ASC and IU Survey
Grand Prize Winner!
Pete Gaby of Denver, CO is the grand
prize winner of our contest for those who
took part in our joint survey with Indiana
University. Pete won five nights of lodging
and four days of activities, either winter or
summer. We would like to thank everyone
who participated in the survey. The results
will help improve and develop future
programming.
Winter 06-07 is on its way, it's our 20th Anniversary, and we are
ready! Come fall the ASC crew gets a little itchy to get back on
the cold white stuff. The chatter around the program office is all about
snow, and if our wet summer is any indication we may be in for a BIG
snow year. We love winter and all the possibilities for adventure it offers.
Thanks to the efforts of our remarkable fundraising team and the
generosity of our many supporters we have new equipment for our
participants to come rip around on. Yeah - winter's fun and of course we
have many ways for all of our new and returning groups, families and
individuals to come up and enjoy wintertime in Crested Butte.
Page 5 lists our camps for the 06-07 season. Don't forget about the other
activities we offer around the valley and beyond. Feel free to contact us
anytime. We look forward to celebrating our 20th season with you!
DIRECTOR’S CORNER
Greetings from Beautiful Crested Butte,
We had a great summer this year with lots of old and new groups and
individuals joining us on many different adventures in the Crested
Butte area and beyond. We also had some new events we were
involved with including a collaborative effort with the Breckenridge
Outdoor Education Center where we helped with the downhill portion
of their bike event. The ASC also hosted the first annual World
Off-Road Handcycling Championships with competitors battling it
out in all sorts of weather on Mount Crested Butte.
As the leaves turn yellow here, we start putting away the summer
gear and begin looking forward to going into our twentieth anniversary
year! Twenty years ago our program was based out of a closet
at the ski area where we did about 40 lessons over the course of the
winter. Now, twenty years later, we are expecting to provide over
4,000 lessons this year to clients from around the world. While we
may be getting bigger, our heart is always on quality programming
that is fun and safe. We have always believed that the adventure
experiences that we offer not only get our clients out for some great
adventures, but also empower them to try new things with more selfconfidence
when they get home.
I truly hope that you can make it out to Crested Butte this upcoming
year and help us celebrate our twentieth anniversary in the best way
possible: get into the great outdoors with us and have fun!
Sincerely,
Christopher Hensley
DONOR PROFILE:
CHARLES WILLIAMS, LEGENDARY ADVENTURES
Charles Lawrence Williams was born March 2, 1942, and spent his childhood
in Bulawayo, Rhodesia. As a schoolboy, when not in school,
Charles could be found in the wilderness following his passion for hunting
and fishing. That love eventually carried over into his professional life and
after studying at the University of Capetown he went to work for the Rhodesia
National Parks and Wildlife Division for 13 years as a Game Warden. It was
there in Rhodesia that his first daughter, Sarah, was born in 1971.
In 1974 Charles immigrated to Botswana with his family to run the operations
of two of the premier safari companies, Safari South and Ker & Downey,
Botswana. In 1988 his company purchased two more safari companies in
Tanzania, Tanzania Game Tracker Safaris and Ker & Downey, Tanzania for
which he oversaw all operations. Ker and Downey, Nepal, a trekking venture
in Nepal, was also developed under his direction in 1988. Charles divided his
time between operations in Africa, Nepal, the Sales Offices and Headquarters
in Houston, Texas and his home in Perthshire, Scotland.
Charles Williams on safari.
Today Charles is President of Legendary Adventures, Inc., the parent company of the Tanzania and Nepal operations. Legendary
Adventures is a company by which all other safari companies are measured. It is not only known for its African adventures but
also as a leader in the area of conservation. As president, Charles overseas quality control and acts as government liaison. Charles
now lives in Boulder, Colorado with his wife Karen and in 2002, his second daughter Olivia arrived.
The relationship between Charles and the ASC started with Charles asking a very simple question; “What can I do to help”?
And help he most definitely has. With every year since 2002, Charles and Legendary Adventures have displayed their incredible
generosity for the Crested Butte Open by donating for auction either a magnificent hunting safari, a photographic safari or a
trekking trip to Nepal. The addition to being a major donor to our event, Charles and Legendary Adventures have “raised the
bar” to levels we only hoped for and it has created a wonderful sense of excitement for the entire event. To date, the value of
Charles and Legendary Adventure’s contribution exceeds over $130,000.
Thank you Charles, from the bottom of our hearts.
DISABLED VETS SCHEDULED FOR FEBRUARY TRIP
"A lot of wounded soldiers will never run fast again. They'll never feel that
wind on their face. On a snowboard, you get to have that feeling of being
completely alone and in control of a lot of speed." -Army Staff Sergeant Brian
Neuman, March 2006 after participating in a trip to Crested Butte with a group
of disabled soldiers from Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio.
The ASC is currently coordinating another trip with the Wounded Warriors
Project for disabled veterans that is scheduled for the week of February 9 - 15,
2007. We are hopeful to have up to five veterans, each accompanied by a
spouse or other family member. All veterans trips are sponsored by private
donations. Donating money specifically for disabled veterans is a meaningful
and concrete way to “support the troops” and show appreciation for enormous
sacrifice these soldiers and their families have made on our behalf.
Brian and his fiancé, Erika, were
married in May 2006, shortly after
their trip to CB in March.
PARTICIPANT PROFILE: SIX POINTS
The Six Points Association was formed in 1975 to address the
needs for vocational rehabilitation and to provide work
opportunities for the disabled in Gunnison and Hinsdale counties.
In addition to working with adults, Six-Points works cooperatively
with the local schools to prepare their students with disabilities
for their transition to the adult world.
Six Points has been joining the ASC for our winter skiing program
since 1987, when the ASC was created. Donny Schneider
and Danny Soderquist have skied for most of those seasons.
The regulars this past season included Donny, Danny, Ron
Ficklin, Ricky Galtiotis and Jeffrey Crawley. Everyone enjoys
powder days, especially Ricky, who is known as "The Powder
Pig." Danny is one of the bi-skiers, who enjoys spraying his
instructor with powder. Everyone who attends the Sunday ski
days heads home with a huge smile, regardless of the weather.
Six Points hosts an end of season pizza party to show their
appreciation for the attention and support the participants
receive. The ASC is looking forward to seeing all the Six Point
powder hound "regulars", and hopefully a few new
participants, this season.
"Powder Pig" Ricky and Jeffrey taking a break from skiing
with instructors Hollye and Sarabeth.
Six-points regulars Ron and Danny are accompanied by
ASC instructors Lisa and Rich.
Gunnison Valley Adventure Camper, Asher, masters the lasso at the
Green Mesa Ranch.
Golden aspen leaves and frost on the canoes this morning let me
know that the summer season over. What an exciting and busy
summer at the Adaptive Sports Center! Several of our favorite
groups returned this year, including the Serendipity Camp from
Houston, The Colorado Spina Bifida Association, The Roger Pepper
Camp from Florida and Texas, and the Dallas VA. Whether floating
on the Gunnison River or soaring down our zip line on the challenge
course, everyone had great adventures in the Rockies this summer.
We would like to send a special thanks to all of our visiting groups!
We are proud to announce growth in our community program over
the summer. We hosted old favorites such as Six Points,
Community Options, The Crested Butte Community School, The
Sage Mountain School and Stepping Stones Preschool. Local and
visiting youth of all abilities kept active fishing, boating and horseback
riding at the weekly Gunnison Valley Adventure Camp. In
addition, we partnered with new organizations such as the Women's Leadership Group, The Slate River School and Mt. Crested
Butte Recreation-Mountain Adventures. We look forward to working together again in the future.
Last, our successful summer could not have been possible without the dedication and hard work of our summer staff. We were
fortunate to host 5 interns this summer: Kaleigh Feagans, Robbie Flannery, Lottie Hays, Rico Ganssauge and Nick Affinati.
Our interns provided over 2,000 hours of service to the organization this summer. Our instructors, Lisa Schulte, Doug Abbott,
Valerie Martin, Tara Gorman, Cara Bosco, Ashlee Mickle and Caroline Collins proved to be an excellent team throughout the
summer and remained dedicated and focused as the program expanded. Program Manager JJ Hanratty held all aspects of the
program together and provided excellent support throughout the season.
HISTORIC OFF-ROAD HANDCYCLING RACE SPOTLIGHTS
ATHLETES WITH DISABILITIES
Tom Stillo
One-Off racers begin the grueling uphill climb. Racer, Seth Arseneau (#6) of Albuquerque, New Mexico
takes the lead at the start and holds his place throughout the Uphill Race.
Crested Butte, Colorado has long
been known as a Mecca for
Mountain Biking, even housing the
Mountain Bike Hall of Fame. It's no surprise
then that the town and neighboring
resort of Mount Crested Butte hosted the
first-ever Off-road Handcycling World
Championships, August 26-27. The event
featured athletes with disabilities [wheelchair
athletes] who competed on specially-designed
handcycles outfitted for offroad
riding.
Handcycling competition on the road is a
bona fide international phenomenon and
is one of the hottest sports in the
Paralympic Games, featured for the firsttime
in Athens, Greece in 2004. In the
"able-bodied" world however, off-road
handcycling is still catching-on, and the
race in Crested Butte was the first of its
kind. Sponsored by One-Off Handcycles - one of only two off-road handcycle manufacturers - the event featured three races in
two days and included a 3-mile hill climb, 5-mile cross-country race, and a trials exhibition. According to One-Off founder,
Mike Augspurger (also a founder of Merlin Metal Works), "this will be the first true off-road Handcycle race….in which every
competitor will tackle climbs, fire road, single track, and descents completely unassisted. Unlike the four-wheeled 'gravity
machines' introduced a few years ago, off road handcycles have a single-wheeled drive train in the back [similar to a twowheeled
mountain bike], with two wheels in the front for stability. " said Augspurger.
Competing in the event were mostly American riders, including Steve
Ackerman of Fort Collins, CO, who recently conquered the difficult White
Rim Trail in Utah - unassisted - on his One Off handcycle. Seth Arseneau of
Albuquerque, NM - who raced on the road at the Athens Paralympics -
declined an invitation to this year's road World Championships in Switzerland
to stay home and compete in this historic off-road event. Women's [road]
World Champion, Monica Bascio of Evergreen, CO was going to Switzerland
and stopped by Crested Butte on her way to the Olympic Training Center in
Colorado Springs. "There is no official women's division, but I'm going to
show-up just to let the men know that women aren't slow off-road either!" said
Bascio. Also competing was Paralympian Nick Catanzarite of Frasier, CO who
accompanied Bascio as part of the 2006 Winter Paralympic Team and competed
in Torino, Italy. Catanzarite competed in alpine skiing while Bascio competed
in Cross Country and Biathlon.
Prior to the event, Chris Hensley, Executive Director of the Adaptive Sports
Center of Crested Butte - the event host, and widely recognized as the nation's
leading program for off-road handcycling said, “ This event will set the bar for
the sport. The U.S. hosted the first-ever road handcycling World
Championship in 1998, and the sport is now huge. Therefore, it only makes
sense that we host the first-ever Off-road Championships in the U.S. as
well…it's a perfect fit for our program niche, right here in Crested Butte!"
IT’S THE ADAPATIVE SPORTS CENTER’S
20TH ANNIVERSARY!
In 1987, a group of local residents joined
President and Mrs. Carter to found a 501
(c)(3) non-profit organization, then known as
the Crested Butte Physically Challenged Ski
Program, to provide alpine ski lessons to people
with disabilities. The program's founders realized
that outdoor adventure recreation provides
a unique opportunity to make a difference in
people's lives by assisting them in expanding
their perceived limitations while participating
in an invigorating activity.
Over the years this organization has grown and been
renamed the Adaptive Sports Center (ASC) to reflect
its diversified winter activities and full range of summer
activities that have been added to meet clients' desires to
experience more sports and new challenges. We are
expecting to have over 500 individuals participate in more
than 4,000 activity days in our 20th Anniversary Year! With
all those years of experience our management, staff, interns
and volunteers are planning on the 2006 - 2007 season
being our biggest and best yet!
EL POMAR NOMINATION
The Adaptive Sports Center has been selected as a finalist for a 2006 El Pomar Award
for Excellence in the Sports and Recreation category. El Pomar's Awards for
Excellence is a unique program designed to recognize and reward excellent organizations
that are affecting positive changes in the state of Colorado. This program is unique
in that candidate organizations do not apply for the awards, but are nominated and selected
by a distinguished panel of Coloradoans known as the Awards for Excellence
Selection Commission.
El Pomar Foundation, based in Colorado Springs, is one of the largest and oldest private
foundations in the Rocky Mountain West, with assets totaling $500 million. El
Pomar contributes approximately $20 million annually through grants and Community
Stewardship Programs to support Colorado nonprofit organizations involved in health,
human services, education, arts and humanities and civic and community initiatives.
Each year the El Pomar Awards for Excellence select a winner and two finalists in
eleven categories that reflect specific areas of service in the nonprofit sector. The winner
in each category receives a $15,000 award; finalists each receive $7,500, and The
Julie and Spencer Penrose Award is a $25,000 award given to the overall outstanding
nonprofit organization.
With all information in hand, the Selection Commission evaluates the nominated
organization according to the following criteria:
-The organization's community impact
-Effective use of resources
-Commitment to mission
-Degree of success with program implementation
-Overall organizational excellence
The Awards for Excellence program provides more than just financial support; being
selected as a finalist or winner raises awareness of the organization throughout
Colorado.
Finalists and winners will be announced at an annual Awards Presentation Banquet in
November 2006.
