Technical Roadmap
Rapid availability coordinated precisely to specific demands –
the BAG platforms meet the needs of luminaire manufacturers
across a wide spectrum. The combination of electronic control gear
and LED modules have been designed for specific applications and
permanently simplify production planning and logistics for luminaire
producers. In the dynamic LED sector it‘s all about short innovation
cycles, and the platforms are created precisely with this in mind as
they enable rapidity of product development and always offer you
the latest state of lighting electronics. A further benefit: thanks to the
BAG platform strategy, luminaire manufacturers can design modular
luminaire systems, can simplify procurement and make production
significantly more flexible.
An all-round service
Rapid decisions, highly precise processes and short development times: BAG expertise in the LEDcycle is 100 per cent aligned to the
needs of customers, for modern, future-fit technologies that are rapidly made available, for individual support and an „on-site“ service
Design concepts
BAG LED portfolio
One of the main challenges for the producers of LED lighting today
consists of selecting the right components. BAG electronics presents
three solution approaches that make it more simple for luminaire manufacturers
to find the optimal concept for their requirements.
An LED light engine, LLE in short, designates the combination of one
or several LED modules and a control gear. Both components can either
be in a single housing or designed as separate assemblies.
With ASTARES and ZITARES, BAG offers a modular approach with matched
components from the module and control gear sectors. The possible
variants of the resulting light engines cover a variety of applications
in professional lighting such as office buildings, shops and
industrial uses.
The NEXARES product range defines a product group of LED light engines
where LEDs and control gear are integrated on the same PCB,
meaning an all-in-one system. Despite the integrated ECG, NEXARES
offers the benefit of an extremely flat design with simultaneously very
high uniformity of light distribution. This makes NEXARES an optimal
solution for luminaires with very low construction heights and the requirement
of a flat light source. Additional space for the integration of
a control unit is not needed.
With the CRONIUS product range, BAG defines light engines with installation
based on a base-socket principle, and simple use of LED light
sources in a luminaire is the basis of this concept. The design of these
conversion systems aids the simple modification of luminaires to LED
technology.
Electronic control gear units
ZITARES
ZITARES - electronic control gear for the operation of
LED modules
BAG offers a wide spectrum of electronic control gear for the operation
of LED modules with the ZITARES product family, and performance features
are primarily aimed at the use of the ECG in professional general
lighting applications with white light. The differing versions offer optimal
solutions for a wide array of applications for example in the office,
school, industry and shop sectors.
The possible levels of freedom and flexibility connected with this in the
implementation of LED lighting solutions demand electronic control
gear that for example can meet the requirements of switchable and
dimmable installations with various output currents and wattages.
These characteristics are met by ZITARES by the product portfolio as
well as by individual products.
Long-term BAG experience in the sector of electronic ballasts was implemented
for development of the ZITARES control gear in order to
achieve maximum quality and reliability for the various application
areas. The concise structuring and logics of the assortment according
to product properties is a further result of a consistently implemented
platform strategy.
The terms flexibility, efficiency and miniaturisation have gained in importance
in particular for the sector of LED lighting, and such features
also characterise the performance of ZITARES control gear.
Because LED today offers an efficient alternative to conventional light
sources in many applications, the ECG is also an essential factor for
considering total system efficiency. ZITARES in this respect offers a
selection of products with an above-average efficiency of up to 93%.
A further feature typical of LED is miniaturisation, and in this regard it
is not only decisive to ensure an extremely small construction size but
also to find the optimal ratio between efficiency and size in order to
ensure a high quality level. This task was highly focused on with the
design of the ZITARES platform. The products are characterised not
only by an almost completely uniform construction height of 21 mm
and market-standard fixing dimensions but also with comparably high
permissible output power.
LED modules
ASTARES
ASTARES - LED modules for different
lighting tasks
ASTARES represents an assortment of LED modules designed for a
wide diversity of lighting tasks. Here applications with mainly point
light sources as well as wide-area light were taken into account. Operation
of the modules is via a supplementary electronic control gear,
for example from the ZITARES series from BAG. Both components together
form an LED light engine.
The design of the modules and the specification of high quality LEDs
ensure a lighting quality meeting the demands of professional light
applications.
The individual mechanical and photometric characteristics have been
selected so that all of the four ASTARES classes is custom-developed
for specific application sectors.
In addition to standardised luminous flux packages, ASTARES components
also enable combination in a luminaire to achieve further luminous
flux values.
The modularity in particular enables a diversity of options for use of
the modules in highly different applications.
Light Engines
NEXARES and CRONIUS
NEXARES - All-In-One systems
With NEXARES, BAG presents a light engine where LED module and
electronic control unit are combined on a PCB, an all-in-one solution.
The design has also focused on minimum construction height. With a
height of only 8 mm and without the necessity of an additional control
gear having to be installed in the luminaire, NEXARES enables maximum
flexibility for luminaire design.
The selection, quantity and distribution of the LEDs are already oriented
to high uniformity of light distribution. Combined with a diffuse or
prismatic luminaire cover, optimal light output ratios are achieved for
applications with wide-area illumination.

Simple handling and the properties of the NEXARES modules mean a
wide variety of application areas in general lighting, e.g. corridors,
stairways, foyers, hotels and restaurants. NEXARES is also an optimal
solution for a wide number of applications in accent and decorative
lighting.
CRONIUS - Conversion system
CRONIUS offers luminaire manufacturers a simple, flexible solution for

available light source and control unit in one component.
ratively
simple to integrate an LED light source into a luminaire, but
replacing a light engine in a luminaire at any time is also highly simple.
In this way for example, colour temperature can be modified by
simply exchanging the light engine.

the light dimming option this opens up many interesting application
areas such as shops, hotels and corridors.
Safely LED operating
Due to their construction and the resulting current voltage characteristic
of LEDs, these must be operated with constant DC current. This
precondition stipulates current control that is either part of the LED
module, i.e. an assembly consisting of several LEDs, or part of the
control unit. On this basis, two general concepts have come about
in practice:
Efficiency: This is what counts
The efficiency of an electronic control unit is defined as the ratio between
the power output of the ECG and the total input power. Decisive
for the efficiency of an ECG are the switching topology used and the
selection of suitable components.
The efficiencies of higher quality ECGs are usually in a range of ≥
90 % at maximum permissible power output of the ECG. If complete

shows the dependence of efficiency on the load at the output for the
ZITARES CC series from BAG.
LED dimming
The use of dimmable electronic control gear enables not only dimming
lighting to desired levels, but also at the same time the reduction
of luminous flux and thus also energy consumption. Dimming
LEDs can either be implemented by modifying the amplitude of the
operating current of the LEDs or via pulsed LED operation with rapid

Because the photometric properties of an LED, e.g. colour tempera-

usually used in practice. The LED is always operated with its nominal
current during start-up times. The dimming level is set via the ratio
To avoid flickering and beading effects, a switching frequency should
be specified where the human eye only perceives the mean value of
the light. With the dimmable ECGs of the ZITARES CC series a frequency
of 500 Hz was set for this reason.
1–10 V-Interface

When the ECG is connected to a current sink, e.g. an ohmic resistance,
a control voltage is generated above the resistance and thus at the
device connection terminals.
Depending on the control voltage applied, the ECG modifies the luminous
flux of the lamp operated. By varying the resistance value, con-

curve between control voltage and luminous flux is manufacturerdependent.
Instead of ohmic resistances, electronic dimmers and control devices
are also available on the market designed especially for connecting

that can be connected to a dimmer is determined by its maximum
current load capacity.

dimmable ECG must definitely be mains voltage-stable. The dimming
interface and mains voltage supply are galvanically isolated in the
electronic control unit and separated on the secondary side.
DALI Interface
DALI stands for Digital Addressable Lighting Interface and specifies a
digital interface designed for room-oriented dimmable lighting applications.
The digital data transfer between a DALI control device and
the dimmable electronic control gear enables individual addressing of
specific luminaires and the flexible classification of luminaire groups
with a single 2-core control line for all luminaires.
This for example offers the option of modifying group assignments
after the installation at a later date and without additional installation
effort. The maximum number of dimmable ECGs and configurable
groups in a lighting installation is determined by the control device
used.

electronic control gear is not only dimmed but also switched. The
switching on and off of the lighting system is thus power-free.
The dimming characteristic in the DALI standard is defined as a
logarithmic curve in order to take into account eye sensitivity to
illuminance.
The 2-core control line for connection to the DALI interface of the
dimmable ECG must definitely be mains voltage-stable. The DALI
standard permits common routing of the mains and control line in a
sheathed cable. The dimming interface and mains voltage supply are
galvanically isolated in the electronic control unit and separated on
the secondary side.
Control of dimmable ECG

equipped with an additional 2-pole connection terminal. The ana-

established for dimming in lighting technology, and both interfaces
are defined as part of international standards to ensure the compatibility
of components.
Service life of electronic control gears
The service life and thus reliability of electronic control gear is determined
by the failure rates of the components used.
In addition to the electrical specification and quality of components,
tronics
ECGs from the ZITARES series are designed so that a failure
rate of maximum 2% per 1,000 hours is expected with the maximum
permissible housing temperature tc,max. This corresponds to a service
life of 50,000 hours at a possible percentage of failed devices
vice
life of more than 20 years is achieved, whereby during this time
period 10% of devices can statistically fail. With lower device temperatures
the service life of the electronic control gear is increased.

failure rate is approximately halved, corresponding to a service life
of 100,000 hours. Exceeding the temperature tc,max can lead to a
correspondingly drastic shortening of service life.
To ensure the specified service life, all components and switching
groups of BAG electronics ECGs are designed to operate below their
permissible limit values. And in order to eliminate premature failures
resulting from concealed defects, all devices pass through various
test benches during the manufacturing process where component
testing and measurements of operation-relevant data for example
are implemented. The ECGs are then subjected to a final burn-in test
before dispatch.
Colour temperature: knowledge and facts
CCT - Correlated Colour Temperature
The complete diversity of visible light can be shown in the CIE standard
colour chart as a simplified form of display. Individual colours
are shown on the spectral colour line running along the outer border.
White light as a mixed colour is shown along the black body curve.
This curve has its origin in the red colour tone and specifies the
colour sequence shown by a black body with increasing heat. The
temperature of the black body is designated as light colour and pro-

K cool white to 10,000 K daylight white. The temperature assigned
to the light colour is termed Correlated Colour Temperature and normally
abbreviated to CCT.
Achievement of identical colour perception
SDCM - Standard Deviation of Colour Matching
The ANSI standard was introduced in order to more precisely specify
colour tone tolerances of white light that segment the range along
CRI - Colour Rendering Index
In addition to light colour, colour rendering is also decisive for light
quality. The evaluation of the colour rendering of a light source is
implemented via eight pastel tones and comparison with an
ideal light source. Temperature radiators or sunlight have the widest
colour spectrum and thus enable colours to appear especially trueto-life.
Comparison of colour rendering is via the Ra colour rendering

As reference light sources, an incandescent lamp and sunlight for
example have a CRI or Ra value of 100. Typical values for white light
LED are 80 and thus meet the general requirement for many indoor
lighting applications.
LED: Long life for high efficiency
LEDs are characterised by comparatively longer operating durations.
The service life is essentially defined by the reduction of luminous
flux, known as degradation.
The end of service life is usually reached when the luminous flux
of the LED falls to the typical value of 70% of the initial value. The
duration until this time point is reached is designated the L70 value

The ratio of failed LEDs is defined with the so-called mortality and
the value B. The B10 value for example specifies the point of time
dary
role due to its scale compared to degradation.
