On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I am
pleased to present the 2011-2012 Honor Roll
of Donors of the Academy of Our Lady of
Good Counsel.
With this report we are reminded that a
Good Counsel High School education that is
90+ years strong is made possible by your
generous support. In rapidly changing times
and a fluctuating economy one thing remains
constant: Good Counsel High School is a
student-centered place that provides young
women with the academic, spiritual, social and personal opportunities
to become compassionate, confident leaders in this diverse and rapidly
changing world.
A Good Counsel graduate leaves well-prepared and is recognized as such.
The Class of 2013, for example, earned a total of $17.4 million in scholarship
offers; entrance into the best colleges and universities in the country; and
public recognition for excellence in academics, athletics and service. You
share in this accomplishment because you helped to make it possible!
Good Counsel Academy is blessed with strong enrollment and deeply
dedicated faculty and staff, but we need your continued support. Economic
recovery is steady, but slow and we know you have choices. Choose GCA!
Knowing that you share our belief in the importance of investing in future
generations of Good Counsel women we ask that you consider making
GCA a priority in your giving.
We are truly grateful for your contributions of financial support and time
to Good Counsel Academy over this past year. Both are critical and
demonstrate to the GCA community that its alumnae and other benefactors
are committed to its current and future life.

It is with great pride and gratitude that we pay
tribute to our esteemed Board of Trustees, alumnae,
faculty, staff, parents, alumnae parents, students
and friends in our 2011-2012 Academy of Our Lady
of Good Counsel Honor Roll. GCA IS ON THE
MOVE!!!!!!!….college acceptances continue
to be top notch…..Vassar College, Carnegie
Mellon University, Georgetown University , Boston
College, Northeastern University, University of
Pittsburgh, Culinary Institute of America, NYU,
SUNY Binghamton, George Washington University,
University of Melbourne, Villanova University,
Brandeis University, Fordham University, American
University, Albright College, Tulane University, Syracuse University, Hamilton, U
Conn, College of Sciences in Philadelphia to name a few….and our alumnae
continue their studies at Columbia University, Harvard Law School,
Manhattan College among others. The careers of our recent alumnae include:
law, engineering, medicine, social work, finance, accounting, computer science,
communication, education, and online careers to site a few.
The GCA Family is thriving as evidenced by 100% Board, 80% Faculty/Staff,
close to 100% parent and 97% student participation in our advancement efforts
and beyond….. With this support, students continue to AWAKEN to their own
possibilities and DISCOVER themselves, each developing her unique, God-given
talents, always remembering that her gifts have been given for the service of
others! I think that the students will agree that cultivating a culture of Gospel
values, academic excellence and compassion, the qualities of confident women,
is what sets GCA apart!
Those connected with GCA have shared their time, talent and resources to
keep the school community on the cutting edge of academic life, including the
systematic development of the STEM program (science, technology, engineering,
mathematics). At the same time, the program is aimed at preparing young
women to navigate a world of challenge and opportunity.
As we look with hope and excitement to GCA’s tomorrows, we are filled with
thanks for your generosity and loyal support which are ever-critical to our
success. And, our success is truly that of continuing the mission of holistic
education, that disposition of faith and maturity of heart and mind that enable
our graduates to bless their worlds. As this report indicates, you are among
the many strong supporters of our mission and our commitment to educate a
diverse population while keeping tuition affordable. We call upon the blessings
referred to in the words of St. Francis, “It is in giving that we receive.” May joy
fill your heart in knowing that the world will be a better place because of the
spiritual, moral, and intellectual fiber of our youth.
Our recent 91st Anniversary Gala and Wall of Fame was a grand event. Those
who attended the celebration spanned the decades and unleashed an energy of
pride and promise that will mark the advance of Catholic education of women
in the Divine Compassion tradition… The Class of 2017 is 100+ students
thanks to your love and support of GCA!!!
Thank you for your generosity and for giving us reason to count on your
continued support of GCA’s commitment to a future that holds great promise for

The Academy of Our Lady of Good Counsel, founded by the Sisters of
the Divine Compassion, is a private, Catholic college-preparatory high
school for young women dedicated to the development of the unique
potential of each student. Focusing on academic excellence, gospel

The Shield is tinctured in Our Lady’s colors and displays the
“Morning Star” or “Star of the Sea” of the Blessed Virgin in a
shield within the shield. The larger shield bears two horizontal
bars, taken from the coat of arms of Monsignor Preston,
co-founder of the Sisters of the Divine Compassion. The
white field divided by the blue bars gives us the symbolism
of “white plains” as a canting reference to White Plains
wherein the Academy is situated. The cross and other elements
in the upper part are symbols of this religious community
so closely associated with the Passion of Our Lord.
The motto Auspice Maria-“under the inspiration of Mary”-is a
reminder to every girl who attends The Academy of Our Lady
of Good Counsel High School, that Our Lady is indeed the heart
of our Alma Mater.

from HCG (Human Chorionic
Gondaotropin) vs. Diet to The Effect
of Energy Drinks on Teens. The
STEM Program students pursue
research in the areas of science,
social technology, math and
engineering. Underclasswomen in
the program are currently working
on Engineering;Physics with
engineering applications, Robotics
and cutting edge applications for
Android/Mobile phones.
Good Counsel Academy High
School hosted the first annual
Math Olympiad on Saturday, April
20th for-thirty two 7th and 8th
grade girls from eight schools
throughout Westchester and
Putnam counties. The girls came
together to participate in this fun
math competition designed to
demonstrate the importance of
mathematics in today’s society
and foster a greater understanding
of how girls can achieve great
things as a result of studying math.
Theresa Fanelli,’16, organized
the event and successfully fulfilled
her Gold Award objective, receiving
the highest honor given by the Girl
Scouts of America.
Athletic: Athletic Director, Maura
Henderson Lynch, ’86, led
the varsity basketball team to a
successful season, capturing the
2013 Bronx/Westchester Catholic
High School Athletic Association
(CHSAA) title, the NYC CHSAA title,
and CHSAA 2nd in the state. In just
the second year of the X-Country
team, the GCAHS freshmen
captured CHSAA 2nd place in the
State Championship. We are also
proud to report that every GCAHS
varsity team made it to the Division
Playoffs
Service: The “Seven for Sandy”
hurricane recovery campaign was
created by GCAHS faculty and
students to help those hardest hit
by the super storm. The Sevenfor
Sandy campaign asked each
student to contribute at least $7
and presented two installments of
nearly $500 each, plus donations of
much needed toiletries and cleaning
supplies.
Wall of Fame: The annual Wall of
Fame Gala was held on Thursday,
April 25th and honored five
outstanding GCAHS Alumnae:

not only provides economic assistance to those families
who find it increasingly challenging to send their children to a good
Catholic school such is GCAHS, but it supports all of our daughters’

had her 17th grandchild - 13 boys

Kathleen Schultz Oles ‘61 retired
from being the Director of the Bethel
Senior Center in Connecticut and
moved to Lancaster, PA.
The Class of 1963 enjoyed
their 50th Reunion at GCA on
June 1, 2013.
Norie Kaufmann Leonard ’63
enjoyed her 50th Reunion along with
17 of her classmates. Thanks for the
wonderful memories.

’64 retired as Senior Manager of
Corporate Affairs at Kraft Foods
in September.
The newly equipped and expanded
technology lab at Good Counsel
Academy HS was named The
Dr. Susan Merritt, R.D.C., ’64
Technology Center in honor of Sr.
Susan M. Merritt, R.D.C.’64. Sr. Susan
was a former mathematics and
computer science teacher at GCAHS.
Dr. Susan M. Merritt ’64 received
the Green Pace Award on April
30, 2013. During Susan Merritt’s
tenure, the Sisters of the Divine
Compassion, sharing the Pace
White Plains campus, have become
a leading environmental steward
in the White Plains community,
Westchester and beyond. The Sisters
have made it a priority to transform
the Good Counsel Campus and all
ministries at Good Counsel into an
energy-efficient and environmentally
responsible community.
White Plains Assistant Police Chief,
Anne FitzSimmons ’72, swore in
her son, John FitzSimmons, as one of
five new White Plains police officers
at a ceremony on January 5, 2013.
Meri Lee Testa ’72 is currently
enrolled in a pet grooming
certification program and is
now doing her hands on training.
Her son is a freshman in high
school.
Catherine Carson-Gabriel
(Caitlin) ’73 writes to share that
she recently earned a Master of
Education degree from Lesley
University, after earning a BA from
Fordham University in 1977. She
has had a fulfilling and varied career
working with adults and children
in social service and healthcare
settings. She is looking forward to
Reunion 2013 and catching up
with old friends.
Dr. Patricia Marrone Kallis ’78 a
periodontist, is married to John, an
oral surgeon, who she met in dental
school. They have two children,
Michelle, who is in medical school,
and Nicholas, who is in dental school.
Patricia and her husband have their
own practice, Premier Oral Surgery
Group in Englewood Cliffs,
New Jersey.
Marianne Gambelli ’77 delivered
the commencement address at the
2013 graduation ceremony. Marianne
is the EVP, Chief Investment Officer
for Horizon Media and is responsible
for the investment strategy for clients
such as Geico and CapitalOne. Prior
to her current position, Marianne
was the President of NBC Network
Advertising Sales.
Susan Varsames ’78 is
celebrating her 11th year as founder
of the Holistic Learning Center in
White Plains, where she and her
staff provide expertise in services
for children with Autism and
Developmental Disorders.
Christina Pasqualone, daughter
of Isabel Pasqualone ’79 was
one of the 41 finalists from the NY
auditions of American Idol which
aired on January 16, 2013. The show
is currently in its 12th season.
Rowena Paz del Castillo ’81 has
a 13 year old daughter named
Mercedes. She is currently working
as a private duty nurse and as
an executive administrator for
Lifeline Technologies, Inc. Rowena
is a member of the Friends of the
Eastchester Public Library and is
becoming a Deacon at the Village
Lutheran Church in Bronxville, NY.
Colleen Daly Coffey’s ’84
daughter, Ashley, will be graduating
from Boston College in May, 2013
Sheryl L. Day-Davis ’84 has been
employed as a Westchester County
Probation Officer for 14 years.
She is the first Female Offender
Specialist for the department with
multiple commendations. She is
the founder of a multiple award
winning DWI Female Offender
Program. She has been featured
on the Today Show and her
program made the cover of the
Journal News. She is married with
2 children and 1 grandchild. She
has also started a partnership with
Westchester Community College
to successfully facilitate educating
criminal offenders seeking
rehabilitation.

Morten Jespersen on September
15th, 2012 at The Chapel of Divine
Compassion. Her sister, Meghan

Tracey Richards ‘87 is happy to
announce that her oldest daughter,
Victoria, will be attending GCA in the
fall as a freshman.
The Class of 1987 celebrated their
25th Reunion in the Fall of 2012 with

Jennifer Goodrich-Joyce ‘88 and

Nicole Freeman ‘07 was the keynote
speaker for the 2013 Senior Luncheon.
She graduated with a BBA in Business
Administration from Pace University,
with a concentration in Human
Resources, and currently works as
a Human Resources Coordinator at
CBL-Path, Inc. in Rye New York
Christina Barreiro ’08 was the
keynote speaker at the GCAHS
annual Young Alumnae Brunch.
Christina received a BA in Business
Administration from Fordham
University in 2012 and just completed
her first year at Harvard Law School.
Marie Russell ’09 graduated from
Cornell University with a degree in
Marine Biology.
Akunna Faith Uka ’10 writes to tell
us she is one of the 62 Truman Scholars
nationwide this year. The scholarship
offers $30,000 towards graduate school
for those interested in public service
and has the benefit of a network of
like-minded people, including the first
female Secretary of State, Madeleine
Albright. She thanks the Good Counsel
community for instilling the values
necessary for a career dedicated to
public service. It was during her time
at Good Counsel that she began to
develop a sense of responsibility to
her local and broader communities.
