Message from the Producer 

Welcome to the first production of our 58th Season. It’s been 20 years since we’ve presented the 

tale of everyone's favorite orphan ANNIE, and it’s the perfect time in our nation’s history to revisit her 

optimism and youthful enthusiasm. We’re delighted to have the original Annie, Andrea McArdle, join 

us for this production; we’re also delighted to welcome new rising star Melody Hollis in the title role, 

and we expect to see her name in lights soon. 

We want to thank our season sponsors, Ken and Dottie Reiner and the Ackerman Family/Evalyn M. 

Bauer Foundation for once again laying the foundation for our 2010-2011 Season. Special thanks 

to Arlene Solomon and Sid Schulman for serving as the Honorary Producers for ANNIE and Don and 

Terry Marté Greco as well as Friends of Sara Wenkle Kaplan for serving as Associate Producers. 

Musical Theatre West was honored to receive ten L.A. Stage Ovation nominations for last season, 

ranking us among the top four theaters in nominations this year. Although the actual awards won’t be announced until 

January 17, to be recognized by our peers for outstanding work is always a great honor. Congratulations to all our 

actors and directors who received nominations for their work in our productions. 

It’s been said that “it takes a village” and this is especially true in the theater and the wonderful group of supporters, 

staff and performers who make up the MTW family. We salute two of our strongest supporters who passed away in 

the last two months, Sara Wenkle Kaplan and my wonderful dad, Don Garman. These community leaders gave of 

their time and resources to help make MTW the strong organization it is today. Both were invaluable mentors to me, 

my dad for my whole life, from the time he encouraged me to audition for shows as a youngster, supported and 

encouraged me as I began to run the company and even allowed MTW to store sets in his company’s warehouse for 

a number of years. He was always my biggest fan and was so proud of MTW’s accomplishments over the years. 

Sara Wenkle Kaplan became a MTW supporter in the mid-’90s and quickly became a leading advocate for MTW in 

the community, introducing hundreds of patrons to our productions. She was one of the foundational donors in helping 

us acquire our current office and rehearsal facility and was always first in line to contribute to whatever need MTW 

had. Both of them will be sorely missed by all of us at MTW, and especially by me. Both were also members of our 

Legacy Society and remembered MTW in their wills. We hope others of you will consider helping secure MTW’s 

future in this way (see page 16 of this program for more details). 

As we look ahead, we’d like to once again say how grateful we are for your support of our mission and this truly 

American art form. We hope you’ll continue to join us as we enrich the life of our community by presenting the very

Popular? 

The popularity of Little Orphan 

Annie goes back to 1885 and a 

poem by James Whitcomb Riley. 

The child of the poem was based 

on Mary Alice “Allie” Smith, an 

orphan who was living with Riley; 

a printing error changed “Allie” to 

“Annie.” This same poem was also 

a partial inspiration for the Raggedy 

Ann doll that became popular 

in the 1910s. 

In 1924, cartoonist Harold Gray 

submitted “Little Orphan Otto” to 

the Chicago Tribune Syndicate. At 

their suggestion, the character and 

title were changed to “Little Orphan 

Annie.” As in the musical,

There will be a fifteen-minute intermission between acts. 

Annie and the orphans in an early strip. 

Annie was taken out of a Dickensian 

orphanage by the wealthy 

Oliver Warbucks and became best 

friends with the runaway dog 

Sandy. The strip became a huge 

hit almost immediately - so much so 

that in 1927 the rival King Features 

Syndicate released “Little 

Annie Rooney,” a strip about an 

orphaned girl who went on adventures 

with her dog; popular in its 

own right, that strip ran until 1966. 

At first “Little Orphan Annie” was 

primarily a humor 

strip aimed at 

children, but as its 

popularity increased 

amongst 

adults the strip 

became more 

adventure-driven 

and even political 

in nature. Gray was known for 

what would today be considered 

conservative or even Libertarian 

political leanings, and often received 

criticism for airing his political 

views or personal grudges 

within the comic strip. He even 

went so far as to kill off Warbucks 

in 1944 as a display of opposition 

to President Roosevelt’s New Deal 

policies (after FDR’s death Warbucks 

was resurrected). The strip’s 

popularity led to a radio show and 

movies in the 1930s and 40s.

Cast Profiles 

MELODY HOLLIS (Annie) 

Melody is 12 years old. She made her Broadway debut originating the role of 

Susan Waverly in Irving Berlin’s White Christmas under the direction of Walter 

Bobbie, a role she also played at the Ordway Theatre in St. Paul and at the Wang 

Center in Boston. Melody was delighted to perform as part of the original Broadway 

cast of White Christmas in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on NBC. She 

made her professional debut as Skylar in the world premiere of Dollhosue directed 

by Robert Falls at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago. Some of her other favorite 

stage roles include Jojo in Marriott Lincolnshire’s Seussical, Gretl in Theatre at the 

Center’s The Sound of Music and Molly in Annie. Film credits include “Fred Claus” 

and “A Golden Christmas.” Melody has appeared in episodes of “Criminal Minds,” “The Young and the 

Restless,” and in numerous national commercials. When not performing Melody enjoys cooking, swimming, 

and playing with her dog. She is a proud member of “Kids With a Cause”, the SAG “Looking Ahead” 

program and AEA. Special thanks to Beverly Strong management, her wonderful agents at C.E.S.D., and

JEFF AUSTIN (Oliver Warbucks) 

Some of Jeff’s Southern California stage credits include Buffalo Bill in Annie Get

Petruchio in Kiss Me, Kate at the Old Town Theatre in San Diego, Warbucks in 

Annie at for McCoy/Rigby, The Sergeant in The Boys From Syracuse at the Doolittle 

Theatre in Hollywood, Pasco in the First National Touring Company of City of Angels 

at the Shubert Theatre and Hajj in Kismet at Riverside CLO. Other notable 

theatre credits include Herbie in Gypsy at Robert Redford’s Sundance Theatre, 

Roberts in the National Revival Tour of The Unsinkable Molly Brown starring Debbie 

Reynolds and Peron in the critically acclaimed European tour of Evita. Jeff also 

created the role of Ernst Reuter, the mayor elect of Berlin, in the New York premiere of Berlin based on 

the famous airlift of World War II. Some of his TV Guest Star credits include “Better With You”, “The

ANDREA McARDLE (Miss Hannigan) 

Andrea first captured the hearts of theatergoers everywhere in 1977 when she originated 

the title role in the mega-musical Annie. Since then, she has starred in several Broadway 

musicals and appeared in theatres in New York, nationally and internationally. She has 

performed in concert halls from Carnegie Hall to the Hong Kong Philharmonic. She has 

honed her craft by working with some of the great legends of the entertainment industry 

such as Ethel Merman, Liza Minnelli, Julie Andrews, Bob Hope, Liberace, Frank Sinatra, 

Steve Martin and Martin Short, to name a few, and was privileged to have appeared on 

television with Johnny Carson, Merv Griffin and Dinah Shore. As “Annie”, Andrea became 

the youngest performer ever to be nominated for a Tony Award as Best Lead Actress in a 

Musical. She also received the Theater World and Outer Critics' Circle Awards for her performance and went on to 

star when the show was produced on London’s West End. Coming full circle, Andrea was tapped by Academy 

Award nominated director Rob Marshall to appear as the “Star to Be” in the Disney/ABC television production of 

“Annie” which won him an Emmy. Also on Broadway, Andrea starred in the Jerry Herman musical Jerry’s Girls 

alongside Carol Channing and Leslie Uggams; she portrayed the sassy Smoking Car, Ashley, in Andrew Lloyd 

Webber’s Starlight Express; and starred as Margy Frake in State Fair; as Fantine in Les Miserables and, most recently 

as Belle in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. She toured nationally starring as Sally Bowles in Cabaret and as 

Eponine in Les Misérables and appeared as herself in The Vagina Monologues. Some of Andrea’s favorite roles 

include starring as Esther, the Judy Garland role, in Meet Me in St. Louis; Sonia in They’re Playing Our Song; Luisa in 

The Fantasticks; Eva Peron in Evita; Nancy in Oliver!; the Narrator in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat; 

Annie Oakley in Annie Get Your Gun, Sandy in Grease and as Mama Rose in Gypsy. In addition to Annie, Andrea’s 

film and television credits include starring as Judy Garland in “Rainbow”, appearing in “The Leading Ladies of 

Broadway” on PBS, “All My Children” on ABC and headlining her own PBS special “Andrea McArdle On Broadway”. 

Andrea resides in New York City with her daughter, Alexis Kalehoff. She dedicates this performance to the 

late, great Lola (Sandy).

JENNA ROSEN (Duffy) 

Jenna is thrilled to be scrubbing the floors in Annie for Musical Theater West! Recent 

credits include: Dani in Dani Girl (West Coast premiere), Carolyn in The House of Finnegan 

(West Coast premiere, original cast album), Evita (FCLO), Phantom (FCLO), Annie 

(Molly) and the national tour of Joseph… (w/Patrick Cassidy). In July, Jenna was a soloist 

for Disneyland’s 55 th Anniversary Rededication. Jenna has traveled the U.S. and Canada 

as a Company Kid with Orange County Song and Dance. She would like to thank

PAIGE BEFELER (July) 

Musical Theatre West Debut! Paige made her stage debut as Gretl in The Sound of 

Music at the 5th Ave. Theatre in Seattle, starring Terrance Mann. Since then, she has 

been an Orange County Song and Dance "Company Kid"; performing throughout Southern 

California, and in Knott's Berry Farm's Holiday parade and shows. A 5th grader, she 

played the roles of: Annie in Annie, Glinda in The Wizard of Oz, and Sandy in Grease in 

her school productions. When not singing and dancing, Paige can be found playing 

soccer, and was a member of AYSO 58's All Star Champion Soccer Team last year. 

ALEXA FREEMAN (Pepper) 

Alexa is thrilled to be returning to Musical Theatre West for her second show. You may 

remember her as Agnes in last year’s Meet Me in St. Louis. Other regional credits include 

Kate in Annie (Tuachan). This summer she blew up like a blueberry as Violet in Willy 

Wonka (P.S. Productions). Previously, she flew across the stage as Michael in Peter Pan 

(Signature Productions). Alexa is 12 years old and in the 7th grade. She has been singing,

Danielle is excited to make her MTW debut. Danielle was the Little Girl in Ragtime, Anna 

Ludwig in Cabaret, and soloist in several Revues with Musical Theatre of Los Angeles. She 

has also performed in Willy Wonka, Little Shop of Horrors, Annie, Peter Pan and Yo Ho Ho 

A Pirate’s Chrismtas (she will again play Eve this holiday season at the NoHo Arts Center). 

Danielle can be seen as a series regular on “Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader” and

Gracie is eight years old. Last season she played Tootie in Meet Me in St. Louis, and was 

excited to be recognized as Outstanding Featured Actress in a Musical by Stage Scene 

L.A., as well as Most Promising Newcomer by the Southern California Motion Picture 

Council. Other credits include Annie in Annie, Jr., Tulip in A Faery Hunt, Fern in Charlotte’s 

Web and Sally in A Charlie Brown Christmas. Film/TV credits include “Witch Creek”, 

“Spirit of America” (USA Pavilion at the Shanghai World Expo) and “Special Agent Oso” 

for the Disney Channel. She loves books, animals, her parents and little brother Henry.

Jef (with one F) is making his Musical Theatre West debut and was most recently seen in 

the role of Roscoe Dexter in Singin’ in the Rain at the Norris Theatre. Prior to that: Bob in 

Boomers and Professor Riley in Shadowlands with the American Coast Theatre Company. 

His credits on the East Coast include Pat Denning in 42 nd Street, Coach Bolton in High 

School Musical at the Alhambra Dinner Theatre and Joe Boyd in Damn Yankees at Cortland

A member of SAG and AFTRA, Amberly has starred in award-winning independent films,

Woods as the Witch, the Narrator in Joseph…, Vi in Footloose, Brooke in Noises Off, 

Vera in Ten Little Indians and MTSC’s Annie as Grace. She’s been a Nashville recording 

artist, writer and producer (album titled “In Your Hands”) and owns her own publishing 

company, representing both herself and other songwriters. A Valedictorian graduate of 

CSU Fullerton, Amberly is currently a teacher/director at Fullerton College, as well as to 

her adorable toddler and supportive husband.

TODD NIELSEN (Drake/Ensemble) 

Todd is thrilled to return to MTW having just appeared as Charles Thomson in 1776 and 

prior to that as the Tin Man in The Wizard of Oz. Todd spends most of his theatre time as 

a Stage Director. He directed the first in the Reiner Reading Series, Ben Franklin in Paris 

for Musical Theatre West. Other recent productions are Godspell for Chapman University, 

How the Other Half Loves for ICT in Long Beach, No Sex Please, We’re British for the 

Norris Theatre, and White Christmas for Cabrillo Music Theatre. Todd has been seen by 

LA audiences in productions of Leading Ladies, Side Show, An Ideal Husband, and City of 

Angels. 

JENNIFER STRATTAN (Sophie the Kettle/Mrs. Pugh/Ensemble) 

Jennifer is thrilled to be returning to our stage, after appearing as Shirley Markowitz in 

The Producers. Theatre credits include Princess Winnifred in Once Upon a Mattress, Sister 

Mary Amnesia in Nunsense (Garland Award nominee), Dulcie in The Boy Friend, Joy in 

Cinderella (Inland Theater League Award) and Meg Brockie in Brigadoon. When not 

"treading the boards," Jennifer likes to spend her time with her beautiful nieces, Emma, 

Ava and Sophia. She is honored to be sharing the stage with such a talented cast and 

would like to thank Steve, Roger, Daniel and Paul for giving her this opportunity. “For

MIKEY (Sandy) 

Mikey was discovered by his guardian and trainer William Berloni in the spring 2005 

when he was three years old. Mikey was seized from a family who neglected him for the 

first three years of his live. When Mr. Berloni first adopted him, he had to be treated for 

Heartworm disease which could have been fatal. Later in 2005 Mikey hit the road in the 

30 th Anniversary tour of Annie as the understudy to a dog named Lola who was “Sandy”. 

After Lola retired on the road, Mikey took over the role and has been starring in Annie 

for last three years. In the proud tradition of all the dogs Mr. Berloni has rescued and 

trained, Mikey carries on his mission to help the plight of unwanted animals by proving 

they all can be stars. Mikey is handled by his favorite handler, Brian Hoffman and they 

dedicate this performance to Lola.

STEVEN GLAUDINI (Director/Artistic Director) 

Steven is thrilled to be on the wonderful team at Musical 

Theatre West. For five years Steven served as the 

Executive Director/Producer of Performance Riverside, 

a non-profit professional theatre company in the Inland 

Empire. Under his leadership he brought wide acclaim 

to his venue with his varied show selections and along 

the way won several awards, chiefly the 2004 L.A. 

Stage Alliance Ovation Award for Best Musical for his 

production of 1776. Steven had spent the two years 

prior to joining the MTW family as an Equity Agent for 

KSR in Studio City. Steve also is an Award-winning 

director and sites these shows as favorites: MTW’s 

recent hits Little Shop of Horrors, The Producers (Two 

2009 Ovation Awards), All Shook Up (2008 Ovation 

Nomination for Best Musical and Best Director), The Full 

Monty, The Pirates of Penzance, and The Pajama Game.

(2008 San Diego Theatre Critic’s Circle Award 

for Best Director), West Side Story (2007 San Diego

PAUL GARMAN (Executive Director/Producer) 

Paul began his association with Musical Theatre West 

in 1963 as a performer when the company was known 

as Whittier Civic Light Opera.. He continued performing 

throughout high school and at UCLA. He has served 

as producer for Musical Theatre West since the mid- 

1970s. Prior to that he served seven years as the 

company's President. Of the 160 Musical Theatre West 

major productions, Paul has been involved with all but 

16, producing over 120 of them. Through his guidance 

and leadership Musical Theatre West has grown from 

an amateur community organization to a nationally 

respected regional theater group, entertaining over 

60,000 patrons annually and garnering critical acclaim 

and numerous awards. In 2007 the organization 

was presented with the L.A. Drama Critics’ Circle 

Award for Sustained Excellence in theater and last 

year won the L.A. Ovation awards for Best Musical 

Ensemble as well as Best Featured Actress in a Musical, 

to add to their many awards over the years. Paul 

received the Arts Community Leadership award from 

the Arts Council for Long Beach in 2002 and Arts Education 

Hero of the Year Award from the Carpenter 

Performing Arts Center in 2008. He has been inducted 

into the La Serna High School Hall of Fame and was 

honored as Distinguished Alumni of Whittier by the 

Whittier Historical Society. His key passion remains the 

cultivation of new works for the musical stage and 

introducing young audiences to musical theater. 

KEVIN CLOWES (Technical Director) 

Kevin is happy to be working on his 67th production 

with Musical Theatre West. Over the years, his duties 

have included Set Designer, Technical Director, Master 

Carpenter, Lighting Designer. In addition to MTW, 

Kevin has worked as a Technical Director for McCoy- 

Rigby Entertainment, Stagelight Family Productions and 

spent five seasons with CLO of South Bay Cities. Kevin 

is instructor of Scene Design and Technical Production

VERNON WILLET (Stage Manager) 

Vernon is quite pleased to be coming back to the MTW 

family having just done The Marvelous Wonderettes this 

past April. Mr. Willet has helmed productions at the 

Laguna Playhouse, the Rubicon Theatre, the Colony 

Theatre, the Canon Theatre, the Alex Theatre, the 

Pasadena Playhouse, the 1000 Oaks Performing Arts 

Center, the Los Angeles Theatre Center and Theatre 

Aspen, to name just a few. He has worked with the 

Oregon Ballet Theatre and the Marla Bingham Contemporary 

Ballet and was the Production Manager for 

the Musical Theatre Guild in L.A. Vernon shares his life 

with award-winning director/choreographer/champion 

ballroom dancer Cate Caplin and has been a proud 

member of Actors Equity Association since 1983. 

MARY RITENHOUR (Assistant Stage Manager) 

Mary started working with Musical Theatre West as the 

Properties Mistress for Annie in 1989. Since 1997 she 

has served as the Assistant Stage Manager on each 

MTW production. Of the 89 shows she’s been a part of 

she’s seen a wide array of musical comedy, but she 

counts Children of Eden, Singin’ in the Rain, Ragtime and 

The Full Monty among her favorites. Mary is currently 

accepting bribes to keep from making public some of 

the stories she’s heard over the years. If this applies to

MELANIE CAVANESS (Properties) 

Annie marks Melanie’s 21st production as co-prop(tart)

It has never felt like a hard-knock life while working on 

an MTW production. It has, in fact, been a great honor

William’s Broadway animal training credits include the

Mr. Berloni has also trained animals for hundreds of 

Off-Broadway shows, regional theaters, tours, movies 

and television shows. Films include “Charlie Wilson’s 

Wars” and the upcoming “Someday This Pain Will Be 

Useful” starring Marcia Gay Harden, Lucy Liu and Ellen 

Burstyn. Television includes the last seven seasons of 

“Sesame Street,” “Reading Rainbow,” “Oobi,” “Animal 

Planet’s Wild on the Set,” “Dogs 101” and 

“Outrageous Animals.” In January 2010, Dog Fancy 

Magazine included him as one of the “Top 40 Dog 

People You’ve Gotta Know.” His animals have appeared 

for the White House for presidents Carter, 

Reagan, Bush, Clinton and Obama. As an author he has 

written “Sandy: The Autobiography of a Star” published 

by Simon and Schuster, “Doga” by Chronicle 

Books and his latest book “Broadway Tails” by Globe 

Pequot Press, available now in stores and online. Proceeds 

of that book will be donated to the Sandy Fund 

and the Humane Society of New York. Mr. Berloni has 

received the ASPCA Humanitarian Award and the 

American Humane Association Craven Award for his 

work on Broadway. Mr. Berloni, his wife Dorothy and 

their daughter Jenna, live on a farm in Connecticut with 

twenty-three dogs, four cats, four horses, a pony, two 

llamas, and a miniature donkey. Mr. Berloni is currently 

the Director of Animal Behavior for the Humane Society 

of New York and is involved in helping animals that

Leapin’ Lizards! Can you believe it? It’s been 33 

years since ANNIE first opened on Broadway. Of 

course, some of us remember Little Orphan Annie and 

her dog Sandy from the cartoon strips in the evening 

newspaper. Did you have to wait till your father had 

finished reading the entire paper before you could 

catch up on what was going on? I did, when Sunday 

came around we all called them the Sunday Funnies, 

even though some of the strips were not funny at all. 

Time certainly flies, seems like only yesterday we 

were celebrating the birth our nation with our production 

of 1776, and here we are, ready to begin our 

58 th season of outstanding musical theater productions. 

We, the Musical Theatre West Guild, thank you 

for joining us for the first production of our 2010- 

2011 season, ANNIE. 

On another note, let me take a moment to tell you 

about the MTW Guild, a group of dedicated volunteers, 

I am very proud to represent, who give generously 

of their time and talent to help assure your 

MTW entertainment experience is a great one. During 

this, our 58 th season, the MTW Guild will strive to 

make your trip to the theater and the time you spend 

with us special. Our volunteers are the men and 

women who welcome you to the theater, give you 

your program, and show you to your seat. We work 

behind the scenes in the office, feed the cast, help 

with costumes, and provide you with some wonderful 

shopping opportunities at our Gift Booth. Profits from 

our Gift Booth provide funds to help support our 

Youth Cultural Enrichment Program. Please stop by

On behalf of Footlighters, welcome to the first production 

of the year, as Musical Theater West celebrates 

its 58 th season! “Annie” is a warm, feel-good, 

comedic show, and of course “Sandy” will steal your 

heart. We know you love musical theater, as you are 

here in the audience tonight, and this performance 

will meet and exceed your expectations. 

Footlighters is dedicated to serving the community in 

several ways. We support the Youth Cultural Enrichment 

Program where students are invited to attend 

special performances of the shows to educate them in 

the delights of Musical Theater. For many students, 

this is an opportunity to learn firsthand about the 

unique American art form of live theater. The students 

love it, and write interesting and heartwarming letters 

to Paul Garman, Executive Director/ Producer of 

Musical Theater West. Footlighters also offers scholarships 

each year to promising high school students 

who wish to pursue a career in the theater. Auditions 

are held in the early Spring, and it is always a difficult 

choice, as there is a lot of talent at the high school 

level that is just waiting for an opportunity to gain 

experience and succeed in the theater setting. 

In order to support our philanthropic efforts, Footlighters 

has two major fund-raisers each year, we 

have four events called “Music in the Morning” where 

a preview of the upcoming show is given by the actors 

in the production, and we receive monies from 

donations of members and others. We invite you to 

be a part of Footlighters by joining our organization.

located at 4350 E. 7th Street (on the 

southwest corner of Ximeno Avenue).
