MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRPERSON
As Chairperson of the NAIDOC Perth Committee, I am proud to present the 2009 NAIDOC Perth Annual Report.
The two events organised by the NAIDOC Perth Committee, the NAIDOC Week Opening Ceremony and the Ball surpassed
our expectations in showcasing the vibrancy of our culture and the achievements of people in our community.
The NAIDOC Perth Committee worked hard over the preceding months to organise the events and form partnerships with
key community and government organisations, and corporate groups to source funding and sponsorship. The support
we received from funding bodies and sponsors makes it possible for us to progress NAIDOC Week as a significant cultural
festival in Perth.
The Opening Ceremony at Wellington Square was a fantastic start to NAIDOC Week 2009 in Perth. Our NAIDOC Perth
Awards winners were worthy recipients who have done outstanding work in our community and the wider community.
They have achieved in the field of arts, education, health, sport and community services.
The launch of Noongar Radio and the ‘Battle of the Didges’ competition was a highlight of the Opening Ceremony. The
opportunity to have Noongar Radio broadcast live from Wellington Square was an incentive for people to attend the event.
The ‘Battle of the Didges’ competition was an extraordinary display of talents by our didj players, and congratulations to
Glenne Moore who was the inaugural winner of the competition.
I would like to acknowledge and thank PEEDAC and Noongar Radio for organising the launch of Noongar Radio and the
‘Battle of the Didges’ competition.
It was also fantastic to have the David Wirrpanda Foundation set up traditional games and to have role models like boxer,
Anthony Little and netballer, Josie Janz interacting with the children and young people. Once again, the Department of
Indigenous Affairs children’s activity area was a hive of activity with jumpy castles, a ferris wheel, face painting, and arts and
crafts for the children, which was busy all day.
The NAIDOC Ball was held at the Hyatt Regency and the theme for the Ball was the Coolbaroo Club, with a number of
Elders who were involved with the Club attending. It was a fantastic night focusing on the achievements of the Coolbaroo
Club with excerpts from the documentary shown on the night. It was a history lesson for many of the young people with
some commenting that they did not know about the Coolbaroo Club.
A three course meal was enjoyed by all those who attended, and music by Lois Olney and Lucky Oceans complimented the
night’s theme. The Yabu Band finished the night off with both traditional and contemporary dance music.
I would like to acknowledge the WA AIDS Council for their in-kind support in organising the Ball.
I would also like to thank Indigenous Community Volunteers for their support which enabled us to manage the huge 2009
Program of Events through Simon Veith and for the facilitation and assistance provided by Wendy Wise and Nick Mayman
in developing our 2009 – 2011 Strategic Plan.
We continue to see the growth and potential of NAIDOC Week as a community cultural festival. This year we had increased
numbers of people attending the Opening Ceremony and the Ball was sold out. We had more community stalls at the
Opening Ceremony and there were increased community events registered on our program of events.
The NAIDOC Perth Committee worked hard in 2009 to organise the Opening Ceremony and the Ball and the success of
these events is due to the dedication and commitment of our Committee Members. I would like to thank all Committee
Members for their work throughout the year.
We look forward to planning for NAIDOC Week in 2010.
BALL
The NAIDOC Perth Ball is the most anticipated night on the social calendar in Perth for Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander people and in 2009 featured highlights from the Coolbaroo Club, ballroom dancers and wonderful entertainment
throughout the evening. The 2009 NAIDOC Perth Ball was held at the Hyatt Regency, East Perth on 10 July, with the theme
“Honouring the Coolbaroo Club”.
From 1946 to 1960 in Perth Western Australia, the Coolbaroo Club was a meeting place and a community focus for the local
Aboriginal community. Best remembered for its popular dance place, the Coolbaroo League also ran a newspaper and
became an effective political organisation, speaking out on issues of the day affecting Aboriginal people through the story
of the club and its members.
With extensive consultation with Elders who attended the club their surviving siblings and Steve Kinnane, the NAIDOC
Perth Ball managed to recreate the Coolbaroo Club atmosphere for this year’s Ball in line with the national theme
“Honouring our Elders, nurturing our youth”. We had an overwhelming response from the community, both Aboriginal and
non-Aboriginal, with over 460 guests, 40 of which were Coolbaroo League Elders.
NAIDOC Perth would like to thank all Elders past and present who contributed to the production of the evening.
Hosts
The MC for the evening was Gina Williams, with Reverend Sealin Garlett opening the evening with
a Welcome to Country. The ball was also addressed by the Deputy Premier, Minister for Health and
Indigenous Affairs, the Hon. Dr Kim Hames, Chairperson Glenda Kickett, and keynote speeches from
Coolbaroo Club Elders Albert Corunna and Allan Kickett.
Music
LOIS OLNEY - Lois Olney was born in Roebourne and is Ngarluma on her mother’s side and Yamitji on her
father’s. Lois is an acclaimed Jazz and Blues singer in her own rights and has supported and performed
with many artists including Archie Roach, Ruby Hunter, Warrumpi band, Jimmy Little and the Lucky
Oceans.
LUCKY OCEANS - The Lucky Oceans band won the Grammy Award for Best Country Instrumental in 1978
and1993; Lucky has produced music for and with Aboriginal artists for many years including Dirt Music,
Mudcrab trio, Bran Nue Dae CD and the Coolbaroo Club documentary.
THE YABU BAND - The evening concluded with The Yabu Band. Yabu means rock / gold in Wongatha
language. The Yabu Band is from Kalgoorlie in the Goldfield region of the Western Dessert. Their genre
known as Desert Rock Reggae brought a unique and powerful performance to see out the evening.
Ballroom Dancers
Guests were treated to a display of ballroom dancing throughout the night by Steven Greenwood,
Jessica Dorman, Christian Dix and Courtney Jackman. Steven and his former partner were WA’s number
PROGRAM OF EVENTS
As well as managing the Opening Ceremony and Ball, NAIDOC Perth provides an important community service by
coordinating and distributing the Program of Events for NAIDOC Week in Perth.
The Program of Events is developed through the website as an evolving process in the lead up to NAIDOC Week. It is a case
of first in best dressed so that as soon as an event is registered with us it goes up onto the Program. Organisations thinking
of hosting an event can then look at what is on already to choose the best day and time to hold their event. The Program
was coordinated by Committee Secretary Tammy Solonec. Graphic design for the Program was provided by former
Committee member Kylie Solonec and website administration was by Indigenous Community Volunteers volunteer, Simon
Veith.
2009 saw the most events (52) registered with NAIDOC Perth on our Program of Events since our Committee commenced
operations in 2007. This has been a steady rise of events, up ten events from 2008 (42 events) and 22 from 2007 (30 events).
Each year since NAIDOC Perth commenced operating, as well as an increase in the number of events, we have seen an
increase in the number of people at our events.
Welcome additions included events by Racing and Wagering and the Noongaroke Idol Grand Final, which was won by
Johnny Ford.
Local Government was also very supportive in 2009 with numerous events organised by the Town of Kwinana, City of
Gosnells, City of Joondalup, City of Armadale, City of Fremantle, City of Belmont and the Town of Victoria Park.
On the following pages is the official Perth NAIDOC Week Program of Events for 2009. Each organisation that registered an
event was asked to provide a report. Those that did provide a report are detailed on the following pages.
