Private support makes the
difference between mediocrity
and excellence. LSU SVM must
continue to excel.

Dr. William (Bill) Jenkins, former LSU SVM Dean
and LSU President Emeritus, and his wife, Peggy,
are devoted volunteers who give generously of their
time to support the School in general and the Wildlife
Hospital of Louisiana in particular. Explaining his
passion for animals, Bill said, “From early childhood,
I wanted to be a veterinarian. I grew up on a farm,
so I’ve been around animals all my life. I’m originally
from South Africa, and, of course, they have such an
amazing variety of wild animals there—I think my great
love for wildlife was just…instinctive,” he said. “It’s
always been there.”
Bill had a long and extraordinary career with LSU
beginning with his taking the reins of LSU SVM in
1988. He was named LSU’s Executive Vice-Chancellor
and Provost in 1993, Chancellor of LSU in 1996, and
President of the LSU System in 1999. Retired at last,
Bill and Peggy now promote and support LSU SVM
through working with volunteer associations, mentoring
volunteers, and introducing the School to their many
friends.
