36 years ago, a 13-year-old boy served tea and coffee to the steel traders in
Per¸sembe Pazari, Instanbul’s old iron and steel market centre. At the age of 16 he
took his first job in the industry. Seven years later he formed his first steel trading
company. Recep Çelik is now the owner and Managing Director of Çelik Metal, and
Buderus Edelstahl’s authorized stockholder in Turkey.
This successful self-made man is now entering
a new league as one of the big five
in the Turkish tool-steel market. In Hadimköy,
on the European side of Istanbul, Çelik
Metal is building its central stockholding
facility with a total of 2,000 square metres
of space on two levels, of which half will
initially be used for storage. By mid 2010,
Recep Çelik intends to close his existing
stockholding facilities in Bayrampa¸sa and
Ikitelli, and concentrate all activities in
Kirac/Hadimköy. The official opening of the
facility will be in October 2010.
In early September 2009, Michael Renk,
Tool Steel Sales, and Michael Hammer,
General Sales Manager, Buderus Edelstahl,
visited the company in Turkey. “We are in
close contact, and meet regularly”, says
Michael Renk. It is not only the central
stockholding facility currently under construction
that we are discussing, we are
also setting the stage for the future. “In
times of crisis like these”, comments
Michael Renk, “it is extraordinarily important
to be there for each other. We are
pleased that we have been able to provide
Çelik Metal with an exceptional material in
the form of our successful steel Thruhard
Supreme®, which is in strong demand in
Turkey and its neighbouring markets.”
The high level of interest in Buderus
Edelstahl know-how was again evident last
November at the KALIP 2008 Expo in Istanbul.
Çelik Metal’s large exhibition stand was
exceptionally well visited, and the Buderus
Edelstahl symposium also attracted more
than a hundred interested visitors. The subject
was of course Thruhard Supreme®. “We
note”, says Michael Renk, that it is precise-

ly our innovative Thruhard Supreme® steel
with its outstanding properties that is well
received in the constantly growing economic
area of Turkey.”
Recep Çelik makes good use of this competitive
advantage. Çelik Metal’s product
range goes well beyond closed-die forging
steel, and is already focusing strongly on
plastic mould steel and stainless steels. Because
in addition to automobile manufacturers
and their suppliers, there are numerous
producers of smaller mass products,
which cannot be produced without suitable
With an estimated population of over
15 million, Istanbul is the largest city in
Turkey, and one of the world’s largest capital
cities. With its unique position astride
the Bosporus, a 30 km long strait separating
the continents of Europe and Asia, Istanbul
is both Turkey’s dominant marketplace
and transshipment hub, and an economic
centre of global importance. Its
pivotal location gives Turkey advantages in
the field of steel trading, with machining
and pre-machining gaining in importance.
This country on the edge of Europe borders
“With Recep Çelik and Pinar Aran, we
have two strong networkers on board”, says
Michael Renk. “They both bring great commitment
and energy to their work. Çelik
Metal serves customers ordering locally,
whilst Mr Pinar Aran has been our local
agent for almost 20 years for customers
importing directly.” Pinar Aran celebrated
his 70th birthday this year, but is not considering
retiring. He still spends more time
“Recep Çelik and Pinar Aran are committed
professionals with an encyclopaedic
knowledge of the market”, concludes
Michael Renk. “We think and act the same
way, and we complement each other.” Recep
Çelik, Pinar Aran and Buderus Edelstahl
all emphasize teamwork, innovation and
excellent customer service. They have been
sharing this dedication for many years,
which Recep Çelik sums up perfectly when
he says: love your job, whatever you do!
