Letter from Our Dean
Welcome, from the LSU School of Veterinary
Medicine (LSU SVM). It is with great pride that
I present this 2009 Annual Report highlighting our
educational, research, and service achievements, plus
profiles of individuals who have impacted and been
impacted by LSU SVM. We are inspired by their stories.
Carrying on a lasting tradition spanning decades,
LSU SVM continues to provide superior education in
veterinary medicine and related fields. An impressive
98 percent of our veterinary students pass the
national accreditation exam prior to graduation,
and the graduate program continues to foster premier
biomedical research scientists.
In addition to preparing the next generation of
veterinarians, LSU SVM provides a range of critical
services to the general public and veterinary medical
colleagues. An outstanding example is our innovative
Shelter Medicine / Disaster Response program.
It directly supports local animal shelters in times
of emergencies, and between disasters, provides
community outreach on animal care, and trains
students in shelter medicine basics and disaster
response.
An equally crucial part of our mission is research,
in both basic and applied fields. As you’ll read, an
$11 million grant has launched a collaborative
effort with the Tulane National Primate Research
Center to conduct infectious disease research. Our
Veterinary Teaching Hospital is also thriving, providing
care for over 22,000 companion and other animals in
Fiscal Year 2009 (July 1, 2008 –June 30, 2009). The
Veterinary Teaching Hospital provides our students with
hands-on experience and the opportunity to reinforce
what they have learned in their coursework.
In May 2009, LSU SVM graduated its 33rd class of
veterinarians. We have graduated 2,338 veterinarians
since 1977, and every year, the debt load many
graduates face seems more daunting than before.
Knowing this reality, gifts from alumni and friends of
LSU SVM to the Advance Veterinary Medicine Fund
enabled us to institute the Dean’s Student Scholarship
Endowment Initiative. With this initiative, we boosted
the funds distributed by each of our endowed
scholarships to ensure a minimum $2,000 award for
every scholarship recipient. Our goal is to award $5,000
per scholarship for 2010, and with your outstanding
generosity, it is within reach.
As a state institution, LSU continues to be fiscally
responsible, and our priorities remain focused on all of
you―students, faculty, staff, alumni, and clients―who
have been incredibly supportive during these difficult
times. This Annual Report celebrates you—our alumni
and donors who uphold this mission and make success
a reality. Thank you for your steadfast support.
Cultivating Excellence through . . .
A Passion for Our Mission: Education,
Research and Service
While every veterinary school – by definition –
educates, LSU’s School of Veterinary Medicine is
one of the elite with a tripartite mission that includes
research and service. But meeting our mission isn’t
enough – SVM prides itself on going above and
beyond.
“Some call it a job – we call it passion,” is more than
a slogan at SVM, it is a time-honored tradition. For 38
years, we have exceeded our mission with the highest
quality of care, professionalism, and ingenuity. As the
world of veterinary medicine evolves and expands,
we are well-positioned to continue our leadership role
within the state and nationally, but success, as always,
depends on you – our supporters and alumni.
Today, we are pleased to share with you in this
Annual Report the stories of what we have been able
to accomplish thanks to your thoughtful giving and
ongoing support.
EDUCATION
As one of only 28 veterinary schools in the U.S. and the
only one in Louisiana, LSU SVM educates Louisianans
and others to fill positions in veterinary practices,
research labs, military and government institutions,
and the private sector. This past May, we conferred
81 Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degrees at our 33rd
annual commencement. This year, over 640 applicants
for the Class of 2013 submitted their credentials
for acceptance to our program, affirming that our
profession continues to attract a large and competitive
applicant pool.
As ever, our professional curriculum is vigorous, with
first-year students taking between 22 and 24 hours per
semester. Our goal is to provide LSU SVM students
with the highest quality education in a supportive
environment. The proof of our success is a consistent
pass rate of 98% on the National Board Exam, well
above the national average.
Matthew McGeachy from New Orleans is one of the
students in our entering class of 87 students, of whom
Drs. Renee Carter and Eric Storey, veterinary ophthalmologists.
From left, Dean Peter Haynes, Chancellor Mike Martin, Dr.
Jeff Brant, and Dr. Steve Slaton (LSU SVM 1990).
6
Education, Research, Service
75% were female, with an average age of 23, and
an average GRE score of 1143. Like Matthew, our
students are smart, passionate, and ready to succeed
at LSU and in their future profession. Matthew is
looking forward to working in equine orthopedics after
he graduates, and like most students, is nervous about
accumulating a large amount of debt in pursuit of his
degree.
To meet the growing needs of our students, alumni,
and community, we set aside time earlier this year to
do some strategic and innovative thinking. In 2009,
in response to the downturn of the market, we shifted
Annual Funds from donors like you to support our
endowed scholarships, ensuring that our students
receive the support they need and deserve. Going
forward, we will put greater emphasis on these vital
annual funds in order to continue to be responsive to
market changes, economic and natural disasters, and
other negative influences.
The School has embarked on a Comprehensive
Strategic Planning Initiative. During a two-day,
facilitated Stakeholder Summit with both internal
leadership and faculty members, and external
stakeholders including alumni and professionals, we
discussed the future of veterinary medicine. The group
identified economic conditions and significant future
internal factors that included facility upgrades, faculty
recruitment and retention, and student demographics
and debt burdens to be factored into our strategic
planning.
Two priorities clearly emerged: for LSU SVM to
achieve national recognition through establishment
of Center(s) of Excellence, and to design and
implement a contemporary, competitive Veterinary
Teaching Hospital. Timelines have been developed
and leadership roles are in place, and LSU SVM is
committed to keeping you informed and continually
engaged in the process as we pursue these ambitious
and highly important goals.
RESEARCH
This summer, with a renewal of a grant from the
National Institutes of Health (NIH) for $11.1 million, LSU
Graduate student Samantha Taylor.
From left, Dean Peter Haynes, Provost Astrid Merget, Executive
Director for Institutional Advancement Judyth Wier, and
President Emeritus William Jenkins.
7
SVM continues to provide opportunities for assistant
and associate professors to launch competitive
research programs encompassing four integrated
research projects on infectious diseases. Eventually
these projects will be able to effectively compete for
independent federal funding to better understand the
mechanisms of diseases like human immunodeficiency
virus (HIV) and Lyme disease.
The School also received $3.8 million in extramural
grants for the investigation of respiratory diseases in
both humans and animals, which promises to advance
basic knowledge in the pulmonary system’s response to
various agents, as well as treatment and prevention of
a variety of human and animal diseases.
We continue to have strong and productive
relationships with research partners, including LSU’s
College of Basic Sciences, LSU AgCenter, National
Hansen’s Disease Center, Pennington Biomedical
Research Center, and the Tulane National Primate
Research Center.
SERVICE
In addition to education and research, SVM stands tall
with expertise and services offered to our community
24/7, as we give superb emergency care to clients in
our Veterinary Teaching Hospital and Clinics. In Fiscal
Year 2009, we served 7,878 owners during 22,811
client visits. As a teaching facility, SVM is charged with
maintaining an exemplary learning environment for
students, residents, and interns, under the supervision
of dedicated faculty who offer leadership, mentorship,
and a superior education.
To uphold the standards of excellence for care and
teaching, advanced equipment is a critical need at
SVM. We recently acquired an Hitachi Echelon 1.5
Tesla Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) unit thanks
to the generosity of our donors. This is the first and
only high-field MRI unit in Louisiana for veterinary use
and allows both small- and large-animal patients to
be examined. In addition to diagnostics, the MRI unit
Cadeau and Duma.
will be used in teaching and to conduct non-invasive
research studies.
In countless ways, LSU SVM takes a leading role in
advancing the world of veterinary medicine through
service and commitment. That passion was evident in
the Equine Clinic this spring with the birth of a beautiful
foal, Cadeau. Born to Duma, a Thoroughbred mare
donated to SVM after she repeatedly failed to produce
a foal, the LSU team led by Dr. Sara Lyle achieved a
great accomplishment. Their carefully developed plan
to attempt a healthy pregnancy resulted in the “gift” of
Cadeau, as her name translates.
The LSU School of Veterinary Medicine knows gifts like
this cannot happen without gifts like yours, which make
the outstanding health care, education, and service we
provide possible in the first place.
A few facts about our past year that show how your
generous gifts help LSU SVM provide outstanding
health care and education:
• 10 animals’ lives were saved with emergency
hemodialysis.
• 18 students received much needed scholarship
support through your gifts to the Advance Veterinary
Medicine Fund.
• 33 interns and residents are receiving specialized
training in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital.
• 50 microscopes were purchased to upgrade
student laboratory instruction.
• 68 students are pursuing MS and PhD degrees.
• Over 170 MRI examinations have been performed
in the first six months since the unit was installed in
April 2009.
• 1,700 animals were treated by the Wildlife Hospital
of Louisiana, with a 45% overall release rate.
• Over 2,500 after-hours emergency cases were
presented (an average of seven per day).
• 22,811 patients were served by the Veterinary
Teaching Hospital, which is always open.
Thank you, for your wisdom in choosing to advance
excellence, and the success of the LSU School of
Veterinary Medicine. ■
Financial Report
The School of Veterinary Medicine’s (LSU SVM) operating budget for Fiscal Year 2009 (July 1, 2008–June 30, 2009)
was just over $43 million. This was $3.01 million (7.5%) greater than the previous fiscal year. The majority of this
increase came from Teaching Hospital revenue and tuition and fees. LSU SVM revenue is basically composed of
three sources: 56% State Appropriation; 23% Self-Generated (mainly Teaching Hospital operations); and 17% Tuition
and Fees. Philanthropic giving in fiscal year 2009 amounted to $1.56 million. This was an 82% increase from the
previous fiscal year. The operating budget expenditures are categorized into seven functions: Instruction, Research,
Operations and Maintenance, Academic Support, Public Service, Institutional Support, and Student Service,
Scholarships and Transfers. As seen on the pie charts, approximately 53% of our expenditures are for instruction and
18% percent for research. The remaining 29% is split among Operations and Maintenance, Academic Support, Public
Service, Institutional Support, and Student Services.
As we come to the end of another fiscal year and are looking toward uncertain times, the financial position of LSU
SVM has never been stronger. The resources that have been generated from operations and by support from our
donors and alumni are an important responsibility and opportunity for LSU SVM. Our focus on managing the financial
assets of LSU SVM with an eye to the future and achieving a financial position that allows us to expand our reach,
and to face the unforeseen, will serve us well in the coming year. ■
Through Philanthropy
. . . [John] would have been honored to
know that he helped make this facility
possible for the State of Louisiana.
~ Alta Franks
Providing a modern disease isolation facility for
horses and other large animals has long been
a goal of the Equine Health Studies Program. While
improving several areas of the Large Animal Clinic,
including a new Intensive Care Unit and a Lameness
and Performance Evaluation Unit, the push to
construct a state-of-the-art disease isolation facility has
consistently been a high priority.
Through the generosity of the Alta and John Franks
Foundation, this disease isolation facility will be a
reality. This facility will provide LSU SVM with a
necessary component of the comprehensive Large
Animal Clinic and also help maintain accreditation by
the American Veterinary Medical Association.
The new facility will be named in honor of the late
John Franks, a Louisiana native who was a revered
horseman known throughout the world of Thoroughbred
racing. Mr. Franks campaigned many stakes winners
and was a four-time recipient of the internationally
recognized Eclipse Award for Outstanding Owner of the
Year.
“John really enjoyed the competitive nature of horse
racing and I think he would have been honored to know
that he helped make this facility possible for the State of
Louisiana,” said Mrs. Franks. The private donation from
the Alta and John Franks Foundation along with state
matching dollars provided the necessary funding, and
the new facility will be dedicated in the summer of 2010.
“This facility would not have been possible without the
generous support of private donors,” said Dr. Peter
F. Haynes, dean of LSU SVM. “We are extremely
grateful to all who have contributed to this effort―and
there were quite a number that gave in some way. But
the core of the realization of this new facility can be
attributed to the generosity and impact of the legacy of
Mr. John Franks.” ■
Understanding the importance of healing hands, Dr.
Candace Warner, a local physician-acupuncturist,
has remembered the School of Veterinary Medicine in
her estate plans. She has become one of our Legacy
“Dr. Foil was wonderful,” said Candace. “She was so
helpful to us and so good with Daisy—after the surgery
Daisy was like a new dog!”
. . . perhaps what has brought us
the most joy has been seeing the big
smile on the face of our 11-year-old
chocolate lab, Darby . . .
~ Dewey Corley
Dewey and Gigi Corley are clients of LSU SVM’s
Veterinary Teaching Hospital and Clinics
who have chosen to express their gratitude in a
very meaningful and lasting way. Using the private
foundation, the Chaparral Foundation, the Corleys
established a scholarship in the names of their local
veterinarians, Dr. Steven Everson (LSU SVM 1979) and
his son, Dr. Brad Everson (LSU SVM 2005).
In December 2008, Darby, their 11-year-old chocolate
lab, was bleeding internally. Darby’s veterinarians, the
Eversons, performed emergency surgery to stop the
bleeding and immediately referred the Corleys to LSU
SVM. Darby was admitted the next day and stayed
nearly two weeks while she underwent extensive
surgery and treatment for cancer of the adrenal gland
and kidney.
“My wife and I were genuinely impressed, not only with
the extraordinary medical care and attention that Darby
received, but also with the comforting care that we,
the worried owners, were given,” said Dewey. “Before
we knew what the outcome would be for Darby, we
decided we wanted to do something to express our
deep appreciation to all of those who had helped us
during this difficult time. Accordingly, it has been our
sincere privilege to pledge $100,000 to LSU SVM to
establish the ‘Dr. Steve Everson and Dr. Brad Everson
Honorary Endowed Scholarship,’” he said.
“As Gigi and I neared the end of our vacation in
Colorado this past summer,” Dewey continued,
“perhaps what brought us the most joy was seeing the
big smile on Darby’s face as she joined us hiking and
fishing, constantly chasing the ever-present chipmunks
and squirrels. Were it not for the doctors and staff of the
LSU School of Veterinary Medicine, that ‘bonus time’
with Darby would not have been possible.”
“We support other charitable and educational
organizations, but we can truly say that there is
not another organization about which we are more
passionate. The LSU School of Veterinary Medicine
truly is an undiscovered jewel that deserves the utmost
support.” ■
Ken Windheim, a resident of Arlington, Virginia, is
one of LSU SVM’s major donors and a devoted
dog owner who understands the importance and depth
of the human-animal bond.
much was being done for abandoned and distressed
animals, and I thought this was the best possible way to
that has lasted seven years.”
He sums up his inspiration to remain an LSU SVM
donor in the years since Katrina this way: “Animals
don’t stage charity events and aren’t high profile,
but this does not mean they should be overlooked.”
He added, “In the same vein, most veterinarians
are selfless. They work long, hard hours without the
promise of great remuneration. Their efforts should be
supported at every level.” ■
Like so many others, Ken’s concern for animals
affected by Hurricane Katrina triggered his desire to
~ Leia Feinberg
Being a student at LSU SVM is intense—it takes
commitment, passion, and focus—and it is
expensive. Because veterinary students are in class up
to 23 hours per week, working during the school year
is not feasible. And when graduation arrives, many of
our new graduates are faced with a significant debt
load from student loans. Fortunately, LSU SVM has 20
endowed scholarships that are awarded each year to
deserving individuals. Because of generous gifts from
our donors, in 2009 Dean Peter F. Haynes was able to
supplement these scholarships so that each student
recipient received at least a $2,000 award from LSU
SVM’s Annual Fund.
The scholarships are making a difference to our
students. “It’s hard to put into words how important
scholarships are to my classmates and me,” said Leia
Feinberg (Class of 2010), who received the Peri Tümay,
DVM, Memorial Fellowship and the Wildlife Hospital
of Louisiana Award. “Going to veterinary school
is extremely expensive,” Leia said, “and the price
continues to climb each semester. Externships and
internship applications are just a few more expenses
that keep adding on to our mounting debt. If it wasn’t
for the scholarship that I received, I may not have been
able to participate in any externships. These types of
experiences are so vital to helping create well rounding
veterinarians. The financial support of scholarships is
absolutely crucial to our education and achieving our
career goals.”
“It is vital that we provide educational support for these
students, who will graduate and become fundamental
members of the community,” adds Dean Haynes. “It is
with the commitment of our alumni and private citizens
who donate to higher education that we are able to
support our students in this way.”
With continued support from future gifts to the Annual
Fund (Advance Veterinary Medicine Fund), this initiative
will be maintained and the awards increased. The goal
is to build up Annual Fund gifts from alumni and friends
so that in the near future each endowed scholarship is
supplemented with a $5,000 annual award, a reflection
of the SVM’s commitment to excellence. ■
Cultivating Excellence . . .
Dr. Allison Foil, a 1998 graduate of LSU SVM, is
a horse enthusiast. In addition to owning and
racing horses, she also is the owner and practicing
veterinarian at Foil Equine and Associates in Ocala,
Florida, where she specializes in equine sports
medicine.
The first thing I think of when I want to donate
money is the Vet School . . .
~ Dr. Allison Foil
Allison is among the numerous alumni who are
motivated to give back to their alma mater. She
recently helped out in a big way by providing funding
for the custom-made table needed to allow clinicians
to utilize LSU SVM’s Computed Tomography (CT) unit
for equine patients. The 16-slice CT scanner is so fast
that the skull or extremity can be examined in less
than 30 seconds, reducing anesthesia time. With the
addition of this table, LSU is only one of a few facilities
in the United States with this type of diagnostic imaging
technology for horses.
“The first thing I think of when I want to donate money
is the Vet School,” Allison said, “and I’m glad y’all
came up with the CT table idea because I wanted my
donation to apply to something that I do.”
Baton Rouge is home and she comes back to LSU
SVM for a visit now and then. “It was really neat to
go back last summer and tour the School. It felt and
seemed the same as it did 10 years ago. And I’m
looking forward to coming back and seeing the table the
next time I’m there.”
Allison believes in supporting LSU SVM because of
what the School provided for her. “I owe a lot to LSU for
my education,” she said. “I got a great foundation, and
the faculty really supported me when I was applying for
my large animal internship. If I could, I would give more
to raise their salaries.” ■
Cultivating Excellence . . .
Private support makes the
difference between mediocrity
and excellence. LSU SVM must
continue to excel.
~ Dr. William Jenkins
Dr. William (Bill) Jenkins, former LSU SVM Dean
and LSU President Emeritus, and his wife, Peggy,
are devoted volunteers who give generously of their
time to support the School in general and the Wildlife
Hospital of Louisiana in particular. Explaining his
passion for animals, Bill said, “From early childhood,
I wanted to be a veterinarian. I grew up on a farm,
so I’ve been around animals all my life. I’m originally
from South Africa, and, of course, they have such an
amazing variety of wild animals there—I think my great
love for wildlife was just…instinctive,” he said. “It’s
always been there.”
Bill had a long and extraordinary career with LSU
beginning with his taking the reins of LSU SVM in
1988. He was named LSU’s Executive Vice-Chancellor
and Provost in 1993, Chancellor of LSU in 1996, and
President of the LSU System in 1999. Retired at last,
Bill and Peggy now promote and support LSU SVM
through working with volunteer associations, mentoring
volunteers, and introducing the School to their many
friends.
Dr. Jenkins with Provost Astrid Merget and Dean Peter
Through Volunteering
“The Veterinary School is critically important to the
citizens of Louisiana,” Bill said, “but it goes beyond that.
LSU SVM is one of only 28 veterinary schools in the
United States—not only does it serve the city of Baton
Rouge and the state of Louisiana, it serves the nation.”
His many years spent in administration have made
Bill acutely aware of the challenges facing the School
of Veterinary Medicine and, indeed, every facet of
a public university such as LSU. “It makes a strong
statement for the state that we have such a fine and
well-recognized school, but to maintain our position will
require resources that, without private support, we won’t
have. Private support,” he said emphatically, “makes
the difference between mediocrity and excellence. LSU
SVM must continue to excel.” ■
