Superintendent’s Message
Karen M. Donahue, Superintendent
Great news...Lyme CSD Green
House is built and about to become a place
filled with growing plants. Our students, Mr.
Demster, Mr. Davis and Mr. Taylor did a
great job making this a reality. Thank you
gentlemen and ladies!
You may also notice lots of
construction activity on our new softball field and soccer fields...the construction
company is working diligently to finish up their work and we are hoping to be the proud
new occupants in the next few weeks.
May is a very busy month at Lyme Central. We
hope you will enjoy some of the great activities
scheduled...stop by to watch a baseball or softball game,
come to the spring concert, view the county-wide Art Show
at the State Office Building, come to our book fair and
reading week activity, or just enjoy the playground and a
walk on Lyme Lane.
We are also in the midst of spring testing.
Our staff and students have worked hard to surpass
the expectations of NYS. This is a very tall order as
so many changes have occurred. During May
students will take elementary and Regents level field
tests in Math, ELA, and the annual Science test. We
are proud of the effort shown by our students to “do
their best”.
Greetings!
The final weeks of school are quickly approaching. It seems to be that
May and June are the busiest months of the year. The testing season
continues with NYS testing in Science for students in grades 4 & 8. This will be
occurring late May and early June. Our secondary teachers are gearing up for
the Regents examinations. A schedule of these exams as well as review
classes for Regents exams will be published in our June Newsletter. Final
exams will be held late May.
Secondary students with disabilities have an opportunity to attend a
workshop at JCC on May 21, from 9:00-1:00 PM. The conference is entitled
“The Keys Conference”. The purpose of this conference is to educate
participants about money management and interviewing skills as part of their
transition from school to the world of work and to the world of higher education.
Information regarding this conference will be coming home shortly for students
of the intended audience.
Enjoy the sunshine!
Counseling Center—May 2013
Submitted by Jennifer Durr
Summer and College Exploration: Juniors are at a crucial time in terms of
college selection. The summer is a wonderful time to visit colleges and attend open
house programs and to go on campus tours. Call the admissions offices of the
colleges your son/daughter is interested in to find out more information. Visiting
colleges is the best way to determine if a college is the right choice!
College Visits: Lyme Central was invited to participate in the College Access
Challenge Grant Program, working with Syracuse University to support first generation
college students and their families in the college planning and admission process.
Students visited Syracuse University as a part of this experience. Students interacted
with current college students to learn more about student life at college, learn more
about the financial aid process, and gain information regarding college and career
readiness skills. We are grateful to SU for inviting our students to be a part of this
program!
College Admissions Exams: Hopefully by now, juniors who are interested in
applying to 4-year colleges in the fall have taken the required college admissions
exams. If not, there is one more opportunity to register for the Scholastic Aptitude Test
(SAT). The test is offered on June 1, 2013, at Watertown High School, and the
deadline to register is May 7. Students must register on the collegeboard website at
www.collegeboard.org. Students may also register to take the American College Test
(ACT) that is offered on June 8 th at JCC, and the deadline to register is May 3rd. Go to
www.actstudent.org for registration materials and more information.
Summer Programs: The Counseling Office has information about summer
programs that are offered through various colleges and universities. These programs
are usually enrichment programs that assist students in exploring a particular career
field of interest. Students are required to apply to the program, and there is a cost
involved. Contact Mrs. Durr for more information, or go to the www.lymecsd.org
website and click on “Departments” then “Guidance” and then the “Summer Programs”
link!
Course Advisement for Next Year: All students have met with Mrs. Durr to
discuss their schedules for the next year. Parents may log in to the parent portal of our
student management software, Web 2 School, to view your child’s course requests for
the next year. There may be additional elective courses that are created over the
summer, so some students may see classes in their schedules that reflect some new
course offerings. Students schedules for the 2013-2014 school year will be available
to view on the parent portal (they will not be sent home) the last week in August.
Please contact Mrs. Durr with any questions at jdurr@lymecsd.org, or 649-2417.
JCC Star Program: The STAR Summer Bridge program is for students
entering JCC in the Fall of 2013, and who will need developmental coursework in
English or Reading (ENG 099 or CLS 099). To qualify for this program, students must
be a first generation college student (neither parent has a 4-year degree), or have a
learning disability, or meet the income guidelines. See Mrs Durr for more information!
8th Graders and Parents: Please contact the Counseling Office to set up your
4-year high school plan. Letters were sent home the first week in April with more
information.
Jefferson County Department of Employment and Training Summer Youth
Employment Program: This program is open to students age 14-21, and is available
on a first come, first serve basis. Applications are available from Mrs. Durr, or can be
downloaded at www.jefflewisworkforce.com.
Summer Volunteer Opportunities: The Samaritan Medical Center is looking
for students who would be interested in volunteering at the hospital. This is a great
opportunity for students to learn more about the health care field, and to give back to
their community. See Mrs Durr for more information! Applications are due June 14.
The New York State Zoo at Thompson Park Junior Docent Program: These
are teen volunteers who help with educational programs at the zoo. Students will get
training in public speaking and animal handling at the zoo. Students must commit to a
training and assist with the Zoofari Camp. See Mrs. Durr for more information and an
application.
Jump Rope for Heart
Submitted by Mary Guyette and David Baker
It was the best year ever for jumping and raising funds! Lyme Central raised
$2,654 for the American Heart Association! Mrs. Wagenaar’s class raised $603.61
and will enjoy a pizza party. Ale’ Marolf was the top individual fundraiser for the
second straight year with $204 in donations. Other students who raised over $100
were Xena Skipper, Daveigh Robbins, Alex Slate, Logan Pettey, Zachary and
Derrick Goutremout.
On Thursday, March 21, Meg Gibbons came to Lyme to showcase her jump roping .
The students had a great time and always look forward to seeing Meg every year.
Thank you for all who supported and participated in the Jump Rope for Heart event.
You have made a difference in the lives of so many people!
Alumni Dinner
Submitted by Marilyn Peters
The Lyme Central School Alumni Dinner will be held this year on June 1, at the
Chaumont Fire Hall. A social hour will extend from 4:30-6:00 PM, dinner from 6-7 PM, and a
business meeting from 7:00-7:45 PM.
We are returning to the first weekend of June, as the fire hall venue is not workable
on the second weekend this year. We are very happy with this location for our dinner, and
we do not want to change it.
We are anxious to receive updated names and addresses from alumni. This is very
easy to do on the Lyme Central School website. Click on the COMMUNITY tab, then click on
the ALUMNI page. Complete the form, and you are done!
Notes from the Nurse
Chris Lachenauer, RN
Spring has finally arrived and the end of the school year is near so this
month’s topic is on what your child entering Pre-K or Kindergarten will need
before school starts in September.
1. For Pre-K and Kindergartener’s who didn’t attend Lyme Pre-K they will need a physical
performed by your child’s physician. The office appointments fill up fast so you should
call now to make the appointment for their physical and any necessary immunizations.
2. Copy of your child’s immunization records: they will need boosters to enter Kindergarten
and NYS requires that their immunizations are current within 2 weeks of starting school
or they may have to be excluded from class.
3. Copy of your child’s birth certificate.
4. Dental certificate completed by your child’s dentist (this is a request only, not a
requirement).
5. Copy of your child’s lead screening results. This must be in their chart and is required by
New York State.
6. BMI (body mass index) results, this is on the physical form and is also required by the
state. Your doctor should complete this at the time of their physical.
If you have any questions please feel free to call me at 649-2417 or email
lachenauer@lymecsd.org and I will get back to you as soon as possible.
