WINDOW TRIM Original window trim should always be kept on existing windows, and matched on new window openings. Such detail gives a distinctive texture and character to an old building. This is almost always jamb (side) casing of about 5 inches, as well as head (top) casing, and a projecting sill that goes under the jamb casing. WINDOW HOOD CASING WINDOW HOOD, CASING, AND SILL ARE COVERED; WINDOWS LOSE IMPORTANCE SILL Historic window sashes are typically set back from the plane of the wall, which creates a play of light and shadow typical of old buildings. Many new window units are designed to be more or less flush with the wall plane; if such sashes are necessary, consider using sill extenders, or build up the trim around these windows to give a threedimensional break between the wall and window sash. 35
