Greg Shaw

Sledge Hockey World

Championship 2009 gold medalist

Greg Shaw was born with a disability. His spine ends at his waist.

He has no use of his legs, but that hasn’t stopped him from setting

and achieving the loftiest of goals. Greg skis, plays sled hockey,

and cycles. Why? Because Greg loves the thrill of competition. He

overcomes challenges every day and refuses to give up.

Greg came to the National Ability Center in 2004 at the age of 14.

His family moved here from Florida to give Greg some previously

unimaginable opportunities. Greg

quickly became a member of the

NAC’s ski team and tried out for the

Ability Center’s Golden Eagles sled

hockey team after some prodding

from friend JC Weeks. Not only

did Greg make the Golden Eagles

team, but in 2006, he made the U.S.

National Sled Hockey Team. Greg is

now realizing his five-year-old goal

of being a part of the 2010 Paralympics as he competes with Team

USA after winning the Sledge Hockey World Championship gold

medal this summer in the Czech Republic.

Greg says he owes much of his success to his mom. “She’s always

been the most motivational person in my entire life,” Shaw said.

“Any challenge when I was growing up…she always pushed me

to go the extra step. I’ve never sat down and said, ‘I’m disabled, I

can’t do this.’”

“Because of the NAC, I hope to make all of my goals a reality,”

said Shaw.

“One day I want to win a gold medal,” Shaw said. “The rest

depends on where life takes me. I’m basically along for the ride.”
