, and only around one sixth for
red light. The potential energy savings are considerable.
If we consider the 1,200 km of TALEXXchain modules with a combined
connected load of around 5 MW that TridonicAtco has produced for
the signage sector in the last five years, the positive effect of this energyefficient
lighting solution is enormous. In this time, for an average operating
time of ten hours a day almost 46,000 MWh of energy will have been
consumed. Equivalent neon installations with a connected load of at least
20 MW would have consumed a massive 182,500 MWh. The difference
corresponds to a reduction in CO 2
emissions of almost 60,000 tonnes.
This is equivalent to the CO 2
emissions of 15,000 flights from Frankfurt
to New York and back. Innovative technologies such as TALEXX from
TridonicAtco therefore have a global impact.
For the benefit of the environment
At present, TridonicAtco produces 15 km
of high-power TALEXXchains each week
with 400,000 LED for the signage
segment. Compared with neon systems,
these new installations save an additional
18 MWh of energy and therefore offer further
potential savings of 8 tonnes of CO 2
emissions. Together with the TALEXX
modules in signage elements already
in operation, the weekly reduction in
Basic values for the calculations
• 0.43 kg CO 2
Energy consumption of signage elements with TALEXX
modules compared with equivalent neon systems
• Other colours 1:4
Operating time of the signage elements 10 hours / day
CO 2
is 500 tonnes – a truly impressive
amount.
The continuing trend towards LED solutions
in signage applications means that energy
savings will continue to grow. TridonicAtco’s
expertise in LED systems is having
a positive impact, not only in the quality
of lighting but also in energy efficiency
and the protection of natural resources.
Sustainability is the key here – for the benefit
of the environment.
EC and OMBIS ballasts
for outdoor applications
Responsibility
Providing new modern office space while retaining a city’s historic
appearance is always a major challenge. The Arconati1 building in
Milan and the Mondrian building in Brussels are two examples of where
this challenge has been successfully met as they both enhance their
city center surroundings.
The complex now offers 13,000 m 2 of floor space with high levels
of efficiency and flexibility, providing the basis for open-plan offices,
individual offices and conference rooms.
These buildings stand out during the day for their eye-catching
architecture, and then again at night thanks to sympathetic lighting.
The lighting has to withstand everything that the weather can
throw at it, and the robustness and the high-quality engineering
of TridonicAtco ballasts play an important role here.
Pretty city
The quarter near the former railway station of “Porta Vittoria” in Milan
has undergone a major refurbishment scheme. One of the projects in
this scheme was the modern Arconati1 office complex in which a square
seven-storey building and a rectangular four-storey building are joined
by a new glazed section.
The special feature of this project is that the original structure of
the two buildings from the 1960s was retained with their interplay
of open and closed surfaces. To create office space that met present
day requirements the interior was completely gutted.
The project architects, Progetto CMR, have created a contemporary
Mediterranean look with “transparency” towards the city and interplay
between natural and artificial light. The “full surfaces” of the vented
façade consist of terracotta elements; the same material is used in
the shading systems. The glass link with its small courtyard provides
a dynamic, semi-private atmosphere and offers a passageway for
the public to the parallel Via Arconati.
Both sections of the Arconati1 building are framed by a metal structure,
like an arbour. Its composition supplements the overall structure and
creates a space for meeting and greeting, with the relationship between
the interior and exterior space enhanced by a large terrace that offers
an impressive panorama of the city. Attached to this metal structure at
the top and at the individual floor levels there are Mintechno spotlights
from Simes with a beam angle of 8° and elliptical lens and spots with a
beam angle of 22° and wide-dispersion lens to create variable accent
lighting. Techno rectangular floodlights with wide-beam and spotlight
characteristics located at the top end of the terracotta elements
supplement the components for harmonious and stylish presentation
of Arconati1. All the IP 65 luminaires in the Techno family from the Italian
manufacturer Simes SPA of Corte Franca near Brescia are equipped
with 35 W or 150 W metal halide lamps operated as per specification
with ballasts in the OM series with the new ZRM ES/C series of ignitors
from TridonicAtco.
These are complemented by dots of light from Sparks recessed floor
luminaires. This lighting concept makes the Arconati1 complex shine
out at night like a monument.
The building is developed around a glass atrium and a courtyard that
links to the public area of Brussels via a generous flight of steps.
The building attracts attention not just during the day. The outside of the
building is also brought to life at night. The courtyard is given structure
by shafts of light from Linear recessed floor lights from Simes equipped
with EC ballasts from TridonicAtco. Walk-on Megazip Square recessed
floor lights illuminate the walls from below. Their 70 W metal halide lamps
are operated as per specification by OMBIS 70 ballasts together with
ZRM 4.5-ES/C ignitors from TridonicAtco. Megazip Plus Square downlights
from Simes provide accent lighting from the building overhangs.
These downlights are also operated with magnetic ballasts from
TridonicAtco.
The prestigious office building in the centre of the Quartier Léopold acts
as a highlight for its surroundings. The complex is being used by the
European Commission for its research and development section, giving
the section a strong identity. This has been recognised by the MIPIM
Award 2005 for the “Mondrian” complex in the “Business Center”
Well placed
category, an annual award for the best international properties.
Not far from Toison d’Or, one of the most prestigious business
addresses in Brussels, the “Mondrian” building offers around 20,000 m 2
of office, archiving and service space extending over two linked buildings.
The eight-storey complex was designed by the architects Assar and is
named after the Dutch painter Piet Mondrian, one of the most influential
artists of the 20 th century and a founding father of abstract painting.
The Mondrian complex includes a garage with 189 parking spaces and
was completed in cooperation with the Belgian developer Allfin. The
architecture is characterised by the harmonious combination of timeless
classicism and elegance with the transparency of contemporary design.
A playground for light
More and more attention is being paid to the outward lighting effect of
buildings. The conditions here are more changeable and much more
demanding than conditions inside the building. This is why ballasts
from TridonicAtco are used. Not only are they robust and reliable, they
have the technical qualities to ensure that the lamps are operated in
accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications. EC ballasts are
perfect for fluorescent lamps, while OMBIS ballasts with ZRM ignitors
are the ideal choice for metal halide lamps.
The natural stone facade was sensitively combined with the retained
facade from the 1920s and supplemented with a large amount of glass.
Technology
LED safety redefined
Personal safety in the use of technical products has always been the prime consideration in drawing up standards.
This also applies to all the directives that govern the safe use of light sources. Because of their specific properties
all lamps and light emitting diodes have the potential for damaging the eyes or skin for example. The factors here
include the wavelength (i.e. infra-red or ultra-violet radiation), the intensity, the dose (i.e. intensity over time) and
the size of the light source or its projected size.
Despite having the same parameters, the
photo-biological safety of lamps and lamp
systems on the one hand and light emitting
diodes on the other are tested on the basis
of different standards. Because of their discrete
spectrum and their original applications, for
example as signal lamps, LED were subject
to international standard IEC 60825-1 and
European standard EN 60825-1 “Safety of
laser products – Part 1: Equipment classification,
requirements and user‘s guide”. With
the increasing importance of LED for general
lighting applications the safety aspects were
increasingly difficult to assess on the basis
of IEC 60825-1.
LED lighting is the focus of the IEC 62471 standard
The realisation that the photobiological safety
of LED and that of all other lamps should
ideally be brought under a common standard
relating to lamp safety has resulted in the new
international standard IEC 62471:2006 and
European draft standard prEN 62471:2006
“Photobiological safety of lamps and lamp
systems” that has been in force since July
2006. The requirements of this standard takes
greater account of the use of LED light sources
for illumination purposes.
IEC 62471 defines the types of danger and
the permissible radiation doses for each type
of danger. It also describes the specific
measurement methods and conditions for
assessing the lamps for their photobiological
risks.
It concludes with an overview and the criteria
for classifying the lamps in terms of their risks.
The four groups are the “Exempt Group”, in
which there is no risk according to IEC 62471,
and risk groups 1, 2 and 3 with low, medium
and high risks respectively.
In future, TridonicAtco will measure and classify
its LED products and systems under the
TALEXX brand in accordance with IEC 62471.
These certified TALEXX components will enable
innovative and compliant LED luminaires to
be developed in the future. TridonicAtco’s outstanding
LED know-how is therefore of great
benefit to all users.
Application
Destined for the clean room
PC INDUSTRY electronic ballasts offer perfect support in a wide range of applications.
Long life and high reliability are the key features.
The long life of PC INDUSTRY is the crucial factor
Specialists in extraordinary requirements
Ballasts with extremely long lives, such as those in the PC INDUSTRY
family from TridonicAtco, demonstrate their outstanding capabilities not
only in harsh industrial environments. Designed to operate 36 W and
58 W T8 fluorescent lamps and 49 W, 54 W and 80 W T5 lamps, these
extremely reliable electronic ballasts are ideal wherever above-average
requirements for a clean atmosphere are specified. Good examples
include hospitals, laboratories, and the chemical, micro-technology
and food industries.
For such special applications the Norwegian luminaire manufacturer
Glamox ASA has developed luminaires with clean-room technology that
are easy to clean and maintain, including lamp and ECG replacement.
However each maintenance operation means jeopardising the clean
room atmosphere, so the PC INDUSTRY ballast with its life of up to
200,000 hours at an ambient temperature of +50 °C offers considerable
benefits because the maintenance intervals can be extended. They also
compensate for the high thermal demands that result from being located
in enclosed luminaire systems protected against dust and moisture.
Of crucial importance here is not just the comfortable light so that even
highly detailed work can be performed without any problems but also
hygiene. The slightest contamination can have disastrous consequences
in the overpressure clean rooms, as required for example for solar cell
manufacture by REC ScanCell. The luminaires used therefore have
to comply with strict specifications.
Responsibility
Glamox makes good use of the properties of the PC INDUSTRY ballast
in its C60-R clean room luminaire with protection IP 65 which has been
designed specifically for use in sterile rooms. The robust white luminaire
casing with its glass or acrylic front cover is particularly compact. These
special luminaires – as used by REC ScanCell – are equipped with
four 54 W T5 fluorescent lamps. The integrated PC INDUSTRY and
the innovative lighting technology ensure high luminaire efficiency and
therefore good working light.
32 www.tridonicatco.com FLASH Issue 16

REC ScanCell is so impressed by the reliability of the C60-R luminaires
– and therefore of the PC INDUSTRY ballasts – that it uses them at its
technology centre in Narvik, Norway. The technology centre of REC Solar,
which is located north of the Arctic circle, is where high-quality extremely
efficient multi-crystalline solar cells are produced. These modules have
been specially developed for maximum energy production particularly
under adverse conditions or in diffused light. REC ScanCell is the fastest
growing solar cell production facility in Europe. Since it was established
in 2003 it has increased its output of solar cells to 45 MW peak power.
The measuring point is key
The two PC T8 INDUSTRY and PC T5 INDUSTRY versions from
TridonicAtco are designed for a life of 100,000 hours at an ambient
temperature of +60°C or for 50,000 hours at +70°C. The key factor
here is the limit temperature at the smoothing capacitor, which in the
PC INDUSTRY is relieved of load by a cascade circuit. An extremely
robust input section protects the sensitive electronic components
against voltage peaks of up to 4 kV. As a result, PC INDUSTRY have
an exceptionally low failure rate.
The C60-R Glamox luminaire with PC INDUSTRY looks good
especially in clean rooms
Photo-voltaics is now a real growth market since regenerative power
supplies are an efficient way of reducing CO 2
emissions and therefore
lightening the load on the environment. The ambitious expansion targets
of REC ScanCell can only be met of course if there are no interruptions
to the production process, which is what would happen if a faulty
ballast had to be replaced. At the clean room facility under the light
of 400 special C60-R luminaires the long life of the PC INDUSTRY
ballast is of crucial importance.
An innovative prevention mechanism known as Intelligent Voltage Guard
(IVG) constantly monitors the mains voltage at the control gear to protect
it against possible damage due to overvoltage or undervoltage. All this
adds up to low maintenance and economical operation of industrial
lighting systems – precisely what is required.
With this unique combination of outstanding features, the
PC T8 INDUSTRY and PC T5 INDUSTRY ballasts are competent
and reliable performers in clean rooms and any harsh industrial
environments. This innovative and unique solution from TridonicAtco
will stand up to any challenge.
Prehistoric dugout preserved
for all time
On display at the “Norsk Sjøfartsmuseum” (Norwegian Maritime Museum) is a dugout canoe that is around
2,200 years old. TALEXXstrip P521-2 LED modules from TridonicAtco, together with appropriate lenses, covers
and supports, ensure that the exhibit is adequately lit without damaging it.
Norway – a nation steeped
in maritime tradition
The Norsk Sjøfartsmuseum is beautifully located
TALEXXstrip P521 modules
meet the conservation requirements
on the waterfront at Bygdøynes and has an
extensive collection that reflects Norway’s fame
as a seafaring nation. Large exhibition halls
accommodate the interiors and deck sections
of new and old ships. Models are used to
illustrate the development of seafaring from
the Viking era, through windjammers to
present-day supertankers and cruise ships.
The museum also covers polar expeditions,
whaling and the merchant fleet during the
Second World War. The film that runs in the
auditorium looks at Norway’s coastal heritage
and maritime history. One of the exhibits is
the “Gjøa”, the arctic vessel in which Roald
Amundsen was the first to sail the north-west
passage from 1903 to 1906. Also in the harbour
is the museum’s training ship, the schooner
“Svanen”, which can be hired out for evening
excursions.
A sensitive addition
Now visitors to the museum, which was recently
expanded, can marvel at the oldest boat ever
discovered in Norway.
Around 2,200 year ago, an oak tree was
hollowed out to create a dugout. The bow
of the boat broke off in prehistoric times,
leaving a relic about 9.75 meters in length.
It is assumed that the original boat measured
some 11 meters and weighed between 1.5
and 2 tonnes.
This is the largest dugout ever discovered and
would have been used for fishing and hunting
and for transport along inland waterways.
To preserve this prehistoric find for future
generations some serious conservation
work was needed. The large windows of
the exhibition halls allow a lot of natural light
in. This means that there is a high level of UV
radiation that will damage such exhibits and
also a considerable amount of heat. To protect
the dugout a 12 meter long wall was built
parallel to the windows looking out onto the
fjord and 2.5 meters away from them. This wall
keeps direct sunlight out of the hall in which
the boat is exhibited. Fans have been installed
to ensure an even and pleasant temperature.
LED in the glass case
A glass case measuring 10.5 meters long by
1.3 meters wide by 2.0 meters high protects
the dugout from dust and contact.
The case can be opened at one end to allow
the boat to be moved in and out and for essential
maintenance work. Inside this oversize case
it is possible to create a defined atmosphere
with the right climatic conditions to preserve
and present this exceptional exhibit. A 10 cm
diameter hole has been drilled through the
concrete floor slab through which a duct leads
to the service room.
The exhibit is lit by a total of 16 high-power
TALEXXstrip P521-2 modules from
TridonicAtco to strict conservational specifications.
The modules produce light that contains
no ultra-violet or infra-red components and
generate very little heat.
ZRM ES/C for a wide range of applications
From autumn 2007 the ZRM ES/C series of ignitors will be fully rounded to cover all relevant applications.
They can be used to operate all standard high-pressure discharge lamps with outputs from 35 W to 2,000 W
in accordance with the appropriate specifications.
Now complete
Standard applications in focus
The new ES/C series includes the ZRM 2-ES/C, ZRM 2.5-ES/C and
ZRM 4.5-ES/C ignitors for outputs of 35 W to 400 W in standard
applications. It also includes high-performance ZRM 6-ES/C ignitors
for the 35 W to 400 W range for temperature-critical or low-noise
installations. The ZRM 12-ES/C version is designed for the high-end
output range from 400 W to 1,000/2,000 W. Thanks to its small
casing dimensions and optimised thermal behaviour it is ideal for
compact luminaire designs.
A complete family
The ZRM 6-ES/C and ZRM 12-ES/C ignitors in the “Standard”, “Digital
Timer Function” and “400 V Application” versions now supplement the
ZRM ES/C series of ignitors. From autumn 2007 there will therefore be
a complete range worldwide for operating high-pressure discharge lamps
with outputs from 35 W to 2,000 W.
The ZRM ES/C series is characterised above all by an attractive
price/performance ratio. Compared with the previous generation,
the casing dimensions have been reduced but the thermal behaviour
has been maintained or even improved.
Monitoring for added safety
The ZRM ES/CT versions bring added value in that they are basic units
with the addition of a compact digital timer. The timer monitors the
ignition process and the behaviour of the lamp. The starting phase
of the first time interval has been extended from 10 s to 3 min to meet
the increased demands of future light sources. If the lamp does not ignite
in this period the ignitor switches to the tried and tested pulse/pause
ignition method. This ensures that hot light sources are restarted faster
and reduces EMC interference considerably.
An automatic reset function has also been integrated in the digital ignition
control system. In digital ignitors from TridonicAtco the successful threestart
counter detects lamp cycling that can occur when a lamp comes
to the end of its life. The digital circuit reacts to this effect and terminates
the ignition process after the light source has gone out three times.
Quick breaks in the power supply lasting only a few ms and vibrations
can cause lamps to go out. The lamp is then automatically restarted
and monitored to see whether it will operate for at least 1 hour without
a problem. If this is the case, the three-start counter is reset to zero so
that it can be restarted when it next goes out.
36 www.tridonicatco.com FLASH Issue 16

This auto-reset function is particularly important if high-pressure
discharge lamps are used in factories or tunnels. Because factories
and tunnels tend to be in use round the clock the lamps and control
gear should not be disconnected from the power supply without
good cause. The auto-reset function ensures that a light source
that has randomly gone out can be reliably restarted.
Technical data
• Wattage range: 35 W - 2,000 W
• Supply voltage: 230 V or 400 V version
• Available with optional digitally controlled ignition
• Robust compact design
Specialists for 400 V
Lighting systems for commercial greenhouses are often operated
at an ac voltage of 400 V. Up to 10,000 luminaires per greenhouse
can then be installed. For this special application TridonicAtco has
developed the ZRM 6-ES/C 400 and ZRM 12-ES/C 400 ignitors.
Thanks to their compact design and excellent thermal behaviour they
are perfect for integrating in these special luminaires.
