printed edition of Aesop’s fables in the<br />

version of Samuel Croxall. Large paper<br />

copy, about ten inches tall; titles slightly<br />

cut down. With 112 engraved plates,<br />

including vignette titles, by Grainger,<br />

Bromley, Martin, et al. The illustrations<br />

are after those of Francis Barlow in the<br />

An exquisite presentation of one of the most beautiful illustrated<br />

books of the fifteenth century, printed by Giovanni Alvise of<br />

Verona between 1478 and 1480. Alvise was also the inventor of the<br />

first typographic ornaments, and the woodcuts, attributed to the<br />

outstanding miniaturist of contemporary Verona, are surrounded by<br />

borders of printer’s flowers.<br />

The first volume has 66 hand-colored woodcuts recut by Anna<br />

Bramanti with the coloring carried out in Paris by Atelier Daniel<br />

Jacomet. The second volume has sixty fables in Caxton’s translation,<br />

followed by six missing in Caxton and translated here from the Latin.<br />
