at our Relay For Life event. Simple white Luminaria bags are transformed
and illuminated after dark. Each one is personalized with
the name, photo, message or drawing in memory or honor of a
friend or loved one who has been affected by cancer. Each luminaria
candle represents a person. They are our mothers, fathers,
sisters, brothers, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, friends, coworkers
and so much more! As the sun sets, luminaria lining the track
illuminate the night and a hush falls over the event that had been
filled with the sounds of celebration. Relay For Life participants,
survivors and caregivers then gather together for the Luminaria
Ceremony to remember loved ones lost to cancer and to honor
those who have battled the disease. Our Stanwood/Camano Luminaria
Ceremony is at 10pm at the Stanwood High School Track. All
members of the community are invited to attend and are encouraged
to make bags of their own. Each bag is a suggested donation
of $5, and the money raised for Luminaria goes back to help save
lives and find a cure for cancer. For more info: Terri, 360-629-2604.
Wisdom & Wit
Detroit Resurgence on the South End
By Jack Archibald
“Down at the weekly South End Diner Vintage Auto Ad Hoc
Meeting, Hudson Bob, one of the old car guyz piped up in dual
exhaust mode how he’d seen a George Will opinion piece the
day before. Politics is usually about as popular as debating
whether each others’ wives are still attractive, so ordinarily the
talk revolves from tools to Chevys to the next road trip to the
latest obituary, both car and people. Hudson Bob was pounding
his cup of joe for emphasis and his place mat looked like the
garage floor where 4 Finger Fred kept his 1956 Studebaker with
the leaky oil pan.
“The man says we’re done already with electric cars! Only the
tree huggers were buying them and that was before they started
spontaneously combustin. SUV’s are back, he says” The old
car guyz aren’t real big on electrics. Hell, the old car guyz don’t
even like cars with more than 6 volt batteries and don’t get them
started on electronics or you’ll have Big Larry coming out from
behind the grill waving a spatula like it was a Tazer to quiet them
down so the other customers, meaning me, might enjoy their
runny eggs and cold toast. “George Will says we got so much oil
and gas right now we could all drive semi’s.”
Most of us down at the tree hugging South End drive old beaters,
not quite vintage, just sputtering, backfiring, perforated
muffler, gas guzzling jalopies waiting to die and end up in
Hudson Bob’s spotless shop with the heated floor and the hydraulic
lift and every tool SnapOn ever made. Or out back up
on blocks in the blackberry and nettle cemeteries. None of us, I
notice, have oil rigs pumping crude 24/7. But we got plenty of
tidal potential, some solar, gutter hydro, lots of wind, especially
me, blowhard extraordinaire, and so I wondered Out Loud since
the Diner is sort of half prayer meeting and half town hall and a
third AA, why on God’s green earth we would root for the Saudis
and hope the electric car companies – the American electric car
companies – catch fire and go broke.
About half an hour later – after Big Larry had broken up the riot
and deputy Pringle with the Island County Sheriff’s office had
interrupted his donut break – we separated and went to our
separate corners. The judges, Brenda and Anita, the morning
waitresses, gave them a technical knockout and I slunk out to
my old Toyota pickup, hoping at best to catch a tailwind on the
long drive home on Loser Highway. Mostly I drove with my tail
between my legs. I’m thinking of buying a Prius and going back
next meeting. Nobody’s gonna accuse me of learning any lessons
this late in life.”
Sort of Clear Communications
“There have been some miscommunications going on around here
and it’s time we attended to them. We know what Snickers means
when he barks at the door. Just check which side he’s on and get
him to the other, thanks. Or when he barks at 2 a.m. and insists
on going down to check on the ducks and chickens. He’s probably
heard they were going to a party over at the neighbor’s coop and
he needs to do a bed check. We think it means there’s a varmit
down there and so slipping on the boots we grab a flashlight and
go to chase it off. But that dandy little motion detector that lets us
know when you come by the stand is starting to go off more often
than people are present. It’s taken some research and waiting, but
we finally caught the culprit in the act. Across the road and on the
other side of the ditch from our little yellow and white bakery and
produce stand is a row of trees. There is tall grass in the ditch, filled
with seeds and bugs apparently. A very handsome robin is now living
in one of those trees and drops down frequently to the buffet
at his feet. Then he flies up with a load of shrimp or crab legs or pie
for the kids. Then back down to get some napkins. Back up to show
the young ones how to use them. Then he has to take the trash out.
And every time, you guessed it, he’s triggering the alarm. We drop
what we’re doing and hustle out to help someone only to be met
by the still, calm, quiet of an empty country road sweetened by a
soft birdsong. He’s kind of human, that robin. Sending a signal he
knows nothing about which tells folks something that is not true.
We know the signal means empty stomachs are at the stand. He
just hears a distant bell and figures it means chow’s ready. How often
have we done that? How often have we sent a signal we didn’t
know we’d sent and it causes high blood pressure and alarm? Cutting
someone off on the highway and not realizing we had done it.
Or blinking to get some dust out of our eye and someone thinks
we’ve winked at them. The ducks do it too. Quackers will yell at
the others to find where they’ve wandered off to and we think she’s
reporting a coyote on the radar when all she wants is company. But
at the end of the day, we have to set aside these unintentional messages,
sort them out and realize that they are just part of the price
we pay for living in community, whether it is a community of chickens
or chow hounds or birds being good parents. And every now
and then, the alarm actually does find a human to report on. And
then we are happily drawn into the community we know and love
and all is well once again. – Happy Hoeing, Jon and Elaine.
Small Wonders
By Christine Longdon
Just South of Cama when you follow the shoreline, wonders await
you a treasure you will find.
Birds, trees, saltwater, and whales- driftwood, sand, and tons of
seashells.
They all have their purpose and need to stay, so others can enjoy
them another day.
If you lift up a rock, it’s a home you will find, please put it back
gently- be courteous and kind.
It’s a house to shore critters, barnacles, crabs, chitons, and limpets
too. How would you feel if this happened to you?
Ron Hinshaw – Steel Sculptor
Ron is a self taught artist with an extensive background in ornamental
metalwork. A love for the outdoors and wildlife is expressed
in his chosen medium of steel plate and heat. Ron creates a drawing
that is transferred to the steel plate. The piece is cut by hand
using an acetylene torch. Then each piece is carefully detailed and
polished with a small hand held grinder. Upon completion of the
grinding, using only the heat of the torch, each piece is colored
achieving a range of colors from subtle golds to rich browns and
on through vibrant purples and blues. Once the coloring is completed,
each piece is welded together, some pieces made up of as
high as 100 separate pieces of detailed steel. Working professionally
since 1982, Ron feels that he is very fortunate to have found a
way to express himself through his art and to be able to support his
family, doing something he truly loves. Ron’s work is very unique
and can be found in many galleries throughout the Western United
States. His work is known Nationally and Internationally and can be
found in private collections in Beverly Hills, Chicago, New York, San
Francisco, India, Scotland, Japan, China & Hawaii.
“Herons and the people who love them”
By Val Schroeder, Member, Whidbey Camano Land Trust
“What a thrill it is to live where people will rally to save land just for
the wildlife. A place where supporters, county and state governments,
and the Whidbey Camano Land Trust joined forces to create
the 31-acre Davis Slough Heronry. What makes the Davis Slough
Heronry special is that I can’t go there. Although it took persuasion
to keep us humans out, it worked, and that makes me happy and
relieved. The herons need space, and protecting that land gives
other wildlife space, too. Herons aren’t recluses in their heronry.
They’ve scolded me many times as I hike the beach, walk the pathway
to my home, and even when I turn on the lights. With deep,
hoarse croaks, herons inform me of my errors as they slowly unfold
their wings, take a step, and lift off across the water. Sometimes I’m
lucky and I’m able to walk by one on the beach. It’s a personal challenge
to creep past and not disturb it as it stalks its prey. After I’ve
passed, I slowly turn to see it snatch a fish and, as I watch it position
its catch and swallow it, I wonder how long it will take for that
bulge in its neck to disappear. What a stately creature, standing tall
with plumes blowing in the wind. At low tide, I’ve seen as many as
87 herons foraging in Skagit Bay. At high tide, I’ve counted 20 or
so roosting in the trees. Some evenings, I start to walk the beach,
but think better of it and head back home, not wanting a scolding
from the herons foraging along the water’s edge. Who am I to disturb
them? Of all my heron experiences, my favorite is seeing them
soar. Every once in awhile, when the winds are right, I watch gulls
and eagles playing in the currents and, to my surprise, see a heron
among them. What thrills me even more is that enough people
cared. Herons do have a place of their own on Camano Island, but
they come out to join us morning, noon, and night.”
Pruning for Views
The most beautiful views in Washington State can be found on
or near the Puget Sound shoreline. Magnificent vistas of water,
beaches and mountains are enhanced by stunning sunrises and
brilliant sunsets. Maintaining these views is the chief reason cited
for cutting, topping and pruning trees on or near the shoreline.
Some of these methods, however, may create bigger problems
than they solve. This newsletter will address some of those problems,
and alternatives to some of the more drastic measures taken
by homeowners in order to maintain their views. It also discusses
the danger of dumping tree limbs, other trimmings, and grass
over the bluff or onto the beach, and alternative practices. Why
You Should Not “Top” Your Trees: One of the main reasons not
to cut trees near a bluff property is that the trees help stabilize
the bluffs. Trees hold large amounts of water that may otherwise
flow down the face of the slope. Roots hold sand and soil in place.
These both help minimize the effects of erosion and the potential
for slides. Instead of cutting trees, property owners may look to
the alternative of “topping” the trees, which can be accomplished
by hiring anyone with a ladder and chainsaw. Unlike trained arborists,
some who top trees have little knowledge or experience, and
often cause significant damage. An increasing number of towns
and cities across the United States are banning tree topping or
are requiring permits to do so. Besides being ugly, a topped tree
is stressed. Large wounds from improper pruning can expose
heartwood and sapwood, which attracts insects and diseases. The
leafy crown of a tree accounts for up to 30% of its energy production,
and topping can starve the tree. Latent buds are activated
as a defense mechanism, and multiple shoots pop up as quickly
as possible below each cut in an effort to regain the lost energy.
The shoots can reach the previous height within two years, requiring
continuous topping and associated dangers. Tree canopies
serve to protect the underlying branches and trunk from sunburn,
which can lead to bark splitting and cankers. Tree canopies also
shade the ground below. When exposed to light, the ground and
bluffs are now open to invasion by Himalayan blackberries, Scotch
broom, English ivy, and other non-native species. These invaders
crowd out native species, helping to destabilize the bluff.
Firefighter Cadets Learning Skills
AND Collegiality
When Camano Island Fire and Rescue Firefighter Bobbi Guadamuz
realized the cadet program he once participated in as a
Stanwood High School student no longer existed, he did something
about it. The program was reinstituted this year, to the
delight of the 19 students involved. The students arrive at the
training through a program operated in partnership between the
Stanwood-Camano School District and CIFR. “I have seen these
students becoming very supportive of each other and collegial,”
said Stanwood High’s director of career and technical education,
Kevin Plambeck. “That’s not just becoming friends; that’s learning
employability skills, leadership skills, and working with each
other.” Senior Dylan Lowery says the experience is motivating him.
“There’s no doubt about it: I am going to make it a career.” CIFR
Chief Mike Ganz said, “they are getting some exposure beyond
the classroom and some hands on skills.” Other firefighters in the
district are also helping out. Many have taken on training roles
when they’re off-duty, giving the students a real appreciation for
the firefighters and for the work they do. Photo: Back Row left to
Stanwood Dominates State History Day!
Congratulations to the Stanwood High School History Day
team who dominated at last weekend’s State History contest
in Bellevue. Maggie Phillips, Sean Dolan, Marlee Raible, Emily
Najar and Madalyn Schei completed a “Stanwood shutout” in
the exhibit category with the top two group exhibits qualifying
to head to Nationals this June in Washington DC. Amanda Bye
Livingston Bay Recognized as Important
Shorebird Site!
The Greater Skagit/Stillaguamish Delta, which includes Livingston
Bay, has been named a Site of Regional Importance by the
Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network (WHSRN).
This is huge news! There are only two other sites in Washington.
Ruth Milner, District Wildlife Biologist for the WA Department of
Fish and Wildlife, announced the news yesterday saying, “That
helps all of us see how our dedication to protecting our local
places contributes in a concrete way to global conservation.”
Ruth, the Land Trust, and other partners in the area worked
for years to ensure the environmental health of the wetlands
and other key habitats in the area. Their efforts were rewarded
with this international designation. Shorebirds rely on finding
healthy, productive sites all along the west coast as they undertake
very long migrations to breed near the arctic and winter
in friendlier climates far to the south. So, what may look like
a desert of mud when the tide at Port Susan Bay goes out is,
in fact, a sensitive ecosystem teeming with life and providing
nourishment and rest to at least 40,000 birds in any given year.
Multiple Awards for “Secrets”
Local authors and former residents of Arlington, Dr. Gary and Robbie
Holz, have been honored with two prestigious national awards.
Journey to the Heart: Secrets of Aboriginal Healing, the book the
couple co-authored, is a 2012 Nautilus Silver Medal award winner
and a finalist for the ForeWord Review 2011 Book of the Year Award.
“I’m so pumped, actually in tears,” Robbie Holz says. “Gary’s intention,
and my intention, has always been to help as many people as
we possibly could in their quest for wellness,” says Holz of herself
and her late husband. “This book is proving a great vehicle for that
because it’s so simple and clear, a very easy manual.” The remote
Aboriginal tribe featured in the book requested that Dr. Holz bring
their 40,000 year-old healing principles to the Western world. The
book tells the true story of Dr. Gary Holz’s journey to a remote aboriginal
village in the Outback of Australia to seek healing for progressive
MS. He arrived in Australia a quadriplegic, hardly able to
roll his wheelchair. He returned home a master of his own life, with
returned feeling in his once-numb body and able to clumsily walk
down the airplane aisle. Dr. Holz began as a skeptical scientist. In
his startlingly honest and sometimes humorous voice, the book
relates the simple healing process taught by two aboriginal healers,
Rose and Ray, who helped Dr. Holz realize that the mind, body
and spirit have always been inseparably connected, that healing
is an inside job, and that the universe is providing us more help
than we can possibly imagine. Marilyn McGuire, a Nautilus spokeswoman,
says the book has been honored for, “...stimulating the
imagination and offering the reader new possibilities for a better
life.” “Your book stood out among the more than 700 publishers
and 1200 entered titles in this year’s awards program,” says Kimber
Bilby of the ForeWord Review. “Our judges [say] this year’s titles are
the best they’ve seen!” The judges at ForeWord are distinguished
librarians and booksellers. “It can be hard for independently published
books to get into libraries and bookstores,” says Robbie Holz.
“I think these awards will really help that happen from coast to
coast. And the book has been selling out. The local bookstores are
very excited.” Secrets of Aboriginal Healing is for sale in your local
bookstore, Amazon.com and Barnesandnoble.com.
Sno-Isle Libraries’ 50th Celebration –
Camano Island Library Pilot Project’s
5th Celebration!
Fifty years ago, the world was at our doorstep, celebrating the
1962 Seattle World’s Fair and brimming with space age optimism.
Boeing was flying high. Seattle appeared to be the capital of the
world. And the 21st Century was a science fiction vision of wonder
and anticipation. In the midst of that excitement and confidence,
residents in Snohomish and Island County took a big leap
into the future by unifying two county rural library districts into
Sno-Isle Libraries. Fifty years later, technology has evolved and
many customer needs have changed. Yet, our two-county library
district continues to be an essential community doorway to reading,
resources and lifelong learning, as well as a center for people,
ideas and culture. So we’re celebrating the millions of children and
adults, over the past 50 years, who’ve benefitted from library early
learning efforts for children and lifelong learning materials and
classes for adults. And we invite you to celebrate with us. Imagine
how your children, grandchildren and community will benefit as
Sno-Isle Libraries provides access to information, learning, entertainment,
recreation, economic regeneration and promotes public
dialogue opportunities, over the next 50 years. Our Camano Island
Library Pilot Project is celebrating its 5th year at Terry’s Corner on
June 16 from 11:00-2:00. We’ll have refreshments and will be placing
a time capsule so please join us. Let’s make sure our library becomes
a permanent fixture on Camano!
FLAG DAY
FACT:
April 25, 1976:
Chicago Cubs
outfielder
Rick Monday
snatches a U.S.
flag, saving it
from protesters
trying to
burn it on the
field at Dodger
Stadium.
Health and Animals
“I have raised labs most of my life, volunteered and do fund raising
for Humane Societies. My last beautiful boy died in 2000 and I
vowed I would get an older dog who needed good parents. There
are so many animals that are left at shelters (we have wonderful
ones in our area) that make the best friends and companions. Bob
and I got our big boy, Duke, at Noah and are blessed everyday with
his calm presence. People and animals have a long history of living
together and bonding. One of the oldest discoveries about
this bond was documented a few years ago. Found in Israel was a
12,000-year-old human skeleton buried with its hand resting on the
skeleton of a 6-month-old wolf pup. One of the largest studies in
this field suggests that four-legged friends can help to improve our
cardiovascular health. This study looked at 421 adults who’d suffered
heart attacks. A year later, the scientists found animal owners
were significantly more likely to still be alive than were those who
did not own animal; regardless of the severity of the heart attack.
Another study looked at 240 married couples. Those who owned
a pet (any kind of pet) were found to have lower heart rates and
blood pressure, whether at rest or when undergoing stressful tests,
than those without pets. Look into getting an animal, first read and
educate yourself about the work of being a pet owner. The Snowgoose
Bookstore and our libraries are excellent resources. It is an
honor to have an animal but also a big responsibility. The joy and
love that animals bring into my life is a great gift. www.webmd.
FLAG DAY
FLAG DAY
FACT:
The flag
weather is bad,
except when an
all-weather flag
FLAG etiquette:
• The flag should never be displayed with the union down, except
as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or
property.
• The flag should never have placed upon it, nor on any part of it,
nor attached to it any mark, insignia, letter, word, figure, design,
• Advertising signs should not be fastened to a staff or halyard
from which the flag is flown.
