welcome!

Summer Happenings

Summer 2011 promises to be a fun time at the library

with exciting programs for all ages. Enjoy a musical

journey through Latin America, travel the world and

participate in an Aussie adventure, or visit the Royal

Court as part of the One World, Many Stories summer

reading program. Harry Potter returns with a Care of

Magical Creatures Class, part of the LEAP: Science is

Fun! Learn Explore and Play program for grades 3-8.

Teens will enjoy the Wild About Harry Potter program at

the Aberdeen Branch.

Want to know more about your family tree? Check out

the Genealogy programs offered by the Whiteford and

Fallston Branches. Jennifer Vido, local author, editor and

Library Board Trustee, shares her favorite reads on page 15 and Newbery Honor

winner, Jane Conly, will be visiting the Whiteford library to discuss her newest

children’s book, Murder Afloat.

The Library has offered a summer reading program for children and teens for many

years. A recent study published by the Dominican University (IL) in partnership with

the Johns Hopkins University Center documents that students who participate in a

public library summer reading program score higher on reading achievement tests

at the beginning of the school year than those students who do not participate. In

addition, parents reported that their children were well prepared for school in the

fall and read more confidently. Last summer more than 18,000 children participated

in the summer reading program and we are very appreciative of the Library

Foundation and the many sponsors who have generously supported the program.

Please visit this year’s sponsors, featured on page 4, and thank them for their

generosity and commitment to the community.

The library is a wonderful place to visit any time of the year and is a very special

place during the summer. You will be amazed, intrigued and entertained!

Mary Hastler, Director

Coming later this summer, customers will

be able to participate in a technology

smorgasbord at Harford County Public

Library (HCPL). Each branch will have a

set of devices capable of downloading

eBooks including an iPod, iPad, Nook, and

a laptop. The equipment will be set up so

that customers can replicate the download

process that they experience at home.

HCPL has seen an increased demand in

eBook downloads. Between March 2010

and March 2011, there was a 480% increase

in eBook downloads with over 1,300 being

downloaded in March of this year alone.

According to a study from the Association

of American Publishers, eBook sales

totaled $90.3 million in February, up 202%

compared to the same month a year earlier.

This industry sales result puts eBooks

above the sales of other formats including

paperbacks and hard covers. This is the

first time eBooks have out-sold traditional

publishing formats.

There are many reasons why eReaders are

so popular. Improvements in technology

have made them easier to read, handle

and navigate. Today’s eReaders are lighter

and smaller and the screen and lighting

resolution has greatly improved. At HCPL

you can get your eBooks for free and new

titles are always being added.

Special features make the eReader

experience even more rewarding. One

feature is text-to-speech capabilities. For

devices that have this feature, users can

listen to their eBook while the device reads

it aloud. Another enticing feature is the

ability to zoom in on pages and text and

increase the size of the font.

Visit your local branch later this summer to

have an eBook experience @ your library!

Trends...

A column about what is new &

happening in the world of books,

gaming, movies & music.

list

Are angels the new vampires, werewolves,

and zombies? Have you noticed a trend

in the books you are reading? Vamps and

weres are only the tip of the iceberg when

it comes to what is hot in young adult

books. Some other trends: dystopian, steam

punk, multiple viewpoints, and dead teens.

Looking for the latest trend? Try Kindred

by Tammar Stein. Miriam is a freshman

at college when her spring break plans

are cancelled and she is stuck on campus.

While on campus, she has

a frightening visit from the

archangel Raphael. God and

Raphael enlist her help to

protect a classmate. When

her twin brother, Moses,

comes to visit her, he tells

her that he has contact with

the underworld. Miriam and

Moses are pitted against

one another in the age old

battle of good versus evil.

Travel…

Have you ever wanted to travel to another

country and speak the language? I plan

to learn the language of my mother’s

homeland, Italy, before I venture across the

sea! I learned Spanish and French in high

school but now I am going to use Mango

Languages to learn Italian. Mango is an

online language-learning system you can

access for free through the library website

at hcplonline.org/research/language.

Currently, there are over 30 languages to

choose from like Japanese, German,

Russian and of course Italian!

A quirky, comical

read set in Boston

and Atlanta about

a home stager who

must fix up her own

life instead of the

neighbors’ houses.

Included in the

novel are decorating

tips and even paint

recommendations.

Perfect story for all

those DIY remodelers.

“All I ever wanted in life

was true love, a set of

copper cookware, and

the perfect recipe for

Red Velvet Cake. The last

thing I wanted was to

end up on Charleston’s

six o’clock news, accused

of murder and a slew of

other crimes.”

Need I say more? The

most hilarious book

I have read in a very

long time.

Truly one of my most

favorite authors.

Her new release is

a poignant tale of a

woman’s journey to

find hope and healing.

Set on the Gulf

Coast, White draws

the reader in with her

spell-binding prose.

Best-known as a

frequent contributor to

Real Simple, Glamour,

and Redbook, Jio’s

debut novel proves

that she is an author

on the rise. An

unforgettable and

enchanting story of a

bestselling author who

finds a diary dated

back to 1943 and

becomes intertwined

with the anonymous

woman from the past.

One of my first Jen’s

Jewels interviewees,

her books have been

optioned for film by

Reese Witherspoon

and Jennifer Aniston.

Her latest pageturning

novel is

about a woman who

wonders if she said

yes to the right man.
