of Senate District 36, presented 

the “Business of the Year” 

Award to Taylor Guitars in 

front of a bustling factory floor 

where the world famous Taylor 

Guitars are made. Attending

Guitars, Kurt Listug, CEO, Taylor

“Taylor Guitars is an example 

of the American dream 

come true,” Senator Anderson 

said. “In 1974, Bob Taylor 

and Kurt Listug started the 

company in a building with a 

leaky roof and sawdust on the 

floor to sop-up the puddles. 

Almost 40 years later, Taylor 

Guitars operates out of a 

25,000 square foot El Cajon 

facility, employs hundreds of 

my constituents, and makes a 

world-class guitar. Taylor Guitar 

has also given back to their 

community through their support 

of local high school wood 

shop programs that are building 

the critical career development 

skills of our youth. It’s an 

honor to make Taylor Guitars 

my 2011 Business of the Year.” 

This past weekend Taylor 

Guitars opened their warehouse 

doors to the public for 

the first time ever for a oneday 

sale offering “Friends and 

Family” pricing. More than 

400 people lined up outside 

the El Cajon warehouse for 

the sale. 

At the age of 18 Bob Taylor 

began working on guitars. At 

the age of 20 he purchased the 

American Dream Guitar shop 

naming it the Westland Music 

Company. Needing a name 

that would fit on the headstock 

of the guitar he changed the 

name to Taylor Guitars launching 

a business that would become 

a standard for musicians 

around the world. 

At the recent sale, local musicians, 

guitar players young 

and old, and folks who just 

wanted to see the famed 

guitars marveled as they traversed 

the isles of guitars 

waiting for a new home. Almost 

like children in a candy 

store, they moved from one 

to the other picking out their 

favorite tunes on each guitar 

they could not pass up.

well as helicopters flying at 300 ft over 

Rattlesnake Mountain. He suggested those

HUD AND NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REAL ESTATE 

BROKERS FORM PARTNERSHIP TO PROMOTE FAIR HOUSING 

In an effort to end discriminatory treatment African Americans and other people of color 

often experience, HUD and the National Association of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB) today 

announced a new partnership to work together to promote fair housing in minority communities. 

In Fiscal Year 2010, 27.8% (2,820) of the 10,157 fair housing complaints HUD and its 

fair housing partner agencies received alleged race discrimination against blacks. At the same 

time, a recent HUD report showed that the nation’s “worst case housing needs” increased by 

3.2 percentage points among African American families.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) HUD and NAREB signed will help end discrimination 

by informing consumers in African American and other minority communities and 

public and private industry members about their fair housing rights and responsibilities under 

the Fair Housing Act. 

“This partnership advances HUD’s and NAREB’s joint vision and commitment to end housing 

discrimination,” said John Trasvina, HUD Assistant Secretary for Fair Housing and Equal 

Opportunity (FHEO). Under the MOU, HUD and NAREB will conduct joint seminars, workshops, 

and forums on ways to identify unlawful sales, rental and lending and related government 

contracting discrimination. Additionally, they will work together to educate people in all 

communities about their fair housing and related government contracting rights and avenues 

available to them should they experience discrimination. 

Furthermore, NAREB will emphasize the importance of fair housing and equal opportunity 

to real estate professionals as well as work with other organizations and institutions in African 

American communities, including faith-based groups, government agencies. 

NAREB, the oldest minority real estate trade association in America, was founded to create 

equal housing and government contracting opportunities for every resident of the nation, 

regardless of race, creed, or color. Its 18,000 members, 12 regional offices, and 92 chapters 

work to help stabilize the nation’s housing and urban community real estate foreclosurerelated 

losses in minority communities. 

FHEO and its partners in the Fair Housing Assistance Program investigate more than 10,000 

housing discrimination complaints annually. If you feel you have been discriminated against 

or illegally been denied a housing dwelling, please contact your fair housing services provider 

and ask to speak to a Fair Housing Counselor immediately.

Base in Coronado, 

she was promoted to NSCC 

Cadet Chief Petty Officer. The 

rank of the Chief Petty Officer 

or CPO is the highest rank a cadet 

can earn, and the equivalent 

of Scouting’s “Eagle” rank. 

Ortmeier joins a small cadre 

of NSCC Chief Petty Officer’s 

numbering only 90 cadets 

nationwide. Only four Naval 

Sea Cadets out of over three 

hundred in San Diego County 

are Chief Petty Officers. A 

CPO typically serves for one 

to two years before graduating 

from the program. Serving in 

CORONADO Battalion based 

at Naval Amphibious Base, she 

will now lead her Battalion as 

the most senior cadets.

Christmas fruitcake always gets a bad rap

Many reasons exist 

why a person should 

love and embrace 

the Christmas season. I hear of 

those who attack the Christmas 

season and I take no notice 

to them at all. The thing that 

keeps buffoons energized is his 

attention paid to them. If they 

were really serious about their 

so-called beliefs, they would 

leave the country during the 

Christmas season and go somewhere 

where it is not celebrated. 

My recommendation is the 

bottom of the Atlantic Ocean . 

Ignoring the holiday buffoons, 

I snuggle down and 

enjoy the Christmas festivities. 

So much about the season to 

savor and enjoy. 

The Gracious Mistress of the 

Parsonage has our home all 

decorated for the Christmas 

season. In the evening, we sit 

down in the living room among 

all of the decorations, sip our 

hot cocoa and have a healthy 

slice of Christmas fruitcake. 

When it comes to decorating 

things, I don’t even have a 

thumb. During this time, I envy 

those who are all thumbs. My 

decorating expertise is simply 

to enjoy the work done. And 

that I do. 

I love everything about the 

Christmas season, except maybe 

shopping in the mall. I think 

there should be some kind of a 

law restricting shopping in the 

mall. It is not that I hate going 

to the mall… well, I guess if I am 

truthful, I really do hate going to 

the mall. If they had a nice good 

used bookstore, I might see my 

way to the mall more often and 

deliberately. 

Apart from the mall, the 

Christmas season is a terrific 

time to be alive. 

I love the Christmas trees. Go 

ahead and call it a “Holiday 

Tree” if you do not mind letting 

other people know how stupid 

you really sound. Solomon, in 

the Old Testament, had some of 

these people in mind when he 

wrote, “Even a fool, when he 

holdeth his peace, is counted 

wise: and he that shutteth his 

lips is esteemed a man of understanding.” 

(Proverbs 17:28 

KJV ). If it is a “Holiday Tree,” 

which holiday does it represent? 

I love all the decorations 

associated with this time of 

year. Throughout the year, 

everything seems to be rather 

drab, but when Christmas 

comes along things begin to 

brighten up. 

I love all the stories associated 

with Christmas. Yes, I know 

some of them are just stories 

made up; but every once in 

a while it is good to listen to a 

story. The fact that somebody 

has accused Santa’s reindeer’s 

of bullying poor little Rudolph 

only indicate that some people 

do not know the difference 

between fact and fiction. 

Do not let this get out, but, 

Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer 

does not even exist. He 

is just a made-up character in 

a Christmas story. I know that 

will come as a shock to many 

people, but the truth is the truth 

no matter whom it hurts. 

I love the music of Christmas. 

Particularly, because 90 percent 

of the Christmas music is 

religious. Go figure? Nothing is 

more inspiring than listening to 

a choir sing Handel’s Messiah. 

Of course, there is a danger 

that the wrong people will get 

a hold of this great piece of 

music and want to change the 

title. I am looking for someone 

to protest this and insist we call 

it, “Handel’s Person.”

The music of Christmas is 

uplifting and inspiring despite 

all the naysayers that seem to 

come out of the ground during 

this time of the year. I wish they 

would stay underground and 

celebrate whatever they celebrate 

with Punxsutawney Phil. 

Dare I mention the food of 

Christmas? I’m going to anyway. 

The best thing about the 

food at Christmas time is that 

nobody, and when I am talking 

about nobody, I am referring of 

course to my wife, says, “You 

shouldn’t be eating that.” The 

beauty of Christmas food is that 

you can eat it whenever and as 

much as you like. 

When I come back for my 

second slice of fruitcake and 

somebody looks at me I always 

say, “I’m starting my diet next 

month.” And I get away with it. 

Speaking of fruitcake, it is the 

best part of the Christmas food 

frenzy. My biggest concern in 

this area is that the fruitcake 

has gotten a very bad rap by 

people who do not understand 

this delicacy. It is a very wonderful 

way for a person to get their 

daily portion of fruit. How nice 

of it to be mixed in with cake. 

After all, if the word “fruit,” is 

associated with it, it must be 

good, right? Everybody knows 

fruit is good for a person. 

I take my portion of vegetables 

in carrot cake and my 

portion of fruit in fruitcake. This 

is the cuisine of the gods. 

There is a very practical side 

to this fruitcake business. As I 

am picking up my fifth slice of 

fruitcake, I begin thinking about 

the New Year and how I need 

to add more fruit to my diet. As 

I slowly chew on the fruitcake, 

every aspect of my being is 

energized with glorious delight 

and goodwill toward men. After 

a few slices of fruitcake, I am in 

such a good mood that even the 

“Holiday Tree” people do not 

bother me so much. Nothing 

comes between my fruitcake 

and me. 

Christmas is the season to 

rejoice in God’s love for the 

world so much that he sent his 

only son, Jesus Christ.

Dear Readers, 

It has been almost 33 years since 

I received Christ as my Savior. 

Christmas began to mean more to 

me when I personally experienced 

the life-changing love of Jesus. I 

was lost, broken and hurting deep 

within and Jesus rescued me. Matthew 

1:23, “Behold the virgin shall 

be with child and bear a Son, and 

they shall call His name Immanuel,’ 

which is translated God with us.” 

This scripture is so powerful. God 

came to be with us, to make Himself real instead of the picture 

of a distant, angry Creator. He is a loving Father who came 

to seek and save the lost. Many people are hurting, broken 

inside and some even contemplating suicide during this time 

of year. It’s more important than ever to reach out to others 

with the love of Jesus, to let them know there are answers 

for their life and healing for their broken hearts. 

The babe born in the manger came with a Divine purpose 

spelled out in this verse: Isaiah 9:6, “For unto us a Child is 

born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be 

upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful 

Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of 

Peace.” So many around us are searching for peace from 

the turmoil of life, anxiety and fear of the future. The Bible 

promises in Philippians 4:6-7, “Be anxious for nothing, but 

in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, 

let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of 

God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your 

hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” He is still touching 

hearts and changing lives today. Maybe you need this kind 

of touch from the Lord. He is waiting to help you not just 

during a season but everyday of your life. If you would like 

to receive Christ as your Savior, repeat this prayer with all 

your heart, “Jesus, I believe you died on the cross, I believe 

you rose from the dead. I ask you to forgive my wrongs and 

I surrender my life to you. Help me to understand and experience 

your peace, in Jesus name, Amen.” I said a simple 

prayer like this one and Jesus changed my whole life. He is 

the only reason for the Christmas season, Merry Christmas!

Red Cross offers tips for 12 days of holiday safety 

Having a busy time 

getting ready for the 

holidays? While everyone 

is shopping, baking, 

gift wrapping, decorating and 

going to parties, the American 

Red Cross, San Diego/Imperial 

Laughter is the Best Medicine 

The green thing 

Checking out at the store, the young cashier suggested to the 

older woman, that she should bring her own grocery bags 

because plastic bags weren’t good for the environment. 

The woman apologized and explained, “We didn’t have this 

green thing back in my earlier days.” 

The clerk responded, “That’s our problem today. Your generation 

did not care enough to save our environment for future 

generations.” 

She was right -- our generation didn’t have the green thing in its 

day. Back then, we returned milk bottles, soda bottles and beer 

bottles to the store. The store sent them back to the plant to be 

washed and sterilized and refilled, so it could use the same bottles 

over and over. So they really were recycled. But we didn’t have 

the green thing back in our day. 

We walked up stairs, because we didn’t have an escalator in 

every store and office building. We walked to the grocery store 

and didn’t climb into a 300-horsepower machine every time we 

had to go two blocks. But she was right. We didn’t have the green 

thing in our day. 

Back then, we washed the baby’s diapers because we didn’t 

have the throw-away kind. We dried clothes on a line, not in an 

energy gobbling machine burning up 220 volts -- wind and solar 

power really did dry our clothes back in our early days. Kids got 

hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always 

brand-new clothing. But that young lady is right; we didn’t have 

the green thing back in our day. 

Back then, we had one TV, or radio, in the house — not a TV 

in every room. And the TV had a small screen the size of a handkerchief 

(remember them?), not a screen the size of the state of 

Montana . In the kitchen, we blended and stirred by hand because 

we didn’t have electric machines to do everything for us. When 

we packaged a fragile item to send in the mail, we used wadded 

up old newspapers to cushion it, not Styrofoam or plastic bubble 

wrap. Back then, we didn’t fire up an engine and burn gasoline just 

to cut the lawn. We used a push mower that ran on human power. 

We exercised by working so we didn’t need to go to a health club 

to run on treadmills that operate on electricity. But she’s right; we 

didn’t have the green thing back then. 

We drank from a fountain when we were thirsty instead of using 

a cup or a plastic bottle every time we had a drink of water. We 

refilled writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen, and we 

replaced the razor blades in a razor instead of throwing away the 

whole razor just because the blade got dull. But we didn’t have 

the green thing back then. 

Back then, people took the streetcar or a bus and kids rode 

their bikes to school or walked instead of turning their moms into 

a 24-hour taxi service. We had one electrical outlet in a room, 

not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances. And 

we didn’t need a computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed 

from satellites 2,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest 

pizza joint. 

But isn’t it sad the we didn’t have the green thing back then?

tips to help make the season a 

safe one. 

1. Prepare vehicle for 

traveling to grandmother’s 

house. Build an emergency 

kit and include items such 

as blankets or sleeping bags, 

jumper cables, fire extinguisher, 

compass and road maps, 

shovel, tire repair kit and 

pump, extra clothing, flares, 

and a tow rope. 

2. Drive the sleigh and 

reindeer safely. Avoid driving 

in a storm. If travel is a must, let 

someone know the destination, 

the route being taken to get 

there, and how long it should 

take to arrive. If the car gets 

stuck along the way, help can be 

sent along the predetermined 

route. 

3. Help prevent the 

spread of the flu. Stay home 

if sick. Wash hands with soap 

and water as often as possible, 

or use an alcohol-based 

hand rub. Cover the nose and 

mouth with a tissue or sleeve 

when coughing or sneezing, 

and throw the tissue away 

after use. If a tissue isn’t available, 

someone should cough 

or sneeze into their elbow, not 

their hands. 

4. Follow Santa’s fashion 

lead – dress in layers. 

When it’s cold outside, layered 

lightweight clothing will keep a 

person warmer than a single 

heavy coat. Gloves and a hat 

will prevent loss of body heat.

6. Avoid danger while 

roasting chestnuts on an 

open fire. Stay in the kitchen 

when frying, grilling or broiling 

food. If leaving the kitchen even 

for a short period of time, turn 

off the stove. This is important 

because unattended cooking 

causes nearly 90 percent of all 

kitchen fires. 

7. Be a lifesaver during 

the holidays. The Red Cross 

recommends at least one person 

in every household should 

take first aid and CPR/AED

8. Designate a driver or 

skip the holiday cheer. Buckle 

up, slow down, don’t drive 

impaired. If someone plans on

Through Dec. 31 St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center, the 

non-denominational adult day-training facility for adults with 

developmental disabilities, will host the annual Wings & Snow 

holiday exhibit this winter. Sophie’s Gallery artists have created a 

variety of fanciful winged creatures on pizza peels (paddles) using 

mosaic tiles, glass and repurposed objects in a non-traditional 

celebration of the holidays. Students have also created pizza

School District pilot program called STEM, an acronym for

on the same project, practicing both languages while learning

Despite the veneer 

of civilized behavior 

most of us humans 

affect, let’s face it – deep down, 

we’re all a bunch of Neanderthals. 

Maybe that’s why watching 

sophisticated people act 

badly despite their pretensions 

is such fun. 

In Yasmina Reza’s play Carnage 

(adapted for the screen by 

Reza and director Roman Polanski), 

a playground squabble 

between two 11-year-old boys 

has resulted in tooth damage 

to one. Now Alan (Christoph 

Waltz) and Nancy Cowan 

(Kate Winslet), parents of the 

aggressor, meet at the home 

 

of Michael (John C. Reilly) and 

Penelope Longstreet (Jodie 

Foster) to discuss how to handle 

the incident. 

 

A supremely commonplace 

issue, to be sure, and (one 

would 

 

think) easily resolved. 

But before our eyes, the comfortable 

Longstreet living room 

 

morphs from civilized drawing 

room to verbal sparring place 

to near boxing ring. The four 

players in this charade are a 

study unto themselves. Alan, 

attorney for a pharmaceutical 

company, calls his son Zachary 

a “thug” but is distracted by 

call after call on a cell phone 

seemingly attached to his ear 

– to his wife’s escalating annoyance. 

Winslet’s Nancy, an investment 

banker, starts out as 

the peacemaker, but loses 

her cool in direct proportion 

to the number of phone calls 

Alan feels the need to take, 

her tongue becoming more 

caustic as the voice rises and 

the civilized exterior melts. 

Down a notch on the social 

scale are the Longstreets. 

Reilly’s Michael, a wholesaler 

in household goods, is fun 

to watch as a big bear of a 

man whose hastily paintedon 

manners begin to erode 

when Nancy discovers his 

fear of hamsters. Foster’s 

Penelope, who writes about 

art and worries about starving 

children in Africa, suffers the 

biggest crash, her “evolved 

consciousness” devolving into 

anger, insults and physical 

violence. 

Polanski has this quartet 

moving, circling, realigning in 

fascinating ways as alliances 

shift, scotch loosens tongues 

and tempers flare. The stage 

version of this (God of Carnage) 

was my favorite play of 

2011. Though the original cast 

(Marcia Gay Harden, James 

Gandolfini, Hope Davis and 

Jeff Daniel) is hard to beat 

(and Harden is better than 

Foster), Polanski gets credit 

for not trying to open it up 

too much, but retaining the 

slightly claustrophobic feel of 

the original.

ORDINANCE NO. 4973 

AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY COUNCIL 

OF THE CITY OF EL CAJON AMENDING 

CHAPTERS 5.28 AND 5.16 OF 

TITLE 5 (BUSINESS LICENSES AND 

REGULATIONS) OF 

THE EL CAJON MUNICIPAL CODE 

RELATED TO CARD ROOMS 

THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF EL 

CAJON DOES ORDAIN AS FOLLOWS: 

SECTION 1. Chapter 5.28 of Title 5 of the 

El Cajon Municipal Code is hereby repealed. 

SECTION 2. A new Chapter 5.28 of Title 

5 of the El Cajon Municipal Code is hereby 

added to read as follows: 

5.28.010 Card room defined. 

For the purposes of this chapter, a card room 

is any space, room or enclosure furnished or 

equipped with one or more tables, spaces, or 

other implements used or intended to be used 

as card tables or locations for the playing of 

cards and similar games, and the use of 

which is available to the public or any portion 

of the public. This term shall not apply to city 

community recreation centers, where visitors 

occasionally play cards and similar games for 

recreational purposes. 

5.28.020 Restrictions on ownership. 

It is unlawful to own or operate a card room 

within the city, except as an ancillary use by a 

society, club, fraternal or other organizations, 

qualified to transact business in California as 

a nonprofit organization, the income of which 

is exempt from taxation under section 501(c) 

of the Internal Revenue Code, having adopted 

bylaws and duly elected directors and members, 

which has a valid conditional use permit 

issued pursuant to Chapter 17.50 of this code 

and a valid special operations license for the 

operation of a card room issued pursuant to 

Chapter 5.16 of this code, where the tables 

are for the exclusive use of members of the 

such nonprofit society, club, or organization, 

where no charge is made for the use of any of 

the card room facilities, and where no gambling 

of any sort is involved. Any card room must be 

located at the same address as the business 

address of the nonprofit organization and 

shall not be operated in conjunction with any 

for-profit establishment. 

5.28.025 Restriction on location. 

No special operations license shall be approved 

to operate a card room within the area 

governed by Specific Plan No. 182. 

5.28.030 Licenses—Suspension and 

revocation. 

Any special operations license issued under 

this chapter may be suspended or revoked as 

provided in Chapter 5.12 of this code. 

5.28.040 Licenses—Nontransferable. 

No special operations license issued for a 

card room shall be assignable or transferable. 

5.28.050 Violation of state law not authorized. 

It is not the intention of this chapter to license 

any card room for the playing of any game 

prohibited by the laws of the state. 

5.28.060 Public nuisance. 

Any business which is established or maintained 

in violation of this chapter is deemed to 

be a public nuisance and may be abated in accordance 

with Chapter 1.16 of this code. 

SECTION 3. Section 5.16.030 of Chapter 

5.16 of Title 5 of the El Cajon Municipal Code 

is hereby repealed. 

SECTION 4. A new Section 5.16.030 of 

Chapter 5.16 of Title 5 of the El Cajon Municipal 

Code is hereby added to read as follows: 

5.16.030 Applicability. 

The following businesses and activities shall 

be licensed according to the procedure specified 

in this chapter: 

A. Businesses and activities not involving the 

exercise of First Amendment rights, including 

the following: 

1. Escort services; 

2. Junkyards; 

3. Massage parlors; 

4. Merchandise coupon sales or advertising; 

5. Pawnbrokers; 

6. Poolrooms; 

7. Private patrol services; 

8. Secondhand stores; 

9. Swap meet operation; 


10. Vehicles for hire; 

11. Alcohol- and tobacco-free public dances; 

12. Towing service for city police towing 

purposes; 

13. Closing-out sales; 

14. Ambulances; 

15. Penny arcades and other games of skill 

or amusement; and 

16. Card rooms as provided for in 

Chapter 5.28. 

B. Businesses and activities that may involve 

the exercise of First Amendment rights, including 

the following: 

1. Cabarets; 

2. Public dances; 

3. Sound trucks; and 

4. Fortune-telling and related occupations. 

SECTION 5. This ordinance shall become 

effective thirty (30) days following its passage 

and adoption.

Abandoned kittens want to go

and his good deed, the kittens 

have been named after the 

virtues of the holiday season 

– Faith, Hope, Joy, Love (or 

charity) and Peace. 

“First, I was shocked,” said 

Mevi of finding five kittens in a 

ratty box at the end of his long 

driveway. “Second I thought 

how cute they were and third, 

I knew that if my daughter saw 

them, she would think Santa 

had come a little early and 

would want to keep them, so I 

took them to Helen Woodward 

Animal Center where I knew 

they would be able to find 

homes.” 

Four of the kittens, three 

males and one female, are 

grey with big green eyes, while 

one lone female is black with 

green eyes and a white tuft of 

fur on its chin. They are sweet 

and playful and ready to find 

their forever homes this holiday 

season. 

The kittens will be part of the 

Iams Home for the Holidays 

campaign which has found 

homes for 6 million pets since it 

began at Helen Woodward Animal 

Center in 1999. This year 

3,800 animal organizations are 

participating worldwide and the 

goal is to find homes for 1.5 

million pets this holiday season.

Mevi awoke to find 

five hungry, flea ridden kittens 

abandoned in a urine soaked 

box in his yard in Lakeside. 

Mevi who had adopted pets 

from Helen Woodward Animal 

Center in the past, called 

the Center for help. The kittens, 

who are now about 10 

weeks old, have recovered 

from their ordeal and are 

ready to find their forever 

Mevi doesn’t hold it against 

the people who abandoned 

the kittens, “In this economy, 

people just don’t know what to 

do. I am glad they left the kittens 

at my house and we were able 

to do the right thing.”
