THE CHERRY PICKERS 

The Cherry Pickers were formed when the 

wives (and former wives) of Weston-Super-Mare’s 

own “Fallen Apples” got fed up 

with their husbands having all the fun. They 

picked some instruments at random and 

started strumming away in various attics 

and garages until it began to sound like 

music! The Cherry Pickers now deal in 

deep traditional Americana, while delivering 

cute, heartfelt and moving covers of 

Nirvana, Hank Williams, and The Beatles. 

Is it sexist to say they’re also gorgeous? 

Probably. 

The Cherries consist of Julie Lane - Mandolin, 

vocals; Amy Shippey - Bass, Fiddle, 

vocals; Sharon Smith - Guitar, vocals; Luke 

Scadding - Guitar and finger clicks; and 

Andy Williams - Percussion and fabulous

Is a South West acoustic guitar solo 

singer,hailing from Weston-Super-Mare, 

Johnny has been gigging in and around the 

South West for the last few years entertaining 

pubs and clubs with his eclectic range 

of covers from Paul Weller to Frank Sinatra 

and all that’s in between. Johnny is currently 

in the studio recording his debut album 

all of which you can hear in his live show, 

his sound has been likened to James Morrison, 

James Blunt and even James 

Brown!! Johnny’s performance background 

is extensive having come from a family of 

performers, his father Jack was a stand up 

ventriloquist and his mother a popular 

children’s entertainer, Johnny first started 

playing guitar in his first year at secondary 

school, he hasn’t looked back.

WATCHET live MUSIC FESTIVAL 

“Bringing the Festival Experience 

to West Somerset” That’s just what 

WATCHET live will be doing this summer. 

Leave the rain, mud and wind locked away 

at home, get the sunscreen and Bermuda 

shorts out and come along to the August 

Bank Holiday Weekend 27th - 29th) to 

enjoy 3 days of lively musical entertainment. 

There will be over 30 live acts performing 

on 2 stages ranging in styles from 

Rock to Ska, Indie to Dance, Hip Hop to 

Swing! A spoke person for the event stated 

that each day of the festival this year will 

have it’s own musical theme. 

Friday (27th) is Tribute Night on the main 

stage. To get the weekend started come 

along and get into the festival spirit with 

Elvis, My Winehouse, and The Stones. 

Saturday (28th) is Original Music day with 

acts like The Beat, The Monaro’s, The 

Confused, Occupants of the Hedge, Shugga 

Daddi, Jack 2 Jack, Groove Grinder, 

The Surfin Turnips and last years winner of 

Battle of the Bands: Zoltar Speaks. 

Sunday (29th) is Fancy Dress day with 

The Bad Shepherds headlining the main 

stage. Support is provided by ex Inspiral 

Carpets front man Tom Hingley and his 

band. Also performing will be - Penthouse 

Shed, Rainy and The Dust, The Pyrates, 

and The Ten Pound Suit Band. 

The festival is family friendly, so Sundays 

even more fun with a pirate theme, so get 

your eye patches and parrots out! There

It was back in April ‘09 when I reviewed the 

new album from singer/songwriter Ben 

Pang. Now Ben has been busy since then 

out playing live, rehearsing new material, 

and waiting for the album to be finished. 

Now when I reviewed the CD ‘Where Guitars 

Go To Die’ I was well impressed, some 

very good songs, good lyrics, so I was gob 

smacked when told that it was not the 

finished product!! The art work has been 

added to, the album now tweaked etc.. And 

the good news to all waiting, soon to be 

released. We will bring you more details, 

but do take time out to listen to Ben Pang, 

this guy has the magic when it comes to 

music and songwriting and the album is 

one of the best I’ve played.

JULES BENJAMIN @THE STAR INN 

On Friday 12th March my two friends and I 

drove to The Star Inn, Bentworth, near 

Alton, Hampshire to sample the food and 

listen to ‘Jules Benjamin’ I have heard him 

referred to as a ‘one man music machine’. 

He plays guitar, keyboards and harmonica. 

The pub was packed when Jules performed 

and the audience, a mixture of 

young and old, obviously enjoyed his music 

as well as his banter in between songs. 

The pub is a perfect venue for his type of 

gig; small, intimate and friendly. I loved his 

singing voice and varied choice of songs, 

which included music from such artists as 

The Eagles, David Bowie, The Beatles, 

Billy Joel, Bob Dylan, Buddy Holly, Eric 

Clapton, Van Morrison, Steely Dan and 

many many more........... 

There was a real fire blazing in the hearth, 

the food was delicious, service excellent, 

great music and brilliant atmosphere. What 

more could you ask for in an evening out! 

My friends and I had a wonderful evening 


and highly recommend Jules Benjamin and

It’s May already, doesn’t time fly by! 

This month sees the birth of the classic 

rock n roll pioneers like Ricky Nelson 8th 

1940, Larry Williams 10th 1935, Richie 

Valens 13th 1941, Joe Brown 13th 1941, 

Big Joe Turner 18th 1911 and showcase 

Alma Cogan 19th 1932. This month @ The 

Bawa in Bristol you have got on the 2nd 

‘The Revolutionaries’, 9th ‘The Roosters’, 

16th ‘The Crown Top Kings’, 23rd ‘The 

Jets’ and on the 30th ‘Memphis 56’. 

Memphis 56 is a four piece band based in 

Yeovil, Somerset and was formed back in 

2004, by Andrew, who’s on lead vocals and 

rhythm guitar, Charlie on lead, John on 

drums and TJ on double bass, with influences 

by Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, Buddy 

Holly and Johnny Burnette. A great 

band that will have you rockin all night with 

some great classic R n R/Rockabilly they 

are smart, friendly and a very professional 

band, a great night will be had I’m sure. I’ve 

seen them perform a few times and they 

get better and better. 

At Dave & Shirley’s @ Pill, nr Bristol on the 

7th, ‘The Pontiacs’, don’t forget this club’s 

Rock ‘n’ Roll nights are all for charity so 

keep up the good work guys, you do a 

brilliant job. On the 8th @ Begbrook they 

have got ‘Mike Byrne and the Sunrockers’ 

not seen this band but I know Brenda & 

Dudley will make you very welcome. On 

the 14th @ Bridgwater Sports and Social 

Club Cheryl and Tony from Taunton’s R ‘n’

three piece who are well established on the 

Rock ‘n’ Roll circuit with their influences 

from the likes of Bill Haley, Johnny Burnette,

Presley. They usually keep the dance floor 

full with the choice of R ‘n’ R / Rockabilly, 

seen them recently at Pill and it was a great 

night, keeping everyone happy singing the 

great classic’s and a few of their own 

tracks. I’ve even bought some of their CD 

albums they had for sale, very good too! 

The 30th of this month Dave from 

Blueswingin Mama’s is doing an aldayer @ 

Bridgwater Albion Rugby Club, College 

Way, Bath Road, TA6 4TZ. Tickets are £10

ON THE BACK COVER THE BLUE LIZARD KINGS 

Formed late in 2008 ‘The Blue Lizard Kings’ brought together three friends who had 

played with the late Alan Briars in his ‘Laundry Yard Scrub Band’. They are Frank 

Bradley who is a well known violin player having played with the folk dance band 

‘Pendragon’ for many years and various other folk bands in the South West. 

Paul Hartshorn who is recognised as one of the finest blues/rock guitarists around 

playing with such musicians as Mike Hoddinott, Pete Gage (ex Dr. Feelgood) and many 

other bands (The Skeeters, Pink Torpedo’s etc..) Tony Goldsmith on piano, who played 

with Alan Briars in various bands (Tinkers Cuss, The Jelly Roll Boys etc). Both Paul and 

Tony are more or less the ‘house musicians’ of the Cellar Bar in the Bear Hotel, Devizes 

(they both also play in The Blue Dempseys who are regulars at the Cellars Bar). The aim 

of the Blue Lizard Kings is to play good time music across the musical landscape 

including Irish, swing jazz, rock and blues. The emphasis is on musical feel and interplay 

between the instruments. They also like to arrange classic rock tunes in their own style, 

this is reflected in their arrangements of The Who number ‘Behind Blue Eyes’ and the 

Neil Young song ‘After the Gold Rush’ which are both featured on the CD ‘Bear Tracks’ 

which also includes four of their own original tunes. The CD was recorded in four hours 

over two Sunday mornings in the Cellar Bar without dubbing or additional tracks. The Cd 

reflects how the Lizard Kings play live although singer Nikki Mascell has recently joined 

the band and there will be more emphasis on classic rock tunes in the future (without 

losing the jig & reels that are an integral part of the bands repertoire) The CD is 

dedicated to the memory of Alan Briars who was one of the founders of the Trowbridge 

Village Pump Festival, which he ran for over 30 years - “A fine singer and man who loved

Bands, giving an ideal situation to perform on a proper festival stage,the organisers will 

be inviting agents and promoters to attend, with the whole aim to expand and promote

be a stall set up on the Sunday for those performing to sell their Cd’s, Tee-shirts etc...

SEVERE ZERO 

If you are a UK band but as yet unsigned, 

how do you go about touring the States? 

Simple - you organise the whole shebang 

yourself and that’s exactly what North Devon 

based ‘Severe Zero’ have done. 

Putting aside the British Airways strike situation, 

the boys had a gig the night they 

flew into New York, on April 5th, so front 

man Luke Bond said, “It was so crazy! The 

tour started with three nights in New York, 

we were looking forward to it all, and then 

it was happening.” The post-hardcore trio, 

which include Luke Band vocals and lead 

guitar, Joe Brewer vocals and bass and 

Frank Rawle on drums, had wanted to gig 

in the States for ages, “So we thought, why 

not just get out there? At the beginning of 

January we got serious about it and stated 

to book the tour ourselves.” Added Bond, 

“I’ve made millions of phone calls to promoters, 

venues - clicking dates and availability, 

plus emailing MP3s and posting 

demos - it’s been mad! To help make it 

happen I was luck enough to be able to 

enlist the help of a guy called Jason Gruen 

of US based Prelude Publishing. We met 

on-line several years ago when he messaged 

me through MP3.com and said he 

really liked our music. I’ve met him in person 

a few times and he’s a great guy.” 

So how do you go about funding a tour of 

the US? “We’re paying for it completely off 

our own backs,” added Bond. “We’ve 

saved up, paid for our flights, and hired an 

RV.” Any band that is prepared to book and 

fund their own US tour speaks volumes 

about their ambition and resolute DIY attitude 

and on that alone “Severe Zero” deserve

THE ZZ TOPS gaining top reputation 

Were formed in 2007 to celebrate the music and career of one of the greatest rock bands 

of all time. Comprising of Frank Weird on drums; Dusty Trills on bass guitar; and the Rev 

Billy F Bigguns on guitar; that lil’ ol’ band from Devon nails the look, the sound; and the 

overall vibe of the Texas trio with the beards, cheap sunglasses, the fuzzy guitars, the 

outfits and all the moves. Their shows place great emphasis on ZZ Tops actual live 

performance thus creating the most dynamic stage show, packed full of classic’s from

THE HUCKLEBERRIES 

Born in 1996, they started as a busking duo, gradually growing into a six piece band. The 

Bands musical influences are gathered from a wide range of styles from traditional folk, 

bluegrass, Latin and Eastern music, Celtic jigs and reels, all these elements are combined 

with global dance rhythms to produce energetic and glorious tunes!! They perform 

regularly at a wide range of festivals and venues around the Country, whilst also busking 

most Saturdays in town centres. They have played at Glastonbury Festival, Stainsby 

Folk Festival, The Larmer Tree Festival, Cafe Consort @The Royal Albert Hall in London 

to name a few. The band and their music were also featured in the BBC series ‘Down to 

Earth’, which has an accompanying soundtrack CD. The Huckleberries own CDs can be 

bought from their web site, and all have achieved a high volume of sales, well worth
