Rules of Thumb for Water Use on Lawns and Gardens
• One deep watering is much better than watering several
times lightly.
• Lawns need about 1 inch of water each week. If the weather
is very hot, apply an inch of water about every 3 days.
• Watering to a depth of 4-6 inches encourages deeper, healthier
root development. It allows longer periods between watering.
• To measure the water, put an empty tuna can (or cat food
can) on the lawn while watering. Stop watering when the
can is full or if you notice water running off the lawn.
Know Your Soil
Different soil types have different watering needs. You don't need to
be a soil scientist to know how to water your soil properly. These tips
can help.
• Loosen the soil around plants so it can quickly absorb water
and nutrients.
• Use a 1- to 2-inch protective layer of mulch on the soil
surface above the root area. Cultivating and mulching
reduce evaporation and soil erosion.
• Clay soil: Add organic material such as compost or peat
moss. Till or spade to help loosen the soil. Since clay soil
absorbs water very slowly, water only as fast as the soil
absorbs the water.
• Sandy soil: Add organic material to supplement sandy soil.
Otherwise, the water can run through it so quickly that
plants won't be able to absorb it.
...continued
• Loam soil: The best kind of soil. It's a combination of sand,
silt, and clay. Loam absorbs water readily and stores it for
plants to use.
Water at the Right Time of the Day
• Early moring or night is the best time for watering to reduce
evaporation.
• To help control where your water goes, water when it's not
windy.
Rules of Thumb for Proper Fertilizer Use
Fertilizers provide nutrients necessary for plant health and growth,
such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. These are what N, P, and
K stand for on bags of fertilizer. Nitrogen (N) is needed for healthy
green growth and regulation of other nutrients. Phosphorus (P) helps
proper roots and seeds develop and resist disease. Potassium (K) is
also important in root development and disease resistance. When
properly applied, the nutrients in fertilizers are absorbed by plants and
little of these nutrients enters ground or surface water resources.
Use the Right Fertilizer
Test your soil to find out what nutrients ar needed. Contact your local
Natural Resources Conservation Service or Cooperative State
Research, Education, and Extention Service office to get information
on obtaining a soil test. Local fertilizer dealers can also be helpful.
• A soil test will help you understand what your plants
require.
• Follow label directions.
• Choose a fertilizer that has at least one-fourth of the
nitrogen in a slow-release form, such as sulpher-coated
urea.
Mow Your Lawn Frequently
Leave the grass clippings to decompose on the lawn. Annually, this
will provide nutrients equivalent to one or two fertilizer applications.
Set mower at 2 inches to reduce water use during hot weather.
GARDENING AND GARDEN MAINTENANCE 2011
WEEDING
A few weeds in a lawn are no great problem – indeed, it can be
quite attractive to have a few daisies! However, a heavy infestation
by weeds, such as daisies, clover or speedwell can squeeze
out the grass, spoil the look of the lawn and reduce its ability to
withstand wear.
Weeds cope better than grass with low levels of soil fertility.
Starved grass is susceptible to competition from weeds, so feeding
the lawn is essential. Irregular ‘scalping’ of the lawn opens the
grass sward and allows weeds to become established. Too tight
mowing weakens the grass and this also gives weeds a chance.
Daisies and most other lawn weeds can grow flatter than lawn
grass and thrive on tight mowing. Regular mowing, using the
grass-bag, prevents existing weeds from seeding and spreading.
When weeds have become too dominant, a chemical lawn weedkiller
can be used to help restore the balance, but feeding will be
necessary as well. A variety of lawn weedkiller products is available.
Use a product contianing the active ingredient mecoprop to
control clover.
These contain similar active ingredients and are best applied in
fine, warm weather when growth is active. April, May and June
are ideal, but they can be applied between March and September
after warm weather when the soil is moist. Feeding the grass two
weeks before application improves results.
Combined feed and weed products work well and have the advantage
of convenience, but they can be expensive if a large area has
to be treated. The weedkilling function only works well in warm
weather.
Lawn sand is a traditional lawn tonic combining feeding and weed
suppression. Twenty parts clean sand, 3 parts sulphate of ammonia
and one part sulphate of iron is the formula. Ready made lawn
sand products are convenient to use.
Speedwell has pale blue flowers in April. It is quite difficult to
control. Lawnsand will give some control.
Mind-your-own-business or baby’s tears, or helxine is a common
weed of shady, damp corners. It spreads over the surface of the
soil swamping grass and will even climb over damp stones. Use
lawn sand.
SMALL TURNOUT SPARKS NEW BEGINNING
FOR YOUGHAL'S CONCERNED COMMUNITY GROUP
By Christy Parker
Potential beat apathy at the third meeting of the loosely titled
'traders/concerned citizens of Youghal' group at the Red Store on
Wednesday March 23rd. The apathy was reflected in a sparse
attendance of under a dozen. Potential emerged as those who did
attend opted to fight on and subsequently elected a chairman and
committee.
Unofficial chairman and organiser Jim Flanagan expressed his
"bitter disappointment" at the low turnout an asked how Youghal
could expect to "be sold to outsiders if it could not be sold to it’s
own people." It was suggested that Youghal has a history of starts
and disappearances and that locals needed to trust that when
something, however small, starts, it will continue. People had
been disappointed a lot but would eventually buy into permanence.
Meantime perhaps quality outpaces quantity, said a speaker.
Yet lingering over the early proceedings like an unwelcome smell
was the realisation that the gathering represented a splinter group.
"It has taken hold out there that this group seeks to replace another
group," said a speaker from the floor.
Not for the first -or 20th- time Mr. Flanagan reiterated that the
meetings were all inclusive, traders and non-traders, individuals
and organisations, etc., with the sole agenda being the betterment
of Youghal in whatever manifestation might evolve. "It has always
been about working with and alongside other groups. " he sighed.
Perhaps it's time to stop repeating the message given that it has
been voiced often enough for anyone who genuinely wants to listen
to have heard and understood it.
Fight or fold; The immediate question, Mr. Flanagan insisted,
was whether to decline or drive on. He would support any mandate
to carry on. It is unavoidable to break with common practice
and identify a speaker for the floor, given his input. Michael De
Buitleir said he was not just representing Comhaltas Craobh
Eochaille in its 21st year of promoting Irish music to tourists.
"Organisations do last in the town," he assured. He was also
attending as East Cork representative on Cork County Council's
Community and Voluntary Forum. Mr De Buitleir said a process
called Developing Areas was ongoing in the county council.
Youghal one day could be. Meanwhile places like Ballincollig,
Midleton and Carrigtwohill were having similar tribulations to
Youghal not least in regard to recruiting public participation. "In
modern society people don't want to get involved and we don't
know why," he observed.
Co-ordinate; From Mr De Buitleir's vastly experienced perspective,
the group needed a positive name, while the town needed its
common activities better co-ordinated. He argued that the group
should decide and prioritise its agenda, rather than chase several
rainbows at once and being an ad hoc movement. "Prioritise,
achieve and so lead by example," he advised. "We need to
acknowledge the groups in the town," he proceeded. He identified
that once citizens reached teenage years a certain reticence to participate
in public projects seemed to evolve, especially amongst
adults.
Meanwhile, he explained, forums such as this needed to be able
and poised to feed into the local authority and beyond into such as
the County Development Plan. He noted it was by necessity "a
long term commitment," and "might take two years to really kick
in."
Mr. Flanagan concurred with the sentiments but remained perplexed
as to how to get wide populace to "gel together", not least
given their absence. Co-organiser Kay Curtain said she had many
inquiries that day from people inferring they would be attending.
She was mystified as to where they were. Mr Flanagan asked,
"Are we going forward or not?" There was silence. "Ok, I'm going
to fight on. Is anyone joining me?", he asked changing tact. Mr De
Buitlier consolidated his willingness to be actively involved in the
group given it would work for the town's wider betterment and in
partnership with other groups. Someone asked whether there was
any update on a previous undertaking to discuss joining forces
with the Chamber of Commerce -in whatever format it now occupies.
There had been no report yet forthcoming.
The meeting deviated a little as to what name it might appropriately
assume. Titles such as 'Youghal Community Forum,' 'Youghal
Community Council' or even the more buoyant 'Youghal
Celebrates Youghal,' were mooted but the issue remains undecided.
Show of hands, chairman, committee… In due course Mr.
Flanagan called for a show of hands as to remain in existence or
not. The result was near unanimously affirmative. That resolved,
it was decided to elect a chairman and committee from those present.
Mr. Flanagan was proposed and elected. A committee was
then formed and comprises Adrian Hyland, Frank Murphy, John
Coleman, Ger Kennedy, Kevin Linehan and Michael De Buitleir.
It is intended to elect officers, i.e. PRS, secretary, etc. at the next
meeting. Thereafter it was intimated that an agenda will formally
be set and, it would seem, the foundations for an organised structure
were set. The night's bad beginning had morphed to a glad
conclusion and perhaps a new and better beginning to follow. The
next meeting will take place in the Red Store on Tuesday April
5th at 6 p.m.
YOUGHAL CYCLING CLUB
Club Spin - 27th March A foggy morning greated 26 members of
Youghal C.C. last Sunday morning when we lined up at Moby
Dicks for our weekly club spin. As happens every year, there was
always a few who forgot about the hour but 16 of those who did
remember, departed at 8.00am for Midleton with the final 10
departing at 10.00am for their weekly spin.
The first group of 16 were heading to Midleton to participate in a
charity ride for the Christchurch Earthquake Aid Appeal ( New
Zealand ) which was hosted by Midleton Wheelers. The Charity
ride was to entail a 80Km loop around East Cork and West
Waterford, but as we were getting in some training for the Mizen
To Malin Tour, we decided to cycle up to the event, take part in the
event and then ride home again afterwards. Suckers for punishment
eh!!
We rolled well from Youghal to Killeagh on the surprisingly cold
morning, and then as the sun broke through, onto Castlemartyr
and Midleton to greet the other 200 odd cyclists taking part in the
charity ride. Departing Midleton at 9.00am, the group rolled off at
a swift enough pace which was held until Castlemartyr before
things finally eased up. From there we slowly re-grouped the club
and rode onto Killeagh and Youghal before climbing the bye pass.
With the heart rates up, we dropped down to Rincrew roundabout
and climbed the Tallow road with the gentle breeze on our backs.
A good group had sat in with the Club by this stage and we dodged
the usual potholes on our way to Tallow. Turning left in Tallow, we
took the Midleton road and just started the accent when the KING
OF PUNCTURES had to go at it again. "Puncharello" Fitzgerald
made short work of his repair however and we were soon off again
on the long climb to Dungourney. From there we continued up the
final section of the BERG and rode a fast decent down into
Midleton for the completion of the event. Completion for some
maybe, but Youghal C.C. still had to cycle home, so a quick coffee
was necked at the garage on the Mill road and we took off
again for the road home in the ever increasing headwind. We all
however rode steady as a group and arrived back in Youghal for
12.45 with a challenging 130km completed. Hats off to Mark and
Greg who rode well all day with the group on their bling / bling
machines. Please also note that the club will shortly be organizing
a raffle in aid of the alarm clock appeal for the Club Secretary the
man had made a special effort to remind everyone about the hour
change on Saturday night only to forget himself. Nice one Doogle.
The second group of 10 also gathered at Moby Dicks last Sunday
morning at 10.00am for their weekly run. They covered a sheltered
route up the main Waterford road to the Shanachie before
turning left and dropping like stones down into Clashmore for the
coffee break. From there, they rode back through Piltown and
home the main road to Youghal for 12.30pm with a nice 50km
completed.
Ladies Spin The female side to the club got the pedals turning
again last Saturday when a group of three gathered at Moby Dicks
for their weekly spin. Departing at 9.00am, they took the main
road to Killeagh and back road to Mogeely and Castlemartyr
where they braked for a coffee. The returned to Youghal again via
Killeagh, completing a 25km spin. Keep it up Girls !! and more of
the same next week.
Birthday Wishes A very happy 30th Birthday to the man celebrating
his golden Birthday this week, Mr. Liam McLellan, from all at
the club. We hope to see you soon on a lovely new green bike, pacing
the group with Bulman up the VEE.
Midweek Spins. A number of club members have been hitting the
road during the week to get in some extra kms on the bike for the
upcoming Mizen to Malin challenge. Spins are usually organized
through the clubs Facebook page so anyone interested in going out
should keep an eye on the clubs Facebook page for details.
Alternatively you could just keep an eye out for John Bulman as
he seems to out on the bike every day !!
Club Website Information about the club, cycling in the area and
cycling in general, can be viewed at our club website. It has to be
seen by all at www.youghalcyclingclub.com.
Weekend Spins. As you are all well aware by now, there is a
weekly spin every Sunday morning at 8.00 am sharp leaving from
Moby Dicks Pub by the Clock Gate and covers on average of
between 90 to 120km. A second group also departs at 8.00am for
a 3 - 4 hour spin, and covers an 80 to 100km distance. A third
group also goes on a weekly spin every Sunday morning at
10.00am sharp leaving from Moby Dicks Pub by the Clock Gate.
This spin which runs on various routes every week usually takes
around 3 hours to complete and covers on average between 30 to
40km. The pace is again very comfortable. This is an ideal group
for anyone interested in taking up the sport. The Ladies group has
also now kicked off for the year with a weekly spin departing from
Moby Dicks every Saturday at 9.00am. New members or visitors
to the area are always welcome to any of the groups. If you have
any questions about the club or attending one of our weekend
spins, please contact our Club Secretary Jonathan at 086-8563292
for details. Until next week, safe cycling!.
YOUGHAL ATHLETIC CLUB
(Sponsored by Youghal Credit Union)
The following are the results and up coming fixtures of Youghal
Athletic club: First up we had the Janssen 4 mile road race on the
20th March under BHAA Rules. I noticed we lost some of our
athletes, not only from the club but also in our Quality Hotel team,
which was Niamh Walsh will be sadly missed. Best of Luck with
your future club! But we have seemed to have found a good
replacement in our team with a great performance from John
Malone bringing home the Quality hotel team to win first prize
with 34 points one point under the army of 35. The team was
Noel Curtin coming in at 8th place in a time of 22.32, closely followed
by Mossie Cahill in a time of 23.33 and not far behind John
Malone in a time of 23.41. I heard you all got great prizes but by
the looks of it Georgie seem to have robbed all the fake tan bottles
out of your hampers!
The summer is nearly here and I have tried on some of my summer
gear as I am back running a bit and it's a bit tight on me (that
bloody washing machine!) but no such problems for our two
forthcoming marathon runners "Marathon" Anne and Allie, who I
have passed out training on Sunday morning and it was like
watching an episode of off the rails with their gear change half
way through (just to say I don't watch off the rails, it just happens
to be on when I walk into the room!) - So best of luck in the
Limerick Marathon.
Also well done to one of our Irish athletes who has his critics, me
included sometimes, Alistair Cragg who broke the Irish half
marathon record in the New York half Marathon last week in a
time of 60.49, that's 4.38 minute miles. That's some clipping.
Here are some of the fixtures:
On Sunday 3rd April you have the 10k road race under BHAA
Rules in the Lee (straight road).
On Tuesday the 5th April you have one of the Ray Darcy 5k roadraces
which he is doing around the country in Cork.
On Sunday the 10th April you have the last in the 10 mile road
series up in Kilnaboy (it's a nice spin).
On the following Sunday the 17th April you also another 10 mile
road race in Cobh and in between the two of the them on the 15th
of April you have the Marine climb and it is a climb!
Also training starts in Killeagh woods on Monday the 4th of April
in the top car park at 7.00pm, all are welcome.
Now that I have my membership paid all other athletes membership
is due, contact Mossie Cahill for forms. Happy Running!
DeVALERA STREET RESIDENTS MEET
YOUGHAL TOWN COUNCIL
By Christy Parker
Youghal Town Council hosted a four-strong deputation plus two
individual representatives, from DeValera Street prior to the
March council meeting. The visitors were present to air their
views on the area's traffic problems and with further regard to the
council's failure to implement a traffic management plan accepted
by the council members last year but not formally adopted or
implemented. If nothing else, the residents were keen to have
some solution attempted, at least on a trial basis, by way of meeting
their concerns and requirements.
Presently and historically, DeValera Street is a two-way route.
However when parallel Church Street was closed three years ago,
the volume of downward traffic feeding onto the main street
increased, with residents estimating almost 400 cars traverse the
lane over three hours on a busy day. Of these, 90% travel the 'rat
run' via Ashe Street from Windmill Hill.
At present Church Street is open but amidst uncertainty as to
whether it is to remain so, the inhabitants of DeValera Street want
their street made one-way, upwards only. The dilemma facing the
council -and indeed the town - is where the downward flow of
drivers eager to avoid main street tailbacks can go instead.
Exchanges The chamber exchanges persisted for over 40 minutes.
It would take almost as long as driving the length of Youghal's
main street on a sunny summers' Saturday to relate the precise
details here so, with due respect, a 'rat run' version as follows
seems the wiser alternative!
Spokesman for the official deputation Larson Kelly argued that the
street's residents had been suffering an "intolerable" decline in
their quality of life. Vehicles were traversing the route at speed,
compelling pedestrians, including elderly and families, to walk in
the gutter or stand tight against walls, with intimidation from
impatient, discourteous drivers prevalent. The street's physical
structure was declining also. Despite residential spaces on a new
car park, some residents felt many safer using cars parked outside
their doors as safe 'buffer zones' against the flow. They wanted "a
commitment from the council to make DeValera Street one-way,"
upward and preferably with traffic calming measures, though this
aspect is not included in the Traffic Management Plan.
A female member of the deputation spoke of being "pushed up
against the wall of the car park" by a fast-driven car. She does "not
feel safe on the street" and sought solution, towards which she and
her colleagues would co-operate in any way needed.
Business traffic At that point, one of two representatives of a veterinary
practice and who were attending in a private capacity,
evoked a slightly different view. The speaker concurred with most
of what had been said but from a business perspective. He did not
support a one-way system that prohibited on-street parking and
furthermore directed traffic left into Ashe Street and on towards
Windmill Hill, as against turning right and down Church Street.
That aside, the speaker said his practice had elderly clients who
might not be suited to walking from the lane's car park to his business.
Furthermore, he argued, vets themselves would suffer from
dashing to and from the car park with supplies and equipment. He
strongly advocated a right turn with Church Street open, or else
"leave everything it as it is."
The second individual also advocated a one-way route downward
on Church Street, for cars only, by way of diluting the volume of
downward traffic between the two lanes and with DeValera Street
remaining two-way. Citing it "absurd" to direct traffic left through
Ashe Street, he said he had spoken to Church Street residents, who
were "quite happy" to have their street open to downward traffic.
"Funerals and ambulances," he added, "must come down one of
the streets anyway." The official deputation's view remained that
two-way on the street was not viable and insisted that 90% of the
traffic comprised "invalid, short cut" vehicles.
Councillors' thoughts Cllr Liam Burke asked if it would alleviate
the problem to have Church Street remain open for downward traf-

YOUGHAL TOWN COUNCIL
traffic. Mr Kelly said it would reduce traffic volume but not necessarily
improve safety on DeValera Street. Traffic calming measures
would be a requirement but the residents were open to experimentation
and trial initiatives.
Cllr Tommy O'Connell observed that were DeValera Street to run
upwards only, with Church Lane downwards, then the problem
would simply relocate to the other lane. Mr. Kelly agreed and said
he considered neither street suitable for heavy traffic.
Town Clerk Liam Ryan said the 'rat run' traffic was undeniably the
root cause and sought the residents' views on access to Ashe Street
from Windmill Hill being denied and DeValera Street and Church
Street remaining two-way. Thus only local traffic would frequent
the area. The residents said they would welcome the 'rat run' closure
but would still seek traffic calming. Cllr Eoin Coyne felt the
suggestion unviable on grounds of access to services in Emmet
Place, which would necessitate travelling through the increasingly
congested main street instead of Ashe Street.
Traffic calming
Cllr Barbara Murray advocated traffic calming measures in the
guise of "cushioning, as against ramps or rippling," the length of
Ashe Street. She felt this would make the 'rat run' an unattractive
alternative to impatient drivers, while still allowing access to business
and doctors' services in the area. She would prefer Church
Street closed, she added, but would consider the option of it being
opened for downward vehicles, along with DeValera Street
opened both ways and no n-street parking. "Cars parked on the
street contribute to the problem because they force pedestrians
onto the middle of the road," she observed. Cllr Murray believed
proper signage and traffic calming on the street would then greatly
alleviate the stress, as appears presently to be occurring in
Church Street.
Mr. Kelly wasn't overly impressed, citing the unimplemented
Traffic Management Plan as adequately meeting access to the
Emmet Place services, retaining Ashe Street as two-way and
removes the 'rat-run' by installing a one-way system upwards on
DeValera Street. He suggested special provision by way of a set
down space for the vet practice, from where clients could accessing
east Cork or Waterford by turning right at Windmill Hill from
Ashe Street. Meanwhile, the residents greatly appreciated the residential
car park spaces and would gladly avail of same if the need
to park by way of a buttress at their front door was removed.
Public consultation
As the discourse concluded, it was further established that Church
Street was previously -albeit legally- closed without public consultation
for what was intended as a temporary period. It persisted
for almost three years, in respect of road works and anticipated
works being undertaken in the vicinity. If it were to be closed
again, the full statutory requirement of public consultation would
first have to ensue.
The matter concluded with Mayor Mary Linehan Foley committing
that a council sub-committee (comprising all councillors)
would take place in a matter of weeks, at which a vote on the
Traffic Management Plan, amendments notwithstanding, would
be taken. This was later ratified to the vote being taken once a full,
nine-member council has convened through the co-option by Sinn
Fein of a replacement for new Dail Deputy Sandra McLellan.
Meantime the sub-committee meeting, attended also by traffic
engineer Eileen Coleman is scheduled for Tuesday March 29th at
10 am.
YOUGHAL TOWN COUNCIL MEETING MARCH 2011
By Christy Parker
The meeting proper was preceded by an official deputation and
two private residents from DeValera Street addressing the members
on traffic management in the area. See elsewhere in this issue
for report.
Town Clerk's Report: Youghal Landfill's Current Intake and
Operation:
Town Clerk Liam Ryan furnished the meeting with a report comprising
two items. He first delivered a written response from Liam
Singleton, Senior Engineer of Waste, Recreation and Amenity
with Cork County Council to recent concerns about odours feared
to be emanating from the Youghal Landfill site. This included the
following observations:
'The landfill's current intake is 500 tons per week, with disposal
waste only accepted Mondays to Fridays. Approximately 80% of
the waste is treated waste, while organic -or malodorous- waste
has been reduced to comply with new EPA standards. The working
face operates at 8m by 20m, while being allowed to work at
20m by 20m. Extra cover material has been acquired to ensure all
waste is adequately covered at every day's end.
Complaints on Tuesday Mar 8th 2011: Regarding complaints of
odours from the landfill, any odours in the Youghal town area
could not have been caused by the landfill as the weather records
show south westerly winds for that day. (see www.corkharbourweather.ie).
The wind would have carried any odours into County
Waterford!
Landfill Gas Extraction System and Emissions Survey: As previously
reported, a private form conducted a Volatile Organic
Carbon (VOC) survey at the landfill in 2010, to assess the success
of repair works undertaken on Cells 6, 7 and 8 in the capped section
of the landfill. The results showed all fugitive emissions had
been stopped.
Cell 9, the active and last cell, has approximately a six months
lifespan remaining at the current rate of intake. Landfill gas is
being extracted from this cell through 24 wells. The extraction
pressure has steadily increased since December 2010 from 3mBar
to 24mBar in March 2011, thus ensuring increased capture of gas
from within the waste body. The system is monitored daily to
ensure optimum running conditions. Meanwhile site staff test the
gas twice weekly and adjust the gas field to ensure areas of high
concentration have adequate suction.'
Town Clerk's Report: Sinn Fein Co-option in lieu of Deputy
Sandra McLellan: Mr Ryan referred to the statutory resignation
of her town council seat by former Cllr Mclellan upon here election
to Dail Eireann and the co-option of a replacement. He said
the vacancy must be filled by the co-option of a person nominated
by the party of the same political party. The nomination must
be submitted by the General Secretary of Sinn Fein to the town
clerk not later than 4.30 pm on Thursday April 7th for inclusion on
the agenda for the April meeting on Tuesday 12th.
Votes of Congratulations: Mayor Mary Linehan Foley congratulated
constituency Deputies McLellan, Stanton, Sherlock and
Barry on their general election successes. The councillors and the
town Patricia Power individually recorded their congratulations to
Deputy McLellan. Cllr Michael Beecher also congratulated
Youghal Pitch and Putt Club on its 25th anniversary.
Votes of Sympathy: Condolences are normally conveyed privately
but at Cllr Michael Beecher's behest, the chamber observed
a minute's silence in respect of the traumatic events in Japan. It
was also agreed to Mayor Linehan-Foley's suggestion that
Youghal Town Council officially convey its sympathy on behalf of
the town to the Japanese embassy and to open a book of condolences
on behalf of that country's people.
Town Foreman's Report: Cllr Liam Burke observed that light
No. 10 on North Main Street was out, sought a spelling correction
on the name plaque at Srathan na Sali and said the junction of
Kilcoran Road and Seafield Road needed a Yield sign.
Cllr Michelle Hennessy asked when the lights at the new houses
at Sweetfield would be fully connected both at the entrance and
within. She said light numbers 17 and 18 on the Jail Steps were
flickering, while no 16 was gone entirely. The councillor proceeded
that the step area was "a disgrace." She had witnessed enough
illegally dumped waste to require a skip had seen rats scavenging
on what is "part of our main tourist trail." She asked for an update
on a disabled parking space required for 38 Raheen Park and noted
that a wall at Summerfield Cross needed repairing and a seat
restored following an accident there some months ago.
Fillings and fixtures Cllr Tommy O'Connell, as he had done at
February's meeting, criticised the "disgraceful" filling material
being used on potholes. He said it was attaching itself to wheels
and footwear and being transported from the potholes into people's
homes. He challenged the town manager and the town engineer
to witness the evacuated loose pebbles of darkness in the
vicinity of the Old Imperial Hotel, Watson's Corner or -100 metres
away- the Mall Lane. There was no indication that the invitation
would be accepted.
Cllr Beecher concurred with Cllr O'Connell, before asking when
100 Blackwater Heights would be ready to accept a tenant that
was very eager to move in. He described wires hanging from the
ceiling and walls and urged that the contractor complete the
works. The councillor said he thought CCTV was to have been
installed on the Jail Steps and complained that public lighting was
constantly on in Park Mountain between Chickley's Road and
Pobalscoil na Trionoide.
Cllr Eoin Coyne said light no 10 at Prospect Farm was also out.
"Is there a problem with the service provider?" he asked.
Mayor Linehan-Foley inquired whether there was any update on
the illegal dumping at the Tesco recycling facility near Gallagher's
Mews. Cllr Coyne said he had spoken to Tesco's Community liaison
officer and was awaiting further contact. The mayor supported
Cllr O'Connell's concern regarding a large pothole, unsuccessfully
filled, at Watson's Corner. She too questioned the quality of
the filling.
County Council Items: Town engineer Paul Murray provided the
following report from February's submissions: Potholes are being
filled throughout town an ongoing basis; the reservoir cleaning at
Cork Hill was complete. The pipes for the front strand outfall were
ordered and the task would begin when the tides allowed.
Cllr Coyne complained of two large pothole on Haymon's Hill of
some months vintage. He said the bins at Claycastle were overflowing
the previous week. Mr Murray responded that staff empty
the bins on a Monday and Friday but there had been a training
course on that occasion. The councillor also observed that the
footpath leading from Quain's Terrace was in bad repair.
Unlucky dips Cllr Beecher referred to "massive potholes" on the
promenade and potholes also persisted on Strand Street. He said
there was a lot of illegal dumping occurring at Muckridge parallel
to the bypass. The councillor asked "what in Heaven's name is
happening between Youghal and Killeagh?!" in reference to road
resurfacing in which a series of 'dips' over the previous weekend
lacked warning signage. The engineer felt less than responsible,
saying it was an NRA project and in any case there were 60 km
per hour speed warnings in place. Cllr Beecher said there had been
enough of them and even that limit was too dangerous. The councillor
then compared Cork County Council's response to the repair
requirements on the Tallow Road unfavourable with the "massive
surface" being rolled out by its Waterford counterparts on the
Deise sections. Mr Murray replied that the Cork side had only just
received Non National Road funding for the area and an overlay
would be conducted "this season." (A season translating generally
as May-Sept).
The town clerk interceded that funding from all quarters had been
greatly reduced, with Youghal's €195,000 Non-National Road
Grant allocation of €195,000 for 2011, down from €300,000 two
years ago. He said it was councillors should relay their concerns
over local government funding and the provision of services to
their party colleagues in government.
Cllr Revins asked that "a piece of tarmacadam sticking out in

YOUGHAL OWN COUNCIL MEETING MARCH 2011
Tallow Street" be remedied in the interests of car safety. The
mayor said she had been assured by Cork County Council official
Jack McCarthy that he would refer back to her on the issue but he
had not done so. Cllr Beecher said a similar situation existed near
Tesco's before Cllr Revins also alluded to a wall at the GAA club
that "is actually falling down."
Cllr Burke referred to "the usual list of broken footpaths" (Tallow
Street South Main Street and the junction of South Abbey/Strand
Street) of some years' standing. He asked of the long tome "missing
concealed interest for Summerdale Lawn and was delighted at
the engineers; report that it was "in the yard."
Blame and boxes Cllr. O'Connell blamed Fianna Fail for the
dearth of road funding and further reflected that the same party
had not so long ago "tried to abolish urban councils." Mayor
Linehan Foley corrected that that had been the Green Party's pursuit.
It emerged that while the mayor had the past two years in
mind, Cllr O'Connell was referring to the 1970's. "That's 40 years
ago. I wasn't even born then!" reacted Cllr Coyne. "It's your (FF)
policies that put the country where it is," retorted Cllr O'Connell
before the mayor called order on the reminiscing. Cllr O'Connell
said he would be communicating his concerns on funding to his
(Labour) party colleagues in government. "And the need for more
power for local authorities as well," he added.
Cllr Hennessy asked for an update on a yellow box required at 5
Fitzgerald's Terrace. The town engineer said he would attend to it
when the road liners were around. The councillor asked that the
bottom of Cork Hill receive road maintenance and Mr. Murray
replied that it would be included in the main street resurfacing
works later this year.
Mayor Linehan-Foley asked of the road liners could re-paint a disability
space at 38 Raheen Park as it's use was being abused, causing
great stress and inconvenience to the person for whom it was
intended.
Mayor's Business: It was agreed that the sitting mayor and
deputy-mayor at the time, would perform the chair and vice-chair
functions for the upcoming twice-yearly Joint Police Committee
meetings.
Unresolved Motion Report. Cllr Revins asked how long the traffic
management review for the Frogmore area was going to linger,
considering he had raised the matter in 2008. Pobalscoil na
Trionoide was functioning in the area and an application for new
day care centre was imminent. The town clerk said a traffic count
could take place but there were no funds available for a crossing
area, "unless you provide it from the next budget." Cllr Revins
also asked when the traffic lights for Cork Hill would be installed,
as had been once agreed. He understood the lights were lying idle
in the county council yard. However, it was clarified that after
complication emerged through concerns submitted from businesses
in the area at the time, followed by local elections, the issue was
never fully concluded. Hence there were no traffic lights stored in
the council yard. It remained inexplicable why the issue had disappeared
from the Unresolved Motions list but meanwhile the
town clerk would submit a cost estimate for future consideration.
Notice under Section 38 of the Road Traffic Act 1994 "Closure
of Part of Chapel Lane to Vehicular Traffic": It was unanimously
agreed to proceed with this measure.
Wildlife Acts 1976 and 2000; "Restrictions on the Destruction
of Hedgerows and the Destruction of Vegetation on
Uncultivated Land": Town Manager Patricia Power warned that
the Department of Environment was very strict on this legislation
and would briskly prosecute violators, including those famers and
local authorities who contravened it with hedge-cutting and such.
Motion in the name of Cllr. Coyne seconded by Cllr. Linehan
Foley:
"That this Council as a matter of public safety and coastal protection,
call upon Cork County Council to investigate the possibility
of fully restoring the public viewing areas at the Forty Nine Steps
and Moll Goggin's Corner:
The motion was amended to exclude the option of permanently
closing off or removing the areas. Cllr Coyne said the viewing
areas had been closed off due to safety concerns, with unattractive
metal railings infringing on their scenic effect. He elaborated that
the areas are "in danger of falling into the sea" due to erosion. He
called on the county council to restore what were popular tourist
assets, as soon as possible. The mayor insisted that the viewing
areas should be restored and maintained, citing he valued role they
have traditionally played in Youghal tourism.
Any Other Business: Cllr Revins expressed the hope that Sinn
Fein would select a Youghal member to replace Deputy Sandra
McLellan as its county council representative. "It's only fair as it
has been a Youghal-based seat," he argued Cllr Hennessy concurred,
although also accepted that it is "an east Cork seat" and has
a wider constituency.
ATHLETICS PERSON OF THE MONTH
AWARD GOES TO NIKITA SAVAGE
By John Walshe
There was a further honour bestowed on a young Youghal athlete
recently when she was selected as the Cork City Sports Athletics
Person of the Month for January.
Nikita Savage from Sarsfield
Terrace has been literary scaling
the heights in the technically
demanding discipline of the pole
vault for the past three years and
this prestigious award came as a
fitting tribute to this dedicated
athlete
Nikita received the award at the
River Lee Hotel for winning the
Munster Junior Indoor title for
the fourth year in a row and she
now holds all the Munster pole
vault records, indoors and outdoors,
from U17 to seniors apart
from the outdoor senior mark.
Her record sequence speaks for
Nikita Savage with her award
itself: Munster Junior Indoor Record, 3.51m; Munster Junior
Outdoor Record, 3.40m; Munster Senior Indoor Record, 3.51m;
Munster Youths Indoor Record, 3.00m; Munster Youths Outdoor
Record, 3.30m.
The acquisition of the outdoor mark should only be a matter of
time for the First Year Sports Science pupil at DCU who won’t
turn 19 until July. Her personal best of 3.51m was achieved in
Cardiff last year and no doubt her main target for the year ahead
will be Erin Kinnear’s Irish record of 3.77m.
In May, Nikita travels to Belgrade as a guest of Ferrybank AC to
compete in the European Clubs Championships and she has
already represented her country on six occasions in Celtic Cups
and schools competitions.
Dick Hodgins, Chairman of the Cork City Sports, said that the
pole vault was an event which we don’t associate much with Cork,
but that should change from now on.
“For the past number of years Nikita has been going higher and
higher and we are delighted to award her with the Athletics Person
of the Month for January. We wish her the very best in the
European Clubs and also in the Inter-Varsities and we will be following
you progress with interest during the coming season,” he
said.
Dick Hodgins also said it was great to see the award going out to
one of the smaller clubs in the county and he also congratulated
Nikita’s coach, Eamon Flanagan, who has brought her to such a
high standard in a short few years. “We are also delighted to have
your family here today as every young athlete needs family support
and you certainly have that,” he added.
John McHale, Sports Editor of the Evening Echo, said Nikita was
following in the footsteps of such famous names as Derval
O’Rourke, Olive Loughnane and Robert Heffernan as previous
winners of the award and he wished her every success for the
future.
Tony O’Connell, PRO of the Cork City Sports, welcomed all the
guests and congratulated Nikita, also paying a special tribute to
her coach, Eamon Flanagan, saying “behind every successful athlete
is a successful coach and we should always remember that.”
Indeed, Eamon Flanagan’s expertise in the intricacies of coaching
the pole vault event was marked recently when he was appointed
as National Coach for the event.
Nikita thanked all those involved in the presentation, saying it was
an honour to receive the award and mentioning in particular her
family, club and coach.
Attending the function were Nikita’s parents, Peter and Anne, her
sister Isha, along with her grandmother Pauline Plante, aunts Nora
Daly and Mary Griffin, and uncles Peter and Patrick Plante.
LUCKY GIANT LOBSTER LIVES
TO CLAW ANOTHER DAY
By Christy Parker
A giant lobster has been preserved
from the pot after Youghal
fisherman Kevin Muprhy decided
he was too admirable to die.
Kevin, from Store Street, was
fishing for ray a mile and a half
off Youghal beach when he discovered
the massive crustacean
amongst his catch. "I'd caught
heavier lobster before but never
one as big as this one was,"
recalls Kevin. "He would actually
have been too big to enter a lobster pot."
The monster lobster turned out to be 31 inches long and weighed
just over 10½ lbs. To illustrate the creature's rarity the average lobster
measures less than a foot and weighs under 2 lbs. Lobsters
grow by about 15% each time through a repeated moulting
process and Lucky, as Kevin's crusty catch was christened, may
have been about 60 years old. That would make him 14 years older
than the man who captured him!
The lobster appeared weak when caught, probably from his efforts
to untangle from the net. After visiting Kevin's house where he
posed for photos with Kevin's eight-year-old daughter Emily, the
sea celebrity must have feared the worse when he found himself
brought to Ahern's renowned seafood restaurant on the main
street. It is well known in the underwater world that lobsters don't
return from Aherne's! However kind-hearted Kevin only wanted
him recuperated. "I couldn't be so heartless as to eat such a great
survivor" says Kevin, "not that he'd be likely to taste very good
that age anyway!"
Owners Fitzgibbons provided a special holding thank into which
Lucky barely fitted. Two days later, having survived his 'death
row' experience, John Griffin of local sea training school Aquatrek
transported him back to his original location.
Before releasing Lucky, Kevin made a special 'V' shape on his tail,
indicating he be returned to the sea if caught again. The practice is
associated with protecting pregnant females of the species but
Kevin hopes it will extend to Lucky if need be.
It was the second unusual lobster find in a year for Kevin. Last
June he hauled in a 10 lb rare light pink female specimen which
he also notched and released.
Lobster fact: Research suggests lobsters may not slow down or
weaken with age and older lobsters are more fertile than younger
ones. It has even been speculatively claimed that they could live
indefinitely if they managed to avoid injury or disease. According
to the Guinness Book of Records, the largest lobster ever caught
was landed in Nova Scotia in 1934. He was 3.51 feet long and
weighed 44.4 lbs.
VHI Cúl Camps 2011
Preparations are already underway for our VHi Cúl Camp running
over 5 days (15th - 19th of August). This will be launched on the
2nd of April by Christy Cooney at Club Arás. All Welcome.
St. Patrick's Day 17th March. We had a superb turn out for St.
Patrick's Day and thanks to all the children that turned out and
made such a fantastic effort on behalf of the club. Our new
Mascot was also on display (Moby Óg, designed by Aoife Farrell
4th Class Bunscoil). We had a fabulous party back in the club for
the kids and music by DJ Barry.
18th of March - Charity White Collar Boxing Nighat at Club
Arás: Youghal G.A.A Club goes Ceasars Palace for a Night
Yes you read it right, Youghal G.A.A Club was transformed on
Friday night last the 18th of March into a boxing stadium as good
as you would see anywhere. All the stops were pulled out for this
Charity boxing event featuring local talent and our very own players
to help raise funds for both Club training fund and the very
worthy cause that is St. Vincent de Paul. A professional sound and
lighting system were put in place over two Days to enhance the
project and make it a night to remember.
The night opened with a Girls fight which saw Ballymacoda's
Karen O'Sullivan narrowly defeat Fermoy's Kelly Carroll in a
fiercely fought three rounder.
Next into the ring was our very own Conor Coleman who took
care of the big hitting Rocky Lucas from St. Colemans boxing
Club. Conor came out of the traps very quickly and despite taking
some heavy punishment held on for the victory. Bout 3 welcomed
two up and coming stars to the ring, with Garry Kavanagh of
St.Frances boxing Club and Damien Laffen of St. Colemans going
toe to toe. Our next home grown fighter into battle was none other
than Barry the bone crusher Ring who lived up to his name pounding
his opponent nearly to submission in the first round but experience
told in the end and Barry was narrowly defeated.
Following this was one of the main events of the evening with
Youghal's All Ireland Champion Adam Curley taking on and
defeating the well fancied Clive O'Mahony of St. Francis. This
was a classy fight with both boxers in superb form. Unfortunately
for bout 6 Damien Rings opponent failed to show and by the look
in Damiens eye he can count Himself very lucky not to have
shown. Bout 7 saw none other than multi award winning Declan
Quinn from Youghal take on Noel Murphy from Macroom. Declan
started well but was staying well within himself as he had to travel
to Dublin to fight again on the Saturday, and was defeated on a
split judgement. Next into the ring was Patrick the handsome one
O'Mahony to take on Wes Healy the experienced fighter from
C.I.T. Patrick struggled with the surface and slipped several times
during the fight. Pa lost narrowly which left the crowd puzzled as
they thought he had taken the points in every round. The main
thing though Ladies, is the good looks are intact, as I know a few
of you were worried.
Next up was none other than the main Man behind the idea and the
organisation of the night Mr. Ken the bruiser Dempsey. Ken
fought against another experienced opponent in C.I.T.'s Eoin
Murphy. Ken gave himself too much to do after the opening
round, and said himself, he gave his opponent too much respect.
Unfortunately for Ken their will be no rematch as He turned the
enviable age of 35 on the Monday, which rules him out of future
contests.
Local legend Barry Walsh next graced the ring against Paddy
McCarthy of Brian Dillons. Both these Guys although very Young
are well experienced with Barry's footwork superb which kept his
chin intact and his opponent always under pressure.
Barry Goggin was next into action and entered the ring like a
World Heavyweight Champion saluting the Crowd to huge roars
of support. Barry had the unenviable task of taking on well known
circuit boxer Mike Fouhy. The punches landing could be felt in the
Car Park in the first round, and unfortunately for Mike he received
a cut over his left eye and the fight had to be stopped. To tremendous
applause and cheers Barry's Daughter entered the ring to give
Dad a big hug.
Club Night Friday Next 1st April
We will be presenting St. Vincent De Paul with their cheque on
Friday next in relation to the Charity Boxing Night. We will also
be viewing the DVD of the night and this will be our first club
night.
Killeagh-Ita's Juvenile GAA
Nach raibh an aimsir go h-álainn i rith na seachtaine seo caite!
Mighty weather for hurling, footballing and fresh cut grass. And
now with the prospect of bright evening for the next 6 months, we
have nothing to be complaining about! Conas ar eirigh leis ár
mbuachaillí? Seo iad na scéalta.
Fé 10 Peil Our 22 U-10 footballers beat the clock and made it to
Cobh for 1100hrs BST on Sunday morning last, for a most enjoyable
morning of football. We followed the successful format of
each fielding 2 teams, with each of our teams playing each of the
opposition teams in two 25 minute games. The sun was shining,
the ball was bouncing, and we saw lots of tackling, lovely soloing,
teamwork and points and goals a-plenty from all four teams.
Honours ended evenly, with Dan Beechinor (fantastic catch), Karl
O'Toole (brilliant interception and blockdown) and Owen
Cosgrove (busy and hungry all through) catching the eye for our
teams. In truth, all 22 played really well, and the work done over
the past 12 months is now starting to show on the pitch. Well done
boys!
Fé 14 Iomáint The Fé 14 hurling league commenced on Sunday
March 27th with a difficult trip to Inniscarra. This proved to be a
tight encounter with very little between the sides from start to finish.
Killeagh-Ita's started brightly with a point from Andrew
Leahy in the first minute. This was added to with a point from Dan
Landers on 8 minutes. The home side struck for the next 2 scores
including a goal to take the lead. Cathal Deane, who was playing
well at wing back, was injured after 25 minutes and had to be
replaced by Luke Fogarty. This setback did not deter the Killeagh-
Ita's boys who hit 3 unanswered points before half time to lead at
the break on a score line of 0-05 to 1-01. The second half was
equally well contested with both sides swapping scores. Dan
Landers proved to be the chief tormentor with another 4 points
including 1 very well taken score following great teamwork
involving Killian Treacy and Mikey O'Sullivan. However
Inniscarra were never out of it and a 21 yard free could have put
them level but for an excellent save by Darragh O'Brien. The
backs, most notably Corey Broderick and Kevin Murphy, along
with Sam Desmond and Killian Treacy in midfield worked hard to
protect our slender lead in the last 10 minutes. The insurance score
came from the stick of Jack O'Rourke after an excellent run and
pass by Mikey O'Sullivan. The final whistle sounded shortly after
this to leave Killeagh-Ita's winners by 0-12 to 1-05. This was a
tough opening to our league campaign but everyone worked hard
to ensure we got off to a winning start. Next up we face a trip to
Blarney on Sunday 3rd April to take on the locals in the first round
of qualifying for Féile 2011 hurling, with the reward for the winners
being a home tie against Fr. O'Neills the following weekend.
Go n-eirí libh!
Fé 15 Iomáint League We crossed swords with our local rivals
Midleton last Saturday in this league game. Our "Dan the Man(s)",
Smiddy and Landers got us off to a brilliant start on home soil
with four sweet points (2 each) in the opening minutes. Midleton
registered their opening points from a well taken free, followed by
a nice shot from the wing. Eoghan Keniry's luck was in on the day
as he stepped up to take a long range free and after striking beautifully
it sailed to the back of the Midleton net. We further
increased our tally with points from Gary and Padraig before
Eoghan struck for his second goal of the game. We were dominating
play now and increased our lead by securing a further 1-3,
before Midleton upped their game and fought back with 1-3 of
their own. The ref recorded a further four points to two in our
favour before he closed the little black book and blew the half time
whistle, registering a 3-11 to 1-6 scoreline. The opening twenty
minutes of the second half were nip and tuck with both teams
defending well and displaying the finer elements of the game.
Both teams added 1-3 each to their credit. In the closing ten minutes,
we secured a further five beauties from our forwards, leaving
the field of play with a tally of 4-19 to 2-9, plus the league points
in the bag, as the man in black sounded the feadóg for the final
time.
Fé 18 Iomáint Our minor squad faced Cumann Cluain Uamha in
a challenge on Sunday evening last. The Sunday roast was well
digested as these young men took the field of play and served up
a tough hard-fought game. Matthew Murphy took the limelight in
the opening stages as he slotted over our first three points. Cloyne
got off the mark and on the scoreboard after converting their opening
two frees, but these were to be their only scores of this half.
We hurled well in the closing quarter, with Kevin Hurley adding
1-1 to our tally and two further points, one each from Dinny Walsh
and again Matthew, leaving it 1-6 to 0-2 in our favour as the short
whistle sounded. The second half lost a little tempo but both teams
plugged on and exchanged points in a tit for tat fashion, with the
boys in green keeping their noses in front as Cloyne fought back
with some well executed points. Goal number two came for us in
the closing minutes which gave us a little breathing space and the
momentum to finish out in style with a 2-10 to 0-11 tally.
Late of 21, Dominic Collins Place, Youghal.
Remembrance is a golden chain
Death tries to break, but all in vain.
To have, to love, and then to part
Is the greatest sorrow of one's heart.
The years may wipe out many things
But some they wipe out never.
Like memories of those happy times
When we were all together.
Always in our hearts, your loving wife & family.
Dear Heart of Jesus
In the past I have asked for many favours , this time I ask for
a special one . Take it dear heart of Jesus and place it within
merciful eyes it will become your favour not mine. Amen
