Project Experience
Project Experience
Project Experience
Directional Drilling, RAF Stanbridge
Atkins was appointed by Anglian Water to design a sewage pumping
station and rising mains. Our geotechnical expertise was called upon to
assist with the evaluation of directional drilling for the pipeline system.
Manchester Airport, Second Runway
Design and construction supervision of a new 3km runway, taxi-ways
and holding bays, a 260m long cut and cover highway tunnel for the
A538, and a 12m high 300m long tunnel to permit the River Bollin to
pass under the new runway. Major earthworks included a 2 million
cubic metres embankment, 25m high across the Bollin Valley. We were
designers to the successful AMEC-Tarmac Joint Venture.
Notable aspects of our work were the geotechnical and foundation risk
assessment carried out as an aid to tendering, and the combination of
traditional and more advanced design techniques which resulted in an
optimised design for the embankments and tunnels.
Sheikh Isa Airbase, Bahrain
Construction of the 4.1km long runway and adjacent taxiways of the
Sheikh Isa Airbase entailed large cut and fill operations which were
the subject of a multi-million US dollar contractual dispute. Atkins was
commissioned to provide expert opinion on engineering geological,
geotechnical and materials handling issues as part of the arbitration
proceedings.
Our work included a review of the technical basis of the dispute (in the
USA, UK and Bahrain) followed by a programme of field investigation
and laboratory testing which was carefully targeted to provide additional
data from which independent conclusions could be drawn.
St Helena Airport, Atlantic Ocean
Access to St Helena Island is currently only possible by a lengthy boat
journey from South Africa or Ascension Island (the photograph below
shows the island’s capital, Jamestown). Following a government
decision to provide an airport on the island, Atkins was commissioned
to undertake initial and reference designs in advance of the award of a
design, build and operate contract for the airport.
We carried out geotechnical investigations and designs for the airport’s
runway, terminal and cross-country access road, integrating our work
with that of the airport engineers, construction logistics specialists
and environment team.
Terminal 5 Access and M25 motorway widening,
Heathrow Airport
Investigation and geotechnical design of the complex network of new
and upgraded highways needed to serve the proposed Terminal 5 and to
provide increased capacity for the adjacent M25 motorway.
London City Airport - extension
Geotechnical study for a proposed extension to London City Airport.
Work included a review of historical ground investigation data and
production of a report summarising geotechnical constraints.
Cargo Handling Building, Heathrow Airport
Site investigation and geotechnical design for the cargo building involved
a carefully optimised programme of work on the ‘air-side’ of the airport.
