History<br />

In 1976 a sw<strong>in</strong>e flu outbreak occurred at<br />

Fort Dix, however, this virus was not<br />

exactly the same as the virus identified <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>2009</strong>.<br />

The government developed a vacc<strong>in</strong>e <strong>for</strong><br />

this particular stra<strong>in</strong> but un<strong>for</strong>tunately the<br />

vacc<strong>in</strong>e caused a number of neurological<br />

problems<br />

Why is it called Sw<strong>in</strong>e Flu?<br />

Two of the genes <strong>in</strong> the<br />

H1N1 virus are similar to<br />

those found <strong>in</strong> the flu virus<br />

that <strong>in</strong>fects European <strong>and</strong><br />

Asian pigs!<br />

It also has avian genes <strong>and</strong><br />

human genes.<br />

Accord<strong>in</strong>g to the CDC<br />

scientists call this a<br />

"quadruple reassortant”<br />

virus<br />

Most people (90-95%) experience<br />

symptoms, however, recover fully from<br />

the sw<strong>in</strong>e flu<br />

Those with compromised immune<br />

systems are at risk <strong>and</strong> may not survive<br />

The mortality rate of the typical flu virus is<br />

0.1%, while it looks like the mortality rate<br />
