geared toward youth.

It wasn’t all fun and games at NCYC. There
was also time set aside for prayer, reconciliation,
Benediction and adoration.

about their hopes and expectations for

The theme of NCYC was “Christ Reigns,”
but it was youth who reigned during the
three-day event deep in the heart of Kansas
City, Mo.
VOLUNTEERS
While the youth got all the attention, sitting
quietly in the background were thousands
of volunteers who were crucial to
the success of the event.
TECHNOLOGY
Times are changing fast in this technologydriven
world, and young Catholics are on
the cutting edge of it all.
CONCLUSION
While NCYC is supposed to stir emotion,
what really determines the success of the
event is what happens when these kids go
back to their parishes.

Last week’s National Catholic
Youth Conference (NCYC)
was a time of grace and
blessing for the more than
21,000 teens who came from
all over the United States to Kansas
City. I was very proud of our staff and
the legion of adult volunteers from our
Archdiocese teaming with the staff
and volunteers of the Kansas City-St.
Joseph Diocese to extend the very best
of Midwestern hospitality and to create
an environment that was so conducive
for our young people to hear God speak
his gospel of love to their hearts.
It was inspiring for me to concelebrate
the closing Mass in the Sprint
Center with thousands of Catholic
youth enthusiastically gathered around
the Lord’s altar to give him thanks for
the blessing of the past few days.
I was edified by our priests who
heard confessions for several hours
each day. Many of our priests expressed
to me how touched they were
by the sincerity, the humility and the
faith of the young people so honestly
and trustingly surrendering their sins
to the Lord and opening their hearts to
receive the comfort of his mercy and
the power of his grace.
Living up to the Kansas City reputation
of always being up-to-date, I was
proud that, for the first time, live video
of the conference was being streamed
to more than 75 countries with tens of
thousands of people from other parts of
the United States, as well as from other
nations, being able to participate in
NCYC via the Internet. It was gratifying
to hear about the text messages from
American soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan
who were receiving encouragement
and strength from the conference.
I was encouraged to witness the
receptive response of NCYC participants
when Jason and Christalina
Everett spoke frankly about the tragic
consequences of the selfish indulgence
of personal pleasure that so many in
our culture mistake for love. It was
beautiful to see our youth embrace the
challenge to live the virtues of chastity
and modesty that are essential for
authentic love. The enthusiasm of our
youth to strive to live lives of heroic,
self-sacrificing love was palpable.
However, the high point of the
gathering occurred for me on Friday
morning. Bishop Finn and I had
requested that NCYC try something
new in Kansas City. We asked that one
of the general sessions with all 21,000
assembled teens be devoted to a catechesis
on the beauty and the power of
the Eucharist followed by eucharistic
adoration, culminating with a eucharistic
procession through the streets
of downtown Kansas City. At previous
conferences there had been optional
sessions with eucharistic adoration,
but never in a general session and
never with a eucharistic procession
through the streets of the city.
It was an amazing experience.
Cardinal Daniel DiNardo, archbishop
of Houston-Galveston, gave a profound
yet engaging teaching on the gift of
intimacy with Jesus that is offered
through the Eucharist. It was absolutely
stunning to share with 21,000 lively
and naturally raucous teens several
minutes of silent prayer and adoration
of Jesus uniquely present in the
Blessed Sacrament. Many of the adult
volunteers shed tears as they witnessed
the devotion of our young people.
One of the staff members from
Kansas City, Mo., related an encounter
with a bread salesman who was
making his normal delivery to one of
the restaurants in the Power and Light
District. He inquired of her, “What is
going on?” She told him that 20,000
Catholic teens were participating in a
eucharistic procession. He said to her
proudly, “I’m Catholic!” as he set aside
his bread trays and knelt in adoration
as the Blessed Sacrament passed by.
I saw many of the police officers that
were assisting with security and traffic
control along the route make the sign
of the cross as the Eucharist passed by.
I am confident that most every
young person who participated in
NCYC had their faith strengthened.
Hopefully, each one of them returned
home with a deeper experience of the
love of Jesus for them and a greater
love for the church.
One of the youth participants was
asked by an innocent passerby, “What
are you protesting?” She proudly responded,
“We aren’t protesting anything!
We are proclaiming our love for
Jesus!”
Gazing back from the vantage point
of Bartle Hall, I will never forget the
image of 21,000 young people reverently
following Jesus through the
streets of downtown Kansas City. I
trust that Catholic youth from across
the nation were truly blest by their
participation in NCYC. Regardless of
whatever each NCYC participant received,
they left a lasting impression of
the vibrancy and vitality of the faith of
young Catholics. I am grateful for their
visit to our metropolitan community.
They renewed and strengthened my
hope in the truth that Jesus is alive and
well in the hearts of our young people!
The theme of the conference was:
“Christ Reigns!” Jesus definitely, as
much as possible this side of heaven,
ruled the streets of downtown Kansas
City for three days.
There have been some studies of
how much better athletic teams performed
after Pope John Paul II visited
their cities. After the Holy Father
visited St. Louis in January 1999, the
St. Louis Rams won the Super Bowl in
January 2000. I was reminded of this
when the Chiefs upset the Steelers on
Sunday.
With God, they say, there are no
coincidences.

Catholic youth wanting
to relax, mingle,
or burn off some
energy headed to
the Reign Forest —
a 200,000-square-foot thematic
park in Bartle Hall, which provided
a wealth of educational
and recreational activities.
Central to the forest were
three giant tree houses and
an area where groups could
participate in challenges that
taught some surprising lessons.
Exhibitors surrounded
the area and youth were free
to wander through booths,
gathering information about
religious vocations, Catholic
colleges, organizations and
service projects.
Conference participants
could test their skills at sports
challenges, get creative in the
art area, play on giant inflatables,
or participate in an MP3
experiment.
They could shop in the market
place or relax in the “teens
only” coffee shop, where bands
played throughout the day.
It was the perfect place for
teens to meet old friends, make
new ones and trade hats and
souvenirs — all while learning
a little bit more about what it
means to be Catholic.

After going through a activity based on the lives of the saints, a group met in one of the tree houses in the
Reign Forest to discuss what they have just been through and how it is applicable to their daily life.
For nearly 45 minutes, streets in downtown
Kansas City, Mo., were closed
as clusters of teens streamed down
14th Street on the morning of Friday,
Nov. 20. The kids were taking part in
a eucharistic procession, which began as adoration
of the Blessed Sacrament inside the Sprint
Center. Teens waited their turn to file out of the
center and follow the Eucharist, carried in a
monstrance by Archbishop Joseph F. Naumann.
The procession ended several blocks later at the
Bartle Hall Convention Center, where the Eucharist
was placed in a room set aside for prayer and
adoration.

hats, Catholic swag
or merchandise, and
earwax-melting music,
then the National
Catholic Youth Conference
here was the place to be.
But if you wanted a
profound experience of the
Catholic faith, this, too, was
the place to be.
“I think part of it is we
do want to come here and
have fun, but all of us here
want to grow in our faith,
and that’s why we’re here
together,” said Catie Macke,
a member of St. Joseph
Parish in Crescent Springs,
Ky., and a youth reporter for

Just about everything
— from the exhibits and
activities in the sprawling
Thematic Park in Bartle
Hall to the concerts and
events in Municipal Auditorium
and Sprint Center
— was permeated with the
Catholic faith.
Traditional features of
Catholic faith got their
own NCYC treatment.
These included the massive
eucharistic procession on
Friday, the daily liturgies,
Benediction and eucharistic
adoration, and the closing
Mass.
Many of the 21,000
youth made their ways to
special chapels in Bartle
Hall that were reserved for
the sacrament of reconciliation,
for eucharistic adoration,
and for prayer.
Some didn’t even need
a chapel, but would quietly
gather with a priest or
religious for a quiet talk or
spontaneous prayer.

Joe Anguiano traded five times to get the duck hat he was
wearing, but he wasn’t finished.
“I’m trying to get a moose hat,” said Anguiano, a
member of St. Matthew Parish in Topeka.
But like a lot of other Catholic youth at the National
Catholic Youth Conference, he had more on his mind than hats.
“[NCYC] really makes me want to explore my vocation, maybe
become a priest or a brother,” he said.
Words to gladden a bishop’s heart.
This year’s NCYC was attended by 33 bishops, many of whom
participated in roundtable discussions with the youth. The kids’
words and public witness — especially during the impressive eucharistic
procession — encouraged the bishops.
“As a bishop, it’s a very energizing experience to see these
young people gathered because they love Jesus and are engaged
with the church,” said Archbishop Joseph F. Naumann.
The bishops wanted to listen to the youth to learn of their experiences
and the challenges they face.
“Hopefully, we can share with them how important they are
to the church and how the Lord particularly chooses the young
to be his instruments of hope,” said the archbishop.
What do the young want? They want the truth preached in its
fullness, and they want to be challenged.

Youth danced on stage as part of a choreographed routine at the opening ceremony on
Nov. 19.
Sometimes they’d form an impromptu conga line and snake
up the sidewalk, or break into a sudden cheer or chant.
“N-C!” one group would yell to another across the street.
“Y-C!” the other would reply.
“N-C, Y-C! N-C, Y-C!” they’d chant together.
Sometimes they’d simply give each other a long, enthusiastic,
“Heeyyyyy!!!”
The National Catholic Youth Conference, Nov. 19 to 21, brought
more than 21,000 teenage Catholic youth to Kansas City, Mo. The
crowds of chattering youth largely dominated a 24-block area from
Bartle Hall to the Sprint Center, bringing equal amounts of energy and
faith.
The theme was “Christ Reigns,” which was indeed the case when
the event-goers packed 14th Street between the Sprint Center and the
Municipal Auditorium during a eucharistic procession.
Here’s NCYC 2009 by the numbers:
In addition to the youthful attendees, there were 1,300 adult volunteers;
900 crew and staff; 700 exhibits; 60 bands; 33 bishops and
one cardinal. And the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas — which
co-hosted the event with the Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph — sent
1,300 youths.
The economic impact to the area was approximately $15 million,
but the spiritual impact was even bigger, said Dana Nearmyer, archdiocesan
consultant for evangelization and Catholic formation — youth.

Youth animators — comprised of teens from all over the country, including 30 from the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas — provided their musical and dancing skills
for the closing ceremony at the Sprint Center.

It’s no small feat to simultaneously entertain, engage, and supervise 21,000
teens. Over 1,000 volunteers were on hand throughout NCYC to do everything
— sell merchandise, direct traffic, register youth, supervise activities,
and help with the liturgies. Some 2,500 adults served as chaperones for the
convention, taking charge of parish and diocesan groups to ensure kids were
safe, fed, and accounted for during the conference.

What’s the big difference between the first
National Catholic Youth Conference
held here in 1997 and this year’s event?
Technology.
In 1997, few teenagers had cell
phones, and nobody tweeted, texted, or surfed with wireless
broadband Internet. Today’s youths are native users
of this technology — something much in evidence at
NCYC 2009.
The teens could check out video cameras to contribute
content, send and receive text messages about saints, get
free music downloads and podcasts, access streaming live
video, and more.
People in more than 70 countries participated in virtual
pilgrimages by receiving live steaming video through My-
CatholicVoice.com, a Catholic online resource that combines
social networking and digital multimedia content.
“For the pilgrims, it’s not just about information, it’s
about participating,” said Fred Fosnacht, a member of
Prince of Peace Parish in Olathe and founder of My-
CatholicVoice.com.
“For instance,” he continued, “they can text their prayers
of petition that go on the Twitter walls and are actually being
posted outside the eucharistic adoration chapel, so people
who are following that feed can pray for each other.”
What his company is trying to do is find the ways youth
are connecting through technology — through “rich”
video and audio methods on the Internet.

board of trustees of St. James Academy, Lenexa, are seeking

president of St. James, the newest Catholic high school in
the Johnson County pastoral region of the Archdiocese of

Early in his pontificate, Pope Benedict XVI said, “The Church
is young!”
This message truly hit home in the hearts of thousands
of young Catholics at NCYC.
“Usually church is more directed to older people and
their problems, but this is all centered toward us,” said Summer Gernon,
a member of St. Ann Parish in Hiawatha.
When asked what it means to be a Catholic in the 21st century, the
majority answered along these lines: to follow your faith, to stand up
for your faith, to have Jesus present in your life.
But what will they take away from NCYC?
“They’ll take away a ton,” said Father Mitchel Zimmerman, director
of the archdiocesan vocations office. “This is an experience they
may not think about every day for the rest of their lives, but it will be
an experience that they can always draw back from . . . wherever life
takes them.”
The spirit of NCYC is now in them, said Father John Lager, OFM
Cap., director of vocations for the Capuchin Province of Mid-America.
“They’ll take away a sense of community,” he added. “They’ll take
the spirit of this conference with them, knowing that whatever they
face, Christ reigns in their hearts. They’ll take away hope.”
The spirit of the conference took over as youth came together for a common cause — being Catholic. The National Catholic Youth Conference served to inspire the attendees and
gave them tools to take back to share with their home parishes.
