Easter 2013
Loveland, Ohio
___________________________________________________________________________________________
Learning, Living, Loving ... our Catholic Faith
Easter is about life, so let’s laugh and rejoice!
Jerry Seinfeld states, “Death is people’s number two fear, and public speaking is actually number one. This means most of
us would rather be in the coffin, instead of giving the eulogy.” For me though, death is not much of a laughing matter. In
fact, I am not a big fan of death. It frightens me. It makes me nervous. It gets me anxious. Death has always made me
feel this way. Even as a child, there would be times when I would get so worked up, my parents would tell me to think
about something happy to take my mind off of it. On those occasions, I would daydream about Donny and Marie Osmond.
Somehow those two smiling siblings’ song of “I’m a little bit country, I’m a little bit rock and roll” would always distract me
enough to cause me to forget about my uneasiness about “the end”.
But in this season of Easter, there is no escaping focusing on death. Lent has just led us through forty days of the desert
where the Church had invited us to contemplate on what it is we needed to die to. What are the habits or actions we cling
to, that we need to remove or expire from our everyday existence? What are the things or thoughts we hold tightly to, that
we need to let go of and allow to die off?
It is because of these sullen and melancholy sentiments, that most people tend to favor Christmas over Easter. Christmas
is seen as a joyous and jolly celebration of Jesus coming to earth as a baby, and all of us are happy about this excitement.
Easter on the other hand, is about Jesus leaving earth because of his painful passion and death, and all of us are sorrowful
about it.
Or at least these are the emotions we typically display to others; particularly as it pertains to Easter. We often neglect to
exude much Easter cheer. The reality though, is that Easter is a time of great joyousness. If we can be enthusiastic over
Jesus’ earthly birth at Christmas, should we not be exponentially more ecstatic over his heavenly birth at Easter? Ought
we not to be more openly animated with others about what we have been born to? Now that we have died to our
sinfulness during Lent, should we not be exulting and delighting in being born with Christ at the resurrection?
Easter is about life. It is about new and everlasting life. Certainly this should be something that should not bring us down,
but instead should lift our spirits (since it literally does raise our Spirits.) Christ is risen. We will also rise again. Alleluia! It
is a time to praise the Lord and rejoice! Maybe it is a time to laugh about, or at least laugh at, death after all.
THE BLESSING OF THE EASTER BASKET
Why are families taking baskets of food into the Day
Chapel? It is a tradition in Eastern Europe to bless the
Easter food before it is prepared for Easter dinner. In earlier
times, meat and dairy products were excluded from the daily
diet during the entire season of Lent. As the end of the strict
fast approached, people showed their joy and gratitude by
taking their food to church to be blessed and eaten after the
Easter Liturgy. This tradition celebrates the joy of the
resurrection as the Easter meal breaks six weeks of Lenten
fasting, and the foods represent fare abstained from during
Lent. St. Columban will once again celebrate this tradition on
Holy Saturday, March 30 at 1:00 p.m. in the Day Chapel.
Families who wish to participate in the basket blessing are
invited to bring samplings of foods they will eat on Easter
Day in a basket (baked goods, bread, eggs, ham). If you get
a chance, come and have your Easter food blessed!

Welcome to our newest members! They will receive the Sacraments of Initiation
and enter the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil on March 30.
“Spirit and Truth.” It was the response Jesus gave to the woman he met that day at the well as he
was passing through Samaria. Part of the dialogue between Jesus and the Samaritan woman was
about worship. Jesus informs her that the hour is coming, and is already here, when true
worshippers will worship the Father in Spirit and Truth; and indeed the Father seeks such people to
worship him. God is Spirit, and those who worship him must worship in Spirit and Truth. Sunday
after Sunday we gather to proclaim and experience the Spirit of God. Then, we are sent into the
world to live out this reality in truth. Namely, to do, to make present in the world what we profess in
church.
While we are all called to worship and live out our lives in Spirit and Truth, there are some among us who go well beyond such
a call. We know them. We see them. We experience their Spirit and Truth in the daily market places of our lives. Often such
people go unnoticed. Yet, their contribution to our parish, our city and this world is enormous. Started in 2009, our St.
Columban Catholic Community gives the St. Columban Spirit and Truth Award on an annual basis. Our past Spirit and Truth
Award honorees are fellow parishioners who are outstanding in their faith, who gather with us on Sunday to worship in Spirit
and in Truth, who live out their baptismal call on a daily basis, who promote and inspire others into living out their own lives in
Spirit and Truth, and who take seriously the command of Jesus to serve others. The 2013 honorees were nominated by fellow
parishioners and presented their award at the Grand Affair on February 23. Congratulations and thank you to the 2013 Spirit
and Truth Honorees – we are truly blessed to have you as part of our St. Columban Community!
DUSTAN BRAY and his wife
Stephanie and their two high school
aged daughters, Nora and Maeve,
joined St. Columban parish in 2001.
Since then, Dustan has been involved
in all aspects of life at St. Columban.
You may see him at Sunday Mass
where he serves as a Eucharistic
Minister leader, or on the volleyball
court where he has coached for many
years. Maybe it was leading a pack of boy scouts to their
next campout, even though he doesn’t have a son in the
troop, or maybe you have seen him or his name next to
publicity for the High School Youth Group. A year and a
half ago, Dustan saw the need to start a youth group for
our parish. Dustan and a team of other parents came up
with a plan for a youth group. With Dustan in the lead it
was destined to be a success. Cissy, who nominated him,
stated, “We all admire Dustan’s enthusiasm and “can do”
attitude, especially where youth are involved.” Dustan
doesn’t just come up with ideas for meetings, but he is
the one doing the research, finding people who are
successful in youth ministry and learning from their best
practices. He uses the latest technology to reach our
youth, and most importantly, “puts himself out there for
them.” Amy Maricocchi, said, “ Dustan is someone who
makes a deep impression on our teens because he is
willing to share his faith, show them how important it is to
stand up for your faith, and really challenge them to live
out their faith. He also loves working with them and being
a great role model for our teens.”
Congratulations, Dustan!
ANA INFANTINO is someone that makes you
wonder where she gets all her energy. Ana
and her husband Chris, who joined the parish
in 2001, are raising four children: AJ who goes
to St. Xavier and Maria, Alina and Dominic
who attend St. Columban School. She started
volunteering as a preschool teacher when her
children were in Sunday school. She decided
her skills were better served in the
administrative side so she helped coordinate
the program. But she didn’t stop there. When a committee
was forming for the first Grand Affair 10 years ago, Ana
jumped on board and would be a part of that committee for
the next 8 years. As a young mom, she saw other groups in
the area that provided fellowship and instead of joining one of
those, she decided to start one herself at St. Columban.
Mom’s Connection was a huge success and between play
dates, scrapbooking, speakers, and great social events, this
group was just what Ana had envisioned. When her children
entered school, she helped in the classroom, was a room
mom, helped with fund drives, coached and served as PTO
president and vice-president. She attended CRHP and
recruited an amazing amount of people for the following year.
Tara Nelson stated, “Ana is generous and giving in every
aspect.” Even though Ana is now a personal trainer and works
at Simply Power Yoga, as well as a part time aide at St.
Columban, she continues to do whatever she can to
volunteer. Kristin Stock says, “Ana is the one you can call and
she is more than happy to give of herself to help anyone.”
Congratulations, Ana!
For LEN TIMMEL, church has always been important and central to his life and he has quietly lived his faith for the
past 81 years. He lives out his baptismal call of service every day, and his grown children, Alison Moriarity
(husband Jim), Steve Timmel (wife Mary), Donna Schinke (husband Mark), and Lisa Timmel, can tell you that
attending church has never been optional for Len. Leonard and his wife, Joyce, who have been married for 51
years, moved to St. Columban parish when his grandchildren started school here. He wanted to support the
parish that was educating his family and he has never missed a Grandparent’s Day! He worked many years on the
festival set-up and tear-down committee, keeping pace with much younger men. He could even be found grilling
chicken over the open pit even when he was in his 70’s. In his 80’s Len slowed down by manning the Primetimer’s
Split the Pot booth for the entire weekend! Many of you may know Leonard as an 11:30 usher, or a member of Primetimers, but do
you know what his other passion is…taking care of the many plants and church grounds at St. Columban. The parish staff can tell
you that he is up here all the time pruning, weeding, and watering in the hottest of summer days. In the fall he is weeding out the
beds, trimming the bushes back and in the spring he is cleaning out beds and planting new bulbs. Our parish has beautiful
landscaped beds and flowers because Leonard takes care of them. Kathy Cox, who designs and purchases the flowers and
arranges the beds says, “There is no way we could have such beautiful flowers and landscaped areas if it wasn’t for Leonard. He
works over and above keeping everything green and thriving. He is a great guy!” He has found the way to serve our parish
community in the most behind the scenes way by bringing such beauty to our grounds for us to enjoy! Congratulations, Leonard!
WHO IS A DEACON?
WHAT DOES A DEACON DO?
WHY DO WE NEED DEACONS?
You are cordially invited to a meeting of
interested men (and wives) to learn more
about the role of deacons in the
Archdiocese of Cincinnati. If you are
considering a vocation in the diaconate or
would just like to learn more about the
ministry of deacons in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, this
will be a very helpful informational session.
Besides discussing the role of deacons (and wives), the
meeting will include information about the requirements for
admission into the Deacon Formation Program, as well as
an explanation of the ongoing process of discernment to
the diaconate and possible discernment methods. Finally,
there will be time for you to ask any questions in order to
help you to better understand the ministry of deacons.
The meeting will be held Tuesday April 23 rd , 7:00-8:30
p.m. in the St. Brigid room. Barry Mersmann, Director of
the Diaconate Program for the Archdioceses of Cincinnati,
will be the presenter. If you plan on attending, please call
the Parish Office to register and so we are sure to have
enough handouts.
Catholicism DVD series for
small groups
There is still time for you to join your
fellow parishioners for the journey of a
lifetime! For the past few months we
have gathered once a month (either on
Mondays at 10:45 a.m. or Wednesdays at
7:45 p.m.) to watch an episode of the “Catholicism: Journey
of a Lifetime” series and then discuss its content. Those
who have attended have greatly enjoyed these gatherings,
and we have had new participants joining each time.
The episodes stand alone, so even if you have not seen the
earlier ones, you are still invited and welcome to come to
our next one. Check out the schedule at the bottom for the
upcoming dates.
There is no outside reading or preparation required
beforehand to attend and there is no cost to participate. All
that is necessary is a desire to want to learn more about
the beauty and truth of our Catholic faith. So make plans
now to come to the next Catholicism DVD gathering, and
enjoy a front row seat to the breathtaking cinematography
HYMNALS
Our project to replace the hymnals in church
is off to a great start! Thanks to your
generosity, we just ordered our first shipment
of books to replace the hymnals that are in
the worst condition. There is still time for you
to donate a hymnal if you’d like to be part of this effort.
Some people have donated a book in honor of someone or
in memory of a loved one. Some have donated them in the
name of their families. Some have asked to remain
anonymous. The hymnals we now use were purchased in
2002. They have served us well for over ten years, and
those who purchased hymnals at that time and in the years
since have given a gift that we use every time we gather for
prayer.
We invite you to consider donating a hymnal for the cost of
$16.00 which covers the cost of shipping and a nameplate
for the front of the book. Envelopes for your donation can
be found in the hall rack and on the offertory table. After
completing the information we need, you may put these in
the collection basket. If you have questions or would like
more information, please contact Mary Bellman at the
Parish Office. Thank you very much for your consideration!
Moving the Parish Campaign Forward
In 2008, St Columban launched a parish campaign to
address the five most pressing needs of the parish which
were:
1. Reduce outstanding debt
2. Create a Parish Hall
3. Build Parish Offices
4. School Improvements
5. Build a Parish Activity Center
Parish families pledged $2 million in 2008 and another
$850,000 in 2011. This allowed us to obtain a bridge loan
and complete the first four items above. Ongoing pledge
payments and other contributions are used to retire the
bridge loan. Thank you to those who pledged and are
fulfilling their payments. Once all pledges have been paid in
full, we forecast having some cash on hand for the Parish
Activity Center but not enough to start construction. Several
initiatives are underway to determine how and when
construction can start.
One, the plans for the Parish Activity Center are being
reviewed to identify opportunities for lowering the cost while
still delivering a facility that meets the needs of the parish.
Meetings are planned with the architect to explore multiple
options.
Two, we are identifying ways to raise the remaining funds to
meet the construction costs. This includes identifying nonparish
sources of funds (grants, gifts, etc.) as well as a fund
drive within the parish, potentially as soon as this year.
There has been some feedback that we should start
construction now and the money will come. This creates the
proverbial 'chicken and egg' scenario. St Columban will
obtain a bridge loan to begin construction. Pledges from
parishioners are used as collateral. If we don't have pledges
as collateral, a bank will not provide us with a bridge loan.
They want some guarantee that St Columban has the
means to repay the loan. Pledges serve this purpose.
To all the families that have supported the campaign to date,
thank you!! Without your prayers and financial support, we
would not have accomplished the first four items above. As
the parish grows, the need for the Parish Activity Center
continues to grow as well. We are committed to realizing this
space. It is not a matter of 'if', just a matter of 'when'.
LIVING YOUR STRENGTHS
Are you clear about the strengths with
which God has blessed you and how
they can enable you to live out your life's
purpose? While millions of people in the
U.S. are actively involved in some sort of
religious organization, many people feel
disengaged from their faith communities.
More than half report that they really
don't get the opportunity in their
congregation to do what they do best. The problem is this:
too many people's talents are going unappreciated. But it
doesn't have to be this way.
Join fellow St. Columban parishioners in this two-session
workshop designed to help you discover your God-given
strengths and to learn how to use them in your life both
within and beyond the St. Columban community. Led by
parishioners Cherylanne Skolnicki, Kathleen Hunt, and
Lisa Melink, this amazing workshop will help you unlock
the secrets to Living Your Strengths! Sessions will be held:
Sunday, April 21 and Sunday, May 5
from 2:00-5:00 p.m. in the St. Patrick room.
To register, please email frontdesk@stcolumban.org or call
683-0105 to make arrangements to purchase the Living
Your Strengths book from the Parish Office for $15. Inside
the book, you'll find a unique code to access a short online
assessment which you'll need to complete prior to the first
session on April 21. Instructions will be provided to you
with the book.
As most of you know, St. Columban
switched over from Pledge Connect to
Online Giving on February 1,
2013. As with many transitions, there
have been a few bumps, but for the
most part, we are very pleased with
the new system. After much research, it was determined
that Online Giving provided our parishioners with a
program that was user friendly, secure, and easily
managed by you, rather than the Parish Accounting Office.
If you have setup donations through Online Giving and
you no longer need parish envelopes, please contact Lisa
Houser in the Parish Office and we will discontinue the
envelopes for you.
For those of you who would like to setup donations
through Online Giving, simply go to the St. Columban
website, www.stcolumban.org, click on the Online Giving
icon on the left, and follow the prompts.
At this time, tuition is still managed through Pledge
Connect, but we will transition to Online Giving for the
next school year. Please watch newsletters and Edline for
additional information regarding your tuition setup.
Contact Lisa Houser in the Parish Office if you have any
questions or need help with the Online Giving program.
