Evaluation Preparation: Setup: On a live-fire range, provide sufficient<br />

quantities of equipment and ammunition to support the number of Soldiers<br />

tested. Have each Soldier use his own rifle and magazine.<br />

Brief Soldier: Tell Soldier that he/she is to detect and engage targets in<br />

his/her sector and, when asked, state the range to the target.<br />

Per<strong>for</strong>mance Measures GO NO GO<br />

1. Detected targets by using one of the following methods. —— ——<br />

3. Determined range to a target. —— ——<br />

Correct Malfunctions of an M16-Series Rifle/M4 Series<br />

Carbine<br />

Conditions: Given a loaded M16-series rifle/M4-series carbine that has<br />

stopped firing, magazine, a complete cleaning rod, and a pointed object.<br />

You must correct malfunctions on the M16-series rifle/M4-series carbine.<br />

Standards: Eliminate the stoppage so that firing can be resumed.<br />

Per<strong>for</strong>mance Steps<br />

1. Per<strong>for</strong>m immediate action.<br />

Note: The key word "SPORTS" will help you remember the steps <strong>for</strong> immediate<br />

action in sequence: slap, pull, observe, release, tap, shoot.<br />

a. Slap upward on the magazine to ensure it is well seated and that the<br />

magazine follower is not jammed.<br />

Note: When slapping up on the magazine, be careful not to knock a round out of the<br />

magazine into the line of the bolt carrier.<br />

b. Pull the charging handle all the way to the rear.<br />

c. Observe the ejection of a live round or expended cartridge.<br />

Note: If a weapon fails to eject a cartridge, per<strong>for</strong>m remedial action.<br />
