MIDDLE SCHOOL NEWS COMMUNITY NEWS Primary School Debating Competition This year Redeemer has not entered Year 6 and 7 teams in the Queensland Debating Union Junior Competition. Instead, we have organised a local debating competition. Our students in Years 6 and 7 are competing instead against three local primary schools – St Peters, MacGregor and Rochedale. Last week a preliminary round was held, only involving teams in each school. Parents have already commented on the advantages of this new competition. All debates are held at Redeemer, with the Year 6 teams starting at 4.30pm and the Year7 teams starting at 5.30pm. Instead of needing to travel to inner city schools, where parking facilities are limited, there is ample parking at our College. Instead of debates starting at 7.00pm, they are now all completed by 6.30pm. Inter-school debates will occur at Redeemer on Wednesday 21 August, Wednesday 11 September and Thursday 24 October. Families are most welcome to attend these debates. PARENTS & FRIENDS NEWS P & F Market Night Saturday 7 September, 6.00pm-8.30pm “Market Night” is coming to Redeemer! Market Night will consist of a combination of market style stalls, supper, and light entertainment. Market Night will be held in the Multi-Purpose Centre Auditorium on Saturday 7 September from 6.00pm-8.30pm. Supper and dessert will be available for purchase together with tea and coffee, cold drinks and champagne. Stalls include: Avon, Redeemer Handmade Gifts, Phoenix Cards, Intimo, Leanne's Fashion Jewellery, Lil Princess, Chez Creations, Ladies Fashion, Impressionable Kids, Temple Arts & Crafts, plus more! Entry: $5 per person (and includes complimentary orange juice or champagne on arrival, and 5 tickets to the prize draw). Tickets will shortly be available for sale online through the Redeemer website. Stay tuned! Hand Made Gifts Group The Hand Made Gifts Group will be continuing again throughout Term 3 with regular workshops being each fortnight making exciting new handmade gifts for our stall at the Fair! The days for our workshops this term are: Every second Thursday at Kath Ramsay’s home: 1.00pm - 3.00pm on Thursday 8 & 22 August; 5 & 19 September. Contact Kath Ramsay on 0400 280 998 for details. If you are unable to make it to the workshops but would like to make something for the stall, all craft donations are accepted. Burundi Barnyard Bonanza Each year Our Saviour Lutheran Church, (which worships in Redeemer Chapel each Sunday), holds a bush dance. The “Burundi Barnyard Bonanza” will be held this Saturday night, 3 August in the Redeemer Multi-Purpose Centre. It is a fantastic opportunity for both students and their families to come along and have a good night whilst also learning about life in Burundi. With connections to Australian Lutheran World Service, all profits from the night will go straight to helping and benefiting the livelihood of the people of Burundi. Children's games will be run from 5.30pm until 6.30pm, with a barbecue dinner from 6.00pm until 7.00pm. The bush dancing will begin from 7.00pm! Tickets can be bought on the night, and are only $10 per person, or $40 for a family of 5 - kids under 5 years are free! It's always a great night, and we hope to see you there! SENIOR SCHOOL NEWS Artist in Residence 2013 Redeemer Art Department started Term 3 with the fantastic experience of having ceramic sculpture artist, Ruth Park, as guest artist in residence for the week, 9-12 July. Ruth Park, from the Northern Rivers District of NSW, near Lismore, is a renowned artist both nationally and internationally. The Year 11 Visual Art class experienced a full day workshop on the Wednesday, with the construction of a life-size human bust, paying attention to accurate human proportions and features. This year’s cohort produced a range of genuine “characters”, all with distinctive features and personalities. Ruth worked with the Year 9 Visual Art class to produce large, free-standing Gremlin heads. In a whole day workshop on the Thursday the Year 9’s created amazing fantasy characters. In addition to taking practical classes throughout each day, Ruth also worked on her own art piece over the week. This year Ruth demonstrated and constructed wheel-thrown pots. She also demonstrated many finishing effects. As it was only a four day week, Ruth stayed until 5.00pm on the Friday for any students who wished to have some extra tuition time. Both Art staff and Art students appreciated Ruth’s talented expertise and her friendly and cheerful delivery. The workshops proved to be truly fruitful, fun and enriching for all involved, with students creating more imaginative and quality work than ever before. Image of God I highly value keeping up to speed with current affairs, so watching the news or reading stuff on my BBC app are daily activities. Some days, however, I wonder why I bother! Watching the news can be a terribly depressing experience. There are days when it seems that humanity is just going to the dogs!! One bad news story follows another – internationally, nationally, or locally. I’m well aware, of course, that the current affairs we hear about are whatever the media wants to focus attention on, and that the more dramatic and terrible a news item is, the more attention it will get. There are moments when I honestly wonder how on earth humanity has made it this far! Sometimes good things are reported in the media as well, but there seem to be many days when my faith in humanity is almost lost, only to be picked up again by a simple act of kindness I might witness in my own neighbourhood. Not newsworthy stuff, but just a little bit of something which restores my faith in humanity, and that all is not lost. Sometimes a little introspection is in order, and before I start to ponder the state of humanity by what I see “out there”, it’s best to take a look inside and see what’s happening “in there”. And truthfully, the same good and evil, the same good news/bad news stories play out in my own soul. One biblical concept that has fascinated me for a long time is the ‘imago dei’, the image of God. From the very first chapter of the Bible, it is clear that this is what separates us as a species. We alone endlessly research to better understand our world, we alone wrestle with the ethical life, and we alone ponder whether there is any meaning to any of this. Although the definition of this concept could be nuanced in a myriad of ways, a simple working definition here can be that we reflect God’s living presence in the world. Even a simple observation of the world shows us that the human being occupies a god-like status. An equally simple observation is that, if we are god-like, then we don’t do a very good job of it. As bearers of God’s image, we possess all kinds of abilities. But we are confronted with a choice. How we use the image of God within us, like it or not, up to us. We can put our abilities to good use, or we can put them to bad use. I can use my ability to speak to build people up, or to cut them down. One thing I don’t have a choice about is that the war will wage within me (in classical theological terms, I’m a sinner whether I like it or not, and I don’t have a choice not to be one). But here’s the thing. I also know that I’m not judged by God for that, because Jesus has removed that fear. What’s left is that we are all confronted with a choice. What do we do with the image of God within us?
