Did you know?
“Successful aging is best understood as a process, rather than an
outcome – a way of doing and being,” says Betsy Sprouse, Ph.D.,
program manager of the AARP Foundation. “It is about our ongoing,
day‐to‐day efforts to live as well as possible during the latter part of
our lives. It is not confined to the most vital and vibrant among us.”
Another World
The town in which I live boasts a three story Embassy Suites hotel with a glass elevator. I
t ell people, jokingly, that the weekend excitement is riding up and down in the elevator.
The streets aren’t actually rolled up, there are cars moving up and down the main drag,
and the movies are still going, but probably 90 is the last show and most restaurants are
closed by then. For more excitement one needs to go further!
And I did. San Jose at 9:30 at night was vibrant, alive. Tall buildings, brightly lighted,
people on the streets, restaurants doing a thriving business. This was more like it. Years
ago, more than I’ll admit to, this was the ambience in which I thrived. Big city, lots going
on, no matter what the time of day or night. Newly graduated nurses, we would end our
evening shift at 11:00 PM, change clothes, and take off for Chicago’s Loop. Food was on
our minds, always! We climbed aboard the streetcar ignoring the dangers of going out at
night in that ared-0light district. We were young and we were immortal! Fortunately,
nothing ever happened to us. The streets were busy, cars, busses, streetcars; all public
transportation ran, although less frequently late at night. Crowded ells, the Illinois
Central Electric train, standing room only. It was a challenge and I loved it. There was a
special way you read the newspaper when sitting on the ICE. You folded your newspaper in
half, lengthwise, and then each page was folded over in half, read, turned, and the process
repeated. One never spread the paper out to its full width! Unthinkable!
Densely populated areas do have advantages. There is a larger variety of cultural
attractions, things to do, placed to go. Services are varied, large hospitals, big libraries,
museums and parks. There is also crowding, traffic, the noise of freeways and sirens.
Smaller communities may offer fewer amenities but one probably knows the checker in the
grocery store, and the clerk at the drug store.
I enjoy the area in which I live. I have a beautiful scene of flower fields when I drive the
few miles into the city proper. No ugly tenements or industrial areas pollute my vision.
When I walk I view mountains, trees, and if I choose I can walk in a state park, complete
with native vegetation and the possibility of some interesting four footed walkers! There
might also be a slithering park inhabitant on the trail. I’ll try to avoid him/her/it!
Certainly a big city would no longer by my choice of residence. But there is something
about the city, its tempo, its challenges and offerings which still excite and tempt me. I
guess, to paraphrase, you can take the girl out of the city, but you can’t take the city out
of the girl!
