DECEMBER STUDENT & ADVISORY GROUP CHARRETTES

Charrette Groups

• Graduate Students (~ 22)

• UGBC (~ 100)

• UG Cross-Section (~ 65)

• Faculty + Staff 1 (~ 23)

• Faculty + Staff 2 (~ 45)

• Faculty + Staff 3 (~ 50)

Total: ~ 310 participants

Charrette Process

Presentation: principles,

program, alternatives

Division into 4 groups: each

group evaluates the pros and

cons of one alternative

Groups report back to the

audience

Discussion around the model

General Consensus

• Realign St. Thomas More Drive

• No new buildings on Linden Lane

• Diagonal linkage within and

between campus districts

important: symbolic and physical

• Everything should be integrated

(including uses at Newton)

• Center Comm. Ave platform seen

as a positive

Challenges

• Living by Class?

• Sustainable Design?

• Avoiding fragmentation

• Creating uses on Brighton that are part

of day-to-day use for the campus

• Will parking and transportation work?

• Why couldn't Brighton be used for more

core uses?

• No reason for faculty to go to lower

campus (or Brighton campus)

• How do we mix academic with social?

Graduate Student Group

• Prefer Alternative B-2

• Shuttle system expanded to

Brighton

• Another site for graduate

housing

• Question: will UGs walk

through the graduate enclave

to reach the playfields?

• 21 Campanella feels isolated

as an academic building

UG Student Groups

• Shea Field housing seems isolated

(site could work if more housing there)

• Want one building for campus center

• Like fieldhouse, campus center, rec

center together; also like fieldhouse on

Brighton

• Want senior housing to reflect culture

of independence now found in the

Mods

• Want performance space (music and

drama) integrated with the campus

center

• Want plan to reflect other primary

Middle-to-Lower Campus connections

UG Student Groups

• Beacon Street difficult to cross:

concerned about how connected

Centers, Campus School would feel

• Tailgating, tailgating, tailgating…

• Want a space for outdoor events that

doesn’t feel as LARGE as the

Dustbowl or as SMALL as the Quad

• Need more locations for student art

• Fewer comments than anticipated

about Brighton land: perceptually,

seems out of the realm of current

thinking/experience

Advisory Groups

• Circulation:

– Unsure as to whether the amount of

pedestrian/vehicular conflict is a

problem on Lower Campus, but liked

Alt C’s car-free zone

– Proposed parking is perceptually

distant from the intended concentration

on the Middle Campus; consider shuttle

service to parking

• Any building occupying the More

Hall site needs to be carefully

designed and sighted to be an

appropriate College “beacon”

Advisory Groups

• East-west schemes need to link to

a diagonal

• Should be places for students of

different years to mix

• Need a faculty/staff dining venue

on Middle Campus
