From the
Artistic Director
Our 2010/2011 Season was ambitious, featuring
five premieres of new works as well as two
new adaptations of classics. Collectively, these
productions provided stunning proof of the artistic
breadth and variety for which the Goodman is
noted, along with the quality and diversity that our
state-of-the-art facility has helped us achieve over
the past decade. I was particularly excited to
welcome back three of my favorite collaborators—
Manilow Resident Director Mary Zimmerman,
Artistic Associate Regina Taylor and MacArthur
“Genius” Grant–winning playwright Sarah Ruhl—
and pleased to welcome playwright Thomas
Bradshaw to the Goodman for the first time.
The Albert Theatre season opened with Mary
Zimmerman’s production of Candide, featuring
Leonard Bernstein’s award-winning musical score.
Mary’s unique artistry and an outstanding cast
made this funny, insightful and richly theatrical
work one of the major successes of the Chicago
theater season, which was repeated with the
production’s subsequent run at the Shakespeare
Theatre Company in Washington, DC. Following
Candide was our 33rd annual production of A
Christmas Carol, expertly directed for the fifth year
by William Brown.
In mid-January we presented Regina Taylor’s
newest work, The Trinity River Plays (co-produced
with Dallas Theater Center), an emotionally
riveting study of love, loss and remembrance that
won an Edgerton Foundation New American
Plays Award in 2010. Poetic and beautifully acted
by an ensemble headed by the amazing Karen
Aldridge, this was Regina’s most personal work to
date and further established her as one of our
premier playwrights.
Next up in the Albert was God of Carnage, a
theatrical rarity as a comedy that translates easily
to a variety of cultures and countries. Yasmina
Reza’s remarkable play is a searingly comic
dissection of what is perhaps the most daunting
activity on earth: parenting. The Goodman
production, one of the most popular in our
history, was brought to hilarious life by a skillful
quartet of performers under the adept direction
of Rick Snyder, on loan from his post
as an ensemble member at Steppenwolf
Theatre Company.
In April we staged the world premiere of the
Goodman-commissioned play Stage Kiss, Sarah
Ruhl’s homage to the theater, romantic relationships
and the often tenuous grasp that we all
have on our own identities. Written with her
trademark blend of humor, wisdom and humanity,
Stage Kiss reaffirmed Sarah’s position as one
of the singularly gifted voices of contemporary
American theater.
We ended the Albert season with the world
premiere of David Henry Hwang’s Chinglish,
directed by Leigh Silverman and produced in
association with The Public Theater. Few plays
in recent years have delighted our audiences
(and me) as much as this hilariously perceptive
look at the evolution of cultural identity on both
a national and a personal level, and few plays
are, I believe, as relevant to the world in which
we now live.
The Owen Theatre season opened with my spare,
intimate interpretation of Anton Chekhov’s The
Seagull, whose unforgettable characters reveal the
passion and pathos of life. This new adaptation
was brought to life by an ensemble of Chicago’s
finest actors. Next was the world premiere of Mary,
a Goodman-commissioned play by Prince Prize–
and Guggenheim Fellowship–winning playwright
Thomas Bradshaw in his Chicago debut. Inspired
by a true story, Mary uses outrageous social satire
to examine the pervasive nature of racism and
homophobia in contemporary America. Deftly
staged by May Adrales, the play inspired lively
audience discussion throughout its run. Closing
the Owen season was Tanya Saracho’s gripping
El Nogalar (produced in collaboration with Teatro
Vista), a play informed by Chekhov’s The Cherry
Orchard but grounded in the violence that currently
dominates the US/Mexico border.
The 2010/2011 Season also brought transitions
in our Artistic Collective, as Frank Galati departed
after a remarkable 24-year tenure, and playwright
Rebecca Gilman, a longtime Goodman
collaborator whose Goodman premieres include
Spinning into Butter, Boy Gets Girl and A True
History of the Johnstown Flood, joined the
group. This distinguished body of resident artists
also includes Associate Producer Steve Scott,
Resident Artistic Associate Henry Godinez,
Resident Director Chuck Smith, Manilow Resident
Director Mary Zimmerman and Artistic Associates
Brian Dennehy and Regina Taylor.
Much of the success of the Goodman depends
on the craftspeople and administrative staff who
work behind the scenes to create a home away
from home that allows resident and visiting artists
to flourish and turn out their best work. Many
thanks to my business partner, Roche Schulfer,
who supports the artistic vision of the theater
while working tirelessly with our governing boards,
and to our General Manager Peter Calibraro,
whose leadership and expertise secures its
financial future.
Our season of premieres was a satisfying way to
both celebrate our 10th anniversary on Dearborn
Street and explore — through myriad dramatic
styles and voices —the power of live theater to
entertain, provoke, reassure and enlighten. As
always, I thank you for your support and patronage,
and I look forward to seeing you next season.
From the
Executive Director
The 2010/2011 Season marked the Goodman’s
10th anniversary in our new home on Dearborn
Street. Our artists, boards and staff worked
exceedingly hard to make it our most exciting
season to date.
In the 2010/2011 Season, the Goodman:
◆ Produced five world premieres, four by
artists of color, and two new adaptations
of classic works;
◆ For the December 31, 2010 production of
A Christmas Carol, made every seat in the
house available to the USO, Children’s Memorial
Hospital, Ronald McDonald House Charities
and other charitable organizations, inviting
troops and their families as well as chronically
ill children to take part in one of Chicago’s most
cherished holiday events. Illinois Governor
Pat Quinn stopped by to greet the audience;
◆ Produced the world premiere of Chinglish and
celebrated its successful move to Broadway;
◆ Built on our 30+ year commitment to diversity
by hosting a series of community events
related to productions on our stages written
and/or directed by women and artists of color;
◆ Led a group of Chicago arts and educational
institutions to bring the Belarus Free Theatre
and their critically acclaimed production of
Being Harold Pinter to Chicago;
◆ Started GeNarrations, a new six-week
writing workshop for senior citizens drawing
on themes raised by the Goodman’s
mainstage productions;
◆ In November 2010, named former
Mayor Richard Daley and Mrs. Maggie Daley
Honorary Life Trustees at the re-dedication
of the Goodman Theatre Complex and
◆ Announced that nearly $10 million has
been raised toward the theater’s Endowing
Excellence Campaign.
These are only some of the highlights from an
exciting season. During Patricia Cox’s final year
as Chairman of the Board of Trustees, we
continued to advance our mission to make the
Goodman the premier cultural organization in
Chicago and to provide a nurturing environment
for artists and theater professionals. With
Patricia’s help, the Goodman’s 10th Anniversary
Celebration generated a groundswell of support
from longstanding donors and a record number of
new supporters. Her leadership was inspirational
and her focus admirable.
The season’s success is also due in large part
to the unending dedication and generosity of our
Board of Trustees and Women’s Board, as well as
the hard work and talent of the Goodman’s senior
staff: General Manager Peter Calibraro, Associate
Producer Steve Scott, Director of Development
Dorlisa Martin, Director of Education and
Community Engagement Willa Taylor, Director of
Marketing and Public Relations Lori Kleinerman,
Production Manager Scott Conn and Publicity
Director Denise Schneider. I also must thank
Bob Falls and all of our Artistic Associates for
their inspiring and visionary leadership.
We could not do what we do without the
tremendous support of our audiences, donors
and volunteers. Thank you. We hope you enjoyed
the season as much as we did and we look forward
to seeing you next year.
From the
Chairman
Because of you, our “Decade on Dearborn”
season was a smash!
As Chairman of Goodman Theatre, I am proud
to share our Annual Report from the 2010/2011
Season—our 10th year on Dearborn Street, and
85th season overall— including the wonderful
productions, artists and audiences who contributed
to its success. To mark the occasion, Artistic
Director Robert Falls and Executive Director
Roche Schulfer delivered a signature nine-play
line-up of a size and scope possible only at
the Goodman.
We launched the celebratory season in the
“best of all possible” ways, with a bold new
adaptation of Leonard Bernstein’s Candide from
Tony Award winner and Manilow Resident
Director Mary Zimmerman. Following its criticallyacclaimed
extended run at the Goodman,
Candide proceeded to delight audiences at
Washington, DC’s Shakespeare Theatre Company,
claiming numerous Jeff and Helen Hayes awards
for excellence. Our Season Opening Celebration
included a festive pre-show dinner at the Modern
Wing of the Art Institute—the original site of
Goodman Theatre—and a special tribute to
Founding Chairman Stanley Freehling and
Honorary President Lewis Manilow. Without
their contributions, the Goodman would not
be where it is today.
Robert Falls’ spellbinding interpretation of
The Seagull opened next, followed by our
33rd annual production of Charles Dickens’
A Christmas Carol—a cherished holiday tradition
whose magic has won the hearts of more than
1 million Chicagoans over three decades.
Five world-premiere productions in 2011
contributed to the impressive statistics we’ve
amassed over the past decade, including 16 world
premieres by artists of color, 20 premieres by
female writers and the completion of August
Wilson’s 20th Century Cycle. The new year
began with The Trinity River Plays, Regina Taylor’s
lyrical triptych, and Thomas Bradshaw’s provocative
Mary, followed by God of Carnage, a broad
popular success, hot on the heels of its Broadway
bow. Next, the Goodman was pleased to present
Tanya Saracho’s moving El Nogalar, followed
by Stage Kiss, the latest work from MacArthur
Fellowship winner Sarah Ruhl. In addition,
the world premiere of David Henry Hwang’s
Broadway-bound Chinglish drew new audiences
to the Goodman: more than one-third attended
for the first time.
To promote the Goodman during this exciting time
we formed the 10th Anniversary Civic Committee,
a diverse group of more than 65 corporate and
civic leaders representative of Chicago’s multicultural
landscape. Together they endorsed the
Anniversary and helped to raise the Goodman’s
visibility to an all-time high during the 2010/2011
Season. Our ticket sales and fundraising goals
also reflected this increased national interest,
reaching all-time highs in many areas.
With our inaugural August Wilson Awards, we
recognized those who have demonstrated an
exemplary commitment to advancing diversity at
the theater: Life Trustees Peter C.B. Bynoe and
María Bechily and Past Chairman Lester N.
Coney, as well as JPMorgan Chase and The Joyce
Foundation. We bestowed these awards at our
fall Diversity Breakfast—a moving event in which
we fondly remembered August Wilson as well as
Irv Markin, whom we lost too soon.
Aptly titled “One Enchanted Decade,” our May 21
black-tie Gala event featured Broadway superstar
and Glee heartthrob Matthew Morrison, who
brought the crowd to its feet with a memorable
program of song and dance. We paid tribute to all
of the Past Chairmen of Goodman Theatre’s Board
of Directors, as well as our Honorary Chairman,
Stephen Louis Grush and Mary Beth Fisher in The Seagull. Photo by Liz Lauren.

Albert Goodman. All proceeds from the Goodman
Gala, organized by the Woman’s Board, go to
supporting our Education and Community
Engagement programs, which are benchmarks for
arts education across the country. “One Enchanted
Decade” raised record-breaking amounts of
support for our Student Subscription Series and
General Theater Studies programs, as well as our
other education initiatives.
We have achieved so many milestones during
the past decade in addition to the productions that
light up our stages year after year. The Goodman
has provided 3,000 jobs, sold 2 million tickets,
paid $38 million to living artists and offered
4,500 performances over the past decade —
reinforcing our position as the anchor of downtown’s
Loop theater district. I would like to thank
The Goodman’s 2010/2011 Season included
three exciting events planned and hosted by
the Goodman Theatre Women’s Board, plus a
very successful Women’s Board Annual Fund
campaign led by Co-Chairs Linda Aylesworth
projects raised $1.75 million for the theater. A
portion of these funds was allocated to sponsor
the world premiere production of Chinglish.
On September 26 we launched the Goodman’s
10th anniversary on Dearborn Street with a
Season Opening Celebration featuring Candide,
directed by Manilow Resident Director Mary
Zimmerman. The festivities included cocktails and
dinner at the Modern Wing of the Art Institute,
a special tribute to Founding Chairman Stanley
The Goodman Theatre Vision
Goodman Theatre is Chicago’s most established and largest not-for-profit theater,
internationally renowned for the quality of its productions, the depth and diversity of its
artistic leadership, and for its many community and educational programs. g The vision of
the Goodman is to become the premier cultural organization in Chicago through productions
and community programs that make an essential contribution to the quality of life in
our society. g The Goodman has identified three institutional values that form the basis
for the vision and objectives of Goodman Theatre, and serve as guiding pillars for our
productions and programming. These values are:
Quality
Goodman Theatre believes that live theater
illuminates the past, informs the present and
imagines the future. We seek to provide our
audiences with the definitive theater experience.
We strive to give our artists the resources that
enable them to do the best possible work with
the highest standards of excellence.
Diversity
Goodman Theatre believes that respect for
diversity is a cornerstone of our community
and our society. Our work features a variety
of aesthetics, cultures and modes of theatrical
expression. We are committed to promoting
creativity, collaboration, artistic risk-taking,
freedom of expression and cultural diversity.
Community
Goodman Theatre believes that live theater
plays a unique role in the educational, social
and economic development of a community.
For example, theater develops cognitive skills,
emotional growth and moral awareness, particularly
in young people. Since the Goodman is a
part of the community, we believe that we have a
responsibility to improve the quality of life through
our productions and educational programs.
Tony and MacArthur “Genius” Award–winning
director Mary Zimmerman’s breathtaking new
production of Candide was the theatrical event
of the season. In addition to the music of
Leonard Bernstein, Candide featured contributions
from some of the greatest lyricists of the
twentieth century. In this racy musical satire,
naive Candide is banished for romancing the
Baron’s daughter, only to be plagued by a
series of absurd hardships that challenge his
optimistic outlook on life and love.

A timeless holiday tradition, the Goodman’s
production of A Christmas Carol celebrates the
yuletide season by infusing Charles Dickens’
classic tale with a little bit of magic, as only the
Goodman can. From amazing flying ghosts to a
quiet little boy and his crutch, A Christmas Carol
is filled with enough singing, dancing and enchantment
to rejuvenate even the most disheartened
of souls. Audiences delighted as the cast helped
transform the miserly Ebenezer Scrooge through
the course of one very memorable Christmas Eve.
In The Trinity River Plays (Jarfly, Rain and
Ghoststory), Regina Taylor explores the unique
passages in one woman’s life journey. In Jarfly, Iris
is determined to go to college and become a writer,
while her rebellious cousin Jasmine has dropped
out of high school to follow a path of self-destruction.
The cousins come to a crossroads when
Jasmine draws Iris into the terrible secret she has
been hiding since childhood. Rain was first seen as
part of the Goodman’s 2009 New Stages Series.
In the play, fiercely independent Iris has made a
successful life for herself as a journalist in New
York City — but when her marriage fails, she begins
to unravel. In search of solace, Iris returns to her
mother’s house in Texas, but her homecoming
proves more confounding than consoling when her
mother makes a shocking announcement. As
long-buried family secrets come to light, Iris must
face her past and make some difficult decisions
about the future. In Ghoststory, Iris is surprised
by a visit from her estranged husband, Frank,
desperate for a reconciliation. But before this
reconnection can be explored, she must confront
and embrace the specters of her past that continue
to haunt her present.
In an unprecedented artistic event, Goodman
Theatre invited Eastern Europe’s Belarus Free
Theatre to Chicago for a limited engagement of
Being Harold Pinter. Presented in partnership
with Northwestern University, the League of
Chicago Theatres and Chicago Shakespeare
Theater, Being Harold Pinter arrived in Chicago
on the heels of its sold-out engagement at
New York’s Under the Radar Festival— in which
the Belarus Free Theatre participated after its
members narrowly escaped imprisonment in
their homeland in December 2010.
Hailed as “truly passionate, truly political theater
[that] isn’t just admirable, it has virtues beyond
its relevance and bravery” (The New York Times),
Being Harold Pinter incorporates transcripts from
Belarusian political prisoners with excerpts from
Nobel Prize–winning playwright Harold Pinter’s
lifetime of writings. Belarus Free Theatre created
visually striking images with simple means and
underscores the fierceness of Pinter’s words with
the intense physicality of the actors. Being Harold
Pinter blurred the boundaries between art and
reality, delivering a poignant contemporary
commentary on violence, oppression, freedom
and human dignity.
Re-Dedication Ceremony
Monday, November 22, 2010
Goodman Theatre
The Goodman held a ceremony with Mayor and
Mrs. Richard M. Daley commemorating the
theater’s “Decade on Dearborn.” The event began
with a reading of the speech that August Wilson
gave at the building’s inauguration in 2001 by a
corps of Chicago actors including (Center picture,
left to right) Regina Taylor, Steve Pickering,
Ernest Perry, Jr., Henry Godinez, Mary Beth
Fisher and Brian Dennehy. Goodman leadership
then paid tribute to the visionaries who made the
new theater a reality and specifically recognized
the contributions of Richard and Maggie Daley by
making them Honorary Trustees of the theater
and dedicating a pair of theater seats in their
names. Photo by Eric Y. Exit.
A Heartfelt Tribute
Richard M. and Maggie Daley
Richard M. Daley, the longest serving mayor of Chicago, had a boundless enthusiasm
for the arts which led to incredible feats including the revitalization of the North Loop
Theatre District, the creation of Millennium Park and the building of Goodman Theatre’s
new home on Dearborn Street. Mayor Daley helped to arrange the donation of the
Selwyn and Harris theaters, played a key role in securing funding for the new Goodman
Theatre and participated in several high-profile events during our capital campaign.
At a re-dedication ceremony, which celebrated the Goodman’s first decade on Dearborn,
the theater honored Mayor and Mrs. Daley for their substantial contributions to our
organization. During the ceremony, the Daleys were named Honorary Life Trustees of
Goodman Theatre and two seats in the Albert Theatre were dedicated to them, now
commemorated with plaques bearing their names.
and Sondra Healy with Maggie and Richard Daley.
In Memoriam
“[the theater] is a mirror…in a way, we get to face our
personal triumphs and our calamities, our celebrations
and our remembrances. the theater is a remarkable place
and we’re all very fortunate to have it in our life here in
this wonderful space.”
Maggie Daley at the November 2010
Re-dedication of the new Goodman Theatre
g
All of us at the Goodman
mourn the loss of Maggie
Daley, whose love of
education and the arts
helped transform Chicago
into a vibrant place to live
and work.
The first civic organization that Mrs. Daley became
involved with was the city’s Cultural Center, the
old central library that she helped remake into a
centerpiece for culture in Chicago. In 1991 she
founded Gallery 37, a program to promote arts
training and jobs for Chicago youth. This initiative
evolved into After School Matters, a not-for-profit
program to provide teens with educational and
career-oriented activities in such areas as sports
and technology. Mrs. Daley also helped put a
positive face on metastatic breast cancer, which
can often be an isolating experience, by living with
it publicly for nine years.
Her dignity and passion inspired countless people
who continue to champion her favorite charities.
She will be remembered for her graciousness, her
concern for children’s welfare and education, and
her love for our city throughout her 22 years as
the first lady of Chicago. She will be missed.

In Memoriam
During the 2010/2011 Season, the Goodman lost dear friends from among its major boards
and their families. They are missed by all.
Deborah Beitler
Deborah Beitler was a warm and energetic
member of the Goodman Theatre Women’s
Board, where she held a variety of leadership
roles. After joining in 2003, Debbie took on
an array of responsibilities including serving as
co-chair of the Season Opening Benefit featuring
Purlie, co-chairing the Menu Committee for
the Goodman’s annual Gala and playing an
instrumental role in reviving and adapting the
Women’s Board bylaws. No matter the project,
Debbie performed each task with enthusiasm.
In addition to her involvement on the Women’s
Board, Debbie and her husband, Stephen, were
longtime Subscribers and Premiere Society
Donors, providing generous support for Goodman
Education and Community Engagement programs
and productions throughout the years.
Debbie was also very active on the Women’s
Boards of other Chicago institutions including
the Joffrey Ballet and Ravinia Festival. She was
a great leader in the Chicagoland philanthropic
community and will be missed.
Joan M. Freehling
Joan was a civic leader and patron of the arts
who shared her husband’s commitment to civic
and philanthropic causes. With her husband,
Stanley Freehling, the Founding Chairman of the
Goodman, she launched the Goodman’s journey
to becoming a cherished Chicago institution.
Joan served on the Goodman Theatre Women’s
Board for 33 years. She was a member of the
Women’s Board Executive Committee, a Planning
Chair for the inaugural festivities of the capital
campaign for the new Goodman, co-chaired
The Gospel at Colonus Gala and worked on
numerous other projects including the Women’s
Board annual appeal campaign, fashion show,
banner and Gala ad book. She brought thorough
and detailed planning to each of her tasks and
had the ability to inspire her colleagues.
Joan also served on boards of the Art Institute
of Chicago, University of Chicago, Northwestern
University, the Cradle and the Rehabilitation
Institute, and was a Life Trustee of Ravinia
Festival. She was a graduate of New Trier
Township High School and attended Scripps
College in Claremont, California.
William W. McKittrick
Beloved husband of Life Trustee and Women’s
Board member Carolyn McKittrick and great
friend to the Goodman, Bill had a distinguished
career in law and was a life long patron of the
arts and learning. He served on active duty during
World War II and was a founding partner of the
firm Vedder, Price, Kaufman & Kammholz. He
was a member of the undefeated 1933 football
team at DePauw University, where he received an
undergraduate degree. He received his JD from
Northwestern University School of Law.
Bill gave substantially of both his time and
resources to numerous civic organizations,
including the Art Institute of Chicago (for which
he also served on numerous service committees),
the Lyric Opera of Chicago, the Chicago
Symphony Orchestra (Life Trustee), the Newberry
Library (Life Trustee), Northwestern University
and the Caxton Club (former President).
Throughout his 68-year marriage to Carolyn,
Bill was incredibly supportive of her endeavors
and passions, including the Goodman.
