welve years went by before the public found out that<br />

Frank Carrillo lost a small fortune that night he took<br />

<strong>Herrera</strong> to San Francisco and made the big stab. A Bay City paper<br />

recalled the gambling goings-on leading up to the May 29, 1901<br />

McGovern-<strong>Herrera</strong> fight.<br />

“When the announcement was made that Carrillo possessed<br />

$3,500 and was willing to place it against $5,000, the<br />

managers fell off their perches, as many had not be<strong>com</strong>e really<br />

impressed with the idea that there was anyone who was in the<br />

possession of so much real coin, and willing and anxious to<br />

back the Bakersfield favorite. The sporting editor of The<br />

Bulletin has been on this job eighteen years, and during this<br />

time he has heard managers signify their willingness to bet<br />

fortunes galore, but most of it was stage twaddle. When the<br />

showdown came, Mr. Manager invariably took to the high and<br />

imperial timbers. The only manager that ever went through<br />

with a big bet in eighteen years of experience was Frank<br />

Carrillo of Bakersfield. In 1901 Terry McGovern, while<br />

champion, came here and defeated Oscar Gardner in four<br />

rounds. Immediately after the battle, Frank Carrillo dropped in<br />
