RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
Confession of Sins Acceptance of Penance
In the sacrament of reconciliation we celebrate God's forgiving
love. We also rejoice that the community loves
and accepts us despite our sin. After being welcomed by
the priest, listening to the word of God, and examining
our conscience, we confess our sins. Confession is a way
the church has of saying we are loved, that we can come
home. It is also a way to help us say that we are sorry.
Confession reminds us how to live in Christ's way.
Confession is always made in the light of. God's mercy.
We talk with the priest in a conversational and clarifying
way. Confession is not just a listing of sins, but rather a
consideration of what we have done or failed to do. We
also determine how we will change so we can live more
fully as the family of God.
When the community gathers to celebrate the rite, all say
the Confiteor together (I confess to almighty God ...)' a
general formula for confession. We also pray together the
Our Father, the prayer of Jesus. In this prayer we ask for
forgiveness. Both of these prayers, coming before the
individual confession of sins, clearly remind us that we
are a family, brothers and sisters who affect one another's
lives by the way we live or fall to live gospel lives.
Just as we try to make up and become friends again with
someone we have hurt, so the priest—who represents the
community and Christ—suggests an act of penance to
make up for the past and help us begin a new life. This
act of penance is sometimes a prayer, a service, or a work
of mercy. All these things are signs of our sorrow and
desire to walk again with God and God's people. These
actions remind us that sin and forgiveness affect the entire
community.
• As a sign of these rites, the word sorry has been placed
on the parish patchwork quilt.
"The Blessed Virgin Mary..."
The subject of this immunity from original sin is the person of
Mary at the moment of the creation of her soul and its infusion
into her body.
Sign of the Times
As a little girl climbed onto Santa’s lap. Santa
asked the usual, “And what would you like for
Christmas?”
The child stared at him for a minute, then
gasped, “Didn’t you get my e-mail?”
A woman went to the post office to buy
stamps for her Christmas cards. “What denomination?”
asked the clerk.
“Oh, good heavens! Have we come to this?”
said the woman. “Well, give me 30 Catholic ones, 10
Baptist ones, 20 Lutherans and 40 Presbyterian.”
Each year it seems there are more families in need
of assistance. Thanks to the donations made both
financially and with food donations we are able to
continue this ministry.
Thank you
As Christmas approached, a young boy was
praying upstairs while his mother sat beside him. His
dad and grandmother were downstairs. “Lord, I pray
for a train set, a remote-control car and a new bicycle!!!
He proclaimed.
“You don’t have to shout, dear,” said his
mom. “God’s not deaf.”
“I know,” said the boy. “But Grandma is.”

The Road Trip-A Travel Guide for Life’s Journey
By Kathleen Graviano
We all have a purpose in this life, but our purpose is not an end
result. The journey from our first pitiful cry to our last breath
and sigh— the challenging road trip that is life is what brings
us excitement, meaning and lasting grace. In The Road Trip: A
Travel Guide for Life’s Journey, teacher and author Kathleen
Graviano, who is also Deacon Tony’s wife, shares the many
lessons she has learned along life’s way and helps us discover
the skills and attitudes to not only survive our journey but to
actually enjoy the ride.
The Road Trip is available at our religious store in the front of
the church. It is also available through your local bookseller or
preferred on-line retailer such as Amazon or Barnes and Noble.
