Per<strong>for</strong>mance Steps<br />
(3) Order the subject to turn around and drop to his/her knees.<br />
(4) Search the back of the subject's hands <strong>for</strong> evidence of weapons.<br />
(5) Direct the subject to lie on his/her stomach, extend his/her arms<br />
straight out to the sides with the palms up, and place his/her <strong>for</strong>ehead on the<br />
ground.<br />
(6) Tell the subject to spread his/her legs as far as possible, turn<br />
his/her feet outward, and keep his/her heels in contact with the ground.<br />
Note: Positioning the subject as described is dependent upon the subject following your<br />
directions. If the subject refuses, you may have to take his/her to the ground using physical<br />
<strong>for</strong>ce or whatever alternate use of <strong>for</strong>ce is authorized by your PMO.<br />
b. Ensure that the assistant, if available, is in front of and to one side of<br />
the subject, opposite the side that is to be searched first.<br />
c. Apply the handcuffs.<br />
(1) Approach the front of the subject at about a 45-degree angle.<br />
(2) Squat and place your knee that is nearest the subject between<br />
his/her shoulder blades.<br />
(3) Direct the subject to put the arm nearest you, behind him/her, with<br />
the palm facing up.<br />
(4) Grasp the subject's hand in a handshake hold and put the first<br />
handcuff on it.<br />
(5) Hold the handcuff chain along with the belt or waistband of the<br />
subject's trousers, direct the subject to put his/her other hand behind him/her, with<br />
the palm facing out, and apply the other handcuff.<br />
d. Search the subject.<br />
Note: Refer to the note of step 1 in reference to searching members of the opposite sex.<br />
(1) Hold the chain between the handcuffs, and lift the subject's arms a<br />
little. Search the area in the small of the back and any area the subject can reach.<br />
Release the chain and stand.<br />
(2) Move to the area of the subject's waist and face the subject's head.<br />
Squat, but do not rest your knee on the ground or on the subject. Pivot, if required<br />
to conduct the rest of the search.<br />
(3) Remove the subject's headgear.<br />
(a) Bend the seams be<strong>for</strong>e crushing to determine if razor blades<br />
or similar devices are hidden.<br />
(b) Place the headgear on the floor or ground.<br />
(4) Search the subject's head and hair.<br />
(5) Search the subject from fingers to shoulders. Search the collar and<br />
neck area (pull any neckwear to the subject's back), and remove anything that<br />
could be used as a weapon.<br />
(6) Search the subject's back from shoulder to waist on the side<br />
nearest you.<br />
