For Youth Development
For Healthy Living
For Social Responsibility

dear YMCA family and friends:
It always amazes me that even after 156 years the Y finds new ways to remain a
relevant leader in our communities. Over the past year, we saw tremendous advances
in the delivery of programs, how we relay our mission, the variety of people we serve
and the new partnerships we forged throughout the region.
If I were to highlight everything that makes us proud at our Y, we would fill three
reports! However, a few accomplishments stand out.
The Board of Management of the East Suburban YMCA stepped forward with an
incredible commitment to build a new facility. Within months, the group secured nearly
half of the finances needed to provide a state-of-the-art facility to better serve their
community. In the Hill District, people from all communities joined us to break ground
for the long-awaited Thelma Lovette Family YMCA. Mrs. Lovette’s smile from the front
row made the wait worthwhile. And downtown, our beautiful PNC YMCA was both a
demonstration of our world-class service and also of the corporate relationships that
strengthen our work every day.
The fiscal year ended amid the excitement of new branding for the YMCA. Although
there is great enthusiasm about our new “look,” the real excitement is the work that
happens inside and outside of our iconic “Y.” Framing the work around these three
pillars — For Youth Development, For Healthy Living, and For Social Responsibility —
will tell the story for us. This is why we are here. This is what we’ve always done,
but we look forward to making a positive impact on even more people through these
areas of focus.
I hope that you will join me in celebrating our accomplishments and our new energy.
I invite you to visit a new branch. Volunteer. Make a donation or become a member.
Our Y is committed to do everything we
can to nurture the potential in children and
teens. By providing resources that support
school readiness, after-school care, math and
language literacy, and through mentoring young
people, we accomplish these goals. Some of these
quality programs also include service learning
and civic engagement; all of these programs are
designed to develop the youth of today into
the leaders of tomorrow.
To give back to the Baierl Y for their
experience, they raised and donated $1,600 to
that branches’ annual campaign for financial
assistance. Graduates of the first year of the
program reported that being able to relay
their service learning experiences on college
applications was a tremendous help. Additionally,
participant Brynn Smith, now a freshman in
college, was appointed to the Baierl Y Board of
Management as the first teen board member.
Teen Leaders Club
A major focus for youth development at the Y is
service learning. Engaging teens in meaningful
afterschool activities starts the lifelong practice
of volunteerism and develops leadership skills.
why we are here:
“Kids grow up here and often
continue with us as staff. We have
a 24-year-old working in youth
programming. He joined our Y as
a three-year old summer camp kid.
the Y isn’t something you use,
it’s a part of who you are.”
At the Baierl Family Y, students from the North
Allegheny school district launched a local chapter
of Teen Leaders, a national Y program. Teen
Leaders provides a forum for youth to conceive
ideas for bettering their communities and
stimulates discovery of need in the world outside
of their comfort zone.
Meeting weekly throughout the year, they
were intimately engaged in the program. Among
many projects, they served Thanksgiving dinner
to residents of our Allegheny Y, “adopted” a family
in Hazelwood that included birthday parties,
Christmas gifts, food and support, raised money
for a local women’s shelter and in their own
community, launched a “Prom Dress Drive” for
girls who could not afford a dress.
Starfish Literacy and
Seahorse Math Program
A critical component of our Y’s strategic planning
goals includes literacy as a priority. Strong reading
and math skills provide advantages in life.
Research shows that people with higher education
and literacy levels are more likely to have greater
annual earnings and low unemployment rates.
The Starfish reading literacy program is
designed to improve the reading skills of third
graders who have been identified by their teachers
as needing assistance to achieve grade-level
proficiency. Seahorse, our program for literacy in
mathematics also saw great success. Through
referrals from the public schools, we operated both
programs at the Penn Hills Y; the Hazelwood Y; the
North Boros Y; the Centre Avenue Y; Homewood
Y and the Collegiate Y. Because the Y receives
EITC funding to support these literacy programs,
we were able to offer them free of cost.
The Starfish curriculum is multi-faceted and
incorporates group-reading activities, computer
based learning, individual reading activities
and recreational activities. Children enjoy journal
writing, music, poetry, drama and literacy games.
Through these engaging methods, Starfish
measured an improvement rate of 83% using the
DIEBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy
Skills). In the Seahorse program, modeled after
Pennsylvania Mathematics Standards, more than
half of the students increased their written exam
scores by 10%. To learn about math patterns, the
teacher talked about quilting and each student
made a piece of a larger quilt. When learning about
money, the students participated in a classroom
store, taking turns being clerks, customers and
even advertisers.

Healthy Living
Though the world may be unpredictable, one
thing remains certain — our Y is and always
will be dedicated to building healthy,
confident, connected and secure communities.
Anyone who desires to improve their physical and
spiritual fitness and to lead a better life can find
help at the Y.
Obesity
Everyone knows that making healthy food choices
is a critical element of obesity prevention. Through
a generous grant from Youth Philanthropy Project
of The Heinz Endowments, the Hazelwood Y
planted a garden to help teach children and adults
the value of including fresh vegetables and fruits
in their daily meals.
This year, our Y became more engaged in
addressing the epidemic of childhood obesity.
We include age-appropriate physical activity in all
youth programs from our after-school care to our
day camps, youth sports, and overnight camps.
Promoting a physically active lifestyle for children
increases the likelihood that they will learn to
move skillfully and develop an enjoyment of
movement and motor skill confidence. It also
helps to ensure healthy development and later
participation in physical activity.
At our Penn Hills and Western Area Y’s we
offered “Kid Shape,” a nine-week program for
children ages 9 to 13 who are overweight.
University of Pittsburgh graduate students in
exercise physiology, nutrition and pediatric
exercise, guided children through understanding
and addressing obesity. A key step for families to
combat obesity is helping parents accept the fact
that their kids need help. Because the children in
our program were referred by their pediatricians
and school nurses, parents were more at ease and
engaged. Social workers helped all members of the
household address the issues surrounding obesity
and a physical fitness expert provided appropriate
exercises. Additionally, dieticians worked with
the families to share valuable information about
food choices and portions. The program is free
and offered through Highmark.
Family Strengthening
As the needs of families become more complex,
our Y is assuming a greater role in building
stronger families and communities. We are more
than just activity centers; we focus on concrete
ways to strengthen families. Our Y has a long
history of family involvement. From its very
beginning more than 156 years ago, we have
demonstrated sensitivity to the needs and
concerns of families.
Parent-child programs are strong at our Y.
Our Indian Princess program remains one of the
most active in the country. Girls aged 7 to 10
and their fathers spend special time together
at branches and camps. The Y understands that
busy working fathers need an official “play
date” too.
why we are here:
“When children plant gardens,
they are engaged in physical activity
that produces food for daily
nutrition. The Y’s focus on this
is a benefit to our community
and generations to come.
As balancing work and home life has become
increasingly difficult, the Y responded by adding
more child care options and creating specific
programs like family swims and family nights.
These activities provide families much-needed
opportunities to come together to play, interact,
and have fun. Additionally, programs focused
on the tenuous “tween” (10 –14) population, a
group that was often left without much to do as
younger or older siblings engaged in ageappropriate
activities.

Our Y focuses on increasing the impact we
have on our community through our unique
capacity to foster lasting personal and
social change. We view participation in our
programs and services as a means to a greater
end. This year we motivated more people than ever
to help us through volunteerism, donations and
advocacy in support of their neighbors and
communities.
Workforce Development
At the Homewood Y, we work to put people back
to work. We know that the key to a community’s
quality of life is the economy and gainful employment.
The Y’s Career & Workforce Development
Center East is a Neighborhood Employment Center
(NEC). The mission is to assist unemployed and
underemployed residents in obtaining the skills
why we are here:
“The leadership at the Y and their
ability to execute what they
say they are going to do make the
decision to provide corporate
support much easier …”
and qualifications to gain employment. On a
monthly basis, we served approximately 50 to
70 first time applicants and assisted 400 plus
return consumers.
We worked with consumers to assist in
resume development, basic computer applications,
housing and treatment referrals and transportation
assistance as well as weekly group support
meetings. We made an average of ten placements
a month where consumers secured full or part time
positions at an hourly rate of $9.00 or more.
Special populations such as ex-offenders,
those recovering from addiction and homelessness
were connected to the extensive social services
needed to build better lives. In addition, we worked
with the Workforce Development Professionals
Network to provide accredited courses in various
disciplines further opening opportunities.
Volunteers
Our Y is a volunteer-driven organization. This year,
men and women from all sectors made connections
that directly supported our most underserved
populations. We know that Pittsburghers are
generous with both time and money. When taken
on a Y “Mission Tour,” they see first-hand the
critical needs in our neighborhoods. We conducted
24 tours this year, through which 100 new
volunteers joined our ranks.
We are not exaggerating when we state that
you have to “see it to believe it.” For example,
right after a mission tour, a team of young lawyers
from Jones Day asked how they could get involved.
Within weeks, these professional women hatched
the idea of building a library for children in our
Hazelwood branch. They embarked on collecting
enough books to stock a library and brought
additional books to provide each child in summer
camp with one to take home. To top off their
generosity, they spent quality time with the
children, reading aloud to them.
Other volunteers devoted many hours of
physical work to help clean or build in and around
our branches. Through our Collegiate Y, volunteers
worked on planting sustainable gardens to
support our food programs and to teach children
about how important caring for our earth is to
their future.

community impact
W
e know that when we work as one, we
move people and communities forward.
That’s why we are committed to
providing support to our neighbors and
opportunities for kids, adults and families to give,
join in or advocate in the name of stronger
communities. To bring about meaningful change,
individuals need ongoing encouragement and
tools. We’re here day-in and day-out to provide
the resources to address the most pressing
social issues: child welfare, education, employment,
housing and substance abuse. We work to make
sure every child, family and community has what
they need to achieve their best.
All kids have great potential. At the Y, we
help them set and achieve their personal and
educational goals. They gain confidence as they
recognize the Y as a place where they belong
and can feel comfortable exploring new interests
and passions. Through leadership and academic
enrichment programs such as mentoring, youth
government and college preparation, we make sure
that every child has an opportunity to envision a
positive future, and to take an active role in
strengthening the community.
We are a powerful ally and advocate for our
communities. Our experience and strong relationships
in 10,000 neighborhoods across the nation
mean that we are able to organize grassroots
efforts and influence public policy around a range
of social issues including child welfare, education
and public health.
Serving families has always been at the
heart of the Y. We are a place where they can find
respite from social, economic and educational
challenges, and learn how to overcome them. We
have a fundamental desire to provide opportunities
for every family to build stronger bonds, achieve
greater work/life balance, and become more
engaged with their communities.
This year, the Y unveiled
a simple, more focused
message. Work we’ve
always done, but to share
our community impact,
we now are: For Youth
Development, For Healthy
Living and For Social
Responsibility.
why we are here:
“I grew up in the Hill District and
I love this town. I feel it is my duty
to steer us toward being a thriving
neighborhood again. When I see
organizations like the Y partnering
with local people, I am so hopeful.”

YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh
Eric K. Mann, President and CEO
420 Fort Duquesne Boulevard, Suite 625
Pittsburgh, PA 15222
Dear Mr. Mann:
I wanted to send you a letter to describe my experience with the YMCA for the very first
time this year. I had always enrolled my children in other local summer camps. But the
last two years, my children have had a less than good time over the summer and I was
desperate to find a quality program that didn’t break the bank for other expenses during
the summer.
My parents for the last two years had been volunteering at the food bank at the Hazelwood
Y as a way to give back to the community. They always seemed to enjoy the company
of people who worked there and were told of their summer camp program. I wasn’t sure
I wanted my daughters to go to the Hazelwood program because mainly I knew nothing
about it and wasn’t sure the Y was the place for my kids. Plus I was worried about the cost
for such care.
But, after talking with Ms. Lisa Donofrio, I decided to at least give it a chance. Mr. Mann,
I have to tell you that my daughters have had the best summer ever at a summer camp
program. My kids have been busy every single day, they go swimming, they have dance
class, they have karate and have been outside exercising and going on field trips, just to
name a few activities.
At their other camp, they did none of these things. My kids are already talking about going
back next summer. I would especially like to thank the staff involved with my daughters’
care over the summer. Each and every one of them should be commended for the time and
effort that they give to the program,. Greenfield/Hazelwood residents are very fortunate to
have such a program in our area.
My daughters have not only enjoyed the activities that were presented to them, but each of
these caregivers have taken their time and various talents and shared them with the kids,
who in many cases, don’t have anyone at home giving them this much attention. My kids
literally crash when they get home from camp, whereas the other camp did nothing but
house them all day. Not with the Y – these kids are out and about, being active, getting to
see and do things I would not be able as a working parent to provide them all summer long.
So to your organization, I say thank you. We have never been more happy to see our
daughters so happy. And I especially want to thank all those hard workers at the Hazelwood
YMCA. They are the true reason I am writing this letter and they are all wonderful
people and great staff. Thank you and God bless.
