HELICAL GEAR UNITS<br />

Information<br />

Horizontal or vertical, right angle or parallel, foot mounted or shaft mounted <strong>gear</strong> <strong>units</strong> Greaves <strong>helical</strong><br />

<strong>gear</strong> <strong>units</strong> are fully metric and are suitable for most applications in both horizontal and vertical drives.<br />

Based on a modular design and construction, the high degree of interchangeability of parts and subassemblies<br />

among all variants effect considerable economies of production, whilst maintaining the<br />

highest standard of <strong>com</strong>ponent and unit elements. A wide choice of ratio is available based on<br />

re<strong>com</strong>mendations laid down in AGMA standards with additional half ratio steps.<br />

Profile ground <strong>helical</strong> <strong>gear</strong>s together with spiral bevel <strong>gear</strong>s lapped in pairs, ensure high standards of<br />

accuracy, surface finish and quiet running characteristics. Helical <strong>gear</strong>s are fitted in parallel shaft <strong>units</strong><br />

whilst <strong>units</strong> with shaft at right angle incorporated spiral bevel and <strong>helical</strong> <strong>gear</strong>s. High quality alloy case<br />

hardening material provides long life, wear resistance and fatigue strength.<br />

The high power to weight ratio of all <strong>units</strong> <strong>com</strong>bines with low volume to enable installation in the most<br />

difficult situations. Each of the two variants contains unique features suited to their own operating<br />

conditions.<br />

Horizontal <strong>units</strong> feature optional right or left hand shaft arrangements from the same sub-assemblies and<br />

are available as foot mounted, shaft mounted or foot/shaft mounted types.<br />

Vertical <strong>units</strong> are available in three versions : Standard <strong>units</strong>, heavy duty stirrer types and cooling tower<br />

drives.<br />

Units for heavy duty stirrer and cooling tower drives are derivatives of the standard unit by addition of<br />

housing on the output shaft line to increase the size of the shaft and the bearings.<br />

All types include the following features to provide the best solution to the needs of the vertical<br />

application and the high reliability which is most important in modern plant:<br />

- Vertical case joints allows easy maintenance and fitting of lubrication pipe work in one half of the <strong>gear</strong><br />

case so that the lubrication system is not disturbed when dismantling.<br />

- Drive and construction ensure freedom from leakage down the output shaft.<br />

- Forced lubrication of all top bearings.<br />

- Taper roller bearings fitted to output shaft for high overhung load and axial thrust load capacities.<br />
