Dear HSSM Supporters and Friends,

In 2009, HSSM reached many milestones. The Louise Fenner Claiborne Spay Neuter

Clinic performed its 40,000 th surgery since opening its doors at our new location in 2006.

HSSM was for the third time given a four-star rating by Charity Navigator, the highest honor

a charity in the U.S. can receive. And, most importantly, HSSM’s live release rate rose 4.09%.

Although we made so much progress in 2009, I am very excited about the things that are happening and

those that are yet to come in 2010. The Board of Directors, myself included, are proud to be a part of the

Humane Society of South Mississippi. We take pride in this great organization and we have been working

diligently to improve our programs to better serve the animals in our care.

In this troubled economy, HSSM has been able to thrive and that has only been

possible through the continued devotion of our community and supporters. So, thank

you for helping us save lives, four paws at a time.

Sincerely,

Kim Fritz

Dear Caring Friends,

As a private, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, the Humane Society of South Mississippi

depends on our community in order to “provide the highest quality services…to the

animals entrusted to our care.” We receive no funding from the government. We are also

not affiliated with the Humane Society of the United States, other than the occasional grant we

receive from that organization. We are able stand on our own two feet only through the generosity of our

supporters.

We hope that you will take some time to peruse this report and catch a glimpse

of our programs and progress. We hope you are as proud as we are of HSSM’s

accomplishments in 2009.

Sincerely,

Tara High

The Humane Society of South Mississippi is the strongest animal welfare

organization on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. HSSM was established in 1952 and

housed in a WWII armory bunker until 2006 when it was destroyed by

Hurricane Katrina. HSSM was able to bounce back beautifully after the storm,

joining forces with animal welfare organizations all over the country to continue

working toward our goal to eliminate pet overpopulation and improve the

lives of animals in our community.

We are now housed in a 41,000 square foot, state-of-the-art facility

which provides the animals we serve with a safe and sanitary environment that

is pleasant for adoptive families as well as our four-legged friends.

To care for these pets, HSSM has developed many innovative programs:

As a private 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization, HSSM receives NO

government funding.

HSSM is primarily funded through the generosity of individual donors and

community members, as well as through grants from other organizations.

HSSM is not affiliated with the Humane Society of the United States in any way apart

from receiving occasional grant funding for specific programs or working

together on specific issues.

Grant funding is generally procured in a competitive environment

in which HSSM must convince the granting organization that our

cause and the program we will use the funding for is the most

worthy cause.

The LFCC is HSSM’s on-site, high volume, high quality spay/neuter clinic. Our

clinic provides low-cost spay/neuter services to the residents of the Mississippi Gulf

Coast. In addition to “fixing” the public’s pets, the LFCC also spays or neuters every

animal that is adopted from HSSM and provides FREE spay/neuter for feral cats through

HSSM’s Trap-Neuter-Release (TNR) program .

The LFCC is a high-volume, high quality clinic performing an average of 42 sterilization

surgeries each day. LFCC staff is highly trained and the clinic follows the nationally recognized

Humane Alliance model for high-volume, high-quality spay/neuter clinics.

The LFCC is vital to HSSM’s core mission of eliminating pet overpopulation in

South Mississippi. Spaying and neutering is recognized as the best defense

against all sources of shelter overpopulation and the LFCC strives to make it

affordable to everyone. Prices for the 2009 Calendar year were as follows:

General Public: $50

Low-Income: $5

Un-Fathers Month Special: $21 (June)

Feral Cats: Free

The Adoptions department is HSSM’s most well-known

function. The Adoptions department is HSSM’s re-homing arm.

Adoptions Staff is trained to match animals with compatible homes

to ensure the welfare of the animal and its new family.

HSSM adopted out 4,007 pets in 2009, bringing the total number of adoptions

HSSM has facilitated to over 15,000 since moving to our new

location in 2006.

When you adopt from HSSM, your adoption includes:

The Foster/Alternative Placement department is responsible for placing

animals who may not be immediately adoptable into temporary homes

where they can receive individualized care they might not have access to in

the shelter environment.

Foster care is an important element in increasing HSSM’s live-release rate, as it gives

HSSM the opportunity to care for animals with contagious illnesses common to shelters like

Upper Respiratory Infection and Kennel Cough.

Another organization, MS Pet Advocates, works with HSSM to provide temporary homes for

animals who have been at HSSM for an extended amount of time. These special

foster parents are tasked with finding their foster animal a home in the short

two weeks that the animal is with them.

There are many reasons why an animal may need a foster home:

Love Train is HSSM’s transport program. Love Train takes excess

adoptable animals from HSSM and transports them across the

country to communities where they do not have the pet overpopulation

problem that we have in South Mississippi.

Love Train is an integral alternative placement option for the animals at

HSSM, because our shelter is always full. Transported animals are all

but guaranteed to find a home. When an animal is sent on Love

Train, it also opens up its spot in the shelter, essentially saving

two lives in one step.

The Love Train program is primarily funded by a grant from the

Jack A. & Gertrude W. Wilson Animal Welfare Fund through the

Gulf Coast Community Foundation.

HSSM is an open-admission shelter, meaning that no animal is

turned away regardless of health, age, or temperament. HSSM’s

policy is to take in any animal that is brought to our doors, both by the

public and local Animal Control Agencies.

In 2009, HSSM had contracts with all Animal Control Agencies in Harrison

County, as well as with the Wiggins Animal Control. These contracts

stipulate that stray animals found in these jurisdictions are housed

at HSSM. These stray animals make up approximately ½ of

HSSM’s intake numbers.

The second largest category for intake is owner surrendered

animals. These are animals that are brought to the shelter by their

owners for various reasons.

It can be a tense moment in the shelter when an owner who has

lost a pet comes in to look for their four-legged family member.

Hopes are high for the worried owner and the staff members

assisting.

It is the best feeling when an owner and their precious pet are reunited.

HSSM staff and volunteers do all they can to help reunite pets with their

owners.

It has been proven that microchipped pets are much more likely to

be reunited with their families than un-microchipped pets (5 times

more likely for dogs, 20 times more likely for cats), so HSSM offers

microchipping without an appointment daily for $20 through the Lost

& Found department.

Also, some local municipalities have mandated that animals returned to their

owners be microchipped upon their first return and “fixed” upon their second.

HSSM strives to serve not only the animals in our shelter, but

those in our community as well. In 2009, HSSM provided two

services in particular that were developed to impact the community’s

pets.

Wag-N-Train is HSSM’s main outreach program. Wag-N-Train

provides pet food, supplies, services, and advice to struggling

pet owners in our community.

To assist local pet owners, HSSM also provides a series of

free microchip and rabies clinics in the Fall and Spring. The

2009 clinics were particularly successful, microchipping 2,768

animals over the course of 10 clinics.

As a nonprofit organization, HSSM strives to bring in money for

our programs in every way possible. For this reason, HSSM operates

two stores where the proceeds benefit HSSM.

HSSM’s Thrift Store accepts donations of clothes, appliances, household

items, and everything in between which we are able to turn around and sell

for 100% profit which all goes to care for the animals HSSM serves.

HSSM’s retail store carries great pet care products, ranging

from Furminator products (the best de-shedding tools on the

market), to all-natural treats, collars and leashes, the latest

pet fashions, and so much more. In 2009 the retail store

officially acquired the name “The BowWow Meow Boutique.”

All proceeds from the store’s sales benefit HSSM.

HSSM depends on volunteers for purposes ranging from daily

tasks to special events and everything in between. HSSM’s

volunteers must be at least 16 years of age.

Volunteers go through an orientation which covers information about HSSM

in general, how to handle animals, and what kinds of tasks they can and will

be doing as an HSSM volunteer. In 2009, HSSM had 1,046 active

volunteers in our database.

not because they're worthless,

but because they're priceless.”

and public relations arm. Development is responsible for donor

base development and growth as well as increasing revenue and

awareness throughout the shelter and community.

The Development Department was proud to put on its first Diamonds

for Dogs, Carats for Cats fundraiser with the IP Casino in 2009 and

the 4 th Annual Club Tiki Goes to the Dogs (and Cats) at the Beau

Rivage.

In the suffering economy of 2009, the Development

The following pages will give you a brief overview of HSSM’s financials.

At HSSM, we are so grateful for the support from our donors and community,

we feel we owe it to you to let you know how we are spending the money you invest

in us.

HSSM has received a four-star rating from Charity Navigator for the third time,

meaning we keep our administrative/fundraising expenses low and spend

most of our funds on our programs.

HSSM is always looking for bigger and better ways to help our furry

friends and that means bigger and better ways to save money so that it

can go where it is really needed.

Dear Friends and Supporters,

HSSM had an amazing year in 2009. From performing the 40,000 th surgery in the

Louise Fenner Claiborne Spay/Neuter Clinic to microchipping 2,768 animals through

our Free microchip clinics, every department has seen success.

However, HSSM needs to keep growing and expanding our programs to continue these

successes. Our community is still wrought with the problems of pet overpopulation. Pet

overpopulation is a community issue and HSSM cannot fight it alone.

Our supporters are our saviors, as we are the saviors for the animals we serve. Thank you for your ongoing

support and helping us save lives four paws at a time.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to call us at

228-863-3354 , write us at 2615 25 th Ave, Gulfport MS 39501 or email us at

And once again, thank you for your interest and support! Your support saves

lives! When you care, we’re there.
