Sunrise on a summer’s morning. The first rays glisten
on the waves of the Weser river and the historical ships
creak quietly in their moorings. The Schlachte Embankment
is still deserted. But it will all be brought to life in
a few hours when the first guests arrive for breakfast.
In the evenings, lights from the bars and lanterns strung
along the boats’ pontoons will illuminate the bustle on
the banks of the Weser.
The boats on the Weser set out on journeys near and
far. Down the river, towards Überseestadt. Formerly
a district of shipyards filled with vessels of all sizes, it
is now becoming a hub for art and culture. The past
is brought to life at the Speicher XI Harbour Museum,
with stories of seafaring and restless spirits, new
beginnings and hope.
In the heat of the day, the sun reflects off the windows
of the ornately decorated buildings. The figures on the
façade of Bremen’s historical town hall symbolise times
long gone. The stories captured in stone around the
old market square remain vivid. The Bremen Town
Musicians tell of adventurous journeys, and the
giant Roland – the city’s very own ‘statue of liberty’ –
watches over the people below with just a hint of a
smile on his face.
Stirring melodies played on an accordion float across
the square. A street musician stands at the entrance
to the delightful and quaint Böttcherstrasse shopping
area, inviting visitors to take a trip back in time.
The countdown has started: three … two … one …
lift off! The heart beats faster. The dream of going into
space draws closer. How do astronauts actually manage
to sleep? A tour through the International Space Station
brings science to life. Here at the laboratory in Bremen,
engineers are working on cutting-edge technology for
space travel.
Leaving behind the far corners of space, we travel
to the Earth’s core. Volcanoes spew magma, and a
submersible explores the depths of the sea. Oceans,
ice caps, rain forests and deserts – the various faces
of our planet are all on show at Universum Bremen.
Visit Bremen for hands-on science and worlds of
discovery.
Barely has the sun disappeared below the horizon and
a new life emerges – full of excitement, glittering lights,
music and pulsating rhythms. Daredevil cyclists fly
round in a blur during the Six-Day Race.
In the theatre, great emotions move the audience
to tears, while the tunes of the great orchestra pull
at the heartstrings. Bremen certainly lives up to its
musical reputation. Drums beating out samba rhythms
in February. Shakespeare in the Park. Spice sellers,
golden angels at Christmastide and festively lit ships
along the riverbank. Every day brings a new experience.
Another adventure. More amazement.
Bremen town hall and the Roland statue – World Heritage
The town hall and the Roland statue on the market square are on the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites. The importance of the
town hall is demonstrated by the distinctive style of its architecture, known as Weser Renaissance, which was prominent in north
Germany in the late Renaissance period. Bremen’s Roland is one of the oldest and most impressive of the Roland statues, which were
erected in Germany during the Middle Ages as symbols of liberty and trading rights. Together, the town hall and the Roland statue
bear testimony to the history of the Free City Republic of Bremen, from the 9th century through to the present day.
In 2010, we trialled an
electric minibus tour,
enabling you to get to
know the old town using
this comfortable and environmentally
friendly form
of transport. Information
about Bremen is communicated
be offered again from April
