“Educators must be committed to taking responsibility for the achievement of every student in their
school. They must support a culture of high expectations for all and work collaboratively
with colleagues to strengthen their instructional practices. It is only with this commitment that all our
students will be able to meet the challenges that face them, so that our country can compete
successfully, prosper, and be secure in the global community of the 21st Century.”
Connecting Math to Literacy Common Core
Within mathematics, it is important that we provide students an opportunity
to talk about math. It should be a gradual transformation of communication.
Elements of gradual transformation include:
A shift from teacher as sole questioner to both children and teacher as
questioners.
Children increasingly explaining and articulating their math ideas.
A shift from teacher as the source of all math ideas to children’s ideas also influencing the
direction of lessons.
Children increasingly taking responsibility for learning and for the evaluation of themselves
and others. This should promote student to student discourse and connect to
Math Practice #3.
MACC.K12.MP.6- Attend to Precision.
Mathematically proficient students try to communicate precisely to others. They try to use clear
definitions in discussion with others and in their own reasoning. They state the meaning of the
symbols they choose, including using the equal sign consistently and appropriately. They are
careful about specifying units of measure, and labeling axes to clarify the correspondence with
quantities in a problem. They calculate accurately and efficiently, express numerical answers
with a degree of precision appropriate for the problem context. In the elementary grades, students
give carefully formulated explanations to each other. By the time they reach high school
they have learned to examine claims and make explicit use of definitions.
To support our students in this practice, we can ask our students:
What mathematical language…, definitions…, and properties can you use to explain?
What symbols or mathematical notations are important in this problem?
Math Routine Spotlight
Wrap Up
The purpose of the Wrap Up is to help students evaluate and own their learning.
Students should understand how the lesson and activities relate to the learning goal.
What elements from the SLC Framework do you think align with this component of the
SLC Math Routine?
DQ1 with elements 1, 2 and 3 should be used within the Wrap Up of the routine.
AIMSweb now, and everyone seems to
have mastered that piece. By now, intervention
teachers should have completed
survey level assessments (SLAs) on all
identified students, and determined the
measure and level on which progress monitoring
will occur. It is very important to
create and stick to a progress monitoring
Mary McLeod Bethune
Mary McLeod Bethune is most famous as
the founder of Bethune-Cookman College in
Daytona Beach. However, she is a significant
figure in the early Civil Rights movement
as an advocate for the rights of women
and African-Americans. Mrs. Bethune founded
the National Council of Negro Women in
1935 and was an informal advisor on African-American
issues to President Franklin
D. Roosevelt. Due to her advocacy, in 1938
Bethune was appointed to the position of
Director of the Division of Negro Affairs,
and as such, became the first African-
American female to head a federal agency.
She was a member of
the delegation from
the National Association
for the Advancement
of Colored
People (NAACP) at
the founding of the
United Nations in
1945 where it drafted
the Universal
Declaration of Human
Rights.
By 1966, many women activists are frustrated with the Equal Employment
Opportunity Commission’s lack of aggressive enforcement. This leads Betty
Goldstein Friedan and Rev. Pauli Murray to the form the National Organization
for Women (NOW) as a leading organization to bring women into full
participation in the mainstream of American society.

Taking the FCAT: Frequently Asked
Questions and Answers
Are accommodations during testing permitted
for LF students, who by definition have
been excited from the ESOL program?
No, LF students have been exited
from the ESOL program because
they were determined to be proficient
in English. As such, they
are not eligible to receive accommodations
during testing.
The only ELLs who can receive
accommodations are those who are
actively enrolled in an ESOL program at
the time of testing (LY students).
Is eligibility to receive accommodations for
ELLs tied to the number of years the ELL
has been in an ESOL program or the student’s
language classification?
No. Any student who is actively enrolled in an
ESOL program is eligible to receive accommodations
during testing. This would be any LY student.
What are the testing accommodations that your
ELL students will be receiving?
State allowable accommodations are flexible setting,
flexible scheduling, additional time and assistance
How Is Science Instruction Affected by Common Core?
http://www.fldoe.org/newsletter/JustForParents/2012/JFP_November_Newsletter.pdf
Science instruction in Florida’s schools continues to be shaped by the Next Generation Sunshine
State Standards. Science courses now include a new component—science literacy instruction—
to help students read and write using the language of science. The standards that guide this instruction
are called the Common Core Standards for Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science,
and Technical Subjects.
Like any subject, science has its own conventions. Students learn science primarily through a
process called scientific inquiry: asking questions, conducting investigations, collecting evidence
to answer questions, and drawing evidence-based conclusions.
Scientific inquiry requires that students read, understand,
and learn from challenging scientific and technical
texts. Elaborate diagrams, data charts, and
graphs are often part of science-based texts. To truly
grasp scientific concepts, students must be familiar
with the language and principles in these texts and science
practices.
Here are some examples of skills children will be expected
to master in science class now that incorporate
the new literacy standards:
Identify the kinds of evidence used in science
Understand scientific words and phrases
Pay attention to precise details (a crucial aspect to
scientific investigation)
Evaluate intricate scientific arguments

Process complex information
Follow detailed descriptions of scientific events
and concepts
SHINE
We are now approaching the 4th nine
weeks of the 2012-2013 school year.
Mentors of all 1st year teachers, please
submit your 3rd quarter logs to Trish
Cordeiro BEFORE Spring Break.
Shine administrators, please update your
mentor/mentee Excel sheets and email
to Trish Cordeiro with your changes.
There are several schools that are creating
a positive, nurturing environment for
our new teachers. One “shining” example
is Allapatah Flats. SHINE facilitators,
Linda Schmeer, Wendy Portillo and Mary
Ellen Barrett, hold bi-monthly meetings
for their new teachers that include a variety
of topics gleaned from a needs assessment
each member completes.
Through break-out sessions, guest
speakers, and workshops, the teachers
gain knowledge of school, district and
state initiatives, protocols and routines.
Each meeting concludes with a survival
strategy such as a small memento, snack
or encouraging word.
monthly NEST meetings. The focus for the
year has been on Marzano’s Art & Science
of Teaching and Quality Instruction. They
have spent some time participating in professional
development focused on school
based initiatives such as cooperative learning,
Thinking Maps and the use of technology
to enhance instruction. Each month
mentors and mentees at Palm Pointe take
time to celebrate and share successes. They
have participated in a variety of activities
designed to deepen knowledge and develop
a common understanding of the Quality Instruction
Framework. Some of the session
topics include: Understanding the Framework
and the Long Forms, DQ5 – Student
Engagement, breaking down individual elements
and gaining a better understanding
of monitoring, DQ2 – Interacting with New
Knowledge, Reciprocal Teaching, and Response
to Literature. This month mentors
and mentees at Palm Pointe will participate
in a protocol that each educator share
something implemented from their learning
throughout the year. Each mentor and
mentee will bring student work and other
artifacts to share while participating in the
structured protocol and celebrate their
successes.
Awareness of New
GED Test
Starting in 2014, there will be a new
GED test. The current version of the
GED test is expiring at the end of
2013 and scores will expire too. Students
who have taken a GED test
since 2002 must complete the test on
the current version or they will have
to start over on the new version of the
test being released on January 2,
2014.
The new GED assessment has been
developed to help adults better prepare
for the types of educational and
career opportunities available in the
present and future economy, and it
corresponds to the work that is being
done in the K-12 environment. It will
continue to provide adults the opportunity
to earn a high school credential,
but it goes further by measuring skills
that are essential for career and college
readiness. Four content areas, aligned to
the Common Core State Standards, will
be assessed – literacy (reading and writing),
mathematics, science, and social
studies. The new test will primarily be
delivered on computer, as the content
standards being measured require item
types which cannot be administered in
the traditional paper and pencil format.
