Holger at the Helm
Holger Petersen in conversation with TBS
President Derek Andrews on the occasion of
Stony Plain's 35th Anniversary
DA: Congratulations on your thirty fifth
anniversary of Stony Plain. As I try to frame
your thirty fifth anniversary I am reminded
of the Paul Simon song "Still Crazy After All
These Years". While no one would call your
temperament 'crazy' Holger, do you feel that
the current recording industry climate makes
for a certain determination and perseverance
to stay in the business?
HP: Yes, it’s all a bit crazy. It has changed
but you’ve always needed determination and
perseverance – especially in blues and roots
music. We’re fortunate to have a catalog of
timeless music and incredible artists that I think
at the top of what they do. The quality stands out
at the end of the day. Sales are down and all of
us have been making adjustments. Recording
budgets have gotten smaller and it’s harder for
new artists to reach an audience.
What is the ratio of the Stony Plain sales ratio
with regard to physical sales vs digital? Are you
finding your customer base is moving with the
industry trend to move toward downloads?
The radio for most blues releases for digital
income in North America is 10% to 15%. The
odd one is higher. The customer base has been
slow to move and has unfortunately leveled off.
Most other parts of the world are even lower.
What do you see in your travels with regard
to Canadian blues audiences? Are new fans
coming to the blues? Does the aging of the
demographic concern you?
I find there are young people coming to the
blues through festivals and bands like the Black
Keys, Monkey Junk, Jam Bands and artists
like Jack White. Aging is a concern since the
younger demographic don’t buy as many CDs
and there are a couple generations that are now
used to getting music for free. It’s tough on
labels but especially on creators of music of all
ages. I’m still optimistic that the unique talents
with a work ethic can still break through.
Here in Toronto we see some shifting of the
live blues scene with clubs that come and go,
but we also see the growth of the blues festival
throughout southern Ontario. What role do
you feel the festival has in the Canadian blues
mix?
I think festivals are still a growth area and
what a great way to present the music. Most
festivals include some mix of blues and great
opportunity for blues and roots music artists.
The whole festival experience transcends going
to a venue or club for many people. There’s
always something to do and appreciate. Canada
sets the standards for outdoor festivals with its
volunteer spirit and desire to get outside and do
things in the summer. And blues is the ultimate
party music.
Getting specific for a minute, what do you
see in the collaboration of the two talents Harry
Manx and Kevin Breit?
They are two of the most creative and
distinctive string players I’ve ever heard and
seem to inspire and complement each other's
playing endlessly. I’ve had the pleasure of
being in the studio for a good part of each of
the two albums they’ve done for Stony Plain.
Everything they do is musically sophisticated,
always soulful, has great taste and has freshness
about it. Both are great songwriters and singers,
which is evolving as well.
You have been involved with some of our
fallen blues heroes, Jeff Healey and Richard
Newell. In the DVD accompanying your
anniversary CD you talk about the timelessness
of the blues, and the 'giants' of music. Where
do you feel they fit in with Canada's blues
history?
And Long John Baldry. Those artists made
huge contributions and continue to do so. I’m
very grateful to have had the chance to be part
of their recorded history and to have gotten to
know them as friends. Each artist also left their
mark on the international music community
and directed some attention to Canada in a very
positive way.
Many years ago you and I skipped out of
a music conference schedule to catch Roscoe
Gordon in a set with members of the Skatalites in
the Cambridge House of Blues. That encounter
eventually led to you working with Roscoe. Do
you still scout out new talent that way? Do you
still have that sense of adventure?
What a great memory that is. Catching a
very rare gig with Roscoe, from Memphis,
backed up by a Jamaican band that his 50’s
recordings influenced. Together they helped
create ska and reggae music. Yes, I’m still
inspired by live music when it all comes
together. There’s a place where it can take
you that you can’t reach when listening to a
recording.
In your DVD you talk about staying small,
doing it right and the friendship and honesty
of the people you have worked with. Do you
consider yourself a lucky guy to have been
involved with the Stony Plain music makers?
Absolutely. Working with artists that I
respect and being a small part of what they do
certainly makes me a lucky guy. I remind myself
of that every day. We all put in long hours but
I wouldn’t consider it hard work compared
to most jobs. Blues and roots musicians also
tend to be very real and appreciate people that
support them.
More Than Music
With Paul James
PHOTO: SUSAN CHATER
Paul James is more than a Canadian
music culture icon. He has always been an
environmentalist.
Paul's interest in the plant world began after
the end of a relationship when he had to adopt
all the plants that were in the home. What were
a few plants have now become more than 150
houseplants; some that were added and others
being offspring to the original “mother” plant.
“They kept having babies. It’s like a plant
neighbourhood of friends and I still have the
mothers of the offspring,” says Paul.
One of the plants that held a lot of interest for
Paul was the Aloe Vera, known as a healing plant.
While away in Mexico he listened to the natives
when he was told that the best relief for sunburn
was the sap from the Aloe plant.
“Being a singer living in Canada, we have
artificial heat which dries the house tremendously.
I think having plants and having to water them
helps put moisture in the air which is good for the
throat. I’ve been singing for 40 years. An ounce of
prevention is worth a pound of cure.” he claims.
Fifteen years ago Paul purchased a 65 acre
piece of land on the North River near Orillia. He
Paul James with trees he planted along the North River near Orillia.
wanted to act locally and be a steward of the river
as a 1 km stretch of the land he purchased was part
of the shoreline. Over the last fifteen years he has
planted 2,250 trees on the property and near the
river’s edge.
“Trees help hold the soil and maintain a
wetland in the area. They also help keep the water
cooler and the fish thrive. Birds are now nesting
in the area as well.”
Trees native to the area such as maples,
oaks, white pine, spruce, dogwood, ash and high
cranberry bush have been lovingly planted.
“Planting trees is a great way to recharge your
inner energy!” says Paul.
Julian Fauth update: The hardest working
bluesman in this town is going to be out of work
for the next while and friends and fans are coming
to the rescue. On the eve of his Western Canadian
tour, Julian took a very serious fall in his hotel
room shower and suffered a badly broken right
shoulder. The expert medical opinion is that Julian
will be out of action for up to six months in order to
recover fully. So Ross Robinson of Toronto Blues
and Andrew Galloway of Electro-Fi Records are
inviting Julian’s many friends and fans to come out
and enjoy two very special benefit performances
which will help raise some badly needed funds to
assist Julian in his recovery. The first will be held on
Tuesday June 28th at Hugh’s Room with Harrison
Kennedy, Treasa Levasseur, Paul Reddick, Donne
Roberts and Bobby Dean Blackburn. July 20th
at Hollywood on the Queensway there will be
another fundraiser with Shakura S'Aida, David
Rotundo Band, Raoul Bhaneja and the Chris
Antonik Band. The entire blues community is
rallying to support our "favourite son". Tracy K
has donated part of the proceeds of her CD sales
when she sailed through town on her CD release
tour and more contributions will be pouring in
for Julian, an artist everyone admires and who
has never been known to say no to helping out an
artist in need. The ever-self-effacing Julian writes
on his website: "I'd like to apologize to everyone
I've let down. Hopefully I`ll be able to make up
for it when I get better. I was very disappointed to
cancel my western tour and the gigs I had booked
for June and July."
Morgan Davis Drive My Blues Away
Electro-Fi/Outside
Morgan Davis is a bluesman with a
penetrating, uncompromising view of his
field and not surprisingly, his albums appear
infrequently. He provides a useful example:
playing Robert Johnson’s “When You
Got A Good Friend” on a cigar box guitar,
an instrument Johnson may have known
well. With only three strings, it forced a
simplification of playing that illuminates
the song. This disc is not a musicological
exercise, but Morgan’s insistence on mostly
solo performances does highlight his singular
attention to detail and he does not disappoint.
He also writes original songs that easily
withstand comparison to the classics he’s reinterpreted.
His opener, “Sure As You Live”,
deals with mortality and self-reliance. The
tightly focused recording is mesmerizing. In his
notes, he points out he’s opened every set with
a Jimmy Reed song and here with “Thank You
Mr. Reed” he acknowledges that debt, using
no fewer than 27 of his song titles in the lyric.
More importantly, he nails the fabled Jimmy
Reed rhythm. Seymour Townes aces the
signature harp sound. “Anticipation”, another
original, is a rather lighter song but with some
typically astute observations. A song credited
to Lightnin’ Hopkins, “Arlene”, loosens that
tight focus, with a slight echo that seems to
add distance. The song does not appear to
have been recorded by Hopkins and Morgan
would know that. It is vintage Hopkins. “The
Money Men” continues a theme from Blues
Medicine, where Morgan sang about “Easy
Money (With Mumbo Jumbo)”. Events since
then have given him plenty of new material.
There’s even more echo and a couple of
overdubbed guitars. “Dissatisfied” is from the
Rice Miller songbook and allows Morgan
to feature his guitar playing. “Re-break My
Heart” adds a new twist to an old theme.
“Love Puzzle” was almost the album title and
an important composition - it’s a longer, story
song with perhaps a specific relationship in
mind. Morgan’s notes describe “Look Down
The Road” as blues theft: borrowing lyrics to
craft a new song. He credits Skip James &
Chris Smither and first heard it on a CD by
Massachusetts-based Geoff Bartley. However
he came by it, I’m glad he did. “Drive My
Blues Away” is about as fine a description of
what he does as can be imagined: travelling
with his eyes wide open, wherever the road
leads. The disc concludes with a couple from
the archives: “Happy Song” concluded his first
LP, from 1981, with a young Colin Linden on
slide guitar. The longer version recorded was
not used then. And lastly, an even younger
Morgan Davis was recorded in his apartment
in Rochdale in 1973. The version of Robert
Johnson’s “Ramblin’ On My Mind” done then
shows dramatically that he was on the right
track. This song also appears as a hidden track
on his Hogtown Years compilation. Morgan
has been traveling, away from his Nova Scotia
home for more than a month now and he’ll be
using his show at the Gladstone on June 2 as
his CD release gathering. You should be there.
More tour dates are at www.morgandavis.com.
I hope we don’t have to wait as long for the
next album, but we’ll be getting it only when
he’s ready.
Harry Manx & Kevin Breit Strictly
Whatever Stony Plain/Warner
A most fruitful collaboration between
superstars continues. Ever since Don Bird
arranged for their first meeting on stage at
the Owen Sound Summerfolk Festival, the
chemistry has blossomed, with tours, guest
appearances and now their third joint recording.
True to form, they brought some songs in but
left the arrangements to be worked out while
they played ‘strictly whatever’. By the end
of the session, each sang lead on the songs
they brought in while the other played lead
guitar. But not always, Manx played slide
and Breit lead on his “Nothing I Can Do”.
“Looking For A Brand New World” finds
Kevin at his songwriting best, and Stony Plain
likes it too - they’ve made it a free download
at www.stonyplainrecords.com, so you can
preview before you buy. “Hippy Trippy” is
the delightful & appropriate name for Breit’s
instrumental conjuring of the psychedelic ‘60’s.
Harry transforms John Lee Hooker’s “Mr.
Lucky”, making it less a Hooker song and more
a straight blues. Kevin solos most succinctly.
Perhaps the most ambitious song here is
Manx’s setting of a poem by Mary Elizabeth
Frye, “Do Not Stand At My Grave and Weep”.
It features some wonderfully evocative music
from the two of them assisted by what sounds
like an uncredited, processed, amplified
harmonica but it could be one of Kevin’s
guitars. To say that Breit’s “Little Ukelele” is
a change of pace is an understatement. Kevin
Breit’s “Dancing With Delilah” marks the
only appearance of Manx’s trademark Mohan
Veena. On most of the other songs, he plays
baritone guitar. Art Avalos adds percussion
on some songs. There are very few artists
who can play ‘strictly whatever’ that you can
trust without reservation, the proof is here
once again.
Harpdog Brown …Naturally Dog
Breath
Naturally, there’s a follow up to the wellreceived
first collaboration with Graham
Guest. And naturally is a useful term to
describe Harpdog’s effortless journey through
different styles. Jump Blues, the popular
music of the 30’s & 40’s, as in songs by Louis
Jordan & Fats Waller, predominate: “Blue
Light Boogie”, “Saturday Night Fish Fry &
“Ain’t Misbehavin’” get remarkably fresh
performances in this acoustic duo/trio setting.
Harpdog has also found songs by contemporary
songwriters that fit right in: Brandon Isaak
of The Twisters contributed a couple, “I’ll
Make It Up To You”, from the Twisters’
Come Out Swingin’ CD and one that doesn’t
seem to be recorded by the band yet, “I Only
Gamble On Love”. The guitarist in Harpdog’s
electric band, Wayne Berezan, contributed
12 MapleBlues June 2011 www.torontobluessociety.com
two as well and proves himself a writer to
be reckoned with. His “Fine Little Girl Rag”
is a delight. An obscure Willie Dixon song
from his early Big Three Trio days, “Tell
That Woman” is a nice find. Brian Coughlan
contributes thoroughly appropriate clarinet
for a fine period sound. More traditional blues
fare is represented by the opening St. Louis
Jimmy-penned “I Had My Fun” and the closer,
the solo harmonica piece recorded by Sonny
Boy Williamson (Rice Miller) during one of
his European visits, “Movin’ Down The River
Rhine”. The web site is www.myspace.com/
Blues Duo feat. Tracy K & Jamie
Steinhoff Canned Heat Indie Pool
A warm reception greeted this blues duo
at their CD Release at Hugh’s Room and it
was most deserved. Based in Thunder Bay,
Tracy K, on vocals & harmonica & Jamie
‘Snakeman’ Steinhoff, on vocals, guitar,
dobro & banjo, provide a program of pre-war
blues and originals highlighted by excellent
rapport & expert playing. Their vocals are
assured & confident. The pre-war songs
open the disc, with special mention going to
Barbeque Bob’s “Atlanta Moan”, a tribute
to Big Dave McLean, whose status as role
model & mentor cannot be overestimated. I
think he would be pleased with this version
of his signature tune. Jamie’s hokum-styled
“Diddy-Wah-So” belongs in this sequence.
The sequence of originals that follows is more
contemporary: Tracy’s love song, “Tailor
Made” and “Cowboy Blues”, about a lost
love. Contemporary or not, they are excellent
songs, sung beautifully. They sell homemade
jelly & salsa at their shows as well and lighten
the mood a bit with the tale of getting the
ingredients in “Stolen Apple Jelly”. Tracy was
asked to sing at an aunt’s funeral and wrote a
song for the occasion. She unfortunately has
had to sing it a couple of more times since and
here, ending the disc on a somber note, she
sings it with her daughter, Emily. They’ve
called themselves Canada’s Paul Rishell &
Annie Raines and I for one like to think they’re
at least as good as that veteran duo. The web
This set arrived before it happened but a
good way to help after the worst flood since the
Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 is to support
the artists who live there. Broke & Hungry
Records has released seven CDs devoted to
Delta artists, plus a DVD survey and two
soundtrack CDs to make the music of current
Delta performers available to everyone. That
they still have a sense of humour after five years
is evident in the title. What you get in this twodisc
anthology is a selection from those discs
plus fourteen previously unreleased songs.
Label prez Jeff Konkel proved that there is
still blues in Bentonia after the passing of
Skip James & Jack Owens - Jimmy “Duck”
Holmes has been recorded three times in these
five years. Pat Thomas is the son of the late
bluesman/sculptor James “Son” Thomas.
Another major find is LC Ulmer, profiled in
the current issue of Living Blues, who at the
age of 82 will have you scratching your head
as to why he hasn’t recorded more often. Just
listen to “Rosalee”. R.L. Boyce has recorded
before, but mostly on drums. He’s also guested
with the North Mississippi Allstars. He’s from
Como and his Hill Country boogie, “Ain’t It
Alright”, recorded at one of his house parties,
is a standout. Those of you who caught Terry
“Harmonica” Bean at the Southside Shuffle
will know what he sounds like but if you
didn’t, he has two new songs here. Broke &
Hungry Records concentrates on Mississippi
On The Side with...
Omar Tunnoch
Ottawa born, Omar Tunnoch has been layin’
it down solid on the bass for nearly four decades.
Currently, Tunnoch is the bassist for the multiple
award winning band Fathead. A place in the
band that he’s held for
twenty years.
It was in the mid
1960’s at the age of
fourteen while living in
Winnipeg that Omar
was introduced to the
blues after hearing
the music of Paul
Butterfield. As fate would have it, he would
find himself on stage with Paul, years later,
when Omar played with the band that backed
up touring artists at The Brunswick House in
Toronto.
Earlier in his career, Omar was also bassist
for the band, Wooden Teeth which was fronted
by Michael Pickett. Here is where Omar
became known as the “fretless bass player”
when his own bass lost its “teeth” after an
evening with Silent Sam. Tunnoch, was also
part of a few seminal Toronto bands such as,
Cueball, Cameo Blues Band, who were the
house band at The Hotel Isabella, and Grant
Fullerton Band.
Other esteemed artists that Omar has backed
up include, Etta James, Big Mama Thornton,
John Lee Hooker, Lowell Fulsom and Long
John Baldry.
His musical influences are quite eclectic.
Along with the sounds of R & B, funk and
Motown, he derived inspiration from artists
such as, James Brown, Little Feat, Tower of
Power, Herbie Hancock and of course Paul
Butterfield.
It’s more than layin’ it down solid on the
bass with Omar as he is also the songwriter
(lyrics and music), along with Al Lerman, for
Fathead.
“My songwriting ideas are basically
comments on life” says Omar. “I like to
incorporate humour, play on words and mix up
the feels and tempos to try and keep it interesting
to hold the listener’s attention.”
Clearly, the words and tempos have held
the listener’s attention with Fathead garnering
many Maple Blues Awards, as well as two Juno
Awards for Blues Recording of the Year. First,
in 1998 for “Blues Weather” and then in 2008
for “Building Full of Blues.”
Omar is also a visual artist having studied
painting in the Fine Arts program at Humber
College and Vancouver School of the Arts.
Currently, he is part of a collaboration of
painting musicians who are endeavouring to
put together a showcase of their work.
Fathead’s newest recording and 2011 Juno
nominated album is entitled, “Where Are the
Blues Taking Me”. The title track has also
received honourable mention in the 2011
International Songwriting Competition.
Omar states, “You never know where
the blues are going to take you! That’s the
excitement and mystery of the blues which
gives you the drive to keep on going!”
