Spelling Bee Regional Final 2013
Following their success in the Stanwell Year
7 competition and, as the Year 7 champions,
James Dawson, Ben Evans, Karishma
Krishna and Phoebe Skelton travelled to
Llanelli to take part in the South Wales regional
competition of Spelling Bee. A number
of other local schools took part with 163
Year 7 competitors in total. All had worked
hard to learn the vocabulary and to master
the French alphabet sounds with the help of
Jack Ruelle and Guillaume Bigsby, their
‘mentors’. They all displayed their ability
and courage on the day and are to be commended
for their performances. Our hopes
were on Karishma who managed to progress
to the second round where she faced stiff opposition.
She gained a high score but was
unfortunate not to progress to the final round.
This is the third year the competition has
been held but the first time Stanwell has
taken part. We hope that our finalists this
year gained from their experience and will be
able to advise our future Year Seven ‘Spelling
Bees’.
Year 8 Paris Trip
The annual
visit to
Paris was
again thoroughly
enjoyed
by
both the
staff and
the 53 pupils of Year 8. Pupils visited some of
the famous Paris monuments including the Eiffel
Tower and Notre Dame Cathedral. On arriving
in Paris there was the chance to enjoy
the atmosphere of the city on an evening cruise
on the River Seine followed by a meal in a restaurant.
The highlight for some pupils was the
day spent in Disneyland where a St David’s
Day event was taking place. The pupils had the
opportunity to
celebrate the culture
of Wales and
then contrast it
with that of
France. Pupils
practised their
language skills
and quizzes were
held on aspects
of the French and
the Welsh cultures. Our thanks to Daniel Anderton
for his assistance in helping the teachers
and for his enthusiasm to use his language
skills.
