The history of Hangartner AG starts back in 1890 in Aarau, Switzerland,
when Kaspar Hangartner Senior founded a horse drawn carriage.
No one could imagine that this was the beginning of one of the most
famous intermodal operators of the Swiss transport industry. Today,
Hangartner stands for efficiency in combined transportation on the
European North-South-axis.

DB Schenker and Hangartner – both names have been cited in tandem with one and the other
for almost a decade. DB Schenker – the international player on the transport and logistics
market with a global network, Hangartner – the leading European specialist in combined
transportation. DB Schenker is renowned for its comprehensive air, ocean and European land
transportation network with sites in the most prominent economic regions of the world, as
well as for its contract logistics and supply chain management. Hangartner is distinguished
by its customer oriented transportation solutions and modern logistics concepts, having
established a high standard of intermodal logistics competency on the European Northern/
Southern route. Together these two proffer a unique combination of fast and efficient
solutions tailored to meet retail and industry customer requirements. Both are linked not

Hangartner operates 4,000 block trains per year on
the European North-South-axis. The logistics provider
first placed its focus on intermodal transportation
in the 1980s when it started to invest heavily in combined
transportation. Over the years Hangartner has
become one of the leading providers in the industry.
The close-knit co-operation between Hangartner AG
and Schenker Schweiz AG was forged in 2001 when
Deutsche Bahn acquired the intermodal company.
Four years later Schenker AG took over Hangartner
with its top-class infrastructure, highly qualified staff
and specialist combined transportation expertise.
With the conception of a new product for combined
transportation the consolidation of years of collaboration

services portfolio.
DB Schenker is the European market leader for land
transportation. This prominent position has been
earned by default of DB Schenker’s comprehensive
service scope which encompasses road and rail
transportation. With the inclusion of the new
product for combined transportation the product

faster and more efficient pre- and on-carriage.
DB Schenker profits likewise from the integration
of Hangartner’s top class rail infrastructure into
the DB Schenker network. Road merges into rail
and rail merges into road – a transport model with
a perspective which can only serve to benefit the

Daily departures and value added services.
The independent rail system operates chiefly from
Northern to Southern Europe starting in Scandinavia
and travelling via Central Europe to Italy and vice
versa. Due to the non-reliance on external equipment
DB Schenker can individually tailor solutions to meet
customer requirements.

between Northern and Southern Europe.
Besides transportation, DB Schenker also provides

The best of both worlds!
❚ Capacity
A gross vehicle weight of 44 tonnes is applicable
for lorries in continental Europe using combined
transportation, four tonnes more than by pure land
transportation. Swap bodies used in combined
transportation are up to 7.84 metres long. Hence,
two swap bodies can hold 36 palette storage slots.
Customers benefit: Increased volume and higher
weight per loading unit.
❚ Cost benefits
Higher volumes and more weight per loading unit
mean lower transport costs for the customer. Further
cost savings made by no toll-fees for the purely rail
based main haul are to the customer’s advantage.
❚ Punctuality
No delays caused by road traffic and no time wasted
at borders. Fewer Sunday, public holiday and nightrelated
limitations as rail transportation is generally
not subject to such restrictions.
❚ Flexibility
Customer oriented transportation planning and prioritisation
made possible through the centrally operated
independent rail system. 4,300 own loading units are
flexibly operated throughout Europe.
❚ Dangerous goods
Combined transportation simplifies the transportation
of dangerous goods on an individual basis, which results
in cost and time savings, particularly on the journey
through the Alps.
❚ Ecological factors
Environmental relief through the reduced consumption
of Diesel. Rail-based main haul transportation has a
