4.Stanwell conservation/wildlife area.
Progress is being made on the new conservation
area for the school. The more demanding
physical work is planned for the
summer holidays 2013, when the plot designated
for the wildlife project is to be
cleared and designed the way the committee
and the pupils from the feeder primary
schools wanted. In the meantime, the funds
donated by Keep Wales Tidy “Wild Weekend”
scheme have been used to purchase
two wooden benches for the conservation
area. Also committee members have located
the best sites for some of the bird, bat
and bug boxes produced by pupils in Year
7. Some of these boxes can be seen in the
trees located around the school.
5. The Eco Youth Conference 2013: A selection of
Eco-Stanwell committee members attended the annual
Eco Youth Conference, held at the Millennium
Centre, Cardiff Bay on the 25th June 2013. This
event was organised for the whole of Wales and
young students from many schools came together to
share ideas, participate in workshops and listen to
visiting speakers. The Stanwell pupils must be commended
for the way they represented the school,
speaking confidently at the conference and mixing
well with other like-minded young people. The highlight
of the day according to the Year 8 pupils was
speaking to Peter Davies, Commissioner for a Sustainable
Future in Wales. The commissioner spent
the lunch break speaking to Eco-Stanwell members
about his ideas for a sustainable future in Wales and
asking the pupils about their experiences and ideas
within Stanwell School.
During the conference some visiting speakers
communicated through the medium of
Welsh and to help with translation pupils
were supplied with individual headphones.
